Harley Wireless Headset Interface Module-WHIM-Boom Box-What You Must Know-PROBLEMS?

- Everything you need to know about the Harley-Davidson Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM) for the Boom Box Infotainment System.
It will only work properly with Harley-Davidson Wireless Bluetooth Headsets, which are made by Sena. That is the only way you will get wireless stereo sound from your WHIM. If you try to use a regular Sena Bluetooth headset, you'll only get mono sound. You'll get the same issue if you try to pair other motorcycle Bluetooth headsets, such as Cardo Systems.
And this is what I call the "Harley Tax". This is just one instance of Harley sticking it to their customers. The Boom Box should have originally come with Bluetooth headset connectivity and that was a big screw up by Harley-Davidson. Now, the company wants their customers to spend upwards of $1000 to fix their mistake with the WHIM. If the continuing Boom Box issues have not already left a sour taste in many Harley owner's mouths, then this debacle certainly will.
With the WHIM you will get full wireless Boom Box integration such as voice commands, turn-by-turn navigation, and rider/passenger communications. We still say the Sena Freewire is a better option, as it is cheaper and you'll get stereo sound even with regular Sena headsets out there. With the Freewire, you also get full Boom Box integration and rider/passenger communications.
Note: 2014 & newer Harley models with the Boom Box must purchase the WHIM on their own and install it as an "add-on". 2018 & newer CVO model Harley with the Boom Box are coming already equipped with the WHIM out fo the factory.

I totally agree and run a SENA 20S with a Freewire attached. I installed the 7 PIN to the faring on my 2015 Streetglide special and placed the port in the fairing like the CVO models. Works awesome and no necessary flash from a dealer.

Ryan wish I would have passed on this system. The WHIM does not work like it should. Unpaired the helmets from the boom box. The intercom was terrible.

I flashed my Sena 20S with the HD version of the firmware and it fixed my connecting issues. But who knows how long that will last. Don,t know about the stereo yet, will update.
Also paired my Uclear to the Harley same hassle connecting the unflashed 20S but it worked.

I'm glad Harley Davidson offers a genuine alternative. It's true if you already have a wireless headset you will be saving around $200 for a 1 up system. In my case I'm picking up a 2018 FLTRXS which requires no extra harness and I have no headset so I'm ahead by going all HD.
I think you just answered as I watch the rest of the video lol so I f I get the whim in my bike 2019 SGS and the dual pack with the whim on my bike we can both get stereo sound and he doesn’t need the free wire is that correct ?
Have an Ultra Limited that already has console 7 Pin. Can I install an additional 7 pin cable to the unused connector in the faring without consequence so I can mount the Freewire in the faring compartment? Where do you recommend to connect for power-would also run power into the faring compartment? The big downside to using the freewire with the external console connector is the wires can mar the paint finish on the tank as they bounce around. Had to buff out some small spots.
I read/heard on an installation video that the WHIM will interfere with the XM reception when it's located where HD recommends. I've got a Road Glide and have a JM amp, so there's a different mounting plate. Instead of dealing with the bracket and locating it near the XM, can't I just wire tie the WHIM on the other side of the stereo? I can't imagine it's that heavy that I can't hold it in place... there's a ton of stuff up in there. (BTW, I don't have a headset, so I'm just going to buy the HD one).

My hubby has 11 CVO ultra I a 2019 SGS I was going to get the dual pack 20 s eco harley so it will work with my bike but will my hubby need the free wire since his bike doesn’t have the boom box any way ? Thank you in advance

So if I have the whim and have just phone and intercom on headset and music through the speakers in fairing I don’t need the H-D sena? Or will the mic not work?
When I pair my headset I can no long control my volume of my radio speakers unless I go in to settings. I also cant move to the next song. Is this normal? Once I turn off the headset it goes back to normal.
I have the WHIM in my 2017 ultra limited and the Harley boom no2 helmet. I can’t get my apps to show on the screen. What am I missing?

Is the SENA Freewire the same as the SENA SM10 which I used on my 2010 Ultra Classic via their 7pin wired tank console connection?
Otherwise, I will just use my SENA headset connected to my phone for music.
Just had a whim module installed I have a 30k boom head set went through the tutorial and only have projection on and off no wireless headset connection on bike screen ????
Can you use the Freewire instead of WHIM to get Apple CARPLAY for full function?

