    Ok, I just purchased the SL1200 MKII from my local record shop, SUPER clean, near mint! He knows the original owner and the deck has only been used to beat match EDM. The record shop owner also is a service technician so if i should need any repairs or re-calibration he can do it! Now for the best part, I paid, wait for it, $325!! no kidding! Gimbal is solid, no play in the bearings, pitch slider is clean, VTA and anti skate all perfect, no movement in the switch housings, tone arm is perfectly balanced, strobes, pop up all working fine, no issues with the motor, dots stay as they should at zero and there is no wobble or flutter when bringing pitch up or down, stays locked in as it should. This particular 1200 was born April 1998.

    Really useful video. Just took mine apart to clean them for the first time ever in over 20 years. Weren't that dirty but calibration was out on one deck. Managed to get it back to normal from your instructions so thanks.

    so good man, thank you!! I just bought an old 1200 which has been sitting in a houseboat. there are some signs of corrosion on the platter (green mold) but the inside look clean!
    this video has been very helpful to fix a small break issue, thank you!! the height of the tonearm is stuck but i don't want to take it apart, will try to put some wd40 and let it sit so see if it loosens...

    Thanks for the video, I'm going to be purchasing a Sl1200 MKII from my local record shop owner and this helped me out to know how to clean it and get it looking pretty again. Also @16:37 I'm certain that main board had been removed and or serviced at some point, it's missing the white zip ties that hold the wires in place. I'll be checking out more of your videos.

    bro thank you and everyone like you for posting videos like this. TOO AWESOME.
    i have a mkII myself and i might have to open her up and give her a nice clean. the guy i bought it off of said he cleaned it himself before giving it to me, calibrated the pitch and everything, but the unfortunate facts are that 1) i smoked a lot of cigarettes and bud in the same room as it in the 4 years i've owned it and 2) i used a physically damaged headshell that may have potentially ruined but definitely damaged/misaligned the headshell collar on the end of the tonearm. :| very annoying problem to have from what i can tell, cuz i have to do a shit ton of work just to get to TWO SCREWS on the underside of the tonearm... argh.

    You haven’t seen dirty. I bought a pair of a guy the other side of the country. He said he would deliver them for 70£. Drive 3 hours. I was like ok. Long story short. Both pitch controls shot. Oil and dirt and gunk on both. Smashed feet. Dust covers cracked. Platters covered in glue or something. Fault on one deck. Just awful. Took a week stripping down and new genuine parts fitted. They look like new now. Can’t believe the price these go for and are treated like shit

    @38:00 you don’t have to remove the platter
    You can work directly using one of the holes.
    And use a plastic screw driver to avoid shorten something inside. Or just wrap the crew driver with tape to isolate the screw driver

    Hey Derek great video, my 1200mk2 is running slow what do you think it might be? I don't think the pitch slider is doing anything either?

    • @DerekJonesdereksmokinjones
      @DerekJonesdereksmokinjones  3 роки тому

      First I would try recalibration of the pitch. Also check the spindle to make sure it's properly labeled 🏷.
      Otherwise you may need to replace the drive moter. I have found on some boards that had speed adjustment like on Stanton turntables. But its hard to say what you issues could be without seeing it 😕

  • @scratchback2001
    @scratchback2001 2 роки тому

    Just a heads up. Why is your pitch control running in reverse? If you pull the pitch control towards you, it should speed up, not slow down. I have a brand new 1200 and it, like every other deck I've used is the same. If you pull the pitch control toward you fully, it should speed up. If you push it back fully toward the gimble, the platter will slow down. You need to check that.

    I quite enjoy cleaning stinky gear that otherwise has good integrity and will be worth it after. For this I would start with a paintbrush to swab out the looser dust and fur with the vacuum held right nearby. Then I'd mist it with some diluted purpleblaster etc. and go over with a soft bristle brush and toothbrush in some spots. Wipe down with a damp rag and its then 95% clean. After the actual electronics and mechanical repairs etc I'd finish off with some car dashboard type products and a microfibre cloth, it'll sparkle. From my guitar building I have a stationary cloth buffing wheel, and that with the finest polish compound does a great job on polishing any dullness and smaller scratches out of the dustcovers.
