Captain Pike’s Story So Far: Timeline to Tragedy | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

- What a long, strange trip it's been for Captain Pike. The original Star Trek captain, it took over 30 years before his debut episode actually aired on TV. But before that, the only story to feature him that had made it to screens was also, well, his last story.
But that all changed in 2019 when Pike was revived for a season-long run on Star Trek: Discovery. And the popularity of that version of the character, as portrayed by Anson Mount, led to him getting his own show, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
But how did Christopher Pike get from there to here, and where exactly does Strange New Worlds fit into his story - a story that we know has a definite end? Let's, um, engage with it all - this is Captain Pike's timeline... so far!

Not a trekkie, but learning about the character's legacy and story kinda got me searching more about star trek. Anson's version of Pike is that charming and effective.
@gas the bikes You can't even spell Trekkie right. 😄
@gas the bikes what he said actually was his point.
Why is Pike now all grey in Discovery now he's all grey .
Welcome new Trekie!
ANSON MOUNT IS BETTER THAN JAMES T KIRK( CHRIS PONE)
Anson Mount is perfect as Pike.
Fascinating to contemplate his 'march to tragedy'. He knows the major career steps that will lead to it. Even the accident itself, when it starts he knows he has seconds left ...
The courage it will take as time winds down.....is mind bending. It's the single most haunting event in Star Trek, but also nice to know it ends in peace and happiness. 'Reality' to the mind is nothing but stimuli, whether actual or simulated.
It's also interesting how he had the choice. avoid it but the galaxy is doomed. or be the captain sworn to save if necessary, and take the crystal.
He also knows what would happen if he doesn't do it .
What happened to Chris Pike is physically EVEN WORSE than what happened to Darth Vader. With the aid of his cybernetics he was very powerful and could still walk and sword fight and function and he needed help for it but he could still see, hear and talk. He suffered an arguably WORSE fate than Anakin Skywalker.
Star Trek & Star Wars are both different though.
They are very very different characters. Anakin became consumed with anger and fear and made bad decisions that lead to his fate.
Pike did what he did to save innocent people and was only a victim of circumstances.
Their outcome doesn't seem related
It all fits together so beautifully. It's like an intricate puzzle. Like fate itself. Incredible character journey.
This actually makes me want to cry at how sweet it is.
Finally Star Trek is back Anson Mount is fantastic he killed it in Hell on Wheels and he was the best episode of Discovery he is going to save Star Trek
The Mudd episode and short where some of the best Trek episodes imo
that comment didn't age well, so far Strange new worlds is even worse than discovery first seasons
@@BigSocksProds are you on drugs?
@@BigSocksProds wtf are you talking about, strange new worlds is legit the best since TNG or DS9
@@BigSocksProds Strange new worlds is among the best series in Star Trek since DS9. That's simply a fact.
Pike is so heroic. What the video glossed over, but was clearly states in "The Menagerie" is that during the incident where Pike is exposed to the crippling Delta radiation, he stills manages to save the lives of many junior officers who are in that section of the ship. When he leaves the gem on Vulcan he saves their lives in the process.
Spock is that friend we all need 👍
well said
It takes Spock's loyalty and friendship with James T. Kirk to make Kirk into the galaxy saving legend that he is.
@@victorpradha9946 Totally agree with you my friend
And why Kirk went back for Spock when everyone thought he was dead.
CAPT Pike is the closest thing I’ve seen that perfectly depicts some of the better US Military commanders I’ve had. Certainly the most charismatic.
What a touching story.
always did want to see more of pike outside of the original pilot then him returning for the illusion. The new show gives that
does he know he is in illusion?
It was mentioned in the first episode that Pike had a decade left.
Also that he was married? Hmm who was that lady captain and does she know about vina?
the current pike is one of the best captains ever
It’s sad about pike in the original, of course he was going to choose to save others given who he was.
Little known fact but Pike spirelled downhill after this meeting , got in with the wrong space crowd , became a space pirate and worked his way up to command ... he changed his name to captain Davros but later became absolute ruler of the daleks and was known simply as ....Davros
Jeffrey Hunter the actor who played the original pikes fate is just as tragic as the one he portrayed,
For real, such a promising actor who died so young :(
omg that is so damn sad what happened to him :(
@@Mama-Dee1969 had a fall in his home and had surgery to repair his fractured skull, he didn’t make it.
@@champbaka You wonder if he had accepted his role in the series, that tragedy wouldn't have happened because he career would have taken off.
@@champbaka There is a bit more to it than that. Like the severe concussion and medical issues he had as a result of an onset prop explosion 'malfunctioning'. This was the likely cause for the hemorrhage that caused him to fall down the stairs. The fracture wasn't what killed him....the hemorrhage was. Nor was the surgery to 'repair the fracture'. It was to repair the hemorrhage.
I’m loving this series, wish everyday was Thursday
What you should ask.. Is how far can the Talosians project an illusion..As Commodore was an illusion half way across the Galaxy..
And they knew Spock needed help. As they told Kirk he was persistent. And might get back control of the Enterprise. Before they reached Talos IV to complete Spock mission...
So that's where the south park kindergarten teacher was based out from
Pike seemed to be a man who kind of fell into the hands of Fate after the Enterprise received the " distress call " from planet Talos 4 in 2254.
He left Vena behind on that planet, knowing her disabled form, hidden by illusion, only to return to Talos 4 years later in the same condition.
Those Talosians sure are match makers.
And they based Jeff Bezos off of the Talosians.
