I remember it being explained like an “art deco” era, where for a short period of time a lot of new things had that look before it faded away with later design trends.

Personally I love that idea of TOS being an 'art deco' period, where everything had this unique style for a short amount of time... it explains Dax's line about how she lived 'through that time' and loved the old style. The tech itself was still advanced, but covered up in a more streamlined style for the era.

As a kid, I had this idea that 2260s ships and technology looked so retro because it was all designed by aliens with a different design aesthetic to humans. All still hugely advanced tech, but it just appeared retro to us.

      Yes _indeed_ .
A SIMPLE ALLUSION to the Design Aesthetic, something that comes and goes as societal FADS , the BEST ones becoming "trends" , but even THOSE are only temporary.
A Minimalist Design Aesthetic is NOT something unheard of elsewhere in society. Shopped at IKEA lately ?

I wish they actually cared about reconciling their aesthetic with the 50 years rich tapestry that came before them. But Alex Kurtzman has no love for that incredibly cohesive world. I wish your theory was true, but they just don’t put that much thought into what they are doing.

I really hope Pike is bisexual as had been suggested so we can see his true masculinity shine through as he is open to relationships with anyone and everyone. It would also be cool if Kirk had a 'phase' of discovering himself and had a brief fling with Pike. This I feel embodies the root characteristics of western society.

Starfleet did what the Colonials did in Battlestar Galactica. Pre-Discovery canon said it was because of the Romulan War. Post-Discovery canon can just say it was because of Control.

I was going to leave the same comment. This is a better explaination. Maybe not the networking part, but needing to use more analog and isolated systems. Just to keep an reminants out.
One of the things we've seen very little in Trek is hacking into systems, which should be way more common. And this might be why.
Becuase the lesson was already learned. And they had a period of rethinking how they approach systems and integrate them.

The Axanar fan film proves you can make state of the art modern episodes and be visuly faithful to the original series. All too often egoes in control believe they have to show they can be more eye popping than any that came before them.

I remember the Axanar trailer and it was pretty exciting... I agree, I wish the new producers didn't approach Star Trek with the idea that it needs to be 'fixed' to be more like Star Wars or be more exciting or visually impressive... doing so changes the flavour of the show.

I kinda like to just think of the TOS look as being an ultra refined version of cutting edge 'Disco era' tech. Like in TOS everything's been smoothed over and made to look super sleek and stylish to the point of looking simple and basic. Kinda like how the interior of a Tesla is so sleek it actually looks basic, despite being totally cutting edge, whilst some cars from the 80s look kinda sci-fi and futuristic despite being really lo-tech.

    • @StarTrekTheory

@@chillvid-1933 Got to say, one thing I don't like about Discovery and the new Picard is how they are just minor projections of where/who we are today (e.g. food printer replicators, people doing drugs and swearing) rather than where the original TOS/TNG felt like evolved versions of us (us as we want to be in the future beyond where we are currently). 😂

      @@StarTrekTheory 100% Agree.
The beauty about TNG was it was so futuristic cos it almost wasn't futuristic, it was like post-everything. In the way that design folds back into the background, the more advanced it gets. Think smartphones, they're basically just a screen now, and things get as minimalistic as possible. There's that zen of making technology natural and almost imperceiveable.
It really stresses me out that Discovery has all this flashing shit everywhere and ridiculous flying holograms and shit, that's gonna make it look so dated. TNG still holds up in a large part, perhaps ironically.
Some might say, yeah it's just budgetary restrictions and others might point to the bits of SFX that DO make it look dated. But the point is, all that shit was sort of background to a thought provoking, wisdom-searching narrative journey.
STD-Pic's story telling reflects its aesthetic - loud "in yo face" and painfully obvious to the point of cringe. There are no real moral quandaries, no ambiguity, just no real intelligence overall.
I know a lot of people might see Star Trek's use of Classical music, and literature references as being some dusty old bastion of the Gr8 Whyt Male but the *tone* just felt so much more refined and cosy.
It's like the difference between spending an evening with your best friends with good food having amazing conversations all night to being at a shit house party and a stranger who comes up to you and insists you know them, shouting at you about themselves for 93 seconds that feel like 93 hours.
      God I miss Star Trek.

