I love you guys’ work flow. I got hired last week at a local company and every work day is hectic bc i work with a guy who has me do everything except roll which I understand. I know im learning but i think he just wanted someone to do everything for him. I get it. I want to learn as much as i can and then quit and subcontract for someone else. He also skips steps like acid etching or washing concrete. He also doesn’t add primers.
Acid isn't always a must but primer is.
Honestly Homedepot has a Great Epoxy and Colors ..and yes we grind the concrete floor prior havent had any complaints
Are you using the Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield?
Bravo for preparation. You are one of the few people that shows diamond grinding as preparation. Great job installing the prime coat also. That looks like a very durable floor. you did a great job
Thank you!
@@MikeDayConcrete what epoxy coating did you use before the clear coat? Can you recommend the products?
What company makes the material you used for this project and if it’s a new garage that was poured less than a year ago, do I still have to grind or can I just drop an etch liquid?
Hi Mike, Do you recommend grinding the garage floor in a brand new house? Thinking of epoxying the floor before moving in.
I installed a kit from Lowes, didn't do any of this grinding or prep, and its been nice and shiny for going on 5 years now
Mike following for 1 year and i wanted learn how to epoxy coating on concrete n i see you daylie foing videos pouring concrete cux i do concrete n im just proud ur my teacher again glad see u have 1 mil more views on this video love your worlds n help thanks you
How do you walk on it while working without leaving footprints everywhere? Lovely job you've done👍

If you play some grass-based sport you're in luck, I suppose.
Mike, you’re a pro, I appreciate your expertise and help in your videos. Thanks! Much success!
Thank you!
I resurfaced concerte first. Used etching. Then primer, then epoxy, then sealer. Works great.
Thank you Mike! will start doing my new built 370sq ft garage floor this afternoon...
Great video! Glad to see a pro doing it right. I’m a contractor and a customer asked me to do epoxy on a storefront floor... never again will I mess with it. We used that rustoleum stuff and it was absolutely horrible. We diamond grinded, etched, cleaned and followed all directions. They offer a guarantee but I sent the pictures and they wouldn’t respond. Took twice as much product to finish the job over $700 in kits plus machine rentals. Would have been better to hire pros like yourselves
I run into that a lot. People trying it themselves without really knowing just how or what needs to be done. That's why I made the course.
hi mike, i recently completely bullshitted my way into a construction job and i've been watching your videos to learn everything because i literally had no prior experience. well i've been promoted twice now 😂 so thanks for helping me fake it 'till i make it

I was going to epoxy my basement floor. However, after watching this I have decided not to. I can't risk doing it wrong the first time- financially or emotionally. I appreciate you for showing me the real problem I'd have gotten myself onto. Thank you immensely! I'll just save up and get it done professionally. 👍

That’s a suweet lookin floor! Never worked with epoxy floor coverings but I’m gonna go ‘out on a limb’ here and bet that the secret to a nice looking epoxy floor that lasts is probably gonna be the prep work? Almost true with anything really. Prep, prep then prep again.
🤜🤛
Yes, the prep work is really important. That's why most homeowner diy epoxy floors fail. They're told to just acid etch then apply the big box epoxy. As soon as they drive on it with hot tires the epoxy peels right off under the tire. I grind all my floors before we do our epoxy floors. Never had one fail yet.
Mike Day Everything About Concrete 🤥
You guys always make it look easy……like the squeegee…I am sure getting that spread evenly is very difficult. Get it on uneven and then what. Prep looks tedious…and very important. You guys excel at everything I watch you do.
Can you mention the brands you are using in this video? Thanks in advance. The video was very knowledgeable
Its good to know what kind of prep it takes to do the job right, im mainly going to use my garage for storage and maintenance work on the cars, I think i will be fine with the cheaper stuff, also since i dont plan on living here forever
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge, gonna do this in the spring.
Thanks Bill. Are you a subscriber to the channel yet?
I would love 2 have a business like this, its so relaxing to watch, and do.