Bought 2 sena freewires and I now barely hear anything, tried to increase volume and I get distortion, back to my Sena 20s matched to my phone headset sounds great, what is my problem
Ryan, New to your site. It's very informative and I appreciate your presenting alternatives. One question, will the WHIM pair with the Shuberth Sena SC1 and the Sena SMH10 on the Bell MAg9?
The WHIM will pair with Sena products. With that said, you need the HD branded Sena to get full stereo sound.

Ryan, I purchased the WHIM. Here are my reviews. I already own the Sena 20S. 2015 SGS
1. (PRO for WHIM) Even though it has mono sound, it provided a more sound volume vs. the Freewire. The mono sound does not bother me because I don't listen to music inside my helmet.
2. (PRO for WHIM)1 Whim vs 2 Freewires. I ride with a passenger about 40% of the time. You can change the settings for the rider and passenger.
3. (PRO for WHIM) Freewire battery would expire at exactly 12 hours. WHIM is powered by the bike.
4. (CON for WHIM) Installed the WHIM myself. Paid $45 for HD to flash my radio.
5. (CON for WHIM) I use an Android phone. After the installation my music files would not show the song being played. However, I have not figured out if it is due to the Boom update or the WHIM. I may disconnect the WHIM to see if it changes. This issue does not affect iPhones (verified).
6. (PRO for WHIM) My cost: WHIM plus adapter and flash $495. 2 Freewires $500 Dual pack 20s $400.

What was fixed Ike?
I paid the Harley tax, and bought the HD Sena 30K dual set. It replaced the 30K Sena set I already had 🤬 finally got my Apple CarPlay to work.
Ryan, I know you plug your store but you can get the WHIM on-line for less. I bought the WHIM for $244, the extra cable, which I'm not sure you need if you don't have a CB, for $40 and I bought a 2-pack HD branded headsets for $448. I bought it for me and my wife but if others are interested they could buy the pair and split it. It's only $224 each that way instead of $270. Thanks for the videos. I think it sucks that people who own Sena products can't get stereo, maybe Sena will put out a software update and fix the problem.

Had the WHIM fitted by the dealer,I also bought the HD (Sena) 20s evo headset and I'm having problems,I can put my helmet on with the IGN switch set to either IGN or ACC every thing is good,but once I start the bike the volume is reduced and I can hear a lot of interference.....When you say the boom box then has to be flashed buy the dealer,what is meant by flashed?..Is it just a software update to the boom box?
Yes, it's a software flash (update) that the dealer does.

When you say HD sena HEADSET ..Is the sena HD outrush r helmet included?? NOT just the sena MIKE & SPEAKER COMBO?

Just FYI, no added HD cable required on 2018 bikes and you can get a 2 pack HD/Sena headsets for $550, so you’re looking at $850 for 2 riders going WHIM + the flash. Also, with the WHIM, all configuration and user settings for driver and passenger are controlled via the touch screen on the BOOM.

So my 1st question is, I can buy the sena module, connect 1 BT helemt module to it. That would afford me the stereo and all HD menu connectivity correct?
2nd question, If I have a passenger with another helmet module can we talk to each other?
The way I would think it should work would be, they should be able to talk to each but the passenger wouldn’t get anything from the bike. So the passenger could use thier phone for tunes or talking.
Yes, the Sena Freewire offers stereo sound and is fully functional with the Boom Box. You'll need a second Sena Freewire for your passenger. Then you can have communications through the Boom Box with each other. Can you use Cardo headsets with the WHIM My dealership says only SENA will work? Errr...
We hear Cardo will connect but you only get mono sound and not full integration.

The sena 30s will share music with the group/ rider and passenger.. Would that eliminate the need for a freewire for each headset
Won't hear your Boom Box that way. Need to be synced with Boom Box.
My question is have those with the non HD stamped 20's gone to the Harley owners page and done to 20's update? That's something I would try. I'm not exactly sure how they would put put a reader in that would tell the system if it's HD stamped or not. This video brings out my radio investigation side.
The latest Sena software update will not fix this. Sena support will tell you that no update will fix it.

