I rode nothing but Honda for years and years, once I rode a Ktm I never went back, Ktm is in a different league, currently have a xcf 250, a excf 500 and a 690r enduro, covers everything I ride, the 500 is definitely the go to bike.
Can't really disagree with anything you had to say in your review. I've had my Honda for a couple years now. It's my favorite bike that I've ever owned, my personal unicorn bike. I test rode a KTM 500 before I got the Honda and it was the vibrations that had me look at the Honda. When I first got the Honda, I was pretty inexperienced at off-road riding and was always riding slow, even if the trail was flowy. So the stock ECU was replaced right away. I recently put the stock back in, just to test it for gas mileage in comparison as I'm planning to try the Big Bend BDR-X, where I need every mpg I can get. I went out for a fast single track rip and had no issues. But when I had to ride slow because I had a new rider with me, I couldn't wait to get off the bike. The aftermarket ECU went back in. But the stock ECU should be okay for the extra mpg if/when I do that BDR. The stock ECU can now be re-flashed by 550 Performance for around $200 and the reviews are good, though I'm not speaking from experience. I think the Honda makes the best compromises for my use. It doesn't have the power or smooth and linear power delivery for off road like the KTM, but it's got the refinement, stability, and lack of vibration that makes it a better bike to be on for a long period of time and for any amount of time on road. It's a reasonable short range daily commuter bike; it's how I usually get to and from work. It's got the subframe that makes it a capable light weight ADV bike. It's still an absolute ripper for flowy single track or open off road riding. I have a Beta XTrainer that is easier to ride off road, which requires a lot less muscling around, but the Honda is actually less fatiguing to ride for more than half an hour at a medium or faster pace because the suspension is so good and the bike is so smooth. Of the "dirt bike with lights" high performance dual sports I've tried (KTM 500, Beta 350 and 390), the Honda is the most comfortable and the only one I'd want for anything more than connecting trails.
Some good news for crf450L/RL owners: 550 Performance finally has an ecu reflash available for ~$200. Just got mine back and the bike is perfect now. I’m glad I waited! Additionally, IMS is releasing a 4.2-4.5 gallon tank later this month that’s only ~$50 more than the 3 gallon one. No pictures yet. I asked. They are taking preorders now.
Nice fair review. I have a (2020) CRF450L and it's honestly one of the best bikes I've ever owned. But.... You absolutely have to do 3 upgrades: ECU, tank and seat (all 3 mentioned in this review) Just these 3 things make the bike go from a rather frustrating, uncomfortable, unimpressive low milage bike, to a bloody amazing jack-of-all-trades one. It's astonishingly good when correctly set up. I have a few more upgrades too, aftermarket sump guard, bar risers etc. to make it fit me like a glove.. I genuinely love the bike now. I use it for commuting, adventure touring, heavy off-road and even some 6-7hrs continuously on the motorway at 120kmh - stopping only to fill fuel. It does everything i want. I chose it over a KTM as i wanted peace of mind on the reliability front. Sadly I've been out on rides and unfortunately it's usually the KTM/Huskys that don't start the next morning, or some other random issue. Obv I know Hondas are not 'perfect,', but so far I've had absolutely zero issues. It's taken me everywhere and has really been a great bike.
@@DB-sd3cw To be fair, the KTM/ Husky direct competitors to the 450L (350 and 500 EXCF) are pretty bulletproof. Some have even made it around the world, which I’m not sure anyone’s done on a Honda 450L?
Honda, if you’re listening: we want a 450L Rally. Big tank, 6,000mi intervals, big dashboard with nav tower and rally wind screen. You and Yamaha are the last to make a move into this category that we all want. LFG. :-)
One more comment cause I love my 450RL. 😆 10,000 miles in and don’t plan on selling it. Got the same ECU as you after 7,000 miles with stock ECU. After watching the video I think you nailed it! Can you believe I got it as my first bike to ride enduro and trails. With stock ECU! Didn’t let go of the clutch much. 😆 Anyway, you nailed it with your thoughts of it. IMO at least. Ride safe! 🏍️💨
I have a 2022 Honda CRF 450RL I bought this year with 369 miles on it. Installed a Taco Moto GET SX1, full Graves, rear spring for my weight, and a bunch of other mods…absolutely no complaints and saved a bunch of money getting a slightly used bike. BDR, TAT, multi day rides - Honda Single track enduro - KTM
I sold my 6- year owned XR650L for a 2019 CRF450L . I loved the 650 but the extra weight up high was a killer when you dropped it. The 450 carries its weight down low and is hardly noticeable.
