DIY Stirplate - Powerful and Cheap
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- In this video I show you how I made my own stirplate. This is more powerful than some more expensive commercial ones out there! You can see me using it in my Tabasco sauce video ( • Tabasco Style Hot Sauc... ).
The parts for this shouldn't cost you much. What you need:
- a box. I used one that I bought on Amazon (amzn.to/2mQoqh2), but you can use an old cigar box, or anything else you have lying around.
- PC fan, you should have one lying around, or in an old broken PC. If you don't, then you can buy one for £5 (geni.us/arcticfan)
- Rare earth/Neodynium magnets (geni.us/neomag)
- You need a way to control the speed of the fan. In the video I am using a potentiometer (goo.gl/D9zHkr). I actually switched this out for a PWM 12v motor control system, which is much more controllable and doesn't heat up like a potentiometer. So I would suggest this: geni.us/pwmcont....
- 12v DC power source (geni.us/dcadapter)
- not essential, but handy to make a neat system, these are the dc plugs I use: amzn.to/2Dnat13

Great project! Word to the wise: I just fried a similar fan rated for 6VDC by running 12VDC to it. Lasted about 3 seconds. Mind your voltage!
I'm almost finished building mine based on your design. Just waiting for a stir bar to arrive then I can test it.
This is just fantastic! What a fun project. I'll be making one soon - hoping for peppers in 3 or 4 months.
I would have added sand to the box to help deaden the vibration excellent video!
That is such a cool concept for mixing hot sauce! Thank you
Perfect tutorial.
I was messing around with my potmeter but your video shows me that mine is wrongly wired making it way too sensitive. Also having the problem with stir bar jumping off. Going to try your tips this weekend, thank you!
Good luck! Hope it turns out well
@@ChilliChump thanks, I have just about the same components as you have so I trust it will. Cheers!
Worked like a charm and my starter has been stirring the whole night ready for brew day this afternoon. Thanks again!
I tried clicking on the magnets you have in the description, but it just takes me to a search for magnets in amazon. So I’m wondering which ones you used. Keep up the awesome work.
The reason the big bar does not work well is that the poll's of the magnets on the PC fan are too close compared to the poll's on the stir bar. Simple solution, mount the fan magnets on a piece of ice-cream stick further apart and then onto the fan. Obviously just cut the stick shorter. Also break the fan blades off, less air resistance
I have two (3?) questions about your stir plate and the Buffalo Sauce:
1) How many magnets did you end up putting on the fan (two or three per side), and what US size did you use (1/4" or 3/8)?
2) You added some additional vinegar to your Buffalo Sauce. Was that to lower the viscosity or just for taste?
TIA - Mark
@ChilliChump.... Outstanding!
Why is it so hard to find a reversible or counter clockwise magnetic stirred?
Would larger magnet help with the longer stir bar?
Nice, I got to give this a try sometime this year, any update on your peppers for this season.
+Eber Teran I'm going to put out an update for my peppers/garden this weekend. Not a lot going on at the moment unfortunately with the cold British weather. Although soon it will be time to prep for planting the seeds for the season!
Any pics of the upgraded controls and box interior?
Great stuff! I dont know how to Wire the pmw...what about the pentiometr how much Ohm do u recommend? Im clueless
Looks like you have enough extra parts. Maybe make these and sell them? Looks great!
Capt Fantastikk I would buy one, because I was with him until he pulled out the wires.
@@theconfidentnovice5789 it's fairly easy. I watched a few different ones of these. Keep watching more. You'll get it eventually. Probably make it different. Mine is made of a combination of a few different videos I watched. Still waiting on parts from China. Seeds sprouted. 3 weeks old now. I have time lol
The stir bar should always be smaller than the space between the magnets to prevent the bar running away. Still a great video.
Hi there.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us.
At what speed must you set the stir plate?
Thank you.
Hi there. You want it at the highest speed you can get it without the stir bar being thrown.
Thank you for the great video. I would love to try this myself for your recipes, as well as for making beer yeast starters. I'm just wondering if the unit you created can support a 5 litre Erlenmeyer Flask?
I use a 5l flask with it. You may have some challenges if the liquid you are storing is too thick
@@ChilliChump the liquid would be essentially a light beer wort mixture to cultivate yeast
Then it should be just fine! I managed to stir up quite a viscous chilli sauce with this in the 5l flask.
Thanks for all your videos and insight. I couldn't see what size magnets you are using? And that fan is no longer available can you advise another type/model?Not sure what is meant by push/pull.
Hi Seb, the fan is the Arctic F9 (the link is still working for me... try this: amzn.to/367goXy)
The magnets I used were 2mm thick.
@@ChilliChump Thank you very much for your quick response. I have just started with my seedlings so I am just planning for a year from now. By then will have my first batch with your stirrer plate and therminator.
Great video! What are your thoughts on stirring mash ferments with a stir plate during the ferment. I was hoping that this would prevent kahm yeast from growing.
That would work...however you may have challenged with stirring because it would be a lot more viscous at that point
My sauce is separating still after using the stir plate. I am guessing I will have to use the xanthan gum to keep it together.???
How long did you stir for?
@@ChilliChump we have done several receipes and always stir 4 to 8 days.
