Wireless Apple Car Play for your Harley Touring Model for less than half the cost of Harley WHIM

- In this video I install an apple car play adapter that bypasses the need to buy the Harley Wireless Headset Interface Module. Best part is that it can be bought from amazon for less than $13. I also add a wireless adapter so that I don't have to plug my phone in to the bike to get car play to work and overall price I am still less than half the cost of the Harley WHIM. Great video I installed the CarPlay connector in fairing. One item you need to mention is that after you install the CarPlay jumper you need to go to the bikes GTS system and go to settings and insure that projection is turned on or when you connect the phone CarPlay will not pop up on GTS screen

Great vid thanks! Ive discovered that you do not need to use the eliminator plug if your riding an ultra limited. Simpy bridge pins 2 & 3 RHS of the passenger headset audio 7 pin plug. No need for fairing removal apple play works straight up with cord (simulates mic connected) or wirless device cheers.

I should have covered it a little bit better in the video but another benefit of the CPLAY2Air is that it had is own USB outlet built in to the device which allows you to still plug your phone in and charge it if your battery starts getting low. I will try to include it in one of my upcoming videos to show that.

This is a great setup, what would be even better would be to get the audio from the Boom system back to a non-Sena headset, say Bose Quiet Comforts for example. Right now it looks as if Sena Freewire is the only solution for that and even then may not work. Then you could have Carplay with the Waze and also have XM Satellite feeding audio back to your headphones/earbuds.
Some have had luck with apple air pods. I personally do not own air pods and also prefer to ride without headphones/earplugs but again that is my personal preference.
Sure Bandit, very useful, I've been advised that this doesn't work for the CVO which require Sena headset, can you please advise, I have Ultra CVO 2018

This works great, I've been doing it for about 6 months. The only limitation is if you want to use the microphone for something (siri, writing texts or email on the fly), that doesn't work. Also, if you plug in a wired headset, CarPlay goes away and won't work. I've been doing fine without any of those functions, until a recent 4,000 mile trip, where I had to wear a helmet in some states and lost my CarPlay. I'm having an actual WHIM installed right now and will see if spending an extra $700 moves it up another level.
Yeah that is true but I plan to get SENA bluetooth headsets for me and the old lady and not connecting it them to my phone but just using them so that we can talk which shouldn't pose an issue. Hopefully anyways but I guess I will find out.
@@BanditMotoVlogs What I just found out is, you can connect the headset directly to the phone instead of to the bike, and still use Carplay. This may work out well for you.

@@TammyMeyer1 I installed the Whim and bought a set of Harley branded 50S bluetooth headsets. I picked up a pair of in-ear monitors on Amazon for $23. The difference with this setup is incredible. The monitors eliminate all wind noise and have crystal clear audio, and the intercom is fantastic. Wearing a half helmet, with the microphone hanging out in to open in front of my face, I was able to make a 90MPH phone call to my wife and she heard me clear as a bell. I usually have comfort issues with ear plugs, but have worn these monitors on 12 hour trips with no discomfort at all. The only issue is that when I start everything, I have to do it in order. Turn on the headset, then start the bike, then plug in the phone. If I restart the bike, I have to unplug the phone and plug it back in.
The reason your Carplay won't work is, you have to have a microphone connected before you plug in the phone. That's the same reason I have to do everything in a specific order.

Why wouldn’t the mic function in the phone work because you can answer the phone in stock mode and hear the caller through the speakers. So would you try it while it’s parked in the garage?

Yes as far as I know it is. The apple car play is inactive with nothing in that plug from Harley. Its there way of getting you to purchase the WHIMS. So that plug in is needed to make Apple car play active and the CPLAY2AIR is to make it wireless.

I just noticed that this device is always on. That is, the usb socket on the Street Glide at least is not ignition switched. It must be drawing lots of power because it’s pretty hot!
I have been working on the bike for a week sorry so; it has not been driven and the battery is mostly dead.
Something to consider if you do not drive the bike often.
thanks I did not realize that the usb is always powered so I will keep that in mind. My bike stays on a battery tender when in my garage
Just to be sure, the Cplay2air is always on when connected to the usb? Just want to be sure before I make the move and buy it. Not a big issue as I can just unplug it and put in my truck when not using my bike but if I forget it, I want to know if it’s going to drain the battery.

WHIM is for wireless headsets, not wireless car play. You'll still need the cplay2air with the WHIM if you don't want to plug the phone into the USB socket.
yes you are correct. The plug adapter in the fairing is how you bypass installing the WHIM however if you want it wirelessly then you will still need the CPLAY2AIR or another device like it. Sorry if that wasn't very clear in my video.

As far as I know this won't work with a wireless mic unless you actually have the WHIM from Harley

I followed this process step-by-step, did not work on my 2022 Street Glide ST.
But you cant use bluetooth headset or speakers at the same time ..
I just added the CarPlay 2 on FLHTKUL 2020.
I had the whim installed already but initially it was for headset that was wireless. Which has to be flashed by hd. So question? I have to my HD Sena headset turned o or I won’t get CarPlay.

The only way I have seen to be able to get CarPlay to work with the WHIM without connecting a headset is by getting the dealership to flash it and change the Mic setting in CarPlay to disabled and then you no longer need to connect the headset to get CarPlay. So initially yes you will still have to connect the headset to get CarPlay since you are using the WHIM but it can be disabled by the dealership. Someone may know of a way to do it yourself but I personally do not.

