I love how many people are doing Beastie reactions lately. It's awesome that these hip hop pioneers are getting exposed to a new generation that had no idea how good these guys were.
Its the swTrend that should have happened ages ago. I'm waiting for another fav of mine to be a quick trend. Canadian band. The Tragically Hip. I'm happy with BB though!
I thought it was just me but yeah it seems like there has been a lot of reaction videos as of late. Wish the bonnaroo set was still up for everyone to check out
in the line where Mike D says "well everybody rapping like it's a commercial, acting like life is a big commercial" he was suppose to say "well everybody rapping like it's a commercial, acting like life is a big REHEARSAL" but he said "commercial" twice while recording it, and the two Adams refused to let him change it and re-record it, just to fuck with him. I always think of that story when I hear this song.
THANK YOU!! I've been wondering about this line and rhyming commercial with commercial since I first heard this in the late 90s, I knew there had to be something to it. Thanks
the scene you give props to is deeper than you realize. The person rapping, Mike D, used to wear a stolen VW logo on a chain when they started out, now he's rappin in reflection of a spinning VW wheel....
An added layer to that hubcap shot is that it's Mike D rapping in the reflection off a VW hubcap, and he used to always wear a VW hood ornament as a pendant during the Licensed to Ill era.
Believe it or not because your young. The casual hip hop fans turned on them after their first album Licensed To I’ll. The one with Paul Revere. Because they were doing all these experimental sounds. Your generation is used to that. It’s the true hip hop fans and the alternative rock crowd that stuck by them and kept them famous. They were the original hipsters before that was even a saying. They were the first white guys to mix up the classic adidas with the punk rock shirts and flannels. You should check out Paul’s Boutique. Not do a reaction but just listen to it on your own. It’s mind blowing.
MCA went by the name Nathaniel Hornblower when he produced their videos. Check out their live concert video called, Awesome I fuckin shot that, they played MSG amd handed out a bunch of video cameras before the show and told the people hey shoot whatever you want and turned it into a concert video. It's cool as hell.
They're just playing musically. Like, there is so much play and fun and soul and groove and just messing around having fun in this music. So much respect. This shit is on another level, I don't care what anyone says.
Beastie Boys were extremely influential for almost every aspect of hip-hop. Production/sampling, mixing other genres into hip-hop, flows and music videos. On the Artifacts track C'mon wit da come on they also do a bit where they film their reflection on a spinning rim.
As someone the same age as them, who hung around with the same people, let me see if I can clear up the business about the Beasties and Punk Rock. "Punk Rock" is what it sounds like when Punks play Rock music, and the Beastie Boys is what it sounds like when Punks perform hip hop. The Clash were already doing this (badly) in 1981, and Johnny Rotten was doing the same with Bambaataa in '83. From the moment Cookie Puss dropped the BBs injected the Punk element into hip hop, and it's still there to this day. The reason they sound perfectly aligned with true hip hop is that they are the founding fathers of one aspect of it. They don't sound like the future, the future sounds like them.
Respect for checking out one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time. As a 45 year old white guy- I can remember when their first album dropped. I was in 6th grade and across the street from my school was some pj's- All we heard for a month was people blasting Brass Monkey. These guys played their on instruments on every album. Real musicians not auto tuned like today. Beastie Boys are legit. Check out their song with Nas. Respect!
That guitar sample is from an old all black hardcore punk band called The Bad Brains. The song was the right brigade... The B-boys took inspiration and samples from EVERYWHERE.
one last thing cuz you said about directing your own video. They are the most do it yourself band ever. They direct their videos they take their own photography they produce their records they write their records they play their instruments they do the scratching on the on the records they do everything themselves when there wasn't a lane for them they made a lane. now I love LL Cool J but when he was wearing velor tracksuits these guys had street wear, Adidas skateboards and beanie hats today I don't see anyone wearing velor tracksuits and kangols but everybody's got Street Wear and a skateboard and a beanie cap. 1983 by themselves they put out their first hip hop joint Cookie Puss 1983 that's a long time ago the Beastie Boys are official as anyone. oh yeah and AD Rock discovered LL Cool J and made the beat for I need a Beat these guys deserve some shine.
all of these. NO ONE knows Pop Your Balloon lowkey the best twerking song ever, and Maestro is genius. What a catalog he could do it for months and we could eat it up
This is my favorite single bar ever: “But for now / I’d like to ask you how / You like the feel of the bass in your face in the crowd.” I’m not saying it’s the best ever, just my favorite. And that beat is just HARD. Thanks for doing this song, man. Love.
I always liked "I give thanks for inspiration / It guides my mind along the way / A lot of people get jealous, they're talkin' about me / But that's just cause they haven't got a thing to say"
They used to buy albums like no one else. They’re sampling skills are 2nd to none. The heavy part is bad brains, that bass chorus hook is Big Sur suite by John Hammond and like 6 others. Craziness
The thing that blew me away about this song was the Bad Brains sample (big takeover) I was floored when I heard that. It is the guitar you hear. Also if you ever watch a live video with MMM as the DJ the switch the beats live without the Emcees knowing what is coming and they don't miss a beat. True Hip Hop.
Just keep heading down this rabbit hole! Get lyric vids if you can, in my opinion. The videos are so entertaining its easy to lose the focus on the rapping. I'm waiting to see if you watch Root Down. Sheeesh. I remember the break dancing. I had a not bad robot with white gloves.

Beasties second album, Paul’s Boutique, you may as well listen to the whole album. It’s THAT good. And nobody is reacting to these songs which I don’t understand because it’s one the best hip hop albums ever created. Probably has the record for most songs sampled on one album. funny the reactor community is overlooking pauls boutique cause when it was released the whole music world overlooked it too. Nobody cared about the beasties in 89.
Recorded and filmed at their studio they built in that crap hole building. After their second album bombed they retreated from the LA Studio lifestyle and built their own pad with skateboard shit basketball shit and recording equipment with their instruments. This album blew them up.
When they were making this album (check your head) they had decided to showcase more live instrumental music as opposed to the previous album, Paul's Boutique which was very sample heavy.
Also just a heads up most Beastie Boys music videos feature different versions of the song than whats on the actual album. That goes for Shake Your Rump, Hey Ladies, 3 MCs and 1 DJ, Body Movin, Shadrach, Pass the Mic, So Whatcha Want, Rhymin & Stealin....
I like your honesty. I only saw them once in '94 with cypress hill, but it was amazing. I used to rap battle in '85, when they came out, at recess between run dmc, beasties and LL Cool Jay (hard as hell). City school. I saw run dmc 3 times with jammaster jay. DJ Hurricane was sick for the beasties. Mixmaster mike was ridiculous! RIP MCA!

only the bomb squad (shocklee brothers) production for public enemy can compete with the beasties production values (primarily thanks to the dust brothers/hurricane and then mario c/mixmaster mike). that said, beaties made a lot of their own beats and played a lot of the music themselves, so they were way beyond everyone then and pretty much since. their punk days elevated their hip-hop game to next level.

They have many switches in rythm and variety in their music because simply they are musicians!the begun as a punk rock band, with knowledge of jazz, rock, ballroom music and this knowledge makes them stand out.opposed to anything you are used to..to make this you really have to know to play music..

They had us snatching Volkswagen hood ornaments in the mid 80s and wearing them on chains on our neck.
Also had people snagging those fish-lens mirrors off of parking garages.
My dumb ass got caught snatching a vw hood ornament, went to run, tripped over my boy's skateboard twisted my ankle and went down....
No computers, all skill. Their live shit is even wilder.