@@peggyorlowsky9463 how long before you see seperation? With mine I get about 6 months before anything noticeable...sometimes even longer. Seperation will eventually happen though. It will be quicker to seperate depending on the ingredients you are using. For example if you are putting oil in your sauce.
By the way, there is nothing wrong with using xantham gum ...I just like to find other ways to do things too
Love your videos just one question / favor can you link the stir bar you recommend for this set up thank you
Thank you! The link for the one I use changes quite a bit! But if you click on this, it should give you what you are looking for (stir bars that will be resistant to corrosion etc from acids). geni.us/stirbar
In one of the comments - a guy advises using a larger & longer stir bar ...... anybody know what size is best (using 2L flask)
Would you do this again? I'm curious if you would just use xanthan gum instead. I'm also curious if you would just buy a magnetic stir plate instead and if so which one? Thanks
I have done this sauce a few times now. I did buy a magnetic stirrer to compare. My home built one outperforms it (I bought a fairly expensive one.). And no, xantham gum will thicken and emulsify. But the stirring also brings out the flavours into the vinegar. You get a much better taste at the end.
In the video where you used the stir plate you showed a pwm controller. I didn't see you put that in in this video. Is it necessary or does the stir plate work fine wirh just the potentiometer. Thanks.
I saw, after reading more, that you added the pwm controller due to the pot getting too warm. Thanks.
I'm planning to start this project as I want to try your quick (excluding 4 days) Sriracha sauce.
What length of magnetic stir bar are you using?
Ah, never mind. I should've watched the video till the end. Looks like the 15mm works best. 👍
Making progress on the stir plate but run into a problem: the potentiometer only activates the fan when it reaches about 95%. Not sure why. I went with the potentiometer due to cost.
Which pentiometer did you get? It sounds like the resistance rating is too high
@@ChilliChump thanks for the stir plate idea. I have gotten mine going with the fans I mentioned with the low medium high settings. Have not gotten the other one going yet...a electrician I spoke to suggested an 100 ohm 5 watt pot so will try that and let you know.
Can you make a kit like make your stir plate an the stir bar an flask an sell them I’d buy it
Hi Chantell, I was planning on doing this next year actually!
Nice vid. Greetings.
HI, I'm thinking of making this for yeast starters for homebrewing. What do you use it for?
It works well for yeast starters. But I use it for emulsifying my hot sauces: ua-cam.com/video/G_woRAK_aPg/v-deo.html
@@ChilliChump Cheers, that looks good
Alas I am afraid I must report that I think I burnt out my fan. Unbeknown to me when this fan arrived (and I bought two! lol) their wiring is all the same colour. All black. When I connected them to my 12v to test out all I saw was smoke :( I will buy some much cheaper fans tomorrow and try again...how do you know which is positive and negative if the wiring is all the same?
Didn't the fan come with a wiring diagram?
@@ChilliChump sorry let me explain. I did not buy the fans from your link as I thought I could buy any PC fan. And no there were no diagrams. But I will chalk this down to learning. I am going to go with a different alternative. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JLV4BWC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 will void the need for potentiometer
Seb, I wouldn't recommend that one. You have less control when starting up the stirring. If the "L" setting is too fast, then you will have a problem getting it going.
@@ChilliChumpOk thank you once again.
What is the stir-bar made of? is it also a magnet or iron core.
Teflon coating, with a magnet inside
@@ChilliChump Thanks for the speedy reply and for the fermentation videos. Made some, but I only have green chillies in the garden, so the sauce turned out a light brown, I think from the vinegar, but tastes gorgeous!
What is knob that controls speed called?
A rheostat or potentiometer. I link to an option in the description of the video.
wow can make tornados
It's really a shame you did not include stirring the large demijohn bottle.
It's interesting, you are the third person showing a similar setup. All of them say at the end that they tried it with a big bottle but nobody had shown it!!!
I think that tiny motor you have can't possibly stir demijohn bottle.
It suits the larger flask just fine. I show it in another video
@@ChilliChump I can't find it!
Admittedly the jar wasn't full in this one ua-cam.com/video/8t03BZJlN5M/v-deo.html
Will have to show a full jar next batch I do
Step your stir plate game up
Can u make and sell this diy? I'll buy it !
I have already sold a couple of them. Where are you based?
@@ChilliChump philippines how much?
Searching to make a magnetic stirrer for chemistry I ended up here
Problem with the larger stirr-bar are:
1) it's too large for the bottom of the bottle you put it in.
2) you glued the small magnets on the fan too close to one another.
Problem with using a fan motor for this are
1) Fans are not designed to be (externally) speed controlled. You probably have found that with the potentiometer as well as with the pwm controller.
2) Computer fans are not designed to be loaded. Not only are you adding magnets that add to the weight, you also ask from the fan to transfer quite a bit of energy into your liquid. All that has to be delivered by your fragile fan motor. And you let it run for weeks.
May I suggest you spend a little more and get the type of motor that model airplanes use.
They are designed to run smoothly even with a load (they drive props)
They are designed to be speed controlled over a wide range of speeds. (They may require a motor driver. There are very many different types out there)
Google is your best friend.
Actually computer fans are designed to be controlled either externally or by software the fan doesn't know the difference. The extra load on the fan really isn't a big deal either considering these fan can run continuously for years before failure and they're dirt cheap.