Costs around 100 grand for all the gear plus a van and trailer to carry it in, after that it’s cost of materials, once the first jobs done it’s all maintaining gear like rollers and grind wheels and such. Cost of material will be paid off first job, it’s basically floating the product to the customer until they pay. After that it all pays for itself as long as you do good work
Some schooling required but it’s nothing compared to other trades
And believe me it's back breaking at first days don't give up
I'm glad I seen this video, I bought some 1prt epoxy paint and some clear epoxy from the big box stores, I wasn't even going to use bonding primer lol thanks for the tips
I subscribed after watching this video, and another before this. Thank you for the quality info. Always great to see someone who takes pride in their work. 👍
Professional job, detailed to a high standard, thanks for sharing.

Question if you put on your driveway how long it last south texas heat
Great stuff! If you're dealing with new construction, will the floor still need to be prepped or will it be good to go?
Great question, would love to hear the answer to this as well.
Yes it will need to be prepped. The purpose for grinding is opening up the pores of the concrete to create a surface that the product can grab and bind to. Even newly poured concrete will dry in a way that will not be ideal to bond to whatever product is being applied. Hope this helped!
Yes, I just had my newly-built home done and they still needed to grind the concrete. Not to mention, for a new slab it was already dirty as the construction crews had stored equipment and even parked in the garage while the home was u see construction.
They put a clear sealer over it, you probably need to grind off
Floor came out awesome, big transformation.
Hey Mike, really great video. My old man used to say "Always enough time to do it over, but never enough time to do it right...just do it right the first time" What do you think of the rustoleum epoxy kit?
I've never used it myself, but if it's not 100% solids forget it.
@@MikeDayConcrete I just bought one of those Rustoleum kits but after watching your video, I think I'll return it. I'm not hearing great things about them, especially in the coverage area. Some people are saying they need 4 to cover a 2 car garage properly. At $214 a pop at Lowe's, might as well just hire a pro or go your route. I would like to try it myself still, so I think I'll just take your advice. Just need some of those fancy shoes you guys have on lol.
@@tylerrue3108 We did our shop floor at work with the Rustoleum ten years ago. Worked great and has held up very well. There are a couple of areas right under the lift that have been cleaned 100 times with solvents and we've got maybe three dime sized areas that basically just wore through that showed up when I pressure washed it. I've spilled every automotive fluid out there on it, dragged forklift forks across it, and generally just used it, and it has held up great. Using brake cleaner on it is the only thing I've found that actually damages it, so don't do that.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. Very helpful!
Love this, I'd like to do this as a business.. how do you decide your price that you charge? Also I'm going to buy your course

SIKA EPOXY IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST GRADE EPOXY. if your spending the money to get epoxy flooring done, get the right stuff. No shade to the creator of the video, if the epoxy is done properly with correct mixtures the finished product will last decades if not forever without gaining cracks or breaking chunks free. I have used Sika since I first began epoxy, and my dad did his floor and it remains unscathed for 20 years and counting
I hope this comment was helpful! The application was correct just the grade of epoxy was low or maybe the mixtures and times for them were incorrect
Geez guys you make it look so easy! I'm going to attempt it in my wife's garage (attached with in floor heat) before I do mine!! I'll do it this early summer, got to remove all her "stuff" in they'a beforehand. We built the house w/attached 2 car garage in 2015. Floor is in good shape with no cracks.. so after watching you guys here I think I can manage it. I'm up in Orrington not wicked far from ya! What do you recommend for the base coat and topcoat brands? I don't want to waste my money on Home Dump cheap products. I'd like to do a full flake broadcast and then the topcoat to seal her up. Look forward to your response and again thanks for the wicked awesome videos! Oh, I am at work in the Arctic circle watching your UA-cam channel! Cheers!.. fellow Maniac!
I do epoxy floors too for a living in central Ontario good video. I do a lot of concrete repair and outdoor one part epoxy with anti-slip grit. Keep up the great work!!!
For concrete with some mild surface damage how do you repair?
I couldn't fund the link to what kind of Epoxy you used? Thanks

That's a FANTASTIC tutorial step-by-step, Thank You! Now I need to get some spiked shoes!