Just rode my Honda crf250L rally (my first and only bike) last night and still love it. I’ve not ridden other bikes. I’m content with the rally for how/where I ride. Having said that, I’m excited about the BMW 450. Wish Honda had a 450 rally.
Thanks for talking about quiet exhaust, quiet pipes save off road riding areas. Thanks for the review, I came very close to buying one of these and sometimes regret not.
What amazing timing! And one of THE videos many people want. I just rode my 450RL with taco moto GET ECU the entire day around the blue ridge mountains of NC. 10,000 miles in and love it. But that’s just my opinion. I also rode my buddies 690 adv. Fun bike as well. Anyway, can’t wait to watch this! Appreciate what ya do Ian! Be safe! 🙏🏽🏍️💨
Of course Taco Moto Mike only sells what they think are the best and after casing my bike and crushing the skid plate (which isn’t bad for stock) I took Mike’s opinion and got the Molecule skid plate and it’s awesome In case anyone looks to get a different one. 🏍️💨
@@311badfish 👈🏼yep.😆 that’s the buddy with the rocket of a dirt bike in the 690. Gonna get one some day. Can you image taking your 1250 GSA where we went today. 😬 🥵 Shiiiiit.
Hey Ian. Just a note to thank you for the middleweight ADV guide download. I think it was a bit dated, but had enough relevance to allow me to pick a bike to fit my needs. Thanks so much for putting that information together and allowing us to download it and use it. The winner? A 2024 Yamaha Tenere. Lots of them on showroom floors with 2025 on deck, so I had some great offers. $2500+ off retail. I was getting beat to death on the DR650, so this is quite the upgrade for me. Thanks again!
Great stuff sir! I ride a WR450 here in CO and I don't know what else I could want from a single bike. Supermoto for the canyons, MX for the trails. I would love to know what you thought about the WRs.
Solid review. I just picked up a used 2019 with the standard upgrades. I understood the KTM weight was a dry weight spec when compared to the Honda’s weight weight spec. If that’s true it brings the difference to about 25lbs or so. I do think there intended uses and target market are just different enough. So far I’m loving the Honda but like to keep an open mind. That said, the troubles with KTM corporate are a little concerning when buying new. I think we all want KTM to get their act together with quality as a top priority. Anyway, nice review.
I own both bikes. The thing you need to know is if you're competitive or not. If you're just someone who rides casually on the weekend the Honda will suit you well. But if you are someone who has some race experience or is a good rider. You will want the ktm.
Thanks for your thorough and intelligent review, Ian. You didn’t miss a thing. We have both flavors of bikes in our ride group and concur with your opinions.
I have the 450RL. As much as I love off roading, the trails are over an hour away. Work is 45 minutes the other way. So I tend to commute with it, then on the weekends do single track. I also do long adventures with it. I went from Canada to Mexico then back to Canada. Next year I plan on a 6000 mile trip to Alaska. I have always wanted a KTM 500, but for what I realistic do, the Honda suites me better.
@ I did. Canada to Mexico in under 30 hours. Then road up the coast back to about an hour from the Canadian border. Average about 670 miles a day. The only issue was no cruise control, and going over 90 MPH in SoCal while everyone was passing me, the bike stalled, twice.
Great info. I recently took one of these bikes for a ride. I was very surprised at how well it felt on the road. For me it was better then my previous KTM690. Better suspension, better handling, more comfortable on the hwy, and great reliability. I have heard that a heavier flywheel really helps the stalling issues. This could be a unicorn bike for me. I currently have a plated 2023 WR450F as my proper dirt bike. Thanks for the input.
Ian, enjoyed this video. I ride the CRF450L off-road mainly sand dunes, along with friends who own KTM 450 and 500. The only time I hate the CRF is when I drop it and feel the weight. But overall there is a small difference between all the bikes when it comes to off-roading. I would love to own a KTM one time but might choose the 2 stroke which will be more fun and brings back old memories. All the best
I’ve been watching videos comparing the CRF250F, Yamaha wr250, and Husky TE250 as my first dirt bike, but this video was recommended so I decided to check it out. Thanks!
You're so lucky to have such a playground to ride around in!! Liked watching this video, love your content. Your transalp videos now have me glued to your channel 😂
I was a huge Honda guy literally had a basement showroom full of Honda people thought I was a Honda dealer but when I rode KTM for the first time I never sold that many bikes that fast and now my basement is a fleet of KTMs lol they’re the best bikes ever made never had a single issue the reliability it’s stupid good!
