Bro that’s exactly the response, they want you to feel that pain of emotions. One of the lyrically best bands ever, so intelligent
David was studying to be a Rabbi and owned a healthcare facility before starting Disturbed. He is definitely a smart man and has designed every bit of this song and video to make you feel it.
This video is an accurate reaction to the grief, confusion and rage that accompanies a loss like this. David Dramon's also unfortunately lost several other friends to suicide and this led to the group's later song Reason to Fight... strongly recommend it to get the whole picture of how Disturbed has come full circle for dealing with this kind of tragedy.

In an interview, David said this song was brought on by one of his ex who took her life, because he left her. And his battle there after, whit " The Devil " if you will... struggle with thoughts of taking his own life.
I stopped my mom from jumping off the Coronado Bridge in San Diego in the mid 80's. This song has always struck a chord with me. I love disturbed.
Can I say a couple things? First you're right about he would have to end his life to be with her in hell. The person he's referring to was a very close female friend of his. Also, the laughter in the beginning. Sudden and intense grief will do that. When my daughter passed away in 2005 I laughed when I told my boss I had to leave work after I got the news. Idk why I laughed, but I can only guess it had to do with the spiral I fell into and the insanity it cause me. And I thought the same thing. If I could see my daughter one more time I'd do anything, even if I had to go to the other side so to speak. This song to me isn't just about helping others prevent themselves from unliving themselves, but sheds light on the toll it takes on those left behind.
Also, and this is important. Heavy metal is dark. Why? Because it's raw. It's real. I can't think of a single metal/rock song that isn't directly related to an event that either the singer or a member of the band faced. Most metal bands don't have writers. They write themselves, based on material or subjects that are meaningful to them. It can be a happy party song(like disturbed's "fire it up"), it can touch on suicide, it can talk about a lost love (slipknot's "vermillion" and "snuff"), it can tell you you're not the only one and you're stronger than you realize ("welcome to the black parade"). Keep that in mind when you feel that metal music has taken a dark turn.
Also, if metal makes you feel some type of way, take my advise and use it to get through the things in your life that are making you feel that way and relate to it.

I always took it to be sung from the perspective of the demons haunting David over his failure to see the signs and help, taunting and tempting him to commit suicide to "join her".

It upsets me when people think suicide is selfish. To most individuals who attempt or succeed at suicide, it has nothing to do with being selfish. As a person who has attempted, it’s much deeper than that. In the mind of the individual, it’s the only option left to them. As the only available end to the endless hurt. They don’t see it as selfishness, it’s a way of ending their pain along with the pain they are causing their loved ones, if they have any. They are consumed and overwhelmed by that pain and it’s all they see and feel. They see all the pain they are causing and believe it is the only way to end it. They are in such a dark place it’s the only thing they feel they have control over. To make the constant pain come to an end. I am an individual who still struggles every minute of the day with suicidal thoughts and ideation. It’s a very difficult thing for a person to overcome. I don’t know if anyone could understand that without being at that point themselves at some point. Please don’t think that it’s about being selfish.
it is selfish, Yes you are hurting but what you do has an effect on other people and they are refusing to care or think or acknowledge that.
@michaelsullivan7879 bro suicide is not selfish, people may think it's selfish because nothing bad has ever happened in their life other than loved ones passing away, that I can understand cause it always happens and we can't prevent that but all these other reasons for suicides, bro you can't tell me it's selfish, the people that are selfish that tell them to get over it or lighten the fuck up, or grow some balls, those people are selfish because they wouldn't know what these people went through, as a matter of fact they probably wouldn't last a day in their shoes, i have a ton of reasons for suicide but there is one major reason and I don't say nothing cause no one could feel my pain

In other words they're not going to think of others, and unlike people who are actually selfish, it won't be because they think other people don't matter. They literally CAN'T think of others no matter how much they may want to.
That tense moment you had at the end, that is the look of chaos and damnation. This band can really paint a strikingly strong picture. Even the 'playful' beginning where it's like digital strikes me as like 'demonic' in a way just from context of whats going on. It emulates some kind of vibe in me that feels like mocking the scene. The laughs are just another touch to add horror to something that's already absolutely terrifying.
If you cant tell by my display picture/name, I am drawn to these darker emotions, it reaches to people and can bring you back down to earth. Its good every once in a while to be reminded of your mortality. You can achieve more in life if you remember you have one and it's not forever.
Metal is known for having no boarders and dipping into the darker side people turn a blind eye to. They're not about sugar coating things and giving you the raw experience and honest feelings in the moment. A lot of metal musicians have had a lot of bad experiences in their lives and try to express it through their music. As for the laughing that's a common reaction someone has when in shock like that.
As for suicide hurting you loved ones you leave behind, That's usually not how people feel in the moment of suicide. Depression makes you feel you're a burden and only bring others down to your level. You try to hide that side of you for fear of it passing on to them and making them suffer with you so you try to stop yourself from suffering and preventing yourself from hurting those you love. The depression convinces you it's the right choice to make and pushes out any logical thoughts in the moment. It manipulates you into doing everything it can to take control over you and destroy you from the inside out.

to anyone wondering the story behind the song is as follows:
Davids gf from when he was 15 committed suicide and the song is essentially based on what he went through psychologically as a result of the experiece. He is singing from the perspective of the devil telling him to kill himself to be with her. It is an incredibly dark song but incredibly powerful and does something that society primarily ignores it shows the effects of suicide and not just talk about it.
Her name was not actually Devon. They just wrote it like that for the purpose of the rhyme scene in the song. Also, she did not hang herself. She forced herself to overdose on heroin. Apparently the part where David starts doing a bit if a whisper in the song is a recreation of what he heard the devil saying to him.

I think you guys are right about the conclusion of the devil beckoning him to the thoughts of suicide in an effort to join her in hell. Sad shit right there.
The lead singer lost his girlfriend to suicide when he was 16. And the story of how he found her was very similar to this music video. That's why he takes this song very seriously
One of the differences in this song is that he wasn't the one who found her in real life, he was called by his friend who was dating the girl after David broke up with her. What a terrible thing to have to live through.
And she also did of purposeful drug overdose

I would like to just say that as someone who has felt loss this song is a representation of how you can destroy yourself its a song about yelling into the void and disturbed has probably helped many people with this song i know it helped me.

Disturbed has many sounds depending on the album. Next you should react to their song Liberate. Fast and catchy and great to headbang to and not as dark as this.
I believe that the reason he's laughing maniacally, is because he's losing his mind over the fact that he lost his woman.

When lead singer David was 16, he came home to find his girlfriend at the time had taken her own life. The song is his interpretation of Satan talking him into killing himself to join her. Instead, he went to an asylum to rebuild himself. Fortunately, he's wealthy, happy and has a pretty woman and a healthy young son named Teddy. He's a testament to those on the edge of ending themselves, but choose to go on. It can change and be worthwhile.
Having had to process the grief of natural death, murder, and suicide...I can attest that the grieving process for each is very different and varies. Suicide is so ridden with layers of survivors guilt, anger, sadness, resentment... it's a mess to get through... harder than my other experiences because of the hurdles that get in the way of your healing ( especially if you are the one who found the person). The key crazily is to forgive the person who committed suicide and then yourself, understanding it was not your fault and making peace with it. It's a tough journey for alot of people.

The most brutal line (for me) is “Devon, one of eleven” - intentional or not there is a suicide every 11 minutes in the USA.
Also, for some context from David around the evil laugh at the beginning and the perspective of the vocals
