    After recording this reaction video I watched a version with lyrics on the screen. Wow. I wasn't ready.
    One feels out of place for evening commenting on the music when the story the lyrics tell is so tragic.

      Not to mention it was repeated by Russia recently (currently still ongoing I believe) Regardless of the nasty politics, I can only feel sorrow for the citizens of Ukraine.

      It's good man, we all do it. It's perfectly fine to be amazed by the musicianship in one go, and then hear and contemplate the message in another. This was recorded prior to the current war devastating their country (again), but has newfound poignancy in the last several months. Now that they are touring again as ambassadors for Ukraine, they have been playing this song live and it really hits home.

      I am glad that you did a reaction to this great song. Some reactors have seemed to shy away from Home Back which I don't understand at all. Jinjer has made clear that they want the world to understand the horrors of the invasion and this video, which painfully reflects the lyrics, is the best way to do that. Jinjer has been living with war and the inability to go home for 8 years now. The more people that discover this band, song and video, the better.

      And this song came out before the current invasion by Russia. Russia invaded in 2014 in the region if Ukraine that Jinjer is from and they had to leave their homes at that time and move to Kiev. After the latest war started this song took on an even stronger meaning and the band started selling Tshirts that said "we want our Homeback" to raise money for Ukraine.

    Great reaction! One of the things I appreciate the most is you breaking down the rhythms and beats as well as pointing out things musically that I hadn’t caught on to before (like the dissonance in certain sections and how it gives you an unsettled feeling).
    Unfortunately this song was 100% prophetic. The tea party scene is especially heart wrenching as is symbolizes a child’s perspective of hiding out in the basement of a home or bomb shelter, while trying to pretend that things are normal or ok. And it works for a while, until there is ‘fire in the hole’ and the shelter is hit (thus the dead partygoers and destroyed tea set and table). I read somewhere there was also some symbolism behind the 3 different masks, but I can’t remember what it was. Brutal, but important song - delivered in a very Jinjer way.

    • @uthamal
      @uthamal Рік тому +10

      It wasn't prophetic. It was referring to the war that actually started in 2014 in the Donesk area where they are from. They fled from Donesk to Lviv to escape the war. But yes, an important ong and even more relevant today.

  • @ugg10video76
    @ugg10video76 Рік тому +22

    Great reaction and glad you dipped back in for the lyrics. Afaik the Rabbit/Hare, Fox and Cat are characters from a Ukrainian folk tale, I don’t remember the details but has similarities with Aesop’s Fox and Dog fable where the fox tried to kill the rabbit but the rabbit teams up with the cat to defeat the fox, probably a lot more nuanced but fits the situation in 2014 in Ukraine with the little guy standing up against the big guy. Jinjer are musically and lyrically so complex and yet so accessible and Tatiana uses symbolism so well in her lyrics - Pisces astrological sign/fish/emerald scales/bipolar disorder/self esteem and expectations of others etc., Perennial/Depression/Seasonal Affectional Disorder/growth and renewal in the spring etc. and this one albeit more straight forward has some great so comparisons between military and common place things (Angel/jet fighter, Unicorns/soldiers with rifles, Mermaid/air raid sirens). Enjoy the ride.

    That Alice-in-Wonderland-esque bonkers bossa nova chilled section to break up one of the heaviest (& suitably unnerving) songs you're ever likely to hear is touched by true #Genius imho.... I mean, who else would do that?!... & yet after a couple of listens nothing else would seem to fit the thing o_O
    All 4 of them are *so* good at what they do. I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy a whole album of Tatiana in her lounge-y vocals with the lads doing funkily interesting non-distortion stuff in a jazz club, just as much as I do their heavyAF albums! :)

  • @jeffwellman8347

    It's their first refugee experience imagined through the eyes of a child. The 7/8 time signature keeps the listener in an unbalanced state to support the impact of the lyrics. Tatiana writes very intelligent and impactful lyrics.

  • @buckgillispie605

  • @the_hetman
    @the_hetman Рік тому +12

    The time at the start of the song is 15, or more likely a bar of 8 followed by a bar of 7. Jinjer do that a lot where they will drop the last beat of the second bar. Some people count the verse of Pieces as a bar of 4 followed by a bar of 3 rather than in 7 because of where the stresses fall.

    • @ericpeterson7512

    Since you did go back and read the lyrics, the lines "is it an Angel watching over us? Is it an air -fighter making a fuss" ,along with the graphics that look like an angel, are all referring to a Chaff cloud. Chaff is launched by aircraft (or ships) and explodes into a cloud of aluminum foil, which acts as a Radar decoy. The way the wind carries it , and how sunlight reflects of of it, could make it look like an angel.

    If you want some insane pick scrapes and layering check out some Spiritbox. Insanely catchy riffs everywhere. They're also one of Jinjer's favorite bands, IIRC. Since you seem to like odd riffs I'd suggest Bleach Bath, which is from when they were just releasing singles. Holy Roller is absolutely massive sounding and has some crazy sounding pick scrapes, Rule of Nines is a good middle ground. They seem to be really exploring around different styles, I don't think you can go wrong with anything off their album Eternal Blue but they're definitely pushing towards stuff that sounds bigger and more ambient there where the focus is on the composition and not technicality.

    About the tea party scene - there is an old fable about a rabbit, a dog and a tiger. Long story short, its a fable about sharing and communication in times of danger. If you notice, all are being fed tea by Tatiana, who is symbolizing government lulling its subjects. Later, all are left dead on the floor with chaos all around. I hate to be spooky af but I think that scene has something to do with something being used to kill people without them necessarily knowing that its happening - perhaps chemical or biological warfare

    No single metal sub-genre or pair of sub-genres can describe Jinjer's music in a satisfactory way as they use elements from many and also now and then drop in sections with non-metal genres like the bossa nova bit in this song. But the two main influences, as Jinjer themselves has said, are (1) progressive metal that characterize large parts of their music with all the time signature switches that you noticed and many other intelligently playful changes in the rhythms, melodies and other things, and (2) extreme metal with growls and very heavy guitars that are used in parts of most songs, so the least wrong genre name for them might be progressive [extreme] metal...

      Very interesting comment you made. Since making this reaction video I have gone back and watched quite a few times with lyrics turned on. Very impactful video. I am pretty forward in this channel about how I mainly talk about the instrumental side of what I am listening to. I think I even mentioned in this video that I was aware that some of the message was lost on me. That happens on FIRST time listens. Did you catch more lyric content and meaning than me on your first listen? Probably. Was this a waste? No. I have no clue why that would be your conclusion and then to type it as if to exclaim that discovering this song was a bad thing. UA-cam people in the comments are a special type. Record yourself reacting to music on a first time hearing and see how much you catch.