    • @pohkeee

Star Wars started production with the intention of sequels, then went on to prequels. The original Star Trek barely hung on for a few years, and when the movies started few truly believed it would continue further, so why not dazzle the audience with new production abilities. And the spits and sputters continue with each new iteration, so of course trying to pull together any semblance of continuity is troublesome.

    • @DennisSheltonjr
      @DennisSheltonjr 3 роки тому +1

@@pohkeee The logic that you're using here doesn't reference my comment though, as Star wars is always embraced the Canon and the way things were designed. We understand that it was designed originally with additional movies that were supposed to happen etc etc. But as each new movie came out with future technology and advancements they never changed the way things looked they always embraced the basic way that everything was in their universe. Whereas Star trek every single version no matter what timeline it is in or time. Should I say always has better technology than the original series. Or the series that it's supposed to be happening before. it just makes absolutely no sense why something that takes place 10 years before the original series or 20 years before the original series would have better looking technology and prettier displays. whereas even in Star wars something that takes place 30 years later still has the same iconic look and feel to it. Same push buttons same lame looking displays same lame looking targeting.
To say that Star trek was never meant to have any sequels or anything is trivial because the fact that it does have them is evidence that there should be homage paid to the original in some way shape or form. This channel in this video shows a realistic way to blend it all together and make it all make perfect sense.

There's absolutely NO NEED to "explain" the return to the OS timeline. Just use some good HARD WRITING SKILL, and work it all in gradually as an emerging aesthetic as the Design of the Star-ship / Human Ergonomic Interface evolves in the period between Pike and Kirk. DONE . Remember, the UNIFORMS Pre-Kirk (Cage/Menagerie) Changed, but there's really no need to "explain" _THAT_ stylistic migration.
There's no need for a GALAXY-WIDE LOSS of ALL SPECIES Engineering Design Data as a "Re-Boot Mechanism" to satisfy this part of the fan-child need for MASSIVE over-arching "EXPLANATIONS" of anything they're uncomfortable with. Just some GOOD STRONG STORY TELLING and it can be written in as an organic change in Design Preference over the period in question.
      Consider-
Such a Galaxy-Wide LOSS of CULTURAL and Engineering "Memory" would plunge the entire GALAXY into a LONG period of Pre-technology darkness, ENDING the whole "Trek Concept" . No, REALLY the idea just doesn't/wouldn't work .

So with this theory, the actual retro look would have had that had started before Pike actually. So how far back do we go? There was a pre-pike era, with Captain Robert April. Did it happen just after the Enterprise era,?

  • @kevsnoop81
    @kevsnoop81 3 роки тому +2

I honestly think all of this is unnecessary. They used the video from "The Cage" as a flashback for Pike which made it canon. Even though those event were only 3-4 years prior, the look is obviously 50 yrs older. But I didn't require an explanation for the aesthetics. They even incorporated elements from the TOS Enterprise set into Pike's Enterprise to kind of bridge the aesthetic gap. I think if they can integrate elements of TOS look without totally copying it all together, then that's enough for me. So I say there's no need for an explanation.

I agree, as a lifelong Trekkie from the late 1960's as a toddler watching TOS with my dad. The producers (Bad Robot, et al), have no problem throwing away established cannon with the baby and the bathwater. While your theory is a grounded way to "get back" to what should be. Current showrunners believe in updating for the sake of NEW viewership. They are really not in the business of fan-service. If it were, Brannon Braga or even Seth Mcfarlane as show runners, they would have gone for a more retro look because they understand where Trek came from. This is why Orville is far superior to the latest incarnations of Trek.

Adam Nierenberg they are getting better and learning. Discovery showed unaltered clips from the Cage as a flashback. Picard had digital models and flashbacks of the Enterprise D. Discovery season 3 trailers have unaltered Star Trek aliens. I think it will just be a refit and switch to buttons because of control but on the inside it is more advanced. Also maybe they could use CGI to have Peck morph into Nimoy slowly but idk if that kind of cgi is possible yet. Lower decks had a cameo of unaltered tos ships so I think they are changing their approach to visual canon due to fan backlash.