Just picked up a 24 350 EXCF ($9500 otd) and spent some time riding a 21 CRF450L. While I agree the suspension on the Honda is very impressive the low speed fueling was a deal breaker for me. I have been somewhat surprised with my KTM 350. I had a 21 FE 350 and it was gutless - felt like my old WRR but with more vibrations. The 24 definitely has more power and a nice power delivery. The suspension is pretty damn close to the Honda as well. Plus the KTM is easier to work one except for oil changes.
Not sure why so many people complain about highway or dual sport riding on the KTMs. They are literally plated race bikes made to just connect trails via a short road. You should know this going in to it.
Probably because KTM advertises them as dual sports, from their website: "Heading off to explore an abandoned town? Done. Churning dirt in a forest? Easy. Charging through the deep sandy deserts? Let's go! The 2025 KTM 500 EXC-F doesn't shy away from anything. Churning out serious power, and built around a lightweight frame with best-in-class suspension, this large-displacement powerhouse is surprisingly usable, making the KTM 500 EXC-F the ultimate half-liter weapon in anyone's dual-sport arsenal. "
My complaint is only with the vibrations of the 500. KTM knows how to fix this. They fixed it on the 300 2t back in 2017. They fixed it on the 690/701 around 2019.
@@youtubeaccount9058 I hear ya, got a smooth 2-stroke and a viby KTM 500, hard to beat how smooth the 2-stroke is but the 500 can do things the 2-stroke is more limited, namely more dual sport-ish stuff.
Iv had the 300l for almost a year now. Have done some protection mods, bars & a high flow air filter. Would like to do the exhaust but i like it quiet as well. Definitely need a tune tho. I also put a k-tech rear shock & the race tech spring in the left fork. Much better.
You mentioned a lot of the same reasons I bought a KTM instead of a Honda CRF450L, back when I bought my KTM in 2019. The price of a KTM was only slightly more than a CRF450L. 1. For the weight of the CRF, it made no sense to spend the amount of money to buy a Honda considering the CRF wasn't that much lighter than a DR-Z I've been riding for 15+ years. I wanted a bike that was significantly lighter than my DR-Z, which would make trail riding easier. 2. I already knew that the CRF was basically unrideable on slow technical terrain off the showroom floor and would need expensive upgrade for the ECU, so that was another reason not to buy a Honda. I've had my 450 EXC-F for 5 riding seasons now. It's not the bike I ride the majority of the time - it's my bike for "special occasions": 1. Single track trails that require a dual sport motorcycle to get to, or return from 2. Special vacations such as my 2020 trip to Silverton, CO where a fuel injected bike was a must vs. my incorrectly jetted for high elevation DRZ, or the trip to Death Valley in April of 2024. The DRZ only came out of the trailer once, and I regretted riding it that day. The KTM 500 EXC-F is a vibrating monster. I despised it when I test rode one on a demo ride at the Touratech Rally. The 350 is much more tame with regard to vibration. My 450 is in the middle , but closer to the 350 for levels of vibratation. I've done a few things to reduce the vibration on my 450. If I buy another KTM Dual Sport, I'd get the 350 like you have. A long time riding buddy has a 2023 350 EXC-F and he loves it. Prior to that he rode a DR-Z dating back to 2005 when I first started riding with him. My KTM is still stock other than tires and changing sprockets to make it friendlier for trail riding.
Mate, I'm Mossy from Australia 🇦🇺 Awesome videos on your channel. Appreciate how much time and effort you have put in. I've just bought a Honda CB 750 Hornet road bike 🏍 I love it. I've owned a Husky before and wasn't its biggest fan. I actually own the last Honda CR 125 2007 2 stroke sold in Australia. Oh, and a Jeff Emig replica Kawasaki KX 250. I think for me at my age, the CRF 450 will be the go. Great videos 🤘
If you venture out of CA; you can do a Ktm 450 xcfw and skip the ‘must do’ ecu, and exhaust. Add a few things (horn, dot tires, maybe blinkers) and save a bundle vs upgraded 500; AND be ~40lbs lighter than rl.
