      That's very much Tolkein's point in the story.
      That it was only because of Gollum that the ring was destroyed. That Frodo and Sam would never have survived without him.
      That, therefore, when Bilbo almost killed Gollum all those decades before in the dark of a cave under the misty mountains, but didn't because he felt a moment of pity; that that random act of pity turned out to actually have saved the entire world.

    "What if?" situation that's been worming it's way through my head the last couple weeks: what happens if Gandalf doesn't fall with the Balrog and he survives Moria with the rest of the Fellowship? Does the fellowship still split up? Is Gandalf able to intervene before Boromir tries to take the ring, is he able to prevent Merry/Pippin from getting captured? How involved is Rohan without Gandalf there (or not powerful enough) to free Theoden from Saruman? Can Sauron be defeated if Gandalf is "only" Gandalf the Grey and never becomes Gandalf the White? Is he somehow able to become Gandalf the White Does the balrog presumably surviving the fall affect the repopulation of Moria later on? Did Gandalf *know* that he had to die fighting the Balrog in order for Sauron to be defeated?
    Just some fun things to think about, that single moment is so pivotal, the whip missing his leg changes the entire story!

    My favourite quote from Gandalf is from his conversation with Frodo in Moria:
    “I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
    "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
    As we are currently facing dark times, I feel this quote is very relevant. Some times dark times happen upon us, but we must all make the best of the situation. Stay safe everyone, wherever you are! And remember that the dark times will pass.

    • @beatleblev
      @beatleblev 3 роки тому +3

      In the instance you are referring to, Gandalf is contrasting the fire he wields, the Secret Fire of Eru Ilúvatar (i.e. The Fire of Creation) and the flame of Anar (the Sun) against the dark fire of the Balrog, or as Gandalf phrases it, "Flame of Udún" in other words, the flame of Utunmo, Morgoth's first fortress in the north of Middle Earth. Gandalf is announcing himself to the Balrog, who probably now knows the nature of, if not who specifically, is challenging him. The 'flame of Anar," may be a reference to Narya, the Ring of Fire, or to the Sun, which is driven by the only maia of fire that did not follow Melkor, Arien, tender of the tree of Laurelin, one of the Two Trees now lost to Arda.

Bard killed Smaug with his "Black Arrow" forged years before in the smithies of Erebor.
      Have you ever read "The Quest For Erebor" in the Unfinished Tales? Gandalf told Thorin, who would not bring Bilbo on his quest, "that if you take this hobbit with you you will succeed, but if you don't you will fail. A foresight is upon me Thorin Oakenshield."