I'm late to the party on this video, but I would argue that the TOS enterprise is actually more futuristic looking than TMP. While being more colorful, its controls theoretically bridge the push-button designs of TMP-era interfaces with the "dynamic" touch-screen interfaces of TNG. They are solid, non-moving (no mechanics) buttons that provide tactile feedback, but are likely user-configurable as push-buttons, sliders and pots, showing their purpose and markings within the controls. As to why the technology seemed to get "bulkier", it can be argued (using "Force of Nature" as a basis) that subspace interference in system operations began occurring at warp 6, required an equipment re-design to shield the effected systems. This would have been resolved by TMP era. Just some thoughts. - BT

I had the same thoughts as Melkur1985 that the retro look was dependant on which species was the senior Admiral of the Fleet and thus it was down to these Aliens who were responsible for pushing their own design ethics. After their attempt at the retro style other alien members of Starfleet moved away from it and we get a more advanced look, however, the series still has issues with the familiar aliens changing too much and no change in the timeline can have that big an effect unless you go back to the dawn of time and change every species before they even hatch. The changes should have been less subtle and the uniforms need to be brought in line with "The Cage" era. Then there's the problem with "the Bestest Evah!" who seems to be the only person every episode who knows everything and wants to steal the limelight away from the rest of the crew. The latest episode is the first time everyone has made themselves useful other than the mirror universe. Too much waterworks from a crew which is supposed to be the military wing of The Federation and finally, The Temporal Prime Directive! Federation Time Ships such as the Aeon are supposed to fix temporal incursions and this should have been done when Nero changed the future of Vulcan. To annihilate an entire planet and a large portion of the Vulcan species warrants a visit by the Temporal Police and whether this is a branch of Section 31 is anyone's guess but if a new series revolving around it is finally done questions will be asked even more about why they haven't fixed this very relevant break in the timeline.

It's a plausible theory considering they went way polished and technological after the original series and that's just the way it turned out to be. But one thing I noticed in my decades of watching the original series is that mankind seems to have only just gotten to the point they are at by TOS, even mentioning that not long previously they didn't even have view screens. It was pulp fiction that was done way better than it's predecessors and is meant to have a lonely feel way out there in space. To me, they never seemed to be all that far along in their technology. Of course, when they started making the movies and following tv series, naturally they started ramping up the tech that they finally had the budget for. Just my thoughts and observations, I know everyone has their own.

I think the design is a result of the need for easy serviceability. Analog relays, physical switches and analog gauges require no semiconductors, can be easily built and are easily replaced with minimal need for networked updates across multiple modules and nodes. A highly automated central computer reduces the need for complex inputs and the ship could be operated with a minimal operating interface. This would be vital for a ship that is away for extended periods of time.

Different look due to altered time line that REBOOTED Trek after the events of First Contact! The time line was NOT restored, just realterd, to approximate the timeline the Enterprise came from! ST Enterprise FOLLOWED this altered timeline! Cochrane was exposed to 24C ships based on HIS warp engine designs, and that in turn influenced his later ship designs, and hence, Discovery's a century later!
But HAVING to 'dumb' down Star Fleet and other's ships & tech down to purge a rogue AI code makes perfect sense. Sending all ships etc basically BACK to manual control!
BSG did this to avoid CYLON hacking of their ships and defense systems that WERE all computerised, so the Kobol humans went retro to manual systems to AVOID being commandeered by Cylon AI!

