We explain how the 10xx and 11xx models of PS4 run hotter and the fan runs louder than people think it should. Some of the things that commonly cause a PS4 to overheat are:
-The cooling fan
-Dried out thermal paste
-A PS4 that has been assembled incorrectly
-A very dirty PS4
A PS4 that is actually overheating will: Beep loudly, turn on the red light (where the white light normally is) and then shut down. Many people think their console is overheating just because it feels hot and it's loud...but that's not overheating.
We start with a PS4 that has been partially disassembled then we remove the metal plate with the heat sink attached to it. We then show how to clean the heat sink fins properly...something that most people miss. We then explain and show how to remove and clean the cooling fan.
The video wraps up by showing how to put the parts back in that were removed.

I kept mine on window ledge with window open, until neighbours complained, and local airport took me to court as the pilots couldn't concentrate when testing the jet engines. so I took it apart and now run my 12 room central heating radiotors off it. It's that loud, I'm colour-blind from it

Hey Steve, just want to say thanks for your videos. My ps4 Pro was over heating and from watching your videos I got the confidence to do the full teardown, replace thermal pads and paste and clean the heat sink.... The ps4 Pro looked clean right up until the heat sink came out... Then, wow... Like a curtain of dust across the fan side... Now it runs like its not even on. So thanks! And to everyone not sure they can do this job you can! , just follow it step by step and have right tools... Mainly torx 8 security screwdriver

What brand spray air did you use and what brand thermal paste did you use?

Just took the plunge to fix my sons PS4 Pro that had started to sound like a light aircraft taking off.... tbh I thought I would break it, loose a screw or snap something.... following your videos I managed to strip it down, clean out the heatsink and put it all back together in under an hour.... afterwards I couldn’t believe that it actually turned on!!! And it’s god damn silent!!!

thanks, cleaned mine and didn't clean the heat sink so no change what so ever this vid really helped, because the heat sink was totally blocked with dust and the obvious cause of the overheating. top man much appreciated.

When I start playing any game, my fan instantly becomes loud. Is that bad and what should I do.
Kaiheps its not bad, its normal, but try keep it on a flat smooth surface and not enclosed in a tv cabinet etc. Just vacuum the vents as much as you can
Get a small fan, put it right behind the glossy part of the PS4 (left side). It'll help suck air out of your PS4

There is another possibility that we all should take note.
APU of the PS4 can be bulging and not flat as it should be. This reduced further the thermal transfer rate to the heatsink and potentially overheat below its official ambient temperature max. tolerance.
Look out that bulging Apu when you have the chance to disassemble it for replacing the thermal paste, the bios battery and general cleaning.

Great video I think I’ll do a PlayStation here or there from inspiration from you. Question, The “graphic chips”get real hot. I have felt them directly what could that be? It causes overheating and shut down.(new fan and cleaned)

I'm literally about to shoot my ps4 because of that annoying sound, I'm just trying to play Ghost of Tsushima since I just got it today, but it keeps shutting down not even 10 minutes into the first part.

It first used to just blink the blue light than goes off without turning fan on. But after i changed the Power Supply adapter. It kept blinking the blue light than finally red than off it goes with the fan turning on this time..
Than i released the problem was the power adapter and the heat sink too.

Thank you for the tutorial, when I tore mine apart I found that the thermal paste was completely dried out and actually gone from the top of the processor. My PS4 wasn't shutting off and telling me it was over heating until I tore it apart to clean it, so hopefully it is just due to the thermal paste, but I will also be paying attention to the other points you made this time. Plus it doesn't help my machine living in Arizona. Again, thank you...

I know this video is old, but I might as well toss the question anyway. Right now my PS4 has an issue wherein it just turns off/crashes. What I mean is it'll happen without warning where the picture on screen will just start flickering black, lose signal, then the console will beep and finally turn off. Is it overheating? is it just dirty (haven't opened it up at all), or is it a goner at this point?

Take it apart. and take the disc reader out. The coin should fall out from there. If not disassemble the disk reader

You don't need to remove it unless you want to clean that as well.

After doing a washer fix from my PS4 from turning off and on and finally getting it to work I ran a game and it just went straight into overheating and shut itself off. Should I just send it away for repairs, Or just get a new one?

Hmmm...There's just no way for me to know without seeing it. I'm assuming you cleaned it good and replaced the thermal paste.

I'm just now starting to get these overheating warnings...after watching this video, I'm sure it's due to a bunch of dust on the inside. I'll turn on my PS4 & it won't even be an hour yet when I start getting the warnings so the PS4 is never really hot to the touch. However, I don't wanna open this up myself as I fear I'll just mess up the internals

I opened up the PS4 to clean up the fan and everything and as soon as I turn it on, after 5 min it turns red and shuts off. I don't know what to do at this point should I go somewhere to get it fixed or get a new one?
It's just overheating...let's not get to excited here, there's no need to buy a new one when you have one that's perfectly fixable.

How do you feel about copper shims bridging the gap beat the apu and the heat sink with layers or mx 4 thermal paste in between? I've been wondering if that would help
I use a long barber brush for my heat sink and use an actual air compressor that blows all of the dust out of the console and the power supply unit, the tear down is a cake walk but my console is just loud

This is a common issue with older ps4 models. Take your playstation outside. Go start your car and pop the hood. Get your jumper cables and attach the red cable to the positive terminal (the side with the "+" on it). Then connect the black cable to the negative terminal (this side will be marked with a "-" sign). Now attach each cable to the corresponding ear. Have a friend hit the gas a few times while you hold the ps4 with both hands.
Should run like it's fresh outta the factory! Good luck and be sure you record a video to post on youtube to assist anyone else who may encounter a similar issue! Hope this helps!!

Wow, thanks for this vid. So many times i have taken my PS4 apart and cleaned, applied paste etc, and never once lifted that plate that holds the heat sink. Boy was it dirty!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Much worse than your example ps4. No wonder it kept overheating. Thanks again!

why does my ps4 only overheat and shut of during game play and not while using Hulu or Netflix for hours on end? I think I can clean it out myself but just curious.
gameplay is much more demanding on the console than simply watching Netflix. fix it by taking of the bottom cover, by removing screws in the back, and clean the fan. if you want to go the extra mile replace the thermal paste, use a good quality one like AS5.

2 PS4's I've had, were fixed by completely opening them following ifixit's guide (Fan replacement guide), and when i saw the thermal paste, it was thick, dry and gloopy and didn't seem very conductive. Replaced it with NT-H1 paste and got it back together, I never even heard the fans again. I don't understand why Sony skimped out on such a cheap thermal paste.
my ps4 is literally a perfect candidate for all but one of the problems you mentioned, the thermal paste probs needs changing, its probably super dirty because i havent cleaned it that deep inside and im afraid ima have to send this one to repair there are just too many things to be done and i dont have the screwdrivers for it

I have cleaned my ps4 slim and applied new thermal paste and also installed a new hard drive but the fan still a bit too loud
my ps4 stopped transmitting video while I was playing with a loud humming sound. had the constant blue light of death for a few days until I opened and tightened the apu down. everything cut back on for about 10-15 min before no video and humming again.
checked the thermal paste, old and crusty; opened and cleaned all that was in this video and reapplied new paste.

Nope...not on the PS4 fan. The plastic is fused to the metal.
