I had a look and yes all the maps are lovely, but I was hoping there would be a map of middle earth. I didn't expect the maps to be more factual and presumed with a name like "Lord of maps" it would have a middle earth map, but my hopes were a wee bit dashed... and yet they could make so much money. :/

The Moria sequence in LOTR Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, is my favourite chapter in the whole trilogy. I took my kids to see it back in 2001 - they were blown away. Well done Peter and the hundreds of artisans who created the Moria props, characters and scenery. They truly multiplied the vision of JRR Tolkien. Oh, and the Orthanc confrontation between Gandalf & Saruman was brilliant too.
Yup. It is especially strong if you know the backstory of it all. To your average watcher, it is just a badass line. But when you know who is Gimli, from what dwarven line, and what Moria is - it really amplifies the sentence. Khazad-dum is a dwarven kingdom as long as there is one dwarf alive in it, no matter how many enemies he faces - as it is their first and the greatest kingdom, created by literally the first dwarf to ever live. It is like Jerusalem for all three major Abrahamic religions, but to the n-th degree.
There are zero good lines in any of Peter Whoever's movies. They just suck, exactly as Christopher Tolkien said. They capture nothing of what Moria was and what dwarves represented in general. I am ashamed that I've even watched 1+3/4 of them, as I can't bear to watch the rest.
Thorin Oakenshield would have been so proud to have at least seen a glimpse of Khazad-dum. His final sacrifice at Erebor was only the precursor to a catalyst of events that would lead to the defeat of Sauron and the eventual liberation of Khazad-dum from all the corruption.

A good friend of mine asked me why Dwarves and and Elves didn't like each other and I could only think of the Fall of Doriath because of Nauglamír and the Dwaves being dishonest with their brethren. That was the original reason, right? What else do we got?
@@Omnilatent Dwarves were not originally part of the plan. AULË created them. The elves and dwarves have different values as well. I can only ever making friendship because they both likes crafting, well at least the noldor elves. They both benefited from it. Oh and they hunt petty dwarfs to extinction lol
This seriously makes me wish Tolkien had written more on the Dwarves. They have to be one of my favorite races in Middle Earth, and yet compared to what we know about the histories of elves and Men, its not much.

He probably went to see if he could find traces or signs of the balrog. The future king is laying out the land and seeing who’s a threat. A true king looking out for his people
I think, perhaps, Aragorn entered Moria to search for Gollum. Well that's only my opinion. It is in the books that Aragorn was on a quest to search for Gollum, where he only found and captured it in Mirkwood.

This reminds me why the Mines of Moria was the Lord of the Rings Online 1st major expansion. I saw the dead Balrog at the top and found Gandalf's hat at the bottom. The map rendered in this video is quite impressive and 'does' dwarf the actual areas available to the player.
The Fellowship of the ring gave it justice in my opinion. And i have been in Love with dwarves ever since, through Warcraft and Tolkien lore. I would absolutely kill for a TV series or an RPG about dwarves. For Durin! 💪🏻
@@UrbanKovac I feel like the movies haven't done dwarves enough justice. Yes, the Hobbit shows them in an impressive light but I still feel like there's so much left out of this mighty race of Durins folk that literally built giant cities with their own hands.

I think being in the Lurray Caverns was the most profound experience I've had. Walking through a cave system is like being hugged by the world. There's this dead silent calm, it's serene.
As a total Lore Nerd, nothing compares in my mind to LOTR. I cannot put into words how much admiration I have for the time and effort Tolkien put into world building. And I truly appreciate the effort your channel (and many others) has put into covering all of it.
Loath to say, but I can't get enough of Tolkien's stories about great tragedies of Middle-earth. The destruction of Beleriand, the Sundering of Numenor, fall of Arnor, decline of Gondor, Dwarves losing their realms - all of this makes LOTR lore *so much* more heartbeaking and interesting. And as always, your continuous effort to compound the history of LOTR from different appendixes and story bits into one single source is greatly appreciated, Nerd of the Rings :)
When I first heard Durin's song, I imagined Durin as being perhaps a few centuries in the past relative to The Hobbit, or LoTR. Knowing just how ancient he is, it really makes him, and in turn this song, so much more powerful of an idea.

The poem of Moria is one of the many reasons I adore Tolkien so much. The beauty, mystery, and majesty he was able to convey through his words was just astounding. He’s the only writer that’s been able to bring me to tears (and on several occasions).

The two chapters covering Moria-A Journey in the Dark and The Bridge of Khazad-dûm-are so amazingly written, so brilliant in their build up and execution that they're not only among the best in the entire book, but among the finest chapters I've ever read. Every detail is so carefully considered, even down to the omonotopoeia of the drums: Doom, doom, doom. It's no coincidental choice, but rather a brilliant portend that echoes as Gandalf falls. Doom, doom, doom...