Actually I updated my sent 20S with he Harley firmware and the stereo sound worked fine - no problem. But my mic didn't! Bizarre! I thought it might be my mic but that works fine (checked by pairing with my phone). However I found the fix. You have to have a Harley Sena 20S helmet mount - which I have for a second helmet.
When plugged into that everything works fine - and it works REALLY well).
I do also have a Sena Cavalry Helmet and that does sound crappy but when I wear that helmet in summer, I only want to use it for phone or CB and mono for that is fine. So I'm super happy. Got my full face with a 20S for winter, and my Cavalry half helmet for summer, both connected over BT to my Harley using the WHIM.

The only way we know to get full Apple Car Play integration is a WHIM and a headset. We've heard of people using jumpers you can find on Amazon with mixed reviews.

Thanks for 1/2 of the cost benefit analysis. If you do the SENA cost analysis for 2 riders, that’s even more expensive. So looks like we’ll be better off paying the HD tax vs the SENA tax, since we’re coming into this with a clean slate on a 2018 SGS.
Per the info in the video, it will depend on each biker and what they already have. If they have Sena headsets then they'll consider the Freewire. If starting from scratch then maybe the WHIM. I'd still personally do the Freewire, so I'm not stuck to using HD stamped products for stereo sound.
Ryan Urlacher - Agree, starting from scratch for two up, the WHIM is the better way, maybe just slightly, but I’m gonna do it. If I was a solo rider, SENA all the way👍🏽
In this video you say the sena does full integration but in a previous video about the sena you said there were things you weren't able to do like maybe take calls or use voice prompts. Does this mean sena has patched the software since that video?

I heard you could just purchase the part from Harley that the sena20s plugs into for around 150 each then download the Harley firmware into your existing 20s and that will work? Do you know if that will work! Not much of a savings but every little bit helps.

With my sena 20s synced to the phone and phone synced to bike I am able to answer the phone by touching answer on the Harley display. I can hear the incoming caller but they can't hear me is that the typical issue?

Why do you have to have a Sena Helmet/headset? I have a Schuberth with SRC, why wouldn't this work? Both are standard Bluetooth....
True, but they don't all play well together. Sena has become the standard.

Michael, that's incorrect. YOU GET VOICE COMMANDS AND FULL FUNCTIONALITY WITH THE FREEWIRE. We use them heavily around here and we've put out video and info on this channel about it. The Freewire DOES EVERYTHING the WHIM does. It looks like the software download for the WHIM does not need to be done by a dealer. It is currently available on the Harley-Davidson website with the other software updates.
I run a cb radio off my free wire. Luckily I also have a Polaris Challenger, easy hookup.
Now the whim is $400. The freewire has no audio out to the bike true the mic plug on my 2023 Harley. Only the oem headset works.
Does the passenger to driver intercom work with the WHIM and non Harley stamped S na 20s?
We understand that it does, but the audio is horrible (mono).

Yes, intercom will work with regular Sena headsets.
It won't fix it. Per Sena support themselves. There will be no "update" to fix this.

You only need the additional harness on 2014-2017 models. You actually CAN get stereo sound with non-Harley branded SENA headsets. All you need is the HD helmet mounting plate (sold by Revzilla) for around $124.95. Download the appropriate firmware for the headset and you'll have stereo sound.

So I bought and installed the WHIM and got my boombox flashed.
I updated the WHIM with the latest firmware and I also updated my 20S with Harley's 20S firmware.
The playback worked fine - great stereo sound. But the mic didn't work!
I did find a fix tho.
You have to use your Sena 20S with a Harley helmet mount. I have two helmets and bought a second 20S mount (the Harley one) so I could easily swap the 20S between helmets.
(By the way my Sena mount works fine with my phone so I know the mic is ok)
Well my Sena 20S now works fine with the WHIM (Stereo sound and mic working for phone and bike) when I plug it into a Harley helmet mount. Got that from Revzilla for around $110.

When I re-read the review it seems like the issue was with mic functionality more so than audio quality. The reviewer stated that when he downloaded the HD 20S firmware update and installed it to his non-HD branded 20S he had full stereo audio. I apologize for my confusion.
Are you running two Senna headsets with your Freewire?
I have a 10U for my Neotec and a 10s for my half helmet and there looks like no easy way to use both helmets without having to pair each headset before a chose to ride.