Yes, that's another good theory about Enterprise essentially being a branched off parallel line already, with Discovery just being the natural evolution of that timeline. I had also thought about that and was planning to make a video on that and the 'parallel' verse idea in general. Even then, assuming the parallel line, it could still be nice for Strange New Worlds to somehow drift, at least partially, back towards a TOS retro style with an event like purging the AI control they introduced in Disco. This was very interesting. My own "pet theory" is as follows: Discovery, and all Star Trek going forward from here is indeed in a new timeline, created by the events of the Temporal Cold War in Enterprise. The Xindi War would've given rise to advances in technology sooner than we saw them in the TOS timeline. Indeed, the Enterprise itself in Discovery seems to have design elements we didn't see until Enterprise's retrofit in ST:TMP. In this way, the TOS timeline remains intact, with TNG, DS9, Voyager and Picard following. Discovery leads to not only a "different" Pike-era Enterprise, but entirely new Kirk-era adventures when that time rolls around (if the producers decide to go there). While the ideas in this video are appealing, it might be nice to have a solution that can be applied again and again as time marches on and all of the shows, including Discovery and SNW, eventually start to show their age (the datapads and computer terminals in TNG are already looking obsolete to anyone today who owns a laptop and a smartphone). The fluidity and, indeed, the fragility of time is an easier explanation for the technological changes we see, rather than endlessly having to come up with reasons for old tech in the future, while still retaining old shows as canon at the same time. And now that Discovery has jumped 900 years into their own future, I'm sure I'll be amused when even those far future technologies are rendered obsolete, here in the "real" 21st century! :D

After seeing Discovey season 3 now I totally agree about the alternate timeline... and I’m also starting to wonder if the start of the new timeline branch was actually first contact? I.e. that movie created an alternate universe where zefram Cochrane knew about the future and Borg danger and accelerated ship building leading to the nx01 faster than the original Kirk prime timeline, and everything you mentioned followed on from that - with more advanced technology as a result? I’m hoping to do a video on that soon, thx for the great comment! 👍

@@StarTrekTheory - I've never counted First Contact as the beginning of the new timeline for the simple reason that it is referenced by Seven on "Voyager". One could argue that Star Trek has "rolling waves" of temporal alteration constantly occurring, rippling forward in time from their trigger event and creating new futures, which are whatever shows are currently in production. Note that this is not a license to ignore canon; for the sake of our collective sanity, events *must* unfold in a similar pattern in any viable new timeline ("viable" because there would be timelines where the very universe was destroyed, or Control destroys all organic life, or the Borg overrun the galaxy, etc.).

In my head canon, the events of First Contact altered first contact and therefore altered the future time line. Enterprise then becomes the first series set in the altered timeline, on a ship that drew it's inspiration from Zefram Cochrane's encounters with Picard and the Enterprise crew. In this altered timeline, instead of the Vulcans being the advanced species that inspires humanity, and first contact with an alien species is the big event, that's all overshadowed by Us, not aliens, but a group of future (mostly) Earth humans who were dropped into the same time frame. In that altered timeline, technologies are shunted backwards and are discovered earlier than they were in the prime timeline, and this effect would be furthered by future, new trips into the past that cause new contamination events, like the early discovery of transparent aluminium, and of course the early arrival of Borg nanobots on Earth. We saw this demonstrated in Yesterday's Enterprise, with one seemingly insignificant change to the timeline sets us on a completely different path. Of course, you could just get your panties in a bunch because iPads are more advanced than anything Kirk had on board the Enterprise, so therefore iPads cannot exist, but I prefer to remember that it's only a tv show, and I don't want them to limit their vision based on what couldn't be done or foreseen in the 1960s.

I like this theory also... I had a similar idea and was planning to do a multiverse style theory video about it. It's pretty clear that Enterprise is on the same timeline as Discovery (i.e. projecting out Enterprise's tech out 100 years probably results in Discovery and the Kelvin universe level of technology), but the rest of trek makes sense from the standpoint that there are multiple timelines and parallel universes. There was an episode of TNG called Parallels which explains it perfectly, and overall it makes a lot of sense to think of Disco and Picard as being in a parallel universe to the original Trek. First Contact being the divergence point is definitely a good idea, but I was also wondering about the original supernova event from Star Trek 2009 - i.e. supposedly according to JJ, the timeline diverged before Nero went back in time because the supernova itself created the black hole that connected to a point further back in time which could have disrupted the timeline in some way before Nero's ship even went into it.