How much do you charge in your area for a 750 sqft garage for the job advertised? Looks like a 2-3 days project.
You didn’t link what primer you use… is that something you would share with your viewers?
yup that's how ya do it
Amen Brother!
Great job. Looking forward to doing this on my garage floor.
Makes it brand new again.
Great video!!! Quick question...if I primed after I cleaned and etched but didn't grind the concrete will it still peel?
I got epoxy done for 2 car garage. I wasn’t interested in the very smooth finish because the winter and slips. So I did 2 coats with lots of chips. I realized when guy was done, some area when touched are very rigid while some areas had shiny smooth epoxy. I told him about it and he said this is normal to avoid slipping. Not sure if I got robbed and he’s being lazy. I paid $1650
Ali Ahmad good luck keeping dirt from getting stuck in the rough areas. Sounds like you floor is a bit wavy. There’s a way to do 100% flake coverage, yet not have rough areas. I can’t tell you all the secrets, or I’d be out of a job. 😏
If you’re not in his area, you don’t have the job anyway. Pay it forward. Unless you don’t watch tips from professionals…?
What kind of primer should we be buying ? Is it latex ? A regular wall primer ?
Thanks! You save me from ruining my garage floor.
I run a pressure washing business as well as a handyman business and i just had a guy call me that owns a transmission shop 5 bay and asked me to do this for 2k including materials which sounds crazy to me. Ive never done this before but after watching this i definitely think he is crazy wanting it all done materials and labor for 2k
does your course explain about sqft rates to customers? I can cost anything concrete, but Apoxy know nothing about it. Anyone here bought his course? I'm usually very wary of buying courses, but I trust MIke!
Along with the course you get access to me for help and questions. I'll help any way I can.
It’s extremely slippery when wet. Especially with snow or ice. I’d highly recommend a clear silica sand or colored quartz. (Could save your life) I do epoxy/polyaspartic floors for a living. We have never done a floor without it.
There are some epoxy coatings that offer skid resistant material, depending on the area and what kind of traffic it is receiving.
cool video, I have 3 questions if you or someone would kind to help:
what if garage f'oor is slopped towards a drain? will the epoxy run off the concrete ?
what if you have repaired cracks, does the epoxy hide it all?
what if your concrete is cracked heavily, and/or bucketed towards the the wall do you just use leveling cement and use epoxy?
1. Unless the slope is very steep, the epoxy shouldn't run to the drain. Always tape over the drain though to protect it.
2. The epoxy will hide the repaired cracks, yes.
3. You can repair it with some kind of leveler. Just have to let it cure fully before applying epoxy over it.
what do you think about the H & C kit? does that have everything you need or should you buy something else?
Hey Mike...I’m not seeing where the course you offer is located...Can you please guide me? Thank you
Hello, great video. Our garage has concrete slabs with paint on it. How do I prep the floors for that. Should I still grind the paint off or can I use some other method to remove the paint layer. Thank you
Grinding usually works the best to remove the old paint and prep the concrete for the new epoxy.
Great video. Whats the process for a brand new concrete garage floor in a new house build. Just start with the primer or can the primer step be skipped?
Does the course talk about using a part 1 and part 2?
Type of nap?
Do need the special shoes?
How much to charge?
How long should it take?
Yes, all that and more.
Nice looking floor Mike! I’ve got a 1368 sq/ft garage that I built last summer. The floor is heated. Next winter I’ll be bringing my farm tractor in and it has chains on the rear tires. Would the chains mark the epoxied floor? It hasn’t marked it yet on the bare concrete. Thanks from Kazabazua, Quebec, Canada!
It may. I would broadcast flake into the epoxy for that kind of vehicle. It would make it even more durable.
Mike Day Everything About Concrete Thanks for the reply Mike and keep the videos coming, they’re awesome!
Curious, what do you guys wear on your feet? Great video btw!!
Great Video Sir, my question, I have a 30x 40 garage, the concrete has a vapor barrier and is about 2 months old now (smooth finish) do I still need to do the grinding step on fresh concrete or will an etching type primer do the trick?