I always feel so sad about Balin's ultimate end, I wish Tolkien gave his story a happier ending, maybe its because I now have a face attached to Balin from the Hobbit movies? @@isaackim7675 Though it stirs sorrow, it's this deep and true feeling it makes you mourn his loss and what may have been, that is what MAKES this moment. This character, really can only resound such a wounding note, having struck short someone cared for. Changing it for them all to meet up and be pals after wouldn't have the grand and authentic feel of the books. That's why I feel one of the best details is how Frodo will never be all better again. A part of him has broken from his tasks as ringbearer. So he has to travel with the Elves and Gandalf to the Grey Havens, into the west.
It also shows real life, that not every story has a happy ending. Whether it is Balin meeting his end in Moria, or Boromir succumbing to the temptation of the One Ring and then dying heroically defending Merry and Pippin, or Denethor going crazy after thinking he lost both of his son's and burning himself alive, or Frodo being seriously hurt by the Nazgul blade, sometimes things happen which we wish wouldn't happen. It is sad, but it's why it is so powerful. Like you guys said, we get attached to the characters, and we mourn their loss when they die unexpectedly or tragically (or, in some cases, heroically).
This is why I only play Dwarves in World of Warcraft. Such a great mystical race. Powerful beyond measure. Thanks for this as I am addicted to these as I am to Tolkiens series.
the tale of Durin that Gimli reprises still sits deep in my memory, and shall so forevermore. it is, in my miind, the best verse ever created in any Lord of the Rings story ever written by Tolkien himself.

Oh how I love these stories and history of middle earth. It's amazing how Tolkien imagined it so thoroughly that it's like real ancient history. I just never tire of it.
If they're ever going to make a TV series, I'd love for them to make an epic saga of the Awakening of Durin the First all the way to the Dwarves creating Khazad-dûm throughout all the ages. They'd never have to worry about actors and actresses getting fed up and wanting to leave because it would span generations so each series would focus on the various ages. Thanks again for all your work on putting these videos together.
That's what I'm saying. So you haven't heard Amazon Prime Video's LOTR series. They acquired the right to do the show. And the very first episode is The Rings of Power. Premiering September 2022. And we just hope that the backstories of the main characters and others too as well as the places, the kingdom, etc will be shown episode per episode, the prequels, and genesis. Ohhhh I want to watch again the LOTR trilogy. I will start this week.

I love Dwarven lore so much, but one thing still eludes me after all these years. If Durin's Bane was active around the city, enough to be spotted from outside by Dain Ironfoot, why exactly did it go unnoticed for 5 years during Balin's reign?
He probably went to the lower levels and rest until the war between the Dwarves and Orcs/Goblins awake him again, also since Moria is huge, probably Balin considered that zone(and others) too deep and risky without calling more people to investigated

I was playing a game on my mobile whilst watching this but ended up not taking my eye off of my monitor, the art was lovely and the story fascinating. It is interesting to see the differences and similarities between LOTRO's map of moria and this map of moria. I'm interested in how the lore informs both maps.
An excellent summary, tying together events that had remained incoherent to me before. Thank you. One thing I've always wondered: Given the enormous volume of halls and chambers, stairways and mine workings, what did the Dwarves do with all the spoil? There should have been enough waste rock and earth to build huge hills, almost mountains in themselves, before the East and West portals.
I wonder if they threw most of the spoil down that great crack they had. The rest probably out secondary routes in mountains they probably raised the level of mountain in places.

This reminds me why the Mines of Moria was the Lord of the Rings Online 1st major expansion. I saw the dead Balrog at the top and found Gandalf's hat at the bottom. The map rendered in this video is quite impressive and 'does' dwarf the actual areas available to the player.
Moria was one of the best part of movies. So glad you did a video on this.
The Fellowship of the ring gave it justice in my opinion. And i have been in Love with dwarves ever since, through Warcraft and Tolkien lore.
I would absolutely kill for a TV series or an RPG about dwarves.

@@UrbanKovac I feel like the movies haven't done dwarves enough justice. Yes, the Hobbit shows them in an impressive light but I still feel like there's so much left out of this mighty race of Durins folk that literally built giant cities with their own hands.

@@UrbanKovac Same. Tolkien, Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls (Even though they were Elves). I've this obsession with carved stone cities in the deep places. I think being in the Lurray Caverns was the most profound experience I've had. Walking through a cave system is like being hugged by the world. There's this dead silent calm, it's serene.

