    I've become a hug fan of Bardstown... but at $160 SRP, I will need to pass on this one. 😉

    I liked Amrut Fusion. As a scotch lover 1st this sounds like something I'd enjoy. At the price though I'll wait till it hits Costco @ $120 😂

    Their stuff is ridiculously over priced. Don’t care it is. That’s why it sits on shelves collecting dust

    Should have just sold the blend without the Amrut cask finish, called it Disco 12, and sold it for $30-$40 less.

    Just picked this up 30 minutes ago for the $159.99 SRP. It is fantastic and can’t wait to see how it is in a couple weeks! I love the Amrut single malts. I’ll buy another when this one is gone.

    Solid review and i agree with you about this being a soon to be shelf turd. 160 bones for a malt collaboration from India!? Bad decision BBC. Times are getting tougher and only the FOMO freaks and noobs will splurge on this bad idea. Meanwhile I'm in the flat lining bourbon real world looking for a Beam 7 year for under 30 smacks. Cheers, y'all!

    Love the smoke, Octomore, Ardbeg, Port Charlotte and the like. Yea I’m gonna cop for sure! Thx. Are there any burbon finished in any peated cask you know of?

  • @apeekintime

    These will rot on shelves...like most of the collabs. I think anything with the words single malt kind of fails hard over in the bourbon aisle so these will end up going on sale at many locations. Another commentor mentioned Costco and yeah, If they show up at Costco I'd probably jump on it. The $160 price isn't bad, but it's steep for any bottle of whiskey that isn't on a highly allocated list.
    I almost pulled the trigger on one today in a $300 bundle and it came with a bottle of Michters Barrel Strength Rye... that was only a bit above MSRP for both bottles but wasn't temping enough.
    Was odd that the shop bundled a newer release with the Michter's instead of a store pick or something they might have more trouble selling. If the bundle was their store pick of Woodford Double Oak and the Michters for $200 I would probably have pulled the trigger.

    No knock on this particular bourbon and I know "Bardstown Bourbon" puts out some good blends and quality product (and has distilled now for about 8 years now), however we should all have seen this coming. When finished whiskey became a very significant portion of the current whiskey talk track, it was a harbinger that we had reached the peak of the "bourbon bubble". We now have many of the producers (distillers and rectifiers) chasing that next new finish to cash in the next trends. When just straight whiskey isn't the main talking point, we've lost the market. I hate to say it, but we are likely to see many (mainly rectifiers) go by the wayside over the next 5 years or so as people tire of this finish and that finish and the next hot finish.
    This will have a domino effect. Rectifiers (I know they hate that moniker) will go by the wayside. This will affect the true distillers that will no longer have that source to sell in to. This may cause a few distillers to see hard times. Now, the big boys will be OK, but some of the smaller distillers may suffer and even the big boys who have ramped up production lines and more importantly rickhouse space, will see excess capacity.
    Result? Not necessarily a repeat of the lowlights of the 70s-90s, but certainly a pronounced dip. Many rectifiers go away, some smaller distillers either get bought for pennies on the dollar or go away, and large distillers cut back. Your mom and pop farmers (you know...the folks that grown the corn, wheat, rye, and barley), tourism, and all that trickle down suffers in KY and TN. BUT....maybe those of us that enjoy straight whiskies and really enjoy what the classic distillers put out will see a) higher ages more readily available b) semi-allocated bottles available on shelves c) lower prices. No, you won't see PvW on the shelf...sorry. BUT, maybe we enter a new 15 year cycle like we had from late 90s to early 2010s. Maybe. Then we can start it all over again in 2040 when the next generation discovers bourbon.
    So that's my take. Not to take away from Jason's review as frankly Jason is one of the tops out there in my book. I just hope we can get back to a market that the normal buyer can buy some great straight whiskey without having to watch silly boards or camp to get a sought after bottles.

    Ya think they'll see Amrut and assume there's some funky spices in there? Probably. No, the real issue is the high prices like the Discovery, Origin and other prem rels I see sitting on shelves.

    Bardstown is the new king. The prices are a bit rough though to be honest but I understand the partnership bottles cost alot more to produce. I feel like they are only worth $120 a bottle, not $170 or whatever it is now. Excited to put out a video on my tour and barrel pick for a Bardstown infrared cherry wood toasted rye soon.