@@StarTrekTheory All the shows use time travel, so technically none of the shows end up in the same time line they started in. The Ent D originally blew up due to a collision with the Bozeman, Kirk would have died by exploding tribble if Ben Sisko wasn't there to save him, etc etc. I had actually hoped that the Picard series would have dealt with this, and by that time many Starfleet personnel would be suffering a sort of Mandela effect/Marty McFly effect due to a time travel incident that had changed history for everyone in the galaxy, except for the time travellers, and Picard and his crew returned from the events of First Contact to find themselves in a different timeline with a different history to the one they remember, and technology more advanced than they expect. Mind you, I'd also enjoy watching the story involving the Nexus remnant of Kirk, having lived out his life in every possible way to see every possible outcome, enlists the remnants of Picard and Guinan to help him leave the Nexus, and set young Kirk on a path not chosen and give him a better life. It would be a great way to introduce the new Kirk actor too.

Glad to see someone else mentioning this. I think it's pretty simple, First Contact changes the timeline because Zephram Cochrane gets a look at the Enterprise-E, and maybe even collects some data as the Phoenix flies by before it's first flight. After all, his warp ship would have been equipped with lots of instruments to measure warp fields and collect other information relevant to the test flight. So whatever fields and whatnot the Enterprise was emitting, Cochrane might have recorded some of it.
It's already established in ENT that Cochrane was around for at least the start of the development of the warp 5 engine. So he likely made some leaps in progress that influenced Henry Archer and together they developed an engine that was probably faster than anything in that time period in the 'original timeline'. The episode 'Regeneration' clearly established that ENT exists in a modified timeline tied to First Contact, though one can argue predestination paradox rather than a divergent timeline. Plus, the NX-01 is never mentioned before ENT, or shown anywhere else, despite it's historical importance and connection to future Enterprises.
From there, I'd say the Franklin, Kelvin, and Discovery are all part of a contiguous altered timeline. The intervention from Nero merely caused a split from this parallel and already more advanced timeline. So even though the Kelvin and it's shuttles probably got enough data from the Narada to cause some huge technological leaps, the Kelvin Timeline would have just looked like it does in Disco and not TOS, had the Narada not intervened. It's also difficult to reconcile the differences between Disco and the original timeline because sweeping Discovery's existence under the rug doesn't fix everything. Without getting into a whole list of differences (and I'm somewhat ignoring aesthetic changes because it is a real-world production), there is a big difference in speed. Displays on the Disco bridge show that the ship's warp factor and corresponding lightspeed multiplier are consistent with the TNG scale and not TOS. However, this could be more consistent with a timeline that had faster engines earlier on...
I don't think it ends there though... I think everything after First Contact gradually changed, so that even Insurrection would have been technically a part of this new timeline, but by then the changes would have leveled off a lot more to still resemble the original timeline, but you could probably spin it a few different ways. Still, I think LDS and especially Picard are not the same timeline as TNG. There are some issues with this of course, like having TNG warp speeds in the TOS era would mean that by the time of Picard, they'd have significantly better technology, even despite any leveling off in changes. This theory may not be the best solution, but I think it works better than trying to reconcile everything into one timeline.

In the original series Pike was portrayed by two different actors (Jeffrey Hunter in flashback scenes and Sean Kenney in the wheelchair) in the only two part episode of original Trek. At the time The Menagerie was conceived by Gene Roddenberry, the production budget was overstretched, so he came up a way to make a cheap episode reusing the original pilot film.

The difference between the look of Kirk era and others is simply that TOS was shot in the 1960's with limited budget and film production technology (but great stories and characters) and anything past that is an increase film tech. From Enterprise (NX -01) and on, Trek makers simply chose to do prequels with an updated look. From Discovery era on... they chose not to follow established cannon characters, optimism and episodic series format. I personally wish they would have not done prequels of TOS and instead made new Trek happening after the events of Nemesis film. This would give them creative license to change the look and feel of the future Trek universe. My opinion is that Discovery is a disservice to TOS era. Just my 2 cents. I am OK if you like it and glad that Trek is continuing.

