I had the privilege of being paired up with Matt for 9 holes of golf in about 1994 at Shula's Golf Club in Miami, having no idea who he was. It wasn't until after several holes did I learn I was playing with Matt Guitar Murphy from *THE* Blues Brothers. He was so humble and kind ... we had a great round of golf!
Wow, That's pretty damn cool! Would have loved that! Bet you went and watched BB again! Love Matts playin and the Blues Brothers. wish things had turned out different with Belushi. They probably would still have got together now and then. (Him and Dan and the Band)
I ran into Matt at the Coffee Pot in Roanoke VA. In the mid 1980's. He came up and shook my had and asked . . . "Are you staying for the show?" I didn't recognize him and said "Who's playing." "He said me! I'm Matt Guitar Murphy." He was so nice and personable. Wow!!! I realized a legend was asking me if I was going to stick around!!!! I did of course. And to this day treasure that chance meeting of a Blues Brother. God speed Matt! You rocked a 1936 dive bar and I was there to see it!
True students of blues in the USA are so spoilt for real music choice compared to people like me in South Africa. If it wasn't for UA-cam it would never have found great music like this. Bless Matt for their honest sound - very tight - I just love it.
All about heart and SOUL baby! I dont care what instrument you play, If your a musician and dont love this stuff, You need to Re-boot! I've been a lead guitar in several local bands in the 80's 90's We played mostly southern rock and classic rock back then, I love most music on the rock side (Not so much country, Disco,Pop) But there simply would not be any Hard rock like I grew up with and love from the 70's like the VERY under rated Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Nugent, Even ZZ TOP (Which I loved back in the Rio gran Mud and Fandango LIVE days) THIS is what started it all People!
Matt Guitar Murphy, What a sound, Matt can really play that Guitar. I am glad to know he is alive and well and still performing. I hope to see him perform in future concerts.
Matt “Guitar” Murphy: 12/29/1927 - Born in Sunflower, Mississippi, this renowned guitarist began his career in the blues as a member of Howlin’ Wolf’s band in the late 40′s. He would go on to work extensively with Memphis Slim and would also perform and record with Muddy Waters, Etta James, Chuck Berry, Otis Rush, and James Cotton. In 1978 he joined up with The Blues Brothers as lead guitarist and was featured in the classic 1980 comedy based on the band (and the slightly less classic sequel).
Yea, My 3rd time here to HEAR this again, I was amazed at the killer blues leads he did on an acoustic! Going to go check him out right now~! Thanks for the name Paul!

comparing Matt Murphy with Carl Weathers...
I hope that harp player is not someone famous, because for some reason he’s playing a different song in a different key LOL