For the best long term adhesion, I'd grind it.
Hi, great vid.
Could you please tell me what is the best type of roll to apply the epoxy paint with?
Thank you very much in advance.
Dan
Mike Day Everything About Concrete.. Now I just need you guys to come do my garage floor... That would be awesome!!!
Nice looking floor Mike. What do you typical charge for something like this?
Nice looking job , my garage floor needs a repair 👍
The floor needs a repair or the epoxy that's on the floor?
Hello from Northern Ontario Canada!
After viewing a few of your vids, you are definitely consistent on one issue regarding an epoxy finish on a garage floor - "primer, primer, PRIMER first" - I've been prepping my garage floor for the last week. I hand grinded the old paint off the floor and so the surface is now almost white in color with nice grind lines (not smooth at all). After washing and vacuuming several times, I am confident that the floor is very clean, dust free and ready for an epoxy finish. I was about to lay the epoxy down tomorrow afternoon, but now I want to follow your advise and apply a primer first.
Question ...... What "type" of primer do you recommend? Just any concrete primer or should it be some sort of an epoxy primer?
Thanks!
What is a fair price to prep, seal and
epoxy an average 500sqft garage?
When you said primer I said hahahah I would have went to Home Depot and been the big dummy to not think 💭 about that and I’d be calling about my floor is peeling help…😂 I just watched a video before yours and got inspired. And this was a hey hey hey 🛑 hold on watch this first.
That’s kinda sad though that you’re saying the epoxy you buy from big brand stores Lowe’s/Home Depot just won’t last long lol I think you just crushed half our dreams 😂
Me after buying it from homedepot this past weekend 🥲
We ought to sue Home Depot
I noticed at Home Depot, the Dry Lok is right next to the epoxy stuff … wonder if dry lok would be a good primer
The video made it sound like its because folks don't prep the floors good first though. I've never epoxied floors but i've done a lot of diy spray painting and prep is everything. Even cheap spray paint looks and resist great with good prep.
I've had rustolum epoxy for 8 years in shop from home depot and help up fine with tons of use on floor I'd buy it again in a heart beat
Thanks for the video; nicely done! If someone wants to use the chips, when do those get applied? Do you have to do it as you apply the epoxy or can you apply the epoxy and have time to spread the chips? Thank you!
What is the color of the epoxy grey with green in your old orchard beach video?? Love it!
Mike you’re damn good. I’ve seen your website on concrete installation as well. Nice work. Hats off to you.
Would you recommend washing the floor before grinding or after?
Thanks
Great informative video guys. Might be a silly question but why aren’t you leaving foot prints in the coating.
Bluebagger61 spike shoes or baseball cleats.
Great video. Thank you for all the info!
My pleasure!
I know this was 3 years ago but what does something like that cost to have done vs DIY? Nice video.
I have a floating slab detached garage in Minnesota. I have been told not to epoxy my floor because there is NO vapor barrier underneath. What’s your opinion Mike? Will I get to much moisture from the freeze/ thaw?
No, not necessarily. You can check for moisture by testing the slab. google that. The first primer coating I used on this one will block most any moisture that's coming up through the concrete. If it's excessive (you'd notice that) there's even moisture blocker epoxies for that much moisture also.
You do the moister test. Tape a piece of plastic and leave it overnight, next Day you take it off, if the concrete underneth the plastic..... you good to go
Is that just a normal 7" grinder? What sort of head do you recommend for that? I saw you mention the DiamaBrush for the larger tool; is it the same sort of head for the handheld?
So if you grind the floor first, do you not have to mess with acid etching?
My opinion is that you use acid to ech the concrete to make for better adhesion. Grinding it back to bare is effectively doing this. But if you want a super slick finish you can do both followed by filling any holes or uneven surfaces. Grind again. Vacuum all debris and dust. The seal it
Can you round the corner between the block wall and the concrete floor, then paint the epoxy up on the 1st row or two of a concrete block wall?
Also, where are you guys located? I'm in east Tennessee. I wish I had you guys to do my floors (and walls) at my workshop!!