I think the retro look and the way they made it fit to a modern style look of the enterprise for the new strange new worlds season is the way to go as it still keeps the look and feel's like its a star trek show mixing in the old and new in a more believable and balanced way for the new and old trek fans. This is what we expected the star trek show to be from the start but instead they went with a completely opposite and that is what's making discovery a failure not just the story's and the actors but its not really feeling like i am watching star trek or resemble it in anyway it like there just using the brand of what star trek was and just putting in reference to it thinking its going to be star trek. Why The Mandalorian got it right from the start they knew what star wars is and kept every thing the way it should be the look feel and new character with back story's and with a good writing for the show and episodic with different story's each week to tell and it doesn't drag out and make more sense in the story.s there telling. Discovery has nothing like that and this is what star trek was an episodic story telling with new adventures and now the team behind the discovery show has just beginning to see this old approach simple story telling and why there doing Strange New Worlds exactly like that. I think they learned the hard way and realized the way there discovery show was the wrong approach and look to what we as trek fans wanted from the franchise. Its only the new younger generation who has never watched or grow up with star trek likes this take as they don't understand true star trek and that's another reason why The Mandalorian is such a huge success with the young and old as it didn't change what was star wars at its core and it would introduced them to all the original star wars from the passed and keeping the franchise alive and even bigger than before. The whole thing is its called VISIONARY and i am afraid to say that's lacking for this team going ahead with star trek. Unless they start doing strange new worlds the way they promises use by going back to old trek original style and retro look and at the same time bring it to a modern style feel and look to every thing

My grievance is that people tend to confuse esthetics with functionality. If it looks a certain way, it must be more or less advanced. Does it really matter whether you push a touchscreen key or a physical button, if it does the exact same thing? Is a 2020 hairstyle somehow “more advanced” than a 1960’s hairstyle? No, of course not. It’s just a different style.

    • @StarTrekTheory
      @StarTrekTheory  4 роки тому +2

Totally agree... I always assumed the TOS was functionally very advanced but just had that retro aesthetic and look from that period of the 2260s. Updating it to be holograms doesn’t make it more advanced... and actually keeping a consistent visual timeline and aesthetic for the various eras of Trek is much more preferable.

    • @MoonjumperReviews

@Star Trek Theory - Absolutely. And furthermore, when the TOS Defiant showed up in the Mirror NX-01 era, that TOS Connie looked absolutely credible flying side by side with an NX-class and they absolutely sold the idea that it was a century more advanced, a century more powerful-and they did it playing it mostly straight. Soval was not laughing when the Defiant blew them out of the sky. It was played straight and it played dark. The DS9 episode was a little more tongue in cheek, but both of these episodes reaffirmed in canon that, yes, this is what that era looked like. It looked like a retro-futuristic 1960’s, not the 1990’s or early 2000’s. And why should it? What’s so futuristic about 21st century touchscreens (which have been around since the 1980’s)? I used a touchscreen to order food at EPCOT Center in 1982. Big whoop. The “jelly bean” controls on a TOS Connie seem to work like touch sensitive crystals, not unlike the Kryptonian crystal controls seen in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. That seems a lot more futuristic and “out there” than a modern day touchscreen. The DS9 episode even reaffirmed the retro-futuristic 60’s beehive hairstyles.
The missed opportunity here was to do Discovery as a serious period piece with a massive budget to do it right and credibly and stylishly. If the 2260’s looks like the future of the 1960’s, then the 2250’s should have looked like the future of the 1950’s. Imagine the incredible architecture we could have seen, props, clothing and hairstyles, living areas not dissimilar to Morbius’ home in Forbidden Planet. This could have been a production designer’s dream job-something that would have stunned audiences with its immersive world building. I’m not talking about “cardboard sets.” I’m talking about going all out and embracing this retro-future with the massive budget they had-and wasted. What a missed opportunity.

Omg I thought the exact same about the series period look, they totally had a missed opportunity doing something unique and pre 2260s style - showing how the TOS era developed. It could have been visually distinctive doing a 1950s era inspired style projected into the future. Totally agree! If I was running Trek that’s what I would have done and made sure to treat each era as it’s own period style. 😂

