    Congratulations on 10 years and 60,000kms on the wr250r. I agree with all that you have said about the bike. I bought a new 2012 wr250r and have done 38,000kms. I also got into adventure riding because of long way round. I love my bike and think it is the best bike for adventure riding. I am 63 years old and hope to never stop riding my bike.

    Nice one mate! Just discovered your channel. I wrote a 2020 model off I bought new in a tangle with a car, two years ago. I've missed it everyday since. Finally found a replacement local to me in my state. Pick it up tomorrow. Feel like a little kid before Christmas. Best bike I've ever owned.

    Great video Tom, your enthusiasm for your WR drips out of every sentence and commentary. I first rode one as a long term test for a magazine here in NZ in 2012, I fell in love with and swore if the chance to own one came up I’d grab it. Fast forward almost 10 years and and my kids growing up, a divorce and some tough times a friend said ‘you need a motorcycle in your life’. They had just stopped making them and no shops had any left, I found a near new one for sale and it’s been love ever since. It doesn’t do anything amazingly except everything enough to be the only bike I need and I know I’ll never part with it. Re: the swingarm issue - simply fit a larger counter shaft sprocket and compensate on the rear for whatever gearing you desire, it makes the chain clear just enough (I ground down the rubber spacer under the C/S sprocket cover enough to clear the chain).

    Loved watching all your adventures over the years Tom! ,think you were one of the ever urging reasons I bought my 2014 CBR500r & have now done 80,000km on it. Look forward to seeing what ya get up to in the future - Hope to meet ya one day.
    Hell yea motorbikes!

    Nice. What a bulletproof bike. More fun than a Honda. Just as reliable as old Hondas. The WR really took off where the old XR Hondas left the chat.
    Everyone I know with a KTM has also needed engines or a full rebuild at best. I’ll never touch one with a cent or dollar from my pocket.

    The best way to eliminate the swing arm issue it change to a 14t front sprocket and 49to 52 rear depending on how much you ride highway to get to the trails. I have possibly the last one ever made. I bought it new in April 2021 and has a build date of 12/2020

    I can't agree with you more. Been flogging my WR250R since I bought it new in 08. My suspension upgrade by Go Race here in the US was the cherry on top. i plan to ride her until the wheels fall off. Her, along with my 08 KTM 990 have been the perfect on and off-road duo. Cheers from Utah, US.

    I just bought a 2018 WR250R, love it, I also have a 2007 ZX10R and a 2006 GSXR 750, the WR250R can go anywhere, so light and so fun to wheelie. I had a brand new 2014 DRZ400SM, should never have sold that, but at the time i needed the cash, I prefer the WR250R, fuel injection, light and bulletproof, yes we all wish they would make a WR300R or a WR450R, but with the same reliability. Awesome vid, many nods from 🇨🇦

  • @tosgem
    @tosgem 8 місяців тому +3

    My WR did 95,000km (with one valve adjustment) before it was stolen. I did Oodnadatta track on the supermoto tyres, and with my light camping gear out on the Stuart Highway I was quicker than another bloke on a KLR650 (with knobbies and loaded down with gear). He couldn't break 110km/h into the strong headwind. I was able to tuck and wind it out to 155km/h indicated, and cruised at that speed for a while where I was allowed. Also did track days at Broadford. The little motor copped a flogging, and at my 80,000km service the mechanic said I might need a piston after 100,000km as he was noticing a slight amount of wear... but I never got that far :( He said the rest of the motor looked in perfect condition, one exhaust valve was slightly out and that was it.
    Regarding the chain eating the swingarm, I never wrecked my swingarm. I switched to a 14 tooth sprocket on the front, kept the chain well lubed and kept it tensioned according to the Yamaha service bulletin for this issue. I think the chain needs 1cm of slack when you're sitting on it, measured at the chainguard, but look it up yourself as the bike has been gone a while now. I also changed the plastic protector a few times, but with all the changes I mentioned it stopped wearing those out quickly.

    • @Thomas-yv5yw
      @Thomas-yv5yw 3 місяці тому

      I was going to ask how many piston changes he had to do... I guess i have my answer !!
      I want an enduro bike that doesn't need the engine pulled out once a year I think it's pretty hard to find.
      Seems like there only are people doing competition stuff and nothing in the middle

    I had 74000 ish Km's on my WRr when I sold it and the only things I had to do, one chain slider, three valve adjustments, manual cam chain adjuster, I had the clutch plates replaced probably didn't need it.

    I've owned a 2009 wr250x for years. I've had two main problems. My cam chain tensioner had the same issue, so I got a manual one. I also had the seal for the coolant pump fail, so I had to flush the oil out of the coolant (it made a whine when I would rev it). Otherwise It has been very reliable. I used it for daily commuting before COVID. My chain never worn through anything like yours. I lube it often and don't off-road much. I'm not sure what caused that on yours? I still have the original chain bumper with around 40k miles on it. Maybe it's my large rear sprocket? I used a hydrophilic clutch for a while, but switched back to the cable. Now I use the stunt clutch. I also got the quicker throttle tube and the lowered gearing. I custom tuned the power commander. I chopped off the top of the air box. So many mods.

    How does that one handle heat? I was looking into one WR450F and it wasn't even hot and it idled like few minutes and began to vomit coolant. There was too much issues with wheel spokes and some other quite minor issues, and it also feeled really tame, which felt weird too, but anyway they were too much for me for what its price was. It still bothers a bit could it been good "dual sport" bike, but not similar ones were even close to me at the time I was looking into them.