Yup, many of us do that. You'll just have to pair whichever helmet you're using with the Freewire.

The problem with the "WHIM" and non HD branded headsets is, Harley made a deal with Sena to use the new AptX high quality audio codec. The "WHIM" supports both ApTx and A2DP stereo streaming protocol as well. The problem with the Non-HD branded headsets is they don't have this new "ApTx" protocol and it can't be added by merely updating the software with the HD Software for the 20s. Sena has made a hardware change in the HD version to support this new protocol. the MOCO has cornered you into buying their product to obtain the best sound from your Bluetooth Integration. Also, if you use the HD branded headset, a whole new menu of options are available to configure your headsets directly from the bike.

Advantage to the WHIM? You only need one WHIM unit to operate two H-D 20S headsets. With Sena 20S & Freewire, you need one Freewire unit for EACH 20S headset. Trust me. I'd also double check the info that a Sena 20S coupled with WHIM only produces monaural sound. I believe that yet another Sena 20S firmware update is available to take care of this. But I get your drift otherwise.
It's stated in detail in this video about the WHIM and two headsets. Software update will not fix the mono issue.
Harley really f’d up on this one. I have a 2019 rgs with the new stereo. They hype all the capabilities while not mentioning all the add ons needed to make it function. One pays $28000 for a new bike and then another $1000 for the whim and install and another $1000 for the boom Audio amp and install. Not only that but maybe I don’t want my brand new $28000 motorcycle torn apart. Put the thing in from the factory.

Nope, HD won't fix it. They want you to only buy their 20's headset.
But I wonder if that was the case why would they made the 20s work at all ? They could have not allowed it to pair. Ryan did you try yourself to upload HD Sena headset firmware into Sena 20s? There are many indefinite news about this over the internet
Only the HARLEY DAVIDSON stamped Sena 20S will work in stereo. That's what HD wants. They won't allow a regular non HD stamped 20s to have stereo sound, but only mono. You must buy the HD stamped one for stereo. And by uploading the HD sena software into a regular 20S....NO you won't get stereo sound. We've tested it. Be careful what your read on those sketchy HD forums where you don't know who is giving the info or what their actual experience level is.
Damn, I have a Schuberth C4 with the SC1 Advanced. This info sucks...This means I have to live with Mono?
Sooooooo, I gotta ask, I have a 2019 Roadglide Special & all I want to do is leave my existing Boom Box system unscathed and just be able to make & answer calls while I ride. I do not want to attempt to integrate to the Boom Box at all because this is disheartening to know I just spent over $36k on my bike to include upgrades and I will still have to cough up approximately $700+ to do so through the Boom Box system. As much as I'm partial & loyal to the HD brand, this truly sucks.
You can always buy a bluetooth headset and pair it directly to you phone. You can answer calls and listen to music on you phone. You just won't have boom box integration.

So my total order was 759.00 it included the Whim, harness,and HD 20 dual pack. 125.00 to install and flash. Oddly enough it was the HD S20's that cost the most, 454.00 still cheaper to buy the hd branded ones than Th Sena S20 from other suppliers......shocking I know but it was the only reason I bought them from Harley. Keep in mind that you need 2 freewires if you ride 2 up. That is 500.00 just for those 2 pieces. S20 dual pack 525.00 so it was cheaper for me to go Harley.
As stated in this very video........you need one freewire for the rider and if you have a passenger you'll need another freewire. At $250 each that's $500 if you want two. And the Freewire can be used with current non HD headsets in stereo sound w/o a dealership flash. The HD stamped Sena 20S is $299 on their site. I called Harley on this and apparently there is no "Harley Tax". I can certainly understand why someone would arrive at that conclusion because their catalog is chock full of rebranded stuff with a big price tag. My wife wears a Shoei NeoTech II Helmet and there is really no easy way to install a comm system in it other that the internal Sena deal. So I called both companies to voice my opinion. I was surprised to learn that this is NOT Harley's doing, but in fact--SENA's. Apparently Sena is limiting the license, not the other way around. I understand they are in biz to make money. What I don't get is holding customers hostage.