What filler material would you use to make a radius transition between the floor and the walls?
I bought epoxy 2 years back and then chickened out. Now I’m pulling courage to do it. My question- is there a expiry for epoxy?
It should be still good if you didn't open it and it didn't freeze.
Would it still need to be sanded if it was a brand new garage floor? Thanks for the help, and video
Could you comment on polycuramine? I prepped and then laid down a polycuramine coating in my garage and so far it has lasted 3 years. Tires did pull it up slightly in small spots - didn’t use a clear coat on top but looking back, I should have.
When it’s wet, it’s slippery and dangerous to walk on. I fell hard one afternoon on my wet floor. It sucked. I didn’t add sand to aid in grip.
The poly is less forgiving as you have to get it down and spread out quickly in small sections. You can’t mix it in a bucket or it will get hot and harden in seconds. I had to mix it in its bag, cut it open and pour it out 3x3 foot sections. Needed second person to spread it and cut in edges. Seeing your video, I’d have done the epoxy but avoided epoxy because of the inherent peeling as you mentioned. I don’t know of a pro near me who can handle such a job properly the way you do it. Good video!
I don't know too much about polycuramine coatings other than they go down real thin, probably should plan on 2 coats for a nice even look. I don't buy coatings at any big box stores. The prep is the key to any coating you buy an install yourself. The best way is the way I show you in my video. Using any etching solution simply doesn't do a good enough job in my opinion.
@@MikeDayConcrete You really know what you’re doing. If you were in my neck of woods, I’d have hired you to do it and stayed with epoxy. The poly came up in spots despite my laborious prep work. 👉 A retired painter told me to use a hard wax on tire tracks to help prevent paint peel up. He’s 88 yrs old now. Sub’d & TY
Will give it a try 😅
Thanks, Chief
What kind of shoes do u wear for this ? It doesnt look like it spreads when u step on It
A lot of people use baseball/football cleats to reduce surface area contact.
@@noahscholl8995 yes I was able to figure that out :) thank u very much Noah

I'm wearing spiked shoes, like baseball cleats.
Mike, thank you. Do you have a product list for a garage epoxy? Looking to price out doing my own and subscribing to your course. Thank you
It's in the course
Is that a paint primer that you apply before the epoxy? Or is it some sort of epoxy primer?
Mike, wonderful video, in your course, do you cover handling joints, edges, protrusions and abutments? And it looks like the product that you use is very low VOC, so no filtered respirators ever needed? Even anchoring epoxy in any type of confined space usually makes me nauseous.
No odor to this epoxy. The course covers all you need to know to do what I did in the video.
So you have 3 layers? First layer is a primer, than the epoxy layer, then a polyurethane coating?
Yes.
If its a brand new garage... new construction do you need that diamond grind step or can you go straight to cleaning then priming?
Hi Mike..I just found you here...I had my garage epoxy chipped and it turned out great...(He was a professional ) Patio turned out great stamped...Now he stained and sealed my driveway and I am little bummed with that...Have a feeling it was little hot to seal...But anyway..I haven't used a power washer and been couple months..Should I just use dawn with power washer? He used 3 coats of sealer.
What are my options if my garage floor is susceptible to moisture during winter ?
In terms of durability which one is better the polyurethane paint or epoxy since you mentioned that you used polyurethane as a top coat
Urethane is more chemical resistant, UV resistant, and Scratch resistant than epoxy. That's why we use it as a top coat.
Can you do one of those epoxy floors with embedded pebbles, car dealership style?
Hey Mike! Thanks for that video. But how can I join your course.. I really need to learn that. I want to be a pro like you
3:20 How do you manage to step all over the floor coating you just poured without leaving footprints on the rest of the garage?

Is ambient temperature a factor? Just moved to Montana and I wanna get this done in my garage. Wondering if I should just wait until it warms back up. Great video, very informative.
It is yes, polyaspartics will cure at much lower temperatures than epoxies will. Check out epoxy2u.com for their polyaspartic and I would use that.
Thank you for the video, what is the cost for a 2 car garage? The floor is in very good shape, Thank you