@@StarTrekTheory - Yes! And it would have easily fit with "The Cage," which people tend to forget did NOT have that psychedelic brightly colored look of the 1960's. It was black, grey, and gunmetal, with subdued earthy toned uniforms. And the LOOK of The Cage (made earlier in 1964) still had a very residual 1950's, pulpy vibe to it. So, they could have done a 1950's retrofuture (with big budget quality) and it wouldn't have clashed with "The Cage" whatsoever--even though it would obviously look far BETTER than "The Cage."
The whole idea that every era of Trek has to look homogeneously like the year 2020 doesn't make any sense. "Discovery" is not set in 2020, it is set in the 2250's--which will look NOTHING like the year 2020 when the 2250's actually arrive--and we have no idea what it will look like. But we do know this from an in-universe perspective: The 2250's of the Star Trek universe is NOT OUR FUTURE. It is an alternative future with an alternative history that is far different from our own. To my recollection, there was no world war in 1996 in which a genetically engineered madman came to power in India. Nothing even similar to that ever took place. It's also a fictional world in which Earth emerged (in just a few decades time) from a post-apocalyptic dark age--in which much of the technologies we enjoy would have been lost. From that, It's not hard to fantasize a retrofuture based on highly advanced analog technology rather than 2020's digital tech. But you have to have an imagination.

Enterprise I'm kinda okay with cause the ending showing it as a holodeck program Riker has running makes the touchscreen stuff and other mess ups make sense, as it's looking back at that era through a 24th century lense, so it's sorta semi-canon in my mind. Discovery can sod off for all I care. It just doesn't fit. They seem to be trying to make sense of it, with this apparent lead up to some event that knocks back the tech by X number of years, but I really think they should have worked back from the TOS look for prequels. It just makes more sense instead of screwing with it to look more modern just because we can do that, everything just feels disjointed because of that approach.

The computers on the 1701 are far more advanced than those on the NX-01. Archer could not have told the computer to access historic files and extrapolate whether or not the bad guy's plans would be a likely possibility. Spock did this kind of conversation with the TOS enterprise's computers all the time. There was no 'lost tech'.

I still don't think he going to bring any of the ST show completely in line with canon. Kurtzman and staff made a half ass attempt to explain why Enterprise didn't have holo-communication by but having Pike pull the system off of the Enterprise because it was not working and he "prefer" viewscreen. That didn't explain why the reset of Star Fleet wasn't using it during the Kirk era. There were lot of mistake made in STD that can't be unmade. Especially, the look and tech of STD.
BTW, the JJverse, is not part of ST prime universe. So, the tech can look like that because it's a different universe caused by Spock time jump.

I dont mean to shoot down your theory but I'm afraid it's too late for that. In the STD S2 episode "If memory serves" we see a recap of the TOS episode "the cage". The retro look was already present there and "the cage" takes place before control existed. The truth is that all star trek after 2009 is made under a different license and is a reboot of the franchise. Instead of trying to reconcile them they should be treated for what they are; two different beasts.

I would like it if they had to reinvent the computer, from hardware to software, meaning that all previously used languages would just simply vanish and they had to start from the ground up.

Brilliant! They should give you a job on the writing team. Wouldn't it be great to have that look back again

I don't understand why people can't accept the discovery enterprise is just a modern take on 60s ideas and designs they are supposed to be the same ship with the same interior is that do hard to take?

Haha exactly, it would almost be like someone from our 40s/50s going to the 60s where less is more ;)

I think the majority of trek fans would prefer a purge of the events in anything related to jarjar and klungeman.
All the studios had to was employ the right people and we'd all be enjoying quality trek. Star trek continues was made on a tiny budget in comparison and it had more love and dedication in one episode that the whole of STD and Picard

So basically with this theory, you're saying that the look itself of Star Trek was that of the JJ Abrams universe and the discovery style? Meaning that it has always looked that way and when they try to shut down control, everything went retro? That could make a lot of sense.

I like this theory, but SNW is not set up to be season spanning story arcs, but more of the episode by episode nature. This seems like a lot of content to mash into one episode. That being said, it wouldn't be the first time for multiple part episodes in it's history.

Sorry dude, I meant to leave a comment weeks back! I love the idea of a Pike series, I think it could be the modern Trek old Trek fans could actually be happy with!... ha, we'll never be fully happy! :-)

Cheers mate! Yeah SNW is the one that has me the most excited... the Pike actor feels the most in the mold of Kirk... and I like that they are planning to go less serialized storytelling and more episodic (that's always Trek at its best imo)... fingers crossed on this show! 😄
