    Good solid job. Back in the day, I used to wrap, rivet, & weld sheet metal and then blend it all in with bondo. It wasn't factory perfect by any means, but it would last a long time and pass inspections every year. Thanks for making this video.

    Great video, I enjoyed it! Also, I know it's not a show truck and I don't know crap when it comes to body-work...random question though. What about the very thin gap between the bottom of the edge of the old metal and the top of the fresh metal where the weld is?
    Since it's in a wheel well, surely mud and dirt and moisture is going to fly up and get trapped up in there, no?

    • @11co5955
      @11co5955 3 роки тому +1

      Yea, this isn't the best way to fix it, but it gets the job done. To avoid further rusting from the dirt and moisture that is bound to get up there, you need to spray some undercoating in that gap, as well as spray some fluid film all through there at least once every fall. If you do that religiously, as well as spray your hose in there a few times a year, this patch will easily last the remaining life of the truck

    As good a job as you did, wouldn't it have made more sense for the customer to have gone to a panel shop? Also I really feel for you guys having to deal with rust. I guess I'm lucky that in Australia (at least the part where I live) rust is rarely much of an issue, even on 20 year old cars.

    No this is not car show trophy winning bodywork. But if a guy can keep a shitbox passing inspection until major catastrophic mechanical disintegration.Because the cost of replacement of parts well past wear limits the manufacturers & engineers thought conceivable.And its still operable.Then this is great bodywork for the price.

    Hi Amesie.I just bought a 2002 Ford F150XLT extended cab . I'm going to make one good truck out of the two. Those panels are going to make that part of the job fairly easy for me and it will also be my first stab at this type of work. I have a question. Right in front of the rear bumper and below the tail light, the bottom corner is rusted out (a pretty good hole) A guy mentioned that you can get pre-molded metal pieces that once you cut away the rust, you can slap these on like the panels in the video. Amesie, what are they called exactly? Lastly, where are you located? If you're not too far away, maybe I just bring you the work. Thanks.

  • @Bray91
    @Bray91 7 років тому +1

    How come when you traced the new panel onto the box of the truck you just removed where the rust was and welded the whole panel over the existing box side? Why not just cut it all out to fit the whole new panel? Isn't that going to make the body work more difficult when trying to hide where you welded? Asking because ill be tackling the same job soon.

    • @andrewstevens9246
      @andrewstevens9246 7 років тому +1

      Bray91 he traced it to know where he would have to soft brush down to the bare metal so when he welds the new panel on the paint won't contaminant the weld bead. And also, he left the metal on to make the new panel strong since there is no inner structure behind the panel, assuming it rusted out just like the wheel wells.

      We did something like that years ago on a car. However, due to the cold winters here, the metals tend to expand and contract at different rates. Eventually, we started to see the rivets under the paint and next the seams started to show. I'd recommend spot welding it.

      @jfknospe1 7 років тому

      I had one side done on an F350. It cost about $2500. It included the outer and inner fender rust repair, matched paint, replacement "FX4" sticker and body trim. Parts and paint was just over $500, the rest was labor. In my case, the truck was worth it, since it was the only rust area and it brought the value up and looked like new again.

      Certified Toyota Autobody Repair Tech. I work with insurance companies and if it is customer pay we do it the proper way, it is a lot faster to replace the whole panel dude.

      I'm just a tech broh, I do what the boss tells me. In this case it was what you see here.
      Just the piano player in the whorehouse, I play what I'm told.
      What do you think the cost of a whole bedside for that truck is vs the patch panel. Is one even still available?

      Amesie's Automotive Corner it may seem faster but in the real world on a truck like that a boxside from the dealer is about $700 an aftermarket is about $500 to do a box side u get prolly about 13 hrs labor time plus an inner which is another $100 and another 1.5 hrs so call it 15 hrs at even $50 per hr so that $750 + 700 +100= $1550 plus paint time and paint and material so ur lookin at $2000 or a patch panel for $50 and 8hrs labor plus inner I don't need to do the math it's much cheaper not the right repair but it's a good bandaid most of my customers opt for paint fender flares but that's an even worse bandaid if ur goin to do these I recommend buying a flange tool to over lap the weld butt welding is great when it works but can be a pain honestly this guy could have done a great job with a flange tool and spreading out his weld more for heat