Fantastic Warts and all review Ian. You nailed it - Honda and HUSKY/KTM are so similar and the re-flash of the stock ECU by 550 seems to level the playing field a bit. If you use some of the initial price difference to cover that reflash then IMO gives a slight lead to Honda. Respringing suspension for most riders over 100KG (220 lbs) is needed on either bike so again the pricing is still in favour of Honda. Seat concepts seat needed on all. so again all bikes affected. however the stock Husky seat is a bit better than the Honda. Service and parts availability in the area you live and ride should be factored in as it does matter in whole of life cost and service as you live with the bikes for long lifetime for most buyers. Not everyone has the luxury of changing bikes every couple of years or can afford multiple bikes. On road costs here in Aus are about AUD$500 (USD$325.00) a year for Rego and CTPI here in Victoria Australia. For me in Aus parts are equally available and at times need to be waited on but Honda get a slight price advantage for standard items. Bark busters or similar full wrap handguards help keep spare parts costs down (Levers and perches). oil filters, air filters and spark plugs , clutch plates and clutch kits. sprockets and bearings and fork seals, as typical replacement parts tend to be more Exy on the KTM/Husky than for the Honda and most are in stock but sometimes not. so Honda has a slight advantage on maintenance costs items. If you DIY then its a again a line ball and how much time you spend on the task , but if you pay to have your bike maintained then KTM /Husky ted to charge more for a similar service here in Aus. Yamaha WR450 still sold here in Aus and would be worthy contender to the mix, as Yamaha still make a fine bike but it is really and enduro bike that can be road registered much like the KTM and Husky, Again well done - maybe you could do the WR450 comparison in future.
Anza borrego is not too far from me, ill need to put my dirt tires on and hit that trail! Also i want to point out that an ECU reflash is now available for the crf450rl from 550Performance, should handle terrian like that much easier!
This bike always comes back into focus, some of my riding club swears by it, others swear at it due to stalling. If that one item was lessened, I think Honda would do better. Or perhaps that and a "CRF450RL Adventure" spec with factory large tank and other tidbits. One item everyone calls out in favour: the suspension being so good. I am torn and still debating. I'll keep riding my fun CRF250F off-road and something else on-road until I settle this. Would love to have "just one".
Superb review & defacto comparison. At $10K the 450 is a very competitive offering. Tho, the small fuel capacity/range and its smoother more dual sport oriented features seem to be conflicting design requirements. +1 for quite bikes.
Love my 450rl. Here’s my list of upgrades that make it even better. Yoshi pipe, Vortex ecu, Baja designs squadron pro headlight, moose racing skid plate, Yoshi tail tidy, doubletake mirrors, seat concepts comfort xl seat, seat concepts comfort low seat, Kouba lowering link, Motoz Tractionator enduro IT tires, barkbuster hand guards, IMS 3 gallon tank, zeta adjustable shift lever, zeta footpegs, zeta chain guide, aluminum rear disc guard……. I think that’s it 😅. I’ve done everything from dual sport to technical single track on it, however after getting a 230 pound KTM with a rekluse auto clutch and custom enduro suspension, I probably won’t use my 450rl for single track anymore. Lol
Good vid Ian. Interesting comparisons. Honda is just to heavy. I used to ride that same area many years back. Those sand washes were tough. A lot of times I traveled north of the Salton Sea up through dry washes on my BMWR1100RS. Yeah buddy, a handful and a half. Interesting side note was the difficulty the rider had getting his Tenere back up on two wheels. Mine is killer plain and simple. I haven't installed the crash protection bars yet. That would help some but it's flat as a pancake and top heavy as hell. My shoulder is broken from it sitting still and falling. That said these bikes are much better if only the seat height was manageable. What a difference an ecu can make. From your first ride it was much more manageable and useable. One could trip with it now. All good from east Kentucky. Next time.
I have put some time in on the Honda 450RL and I own a ktm 350. I would say the biggest factors for me were the extra weight and the frame geometry on the Honda compared to the ktm. The Honda is really comfortable going fast through the desert or on fire roads but is a handful on single track. The ktm is extremely comfortable on single track and still really capable on the fast stuff. Maybe not quiet as stable feeling as the Honda when you are going fast through rough desert terrain but pretty close. If you have the money get the ktm/husky. Both will need a ecu and some other mods no matter what imo so the ktm will cost more in the end. One other note; the Honda has a better wiring harness so it is more reliable for that.
I have a 23 KTM 500 and previously owned a 18 Husky 501. The first time that I rode one I was shocked at how much it vibrated. One thing that I have experienced is that when riding on the street they just don’t feel comfortable, but once you get to the dirt they’re in their element. Just turns into a completely different bike. I’ve been to several different off- road events and the Husky/ KTM’s always seems to be the most popular bike. It’s like some kind of cult 😂.
The problem with buying any other brand of dual sport besides KTM and Husky is you are giving away the advantage of 14 years of research, development, and customer testing on that engine/chassis. You may think Japanese is more reliable, but I would rather have a bike with a few small issues with every single one fixed in the aftermarket, parts on the shelf, hundreds of how to videos and writeups. My FE501 has 28k now and it’s very reliable. Just pretend you have this Honda and try to get a few common parts like a broken case cover or a brake lever.
