Rebuilt my 1.8 in my Celica GT. 30 over , new pistons and rings (5 hole oil drain ones) bearings, chain and sprockets, oil pump, full gasket set and lots of other parts. Cost about 800$. Good thing it's not a 2zz cause you can't rebore the cylinders because of the " for life " liners. It turned out great and I driver her alot.
Machine shop did all machine work on the block, supplied pistons, rings. Crank was home checked and polished. Bearings were std. Conrod bearings are 3 different sizes per when manufactured so you have to order what is used . Number is on the bearings. Oil pump, chains ,guides and all other replacables and full gasket set where bought individually on one order. Having the factor shop manual helps a lot. Down load from the net. Took about a month in my family room at home. That's alot to it so go slow and careful. If I could do it anyone can.
Hi therefrom West coast Ireland. Having exactly the same smoking issue with my Celica 2001 right now. About to replace the valve stem seals and anything else that needs doing. Watched your first vid so far and looking forward to the rest. Good work mate 👍
@@tonedubb4325 the oil burning and smoking increased over a period of about 6months, slowly at first, the last month was high, close to 1 litre per week and the smoking was high. In the end the engine light that had been on for all these months started flashing so I parked her up at home and prepared for the repair project. Engine is out now, just taken head off. All valves are black, especially far right side. The spark plug for this one is sticky black. And its exhaust manifold hold blacker than others also. Not taken valve stem seals off yet and about to remove sump to look at piston rings etc. So it’s a strip and rebuild. Going to make it a fun project. Do you want to se pics? How to send to you if so? Think I have your last vid to watch if there is one after your piston ring install. Thanks for asking friend 🙌
After removing the intake manifold, I accidentally flip-flopped the two vacuum hoses on the engine. It'd cause the engine to suck in excessive amount of oil and cause a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust. I don't believe you did that. 1. If your pcv valve is bad, that will cause an oil burning problem. Dirty intake manifold is a sign. 2. If your piston rings are gunked up, oil will come through the side of the pistons. Most likely, the case here. This happens when you don't change oil often enough. Before you go crazy with the rebuild, check the crankshaft and bearings to make sure they are in good condition. Check the cylinder walls for damages. Then, you can rebuild the engine by replacing piston rings, valve seals, head gasket, timing chain, water pump, pcv valve, fuel injector filters, serpentine belt, spark plugs, intake exhaust manifold gaskets. Buy a rebuild kit. It will have all the replacement parts in it. Don't forget to lap your intake and exhaust valves to make sure they are seated properly.
The walls of each cylinder still in great shape. No scratches. They're smooth and still able see the original criss-cross lines made by the hone tool. I used the flat stones hone tool to resurface the walls then installed new rings i got from ebay. Not Toyota rings. The oil rings are slightly different in design. They should be ok. It will be on next next video. The next video will be upper block reinstall new valve seals and valves.
Good one regarding the ‘post facelift’ 8 oil-ring runaways. You are the second to mention this and I will be getting these one’s for mine. If you have a part number for the new one’s that would be great. If not I’ll find it 👍
where does the wire go and connects to (in video 3:17 to 3:21 time) after the ignition coil on the left side? Mine got disconnected i unable to figure out where to connect it.
@@tonedubb4325 I know what they are I was suggesting to you it was the stems but when I read the comments and watched the remainder of the video you confirmed. Did you do a wet and dry compression test before doing all that work.
Dry compression. After everything reassembled. I didn't do one at the beginning. But I'm sure they're not great. Rings all and oil holes were clogged or covered with caked burnt oil.
Thank you for sharing this video. I have a 2000 Celica GT that needs new pistons and your video is helping me learn.
Good luck.

Nice
The 2zzge is thankfully superior in every way
Did you buy everything individually or a kit ? And .30 over pistons ? Or you had machine shop go .30 over in cylinders

Oh and piston are floating type so you don't have to press the pins in place. Just make sure the rod bushings are good and slide smoothly on the pins.

Is your car starting burning oil recently, or has it been doing that for a while?

Awesome job! What is the condition of each cylinder wall? Any deep scratches? Will you use Toyota's redesigned pistons with 8 oil-ring holes?

There's a plug down. I remembered that plug was strapped on the power steering pipe. I'll check it another day to see where it leads to.
It connected to the power steering pump.
What you use to shine everything ?
Valve stem seals? Oppp notices you mention that in the comments. Did you do a dry and wet compression test?
Those get brittle and won't seal properly due to the heat and age. Just google valve stem seals to get a better picture of them.
