As a resident of the center of the Western world-Bree, I have a major announcement!
The Prancing Pony is now serving Farmer Maggots famous mushrooms on a fresh baked loaf with venison strips and a delicious draft of their magical beer. I give this new offering four stars ⭐️!

By the way, that explains why Merry knew to order a pint at the Prancing Pony: his people lived near the borders of the Shire, and some of them visited Bree on occasion.

"You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours - closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo." -- Merry, A Conspiracy Unmasked

  • @lisboah

Frodo brought the Ring from the Shire to Mount Doom; Sam accompanied Frodo and stabbed Shelob, greatest of Ungoliant's offspring; Pippin became a Guard of the Citadel, and killed an Olog-Hai by himself in the final battle; and Merry became a knight of Rohan and wounded the Witch-King.
They might have looked like children, but their deeds were legendary.

One minor detail: since Merry was the oldest of the Hobbits save Frodo, he, as himself put it "I put my time [in Rivendell] to better use" and while he said only enough at the time when Elrond was deliberating (and remember, in the book it was after the main discussion) to get invited along to go, he not only got a fair idea of some of the areas they would have to travel through, he gave himself a crash course in Middle earth cartography, and knew where they were in Rohan and was able to guide himself and Pippen toward the most likely places they might find help and certainly fresh water.
Being that he was the adult son of a great house, it gave him a better idea of how to conduct himself with other high status adults and he had an education in how to lead others and run a small county/ large household.
The quote was from TTT, Treebeard chapter IIRC.

@Marie Roberts Yes. Sam was born in 1380, which stuck out to me when I realized that was the same year Frodo's parents died. Merry was born two years later.
Merry can come across as older though, so it's an easy mistake to make. And it makes sense that it's Merry who is the one who studied all those maps while at Rivendell, given how quickly the Old Forest, on his own border, threw them all for a loop. He's the kind who likes to be prepared, and after the Old Forest, which he thought he was prepared to handle, he'd really want to make sure he knew as much about any lands they might possibly come across as he could.

One of the few changes to the storyline that the movies made which I actually like was Merry knowing that Dernhelm was actually Eowyn right from the start. In The Scouring, while it's Pippin who brings the Took army, Merry is the one giving the orders. "Merry laid his plans quickly" the text says, when it becomes obvious the ruffians had no one among them who understood warfare. Thus my conclusion: Pippin, while a great captain and champion, is just that. It is Merry who is the commanding general who leads from the front lines. It was his strategems that helped win the Battle of Bywater.

    • @AugustusR
      @AugustusR 2 роки тому +4

Very Medieval of Tolkien eh? A lord in command of strategy (the heir of theThain) but with a more junior noble in charge of tactics (the son of the Master of Buckland). It suits them well I say, for the Tooks lead the Hobbits from the very heartland of the Shire, while the Masters of Buckland are more akin to marcher lords in the very edges of their homeland. Quite appropriately too he was made esquire in Rohan, a marcher realm of sorts for Gondor. Got to love how the old professor weaved his themes with such subtlety and foresight.

Pity filled his heart and great wonder, and suddenly the slow-kindled courage of his race awoke. He clenched his hand. She should not die, so fair, so desperate! Much of the Nazguls' power came from being able to instill fear into men including women (but probably not elves, or high elves). Their mere presence was enough. My belief is this power is greater when focused on their adversary. The witch king probably did note Dernhelm with a halfling, though his primary focus was on Theoden. Hence WK paid no heed to Merry. Also, Merry wanted to stand with Eowyn more than his fear of death. Eowyn at this point was beyond fear after being rejected by Aragorn (to ride with him), and then seeing Theoden possibly slain.

Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took and Frodo Baggins all played key roles in The LOTR, but Samwise "The Brave" Gamgee must go down as The Best Of All Hobbits. "Without Sam, Frodo wouldn't have got far" were true and fair words spoken by his friend and "master" Frodo Baggins. And he should know. Plus all he did after The Scouring Of The Shire. But Meriadoc Brandybuck certainly played his rather large part in the story, and played it very, very well.

It is always interesting how the Shire political structure changed in the aftermath of the War of the Ring.
First the three-way power split between the Thain, Master, and Mayor will expand to include the residents of Bag-End and Sam's daughter's line in the Tower Hills.
Second, it seems that all sides of the Baggins family, members of the gentry with marriages into both the Took and Brandybuck aristocracy and the more wealthy Sackville-Baggins cousins, are no more, but instead are replaced and surpassed by the nouvaeu riche Gamgees, who actually by dent of Sam's long standing as Mayor, his friendships with the Thain, Master, and King, and his daughter both marrying a Took and becoming the first generation to establish holdings in the Tower Hills, also join the ranks of the aristocracy, doubling the size of that class in a single generation.

Merry is honestly my 2nd fav of the Hobbits, and I love his story-line best, with his 'bromance' of a sorts with Eowyn and with Theoden honestly my favourite bonds in LOTR. Frankly, Merry was the worst done by PJ, as he went from a wise and charismatic Hobbit to a buffoon. For this reason and a few others, I'd like to see a new adaptation of LOTR, at some point in the future to compensate for this insult against Merry.
Hope you don't mind my passionate defence of Merry, he's just such an ill-done by character just as Sam was poorly treated by Bakshi.
Best scene of Merry was the death of Theoden and that of the Witch-King.

It's quite in between the lines, as much else with Tolkien's written works. It's implied here, insinuated there, and implicated all over. The idea is not to have the character clearcut, but defined in your own imagination based on what you get to know - the rest you figure out own your own. It's just Tolkien's style.

Excellent video! After watching this video, its sad that the movie didnt really portray Merry properly. In the movies, he's never made to be this wise and resourceful. Excellent work!

This is one of the changes that they made in the movie which erred one of the most vital characters in the story. The Holdwine that would be there for you even when he is unasked or pushed away.

Please start speaking out against The Rings Of Power. You have a lot of sway with people who are true Tolkien fans. What is happening with Amazon is clearly a bastardization of what Tolkien had in mind. I love your channel and I know you have the power to keep those on the right track. Be a Gandalf in these seriously tumultuous times in the world of Arda.

He is entitled to his opinion whether its good or bad on the show. I just hope he didn't take the England trip to go see Annatar (show runner) and his gifts (free shit from amazon) like so many other Tolkien youtubers have. So sick of access journalism/influencers and their high praise of really bad shit because they took the money/free shit.

Merry is definitely better than Pippin. Pippin is a buffoon who always gets the Fellowship in trouble

No, without Pippin no good end possible because all his ''mistakes'' had a great sens in the story and helped to the good end. I am almost arrived to the conclusion that he is the true secret hero of the story.

@@daniellefaure9817 hm. Interesting I see your point. In other words some of those "mistakes" might have been in a roundabout way helpful to the quest to destroy the Ring. Sauron thinks Pippin is Frodo, for example. They are certainly great in a storytelling way.