As a transalp owner , who looked at the 450RL for months , but the seat height turned me off ,just asking your opinion on the 450RL bitumen touring capability for say 250km bitumen back road trips ? On a 0 to 10 if I had the formerly owned Honda CRF300 rally for the described purchase I would give it 7, the Transalp 9. Considering buying the 450RL for its relative lightweight and proper off road capabilities.
The 450l is a decent DS bike for the 75 percent road and two track guys. It's kinda a modernized DRZ 400. Only problem is they want almost KTM prices for them . And for the off road guys who just need a plate to put together trails there's absolutely nothing better than the KTM husky platform.
@ChristopherErickson-o8c Honda reliability is mostly a mith at this point in there current performance motorcycle line . A old XR , ya they where pretty reliable other than the cam and rocker failures. Older commercial grade Honda power equipment was very reliable. But as far as performance bikes they change that in 2003 when they brought out the CRF 450 motor design It was an absolute powerhouse but the cost was reliability. I've worked on them all a lot in my business over the years. I'm not just a fan boy .
About uncomfortable stock seats... (I ride an F800GS, which a reviewer from the UK's 'Motorcycle News' once said had a stock saddle that was "like a razorblade up the chuff" - and I entirely agree. Even BMW's 'Comfort Seat' was only slightly better). There are so many tales of bikes that look great, have great engines but are horribly uncomfortable even after an hour's riding. I wonder why bike manufacturers go to all the expense of design, tooling and production - and these days with electronics up the wazoo - yet skimp on something as basic as providing a comfortable perch to sit on for a long stretch! How difficult can that be?
I’ll take my CRF450l any day over a Kmart Trail Master. I see and hear all 4 strokes snuffing out a bunch unlike our good old 2 strokes. The weight….at least my Honda has a full aluminum sub frame. All of the normal mods have been done to mine and she is a rockstar. This summer, 1500 miles round trip, we rode the ORBDR and everyday I had a big grin on my face.
@@issigonis94cagree 100%. Major damage to the KTM reputation was caused by the early 690, which broke valve rockers. This was solved but then came along the 790/890 twins which had a terrible reputation for poor build quality and many faults. The 500s from around 2013 are superb, in my opinion the best performance single of modern times.
My 21 Six Days 500 was borderline unrideable. Couldn't even ride down the street without it flaming out. You should have explored the $200 ecu flash for the Honda and the cheap/free muffler mods.
I’ve owned the Honda and two Husky 501’s. Ian is spot on about ease of maintenance- the Husky is a breeze. Both my Huskies have done serious mileage and never let me down once. Another real advantage of the KTM/Husky platform is the “cush drive” in the clutch - it makes for a better shift experience and it has to be more sympathetic to the gearbox.
Ian, thank you so much for this such an in-depth review, great comparisons on two excellent bikes, from what I’ve heard from everybody they have put in a new ECU in there 450 Honda.
Good series on the Honda. Now I know I don't want one. Next bike I get will most likely be a KTM/Husq. 80% of the guys I know ride a KTM and for a good reason
I see you ride with the stock exhaust, is this impacting the power output ? Are you running stock gearing also? Thanks and love the channel. I ride a CRF450L ……I sold my FE501 to get the Honda.
The stock L spark arrester is the limiting factor. Go get the X spark arrester and you'll get a little bit more up top. Larger pipe, direct bolt on. 550 performance can reflash the stock ecu and fix the decel fuel cut.
Well done. You missed a couple things. The Honda air box and filter are far better than the KTM. The Brakes are better. The 3.2 gallon IMS cost me less than the KTM alternative. My AIM ECU was just under 800.00. Honda has a stock cooling fan. I run 2k miles on oil change. You hit the nail on the head with the seat and ECU change being mandatory.
Some KTM models come stock with fans, not all. The KTM airbox is badly designed. Its cover/lid design has open gaps on all sides that let dust and water suck into the box easily. It doesn’t create a seal directly against the box. The Honda design gets its air from a top mounted rubber snorkel and is sealed on all sides. The Honda uses Nisan brake calipers which have a better feel, less maintenance and are easier to bleed.