    I picked this up couple days back for $150 and literally had a 1 ounce pour and already considering a back up bottle because it’s not damn good. If it sits on the shelves, I’ll definitely get a back up. Cheers Jason.

    I’ll be lucky if this one is $160 when it lands on my area. It may be $190 I think because the goose island collab is $150. Amrut casks are probably more expensive. Depending on price I may get one.

    Nice review! Local store owner friend gave me a 2oz sample today and I had a little pour tonight. Sweet and a little spice and smoke! I really dislike peet flavor and this is a nice slightly charred smoke flavor! Store owner friend will let me have a bottle for 110.00 so maybe I’ll get a bottle. Easy to sip!

    Fascinating product and review. While I did enjoy a bottle of Amrut some years ago, based on the description, this doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Partly, it's that I've not found any bouryes which I really cared for. And, I would't think that the Amrut casks would necessarily have a desirable influence on the blend. However, your review has caught my attention. On a separate but somewhat related note, in the past(when old MGP was plentiful), I've experimented blending scotch and bourbon. One of my favorite blends was Old Bones(10 year old MGP) + Port Charlotte 10. I think I did maybe a teaspoon or so of PC10 with a couple oz of Old Bones. It was amazing. If you're going to influence bourbon with anything Scotch related, then I think you need to go with peat. Bourbon is already sweet. It doesn't need more sweetness added. IMO, that's why sherry influencing bourbon tends to not improve it much. Rye has much better chemistry for fruity finishes. I think most of us just want a good bourbon to be left alone. Just give us those 10~14 year bourbons on their own. Don't finish it, don't water it down, and, for God's sake, please don't chill filter it...just bottle it(or, blend the bourbons and bottle it).

    Jason - curious if you've tried either the Canongate 11 or 14? Heaven Hill Bourbon aged in Scotch casks in Scotland. Tough to find, but one of the most interesting flavor profiles I've had.

    I`d buy in a heartbeat as a lover of bourbon & whisky. Amrut have produced stellar bottles over the years so I ain`t scared! Jason if you see Paul John Oloroso or PX on your travels buy it as it`s another Indian distiller worth trying, I know you enjoy what sherry butts impart.

    The Foursquare and Plantation collabs are still available in the Charlotte area along with the previous Disco. I do enjoy Amrut on its own. I wonder how well these "special" releases are selling nationally now. WTMK just announced a "special" 10 year rye that comes in a Campari cardboard box for $275. I think the jig is up perhaps. 🤘🥃

    I agree. This one is going to sit on the shelves. Indian whiskey sits on the shelves at my Total Wine because of the price. I bought a couple of bottles years ago and I enjoyed them, but that’s the issue is that it’s very expensive. Some people may think that it’s sitting on the shelf because it’s not good.

    • @apeekintime
      @apeekintime 3 місяці тому +1

      I'm seeing the lower tier allocated stuff start to sit on shelves for longer and longer periods. In my area ECBP, Larceny, 1792 BIB, and 1792 Full Proof are pretty much available at every store and just 3 months ago you had to win those bottles in raffles. Higher MSRP bottles are also moving pretty slow. Took a full day for my local store to sell two cases of bookers and half a case of Little Book... When batch 1 came out earlier in the year they had 6 cases and they sold them all in 1 hour. The hobby is slowing down - thank goodness.
      If you live in some of the Western states you will also notice Weller products starting to hit shelves and not move immediately like they did a few months back. That's causing the 107, FP and 12 year to quickly decline in price. Stuff is hitting market in bigger numbers and enthusiasts are scaling back on spend. Doubt we ever see Pappy sitting on shelves for less than secondary but we are quickly approaching a world where most bottles over $100 just won't fly with consumers.

    • @TheReal_DeanD
      @TheReal_DeanD 3 місяці тому

      @@apeekintime hey man. Thanks for replying and such detail. I just went on a hunt for Bardstown series 11 and saw what you saw in one of my local stores. 1792 bottled in bond, full proof, eagle rare, bookers 2024 01, larceny barrel proof B24 just sitting there on the shelf. People are really beginning to pair back or they’ve just had enough. I agree will never see Pappy back on the shelf at retail, but I’m hoping this trend continues.