As a total Lore Nerd, nothing compares in my mind to LOTR. I cannot put into words how much admiration I have for the time and effort Tolkien put into world building. And I truly appreciate the effort your channel (and many others) has put into covering all of it.
Loath to say, but I can't get enough of Tolkien's stories about great tragedies of Middle-earth. The destruction of Beleriand, the Sundering of Numenor, fall of Arnor, decline of Gondor, Dwarves losing their realms - all of this makes LOTR lore *so much* more heartbeaking and interesting.
And as always, your continuous effort to compound the history of LOTR from different appendixes and story bits into one single source is greatly appreciated, Nerd of the Rings :)
When I first heard Durin's song, I imagined Durin as being perhaps a few centuries in the past relative to The Hobbit, or LoTR. Knowing just how ancient he is, it really makes him, and in turn this song, so much more powerful of an idea.
This song has been written much later, after Durin's Bane forced the dwarves out of Khazad dum.
I always find it funny that the 'speak friend and enter' "riddle" actually serves the same purpose as a 'push' sign

The poem of Moria is one of the many reasons I adore Tolkien so much. The beauty, mystery, and majesty he was able to convey through his words was just astounding. He’s the only writer that’s been able to bring me to tears (and on several occasions).

The two chapters covering Moria-A Journey in the Dark and The Bridge of Khazad-dûm-are so amazingly written, so brilliant in their build up and execution that they're not only among the best in the entire book, but among the finest chapters I've ever read. Every detail is so carefully considered, even down to the omonotopoeia of the drums: Doom, doom, doom. It's no coincidental choice, but rather a brilliant portend that echoes as Gandalf falls. Doom, doom, doom...

I always feel so sad about Balin's ultimate end, I wish Tolkien gave his story a happier ending, maybe its because I now have a face attached to Balin from the Hobbit movies? @@isaackim7675 Though it stirs sorrow, it's this deep and true feeling it makes you mourn his loss and what may have been, that is what MAKES this moment. This character, really can only resound such a wounding note, having struck short someone cared for. Changing it for them all to meet up and be pals after wouldn't have the grand and authentic feel of the books. That's why I feel one of the best details is how Frodo will never be all better again. A part of him has broken from his tasks as ringbearer. So he has to travel with the Elves and Gandalf to the Grey Havens, into the west.
It also shows real life, that not every story has a happy ending. Whether it is Balin meeting his end in Moria, or Boromir succumbing to the temptation of the One Ring and then dying heroically defending Merry and Pippin, or Denethor going crazy after thinking he lost both of his son's and burning himself alive, or Frodo being seriously hurt by the Nazgul blade, sometimes things happen which we wish wouldn't happen.
It is sad, but it's why it is so powerful. Like you guys said, we get attached to the characters, and we mourn their loss when they die unexpectedly or tragically (or, in some cases, heroically).
This is why I only play Dwarves in World of Warcraft. Such a great mystical race. Powerful beyond measure. Thanks for this as I am addicted to these as I am to Tolkiens series.

Oh how I love these stories and history of middle earth. It's amazing how Tolkien imagined it so thoroughly that it's like real ancient history. I just never tire of it.
If they're ever going to make a TV series, I'd love for them to make an epic saga of the Awakening of Durin the First all the way to the Dwarves creating Khazad-dûm throughout all the ages. They'd never have to worry about actors and actresses getting fed up and wanting to leave because it would span generations so each series would focus on the various ages.

That's what I'm saying. So you haven't heard Amazon Prime Video's LOTR series. They acquired the right to do the show. And the very first episode is The Rings of Power. Premiering September 2022.
And we just hope that the backstories of the main characters and others too as well as the places, the kingdom, etc will be shown episode per episode, the prequels, and genesis. Ohhhh I want to watch again the LOTR trilogy. I will start this week.

I love Dwarven lore so much, but one thing still eludes me after all these years. If Durin's Bane was active around the city, enough to be spotted from outside by Dain Ironfoot, why exactly did it go unnoticed for 5 years during Balin's reign?

I was playing a game on my mobile whilst watching this but ended up not taking my eye off of my monitor, the art was lovely and the story fascinating. It has been many years since I read any Tolkien but discovering your videos has inspired me to go through them again. *Edit I have just read some comments here and realised that you recorded the poem etc yourself! I assumed it was from an official recording. Extra kudos to you for your accents.
Amazing video yet agian. I love it when you make videos on dwarves. They're literally so underrated and not much is said about them compared to other species introduced by Tolkien. Khazad-dum is such a maginficent place, more than I had imagined while reading the books, your visuals are stunning and the way you create imagery with your words is absolutely breathtaking. The performance of Gimli's poem in the BBC radio dramatisation of LoTR is something special. Even in its abridged form.
In Roman-Latin Dom means Mansion as well. „Domus“. In German & Polish it is still used as a word. Sounds similar to Dûm
it's used in south slavic too
Dom is house/home in east slavic too

One thing I've always wondered: Given the enormous volume of halls and chambers, stairways and mine workings, what did the Dwarves do with all the spoil? There should have been enough waste rock and earth to build huge hills, almost mountains in themselves, before the East and West portals.
I wonder if they threw most of the spoil down that great crack they had. The rest probably out secondary routes in mountains they probably raised the level of mountain in places.
