Saw Matt live many times, although never once was he wearing a jacket and tie. He was very generous with his time and would hang on the bar during his break and chat. So glad someone filmed this artists doing their thing.
I saw Matt with sax player Grady Gaines in a small blues club in Houston once. He was playing through an old tweed Fender Champ, miked up of course, but he was getting some incredible tones.
oh yeah I saw him at Harpers Ferry bar in Brookline, MA in 1988. He was fronting a 6 piece band. They opened the gig playing up tempo bebop Charlie Parker tunes and ended the show w/Blues Bro., Motown tunes etc.
@@matrox I did hear the bass coming from the piano (kind of like when Ray M played bass on his keyboard(s) for the Doors, although sometimes they did bring in somebody to play bass.) And listening to a combo WITH an upright bass player, it kind of made me with this combo had had one as well. Still, one of the best jams I've ever heard.
Matt Murphy was Aretha Franklin's guitarist boy friend during the jam session in the diner in "The Blues Brothers". ua-cam.com/video/RTXszRHc0qs/v-deo.html
Too bad there weren't more close-ups of Matt. He would raise his eyebrows when he was digging down deep, the rest of the time his expression was pretty even-keel. It's similar to the way Broadway singers are trained not to scowl; they are 'allowed' to raise their eyebrows but not wrinkle the brow.

Great, classical and basic!
Pioneers and musical foundation builders for the Blues and Rock and roll.
Pure enjoyment. The only folks having more fun than the audience were the musicians! Matt Murphy is an Ameeican treasure [RIP]
Matt "Guitar" Murphy - a name well earned, one of my all time favorite guitar players. All three, wonderful talent.
R.I.P. Matt Guitar Murphy

Dang! A jazz-blues hybrid like T-Bone Walker. No wonder his best scene in Blues Brothers is "Minnie the Moocher" with Cab Callaway.
"Blues- jazz, really..."
Fantastic recording. They sure got all the levels right.
I knew Matt Murphy could play but this is great stuff.
Yes and its good to know that he was such a great Pioneer. He is such a legend 🥰🥰

he didn't get to do much at all in The Blues Brothers. "We got everybody but Blue Lou Marini and Matt Guitar Murphy and we're gettin' them next".
Thanks for putting this wonderful video on to see how good these guys were live
I saw Matt at the grand emporium in Kansas City in1988. He tuned his guitar with an oscilloscope. That was cool daddy O.
Matt Murphy is one of the greats!! Can not keep up with those moves! MMLZZZ

Ashamed to say I didnt know of Matt Guitar Murphy until I saw the Blues Brothers Movie with John Belushi

Memphis Slim has a style I enjoy. Great gig here. December 24,2023
Wow, making it look so easy.
Good Lord. Just great. Wow!

Lol jazz had been around for 40 years before this

When I hear " the king", Elvis doesn't come to mind. Matt guitar Murphy does.

Nice very good old boogie voogie........😎😎😎😎
Well filmed
Excellent!!!
A kick ass combo.
Agreed. But I was surprised that there was no bass player.
@@samk4801 Didn't need it, the piano was playing the basslines.

@@samk4801 Yeh...definantely a sweet jam session.
@@samk4801 Yeh...Ray made it look easy as his keyboard licks would be signature lead solos making the songs the classics they were.
Classy jamming.
The great BILLIE STEPNEY!Gone too soon!!
sounds great!
Real blues brothers
Billie Stepney is my daughter great grandfather. My husband grandfather.
NO ONE had to tell this fellow that he could play guitar
Alot of the fastest shredders cant put together a lengthy blues progression. It's harder than it looks.
Billy Stepney
Tocavam. Quase. Nada. Sou. Brasileiro. Very. Good.
I wonder if any member of The Beatles was present during this concert?
I believe this must have been the first European Blues Festival.. I have vinyls from later ones, 65 or 66, with Otis Rush et al
que buena versión saludos desde Tijuana
I love this mercy from Memphis slim. Check the piano.
Ace guitarist, verging on jazz this.
JUMP BLUES BABY !

Even if you stutter a sentence, it's meaning is fully known.
FABULEUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How tall was Jimmy Reed??
The things I would do to get my hands on that "335" ! ..... God forgive me.
Memphis Slim had a very low opinion of most guitarists and Matt Murphy was about the only one he was prepared to work with!
That is dog gonna groovy
Ça c'est encore le blues
Smokin!
without your 4 fried chickens... and WITHOUT Matt Guitar MURPHY
the Jazz version of ‘Wipeout’!
Wow. 👨
Why TF have I never heard of him before?
Watch The Blues Brothers movie... he's one of their 2 guitarists, AND plays Aretha Franklin's husband, a cook in a diner. Great stuff...
@@mikeriesco6174 I know...that's where I saw him, and why I am here. Never heard of him before that.
much CharIie Christian in this ! I sure he knew "night fIight" and other bebop stuff.
Yeah you yes you can I too
Boogie Woogie Blues
He plays so fast
He died in 2018.

They don't need no bass player
True dat. To a point. I didn't actually miss the bass player but I think an upright bass would have added something to the mix to be sure.
da
No effects pedals here
Take a lesson
lol @ the white people at the end
Aint no white boy play like that !
You must not listen to much blues. Color has nothing to do with blues. Check out Stevie Ray Vaughn or Roy Buchanan
@@Rocksider2525 The phrasing just comes out different from white and black. Both are unique and great but its just different.
@@GibbSaw63 Uhhhhh...yeh...thats because blacks and whites have different types of fingers which brings out a different sound.🤥👀
Turn yourself on to some Stevie Ray Vaughan. You may change your tune on that comment. ✌️🎶