@@hoosiertrailriderwell we are comparing to the ktm 500, which does have a radiator fan. Ktm also has brembo. There is no argument for nissin over brembo. Lastly, the filter is what keeps dust out of the intake, not the air box cover. No airbox is keeping water out if you sink the bike. The Honda is a great bike, but we don’t need to make things up to try to justify it being better than the ktm…
Nothing made up that I’ve commented on. No need to besmirch my credibility by sarcastic remarks. I own both CRF’s and KTM. I’m just comparing what I found as differences between the two. Hopefully others can make a informed decision on which way they would want to go.
Would love to see a review on your new KTM 350 and a comparison to the Beta 350. If you could please reply by saying the reason you got the Ktm this time, since you also had a Beta🙏 Thank you. Really love your work.
Off-topic, but could you take a look at the relatively new Garmin Treadmill 2? It has the same footprint (and powered mount) as the Zumo XT 2, but has twice the memory and comes with a boatload of trail maps. It is also compatible with the Outdoor Maps+ whereas the Zumo is not.
If the KTM is carbureted and not TPI or TBI, I could agree with you on the reliability point. Otherwise just go with a 300cc 2-stroke Sherco. IF YAMAHA WOULD EVER GET OFF IT'S STINKING BUTT AND GIVE US THE WR450R WE ALL WANT!!!
Another thing to consider might be the stability of the company and how it might affect service and parts with KTM having serious financial problems which could lead to bankruptcy.
Loved the video but I do disagree withthe time to take off honda fuel tank. It's 2 bolts for seat then 3 bolts for tank un clip the fuel line and fuel pump wire and it's out. Maybe 5 minutes at the most. I'm waiting on the new IMS tank to comeout though. definitely want 4 gallons

Is there a way for adding front wheel ABS to such motocycles? I really prefer to have it on tarmac, which is a part of dualsport riding. Unfortunately light bikes don't have it.
I've owned two EXC500Fs and a CRF450L (to which I added a full exhaust and ECU), and now own a '24 EXC350F. The 350 is my favorite. EXC500Fs vibrated too much, though their suspensions were sweet. The CRF power delivery was never right even with the mods, it needs more flywheel. It vibrated like a paint shaker too. The suspension was shit, way too stiff even fully loosened up. The 350 vibrates a fair bit, but not like the 450/500s. It has enough power on dirt, the fueling is pretty good, the suspension is good, and it is pretty light. All of the bike's seats are excruciating to ride sitting down on for any length of time.
you consider the that waypoint adv tire to be a 50/50 tire? I run them on my gs650 X-Challenfe and find them to be a lot more dirt focused than my shinko 50/50 tires
I had a new one in 2023 and i was so disappointed with the throttle twitch and flame out. I would have thought a 10k bike would be pretty darn good. That combined with needing oil every 6th fill up is just ridiculous. And then every 3rd oil change you need to do valves. No thanks

You're the Paul Harrell of motorcycle reviews: Thorough, meticulous, precise, and well respected.
thanks
Right? If I want an honest, non-hyped review of a bike from a rider experienced enough to form a valid opinion, I’m watching Big Rock.
both have the coolest jobs ever
@@GiosueMannino Well...Paul is, unfortunately, permanently retired...RIP.
Paul’s reviews were great.
I rode nothing but Honda for years and years, once I rode a Ktm I never went back, Ktm is in a different league, currently have a xcf 250, a excf 500 and a 690r enduro, covers everything I ride, the 500 is definitely the go to bike.
I got a CRF450RL for my wife! 😃It’s the best trade, I’ve ever made! 👍
Your wife is tall
so you traded your wife for a 450RL? best trade ever?
Of the "dirt bike with lights" high performance dual sports I've tried (KTM 500, Beta 350 and 390), the Honda is the most comfortable and the only one I'd want for anything more than connecting trails.
great input, thank you for this post
Some good news for crf450L/RL owners:
550 Performance finally has an ecu reflash available for ~$200. Just got mine back and the bike is perfect now. I’m glad I waited!
Additionally, IMS is releasing a 4.2-4.5 gallon tank later this month that’s only ~$50 more than the 3 gallon one. No pictures yet. I asked. They are taking preorders now.
these are great options... thanks
Wow about time, having to shell out 1k for an aftermarket ecu is ridiculous
Thank you for being brave enough to call out KTM's laughable reliability issues.
LFG. :-)
Just use the Crf 300 l rally stuff, and we'll be ok
One more comment cause I love my 450RL. 😆
10,000 miles in and don’t plan on selling it.
Got the same ECU as you after 7,000 miles with stock ECU.
After watching the video I think you nailed it!
Can you believe I got it as my first bike to ride enduro and trails.
With stock ECU!