I have an 18 CVO road glide and before doing the research purchased a neotech II with the SRL. Works great with my android but can't get it to pair with BOOM!. Maybe I need to unpair with the phone and then pair the headset with the boom only. Then pair the phone to the the Boom itself. I don't know I spent hours this weekend trying to get it to pair and gave up . Anyway I have a harley logo headset and took the SRL out of the helmet and installed the Harley one on the neotec. You have to shift the clamp back behind the plate where the SRL goes and mouth piece is a mess. I haven't done anything with it yet. Just got pissed and walked away. It shouldn't be this hard.
Technology is pricey. We use the old school hard wired headsets. They work. They plug right into my bike, all we had to do was find someone with a Harley headset they don't use which was easy. Don't the Bluetooth versions need to be recharged?
Yah, we still think wired is great too. That's why we sell our Biker Boom IMC wired headsets in our store. Just as good as the HD stamped wired sets, but cheaper in price. Ok, ride with the wife A LOT on my SGS. Currently have no 7 pin and we are using a pair of SMH10's. Problem Freewire doesn't work with those head sets. What is the best and most ecconomical solution to this situation? Don't believe I can even run dual wired headsets on the Street Glide. Help!

We would need two freewires, two headsets, and not sure if you can connect two freewires without a seven pin connector
get the Harley cable to add the 7 pin connection to your Streetglide but leave it in the fairing and push the connector out thru the pocket for your Freewire.
I don't think anyone understands me. My headsets do not work with the freeware. Why or how would two devices that are not compatible with my headsets help me? George I understand how to push it through the glove box but how will that help?

Come on Ryan you look mad! Whatever the bike you have you will always pay "the tax". Go in a BMW store and take a look at the price of their accessories...to me the most important part is to communicate with the passenger. It looks that it will cost 400$ with the Sena to do it and you still have to live with the infamous cord. If you can buy a Touring bike, I guess you have the money to pay for the Whim. Still, your videos are great and don't get fired up. It's bad for the blood pressure .

That's why I rarely buy HD stuff. I buy other companies aftermarket stuff for my bikes. After I buy a Harley, I'm pretty much done with their stuff.

two modules, plus two headsets (HD or not) will cost more then then HD WHIM, headsets, harness and flash. with the freewire you will still have exposed wiring (from 7 pin to wherever you hide it).
I understand that it is less expensive to go the freewire route if you already have BT headsets but not if you are buying everything.

It will depend on whether you already have Sena headsets that will readily work with the Freewire. and on and on......Each biker will have to make that personal financial decisions. Many can be up and running for $250 with a Freewire and "stereo" sound, because they arleady own a headset. Spend your money how you want. Really, I don't care. I'm just providing the information.

You are soooo right. Funny thing is many went out and purchased the WHIM w/o much thought and wanting to trust Harley. Now they are pissed off at Harley in a bad way and are ripping the WHIM out. We are getting the emails. They'll be many used WHIM's for sale on eBay... :-0)
I added the WHIM and not very pleased with the product. It does connect with regular Sena 20S and Cardo Packtalk with no problems. As LAB mentioned you only get mono sound if using other then HD wireless devices. Such a rip off, I can connect directly to my cell phone for music and gps. Who needs a cb connection, so old school. Maybe HD mothership will listen and add a fix.
You would think for $45K Harley would at least provide two headsets since most people who buy touring bikes do ride with a passenger. Oh well mine came with one headset and a free t-shirt lol.

I was once told that the cheapest thing in the HD store was the bike; everything else you wanted to buy to accessorise your ride would require an organ donation of some sort. (Can Am follow the same philosophy)
I was fortunate enough to find LAB and Ryan's excellent 'How to' videos early in the year when I got my new Road Glide and a good mate bought a Street Glide.
After watching the Freewire install we both went the full Sena route and set up our bikes as per Ryan's instructions, haven't looked back.
HD can stick their WHIM where their mother never kissed them! Sick & Tired of being shafted for every bit of bling I put on my ride.
Rant finished, time for a JD & Coke and a good lie down. 😤😤😤
A LD and Coke is what the doctor ordered!

I will say it again test drive a Indian its all included works great! Rides better and electric windshield.