Do you have any suggestions for getting my Nav maps to display on my 2015 FLHTK with a 6/5 GT? Even the Harley dealer couldn't get them to display after re-flashing. I just get a screen of blue with a bike icon on it. Stumped here! (Though I do like the idea of using WAZE as a substitute!)
Sorry I am trying to understand your question properly before providing an answer. You are referring to the previous generation boom system and are you asking about the included Harley navigation on the system?

I installed this adapter last night on my Road Glide. My understanding is the M/C factory radio still works through the bike's speakers and CarPlay is only through headphones. Is this correct? I'm planning to get Apple bluetooth EarPods and see how well I can hear and speak. Have you tried that yet?
With this adapter it will all play through your bike’s speakers no headphones required. Whatever GPS app you prefer to use as well as the music on your phone will play through your speakers
Is that the only brave of wireless converter that will work on a Harley to your knowledge?
There are a lot of brands out there and I know other people have had success with some others. However I chose this one because it had the most/best reviews and it was the only one that specifically listed Harley Davidson under its compatibility (at least when I purchased it anyways).
Mine worked just by updating the radio's software to the latest, did not install any plug. Did have to download the update twice because the first one somehow went wrong and it just looped trying to update.
That's good to know. Mine did not with the update unless there has been a more recent update which I will have to check for. If that's the case then it was only $12 so not upset about it. Do you have a CVO?

Cvo, special, standard, st, doesnt matter . All touring models unless it’s the basic am/fm radio that’s still available , everyone gets a gts system , even if you have ST or cvo, you have the same radio as the standard. Cvo just comes with boom stage 2, so just a speaker change. I’m thinking the new gts system , whatever year that comes , will come factory with android auto/Apple CarPlay.
@@benrakel4408 I just learned unless you have the Harley Davidson whim module which is standard on the CVO you CANNOT do apple play. The work around is the jumper plug fooling the radio you have whim installed and thereby able to make use of apple car play

For the life of me I can’t figure out what I need to do on this 2022 cvo that I just got. Will this work? It has the WHIM but I don’t want to use a headset. Can you point me in the right direction?
From my understanding with the WHIM a headset has to be connected in order for CarPlay to work (I don’t have a WHIM so this isn’t meant to be taken as gospel just my limited understanding). Additionally, once a headset is connected an option will display, or you may have to go into the settings on the infotainment screen, to play audio through the headset or through the speakers. Once you select speakers you can toss the headset in your saddlebag and be on your way with CarPlay. Second option is your local Harley can possibly flash your Boom GTS to allow this to work without the headset (up for debate if this can still be done with the most recent firmware update). And last option would be to remove the WHIM and plug in this piece which tricks the system into thinking there is a WHIM/ headset (this should still work but again I am not 100% positive). In your situation I would not recommend getting rid of the WHIM since your CVO came with it. I would recommend option 1 personally or option 2 if it can still be flashed with the most recent update. Only downside to option 1 is if your headset dies then you lose CarPlay.
Does the microphone works to “wake-up” Siri and speak on the phone?
I do not have a microphone that is linked to the bike or my phone. If you get a sena (or similar device) that Bluetooths to your phone then that should wake up Siri.

Great video. Do you have or heard of any concern about voiding any part of your warranty? I couldn’t find a coherent answer for this question. I guess if you don’t have problem with the entertainment system, you will be fine.
I personally don't have any concern of it and I haven't heard of any issues with warranty but it is also an easy device to remove if needed. And with the new stuff about Harley getting cracked down on for their ridiculous warranty, where anything they can say voids it, I don't foresee it being a problem in the future. If you haven't heard about it apparently Harley is being forced to change their warranty practices because they are taking business away from aftermarket retailers by not allowing you to put anything on your bike that isn't a Harley product. They are apparently starting with Harley but also going to crack down on all vehicle manufacturers that have been doing this.

it works with the Boom GTS which I believe started in 2019. The infotainment system prior to that which has the physical buttons on the sides does not have apple CarPlay capability as far as I know.
I bought a Motorola MA1 to wirelessly connect Android Auto, the WHIM will allow wireless connection to my Sena 20S Evo but only with mono sound unless I go lash out for the Harley branded Sena. Pain in the butt. Will the plug allow the harley Boombox to connect to the Sena with stereo sound without having to lash out for a Harley branded Sena

Honestly I am not sure as I do not have a Sena currently. However I do plan to get one in the near future. My assumption is that it will not. All the plug does is trick the system into accessing CarPlay or Android auto (as if you had a WHIM installed) so my assumption is that it would be no different than your current WHIM.
How do I get this to sync to my Sena headset??
as far as I understand it if you try and link your sena to your phone then you will lose the Car Play functionality but I am not 100% sure. I plan to purchase a SENA in the near future and will do some testing on it.

I did get it to work by getting a new apple cable. I had an after market that works in my car, but not on the bike. I just bought a wireless device which is great, but you don’t get the charging feature that is needed for long rides.

That is a good question. I have not tried since I currently do not have a bluetooth intercom device but I do plan to get one here in the near future. My assumption is that you should be able to with an intercom device like SENA. Sorry I do not have a more specific answer for you.