Didn’t let go of the clutch much. 😆
Anyway, you nailed it with your thoughts of it.
IMO at least.

I have a 2022 Honda CRF 450RL I bought this year with 369 miles on it. Installed a Taco Moto GET SX1, full Graves, rear spring for my weight, and a bunch of other mods…absolutely no complaints and saved a bunch of money getting a slightly used bike.
BDR, TAT, multi day rides - Honda
Single track enduro - KTM
I’ll be riding my XR650L into the apocalypse. 💪
🫡
And out the other side.
I sold my 6- year owned XR650L for a 2019 CRF450L . I loved the 650 but the extra weight up high was a killer when you dropped it. The 450 carries its weight down low and is hardly noticeable.
Just found a 2016 with 92 miles this weekend. What a sweet bike! Needs some minor things but it's so fun
@ lucky man! Not even sold anymore in my country.
Just rode my Honda crf250L rally (my first and only bike) last night and still love it. I’ve not ridden other bikes. I’m content with the rally for how/where I ride. Having said that, I’m excited about the BMW 450. Wish Honda had a 450 rally.
My bike and my thoughts exactly. Less the BMW part lol.
Thanks for talking about quiet exhaust, quiet pipes save off road riding areas.
Thanks for the review, I came very close to buying one of these and sometimes regret not.
I got the Husky 501 this year, for $1,000 less than the Honda, as they were clearing the 2024's. In Canada.

Of course Taco Moto Mike only sells what they think are the best and after casing my bike and crushing the skid plate (which isn’t bad for stock) I took Mike’s opinion and got the Molecule skid plate and it’s awesome In case anyone looks to get a different one.

Thanks for sharing!
You ride the 450rl from canada to Mexico? And will ride it to Alaska?
@ I did. Canada to Mexico in under 30 hours. Then road up the coast back to about an hour from the Canadian border. Average about 670 miles a day. The only issue was no cruise control, and going over 90 MPH in SoCal while everyone was passing me, the bike stalled, twice.
@@Theultimateoutdoors nice, stock seat on the 450rl?
@@keithquinn5624 no, I have the seat concepts. They seem to be pretty good for the Honda. However they have bad fitment for other bikes like the DRZ.
@ nice, thinking of replacing my dr650 eventually for one, u in bc?
Hi I got my bike around Jan this year and have clocked up 15,000 Ks, can't wait for your review. Note# Australia.
Great info. I recently took one of these bikes for a ride. I was very surprised at how well it felt on the road. For me it was better then my previous KTM690.
Better suspension, better handling, more comfortable on the hwy, and great reliability. I have heard that a heavier flywheel really helps the stalling issues. This
could be a unicorn bike for me. I currently have a plated 2023 WR450F as my proper dirt bike. Thanks for the input.
Great to hear!
What a great channel you’ve created. Thx. Excellent review work here.
Ian, enjoyed this video. I ride the CRF450L off-road mainly sand dunes, along with friends who own
KTM 450 and 500.
Looks like an epic riding area! Another great video. Thanks for the entertainment and knowledge Ian
Great review. I bought the KTM 3 months ago after agonizing over it. Pretty sure it was the right choice.
The average IQ is 100 so all the people complaining most likely fall on the lower half.
It's not the bike I ride the majority of the time - it's my bike for "special occasions":
1. Single track trails that require a dual sport motorcycle to get to, or return from
Loving the intro texts so much 😂
Excellent reviews as always - love to hear your thoughts & experiences with these bikes,
I'd probably buy the brand that will still be in business next year #justsaying
Yamaha WR450 still sold here in Aus and would be worthy contender to the mix, as Yamaha still make a fine bike but it is really and enduro bike that can be road registered much like the KTM and Husky,
Again well done - maybe you could do the WR450 comparison in future.
Anza borrego is not too far from me, ill need to put my dirt tires on and hit that trail!
Also i want to point out that an ECU reflash is now available for the crf450rl from 550Performance, should handle terrian like that much easier!
I've been loving my 24 KTM 500.. I could care less if there is a little more vibration. You don't buy a dual sport for the highway driving experience.
Good review series! I went FE 350 but definitely considered the Honda... If I didn't already have a 690 as well I could see having the Honda...
Swearing by it or swearing at it! Haha I'm gonna have to use that line at some point.
The Vortex ECU absolutely fixed the throttle issues on my 450L. I didn’t even need the throttle tamer.
Great review. I wonder how the resale value compares after a couple of years?
Lol
Another good honest review. Well done Ian!
It depends on where you live... in some places it's easier to get Honda replacement parts than KTM. Where I live, I can get both equally easily.
What year is your husky?
@@Eg-tl2js 2016, it’s been used hard too. Even drowned it past the airbox once and it still runs great.
Did you fit the direction indicators or do they come fitted ? In the uk they don’t come with indicators
As always the best review thanks
leo vince should really make an exhaust for this bike, that bike "needs" one, and leo pipes are like 15db quieter than fmf on other models
The 450l is a decent DS bike for the 75 percent road and two track guys. It's kinda a modernized DRZ 400. Only problem is they want almost KTM prices for them . And for the off road guys who just need a plate to put together trails there's absolutely nothing better than the KTM husky platform.
Except for the honda reliability...
@ChristopherErickson-o8c
Honda reliability is mostly a mith at this point in there current performance motorcycle line .
Great video, congratulations! Precise, real life honest video. Wish you the best.
I appreciate that!
You don't need to denigrate other brands to make your point.
ktm exc are not unreliable, they are just not and i am glad you said it - yes some of their bikes have issues but the exc platform is not one of them
@@ogasi1798 100%. Tarred with the 890 brush by most commentators which is daft.
What’s the cheap free muffler mod? I’m currently deciding between a 24 500 excf vs crf450x/RL.

Thank you a lot for this review 😍🏍️
No problem 👍
I see you ride with the stock exhaust, is this impacting the power output ? Are you running stock gearing also? Thanks and love the channel. I ride a CRF450L ……I sold my FE501 to get the Honda.
The stock L spark arrester is the limiting factor. Go get the X spark arrester and you'll get a little bit more up top. Larger pipe, direct bolt on. 550 performance can reflash the stock ecu and fix the decel fuel cut.
Difference between the Honda and KTM. Honda will still exist in 2026. 😬
Lmaoooi
Lot longer than that!
Not only the company but the actual bike…
Exactly 😂
Thanks.. The Honda will be great gravel travel companion 👌But the KTM 390 Adv looks very interesting too
KTM has stock fan as well. What makes the honda airbox/brakes better?
Man that sand gives me some flashbacks. Hit some deep cross-rutted silt at 25 mph a few weeks ago and gave myself a concussion.
Even the GoPro made those tough sections look serious, very beautiful canyons too!
Would love to see a review on your new KTM 350 and a comparison to the Beta 350. If you could please reply by saying the reason you got the Ktm this time, since you also had a Beta🙏 Thank you. Really love your work.
The beta looks great, but i don't have a local dealer.
@ Thanks
I liked this video. Not as much infomercial. Pleasant to watch. Thanks.
Excited for this new KTM 390 Enduro coming out
Off-topic, but could you take a look at the relatively new Garmin Treadmill 2? It has the same footprint (and powered mount) as the Zumo XT 2, but has twice the memory and comes with a boatload of trail maps. It is also compatible with the Outdoor Maps+ whereas the Zumo is not.
How is the difference in vibration between the 350 and 450?
honda 450 smoother than any ktm 350, 450 or 500.
Crfl is a dualsport, the exc series are more enduro bikes
The Husqvarna seems like the better bike…hands down. I’m a Honda guy too…
As a transalp owner , who looked at the 450RL for months , but the seat height turned me off ,just asking your opinion on the 450RL bitumen touring capability for say 250km bitumen back road trips ?
On a 0 to 10 if I had the formerly owned Honda CRF300 rally for the described purchase I would give it 7, the Transalp 9.
I also prefer a 350.
How about the valves, which one is easier ?
8:01 locally known as "cats claw" brush. Not a fun scrub to tangle with. 😁
yeah after trying the rear waypoint I'm going back to the d sport
Great videos as always. But your rocky mountain affiliate link never works! I've tried several times trying to help you out!
Looking forward to a long term review of the new DRZ-4S
you consider the that waypoint adv tire to be a 50/50 tire? I run them on my gs650 X-Challenfe and find them to be a lot more dirt focused than my shinko 50/50 tires
how do the vibes on the Honda compare to the KTM 350 EXCF?
You mentioned the KTM 500 is worse but how about the 350?
2024 ktm's 500excf can be bought for a lot less than that stalling Honda now. Bought one for $7k base + fees and taxes.
What did you pay out the door ?
I've been to Anza Berrego many times on my 690! Great spot!
I had a new one in 2023 and i was so disappointed with the throttle twitch and flame out. I would have thought a 10k bike would be pretty darn good. That combined with needing oil every 6th fill up is just ridiculous. And then every 3rd oil change you need to do valves. No thanks