I'd be fine with retiring to Talos IV right now
This new star trek can be go in two ways. Anson mount Pike has two choices now
1. Accept his fate. Then it is Original star trek timeline.
2. Fight with his fate and win so that totally a new star trek universe timeline can be created or branched. ( This new timeline can be created by mixing temporal wars story or by Q)
Jeffrey hunter did not reject Star Trek. His wife told him not to do it and he went to Europe doing movies. He got hurt and back in America died in 1969 from brain bleed that was originally triggered in Onset accident in Europe. Hunter did want the part of mike Brady that David hedison turned down. With part going to Robert Reed.
Great wrap up Mr. Scott!
Episode 10 finally tie it all together, wow.
Nice explanation 👍🏾
My head canon for the 4 years war is that the USS Enterprise was involved in the war with Robert April as the one captain for the ship as an active fleet command ship(as indicated by Star Museum website) on the final 2 years and then Pike was new XO on the final year and removed from the front to be overhauled and start its 2nd five mission.
Ya know, with Star Trek having already played the alternate timeline universe card. Pike doesn't have to end up the tragic character in this.
probably. on the other hand it's a great homage to the original actor for Pike. who had exactly 4 years of acting credits after he was on star trek before he died from brain complications.
@@cwolf201 He was a strikingly tall and handsome man.
Life doesn't always have happy endings, even in an upbeat future of humanity that ST represents.
One question still remains, what year did he start with the pompadour?
Thank you for this.
Great explanation!
That's was great man just wonderful
That’s one complicated origin story!
His story continued, after a fashion, in the Starfleet Academy comics from Marvel.
A melhor série até hoje.
There was a strong ray liotta vibe in the original captain Pike
Absolutely. Always thought a young Liotta would have been perfect.
Loved this! Would be hella cool if they Captain America this dudeeee!
finally thank you for the history lesson!
Star Trek Discovery is the biggest hit in years that it gets its own spin off with captain Pike has his own show in years
Well done!
Will Strange New Worlds be remaking the original TOS pilot episode before showing how he gets severely injured?
Sadly no has they already depicted what happened after in Discovery season 2 has the video trained to explain. They recast Vina for a few scenes in the episode "If Memory Serves" shared with Burnham and then one vital scene with Pike. Has you can imagine Discovery's make up department wasn't so loyal to the Talosian's alien design but they did have them for few scenes. Wasn't that exciting of an episode to me.
Awesome to see the revival of Pike...
Susan Oliver, was beyond stunning.
Love it!!
Hope well get Captain Pike and Blackbolt in Captn pike and Multiverse episode
... any chance Pike can escape that horrible fate? Thoughts???
If he avoids his fate, by not rescuing the cadets in the engine room of the training vessel, he changes their fates & those of the people that they will never interact with.
It’s Star Trek, anything could happen. Maybe they’ll clone him, give him one of those android bodies. So the original dies, but the clone lives?? Maybe a loophole?
At this point it seems like his surviving (barely) the accident and continuing on to the events of "The Menagerie" are pretty much baked in. But I'm sure that if the series continues for a few years they will flirt with the concept that he can somehow overcome fate, but in the end cannot.
It's like a tragic sea story curse.
Talos 4, Vina, Christopher Pike triangle.
The story adds mystery to the story of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The only starship to visit Talos 4 twice.
@jjayguy23 actually, it's not Star Trek. It's Strange New Worlds, and yes anything's possible.
nice one
👍👊🖖
Do much charisma, a proper Captain
Damn, I'm happy with the ending is the beginning.
It reminds me of Halo:Reach. You know how it ends, but you want to know everything that happened to get you there.
Hopefully we go back to Talos in Strange New Worlds
In a world of "replicators" nobody would suffer from a physical injury ever again.
Mind blown 🤯
very very cool
Wonder if there will be an Episode where a Little Bird from the Future who chirps Spock Pike's inevitable fate into his Ear and that he plays an important role in the future of the Talosian? Spock must known what be happning and contacted the Talosians to develop with them this plan in The Menagerie.
he forgot to mention that captain archer in enterprise was a captain before pike since that Is a prequel to this
That's a different ship. Not the same Enterprise.
Anson Mount has saved Star Trek.
Love this season beats dicacoveyr
50 seconds
“How did he get from there to here”
Me
IT’S BEEN A LONG ROOOOOOOOOAD
Wow beautiful
Just need Discovery+ to launch in UK.
How would that help? Strange New Worlds is available on Paramount + and Discovery is on that and Netflix.
Wow
Considering its now an alternate timeline, he doesn't have to wind up like this.
but, why is uhura already with cap pike? (here on the new series)
well, in strange new worlds she is fresh out of the academy. in the original series she is lieutenant uhura. she just served with pike and will go on the serve with kirk
2259 (SNW): Cadet.
2266 (TOS): Lieutenant
she is a cadet who just joined Enterprise, the others from TOS haven't been assigned to the ship yet
In the JJ Movies Uhura was on the academy in the same class as Kirk.
In TOS, as of Memory Alpha, her career started the same year as Kirk took command of the 1701.
This is a retcon, they are playing fast and loose with it.
@@neto135791 it still doesn't make sense why didn't uhura and nurse chapel acknowledge pike in the menagerie uhura was on the ship where pike was? its bad writing.
What about the version of him from the JJ Abrahams movie trilogy?
He mentioned that at 2:08, but it's a different universe or timeline
isnt he blackbolt aswell?
This would have been like had Jeffrey hunter got picked up has a show this show makes up for not getting Jeffrey hunter but with a new actor to play the part for this show
And now Star Wars has their own version of the Yes No chair, it's called IG-12
Interesting.
What’s that groovy music?
anson mount is the show.
Are there Star Trek episodes out there with Jeffrey hunter as Pike
No.
Only “The Cage”
@@PrincessToyNerd Thank you.
@@larrygrebler5054 thank you
a happy ending that's an illusion..thanks star trek that sits well in my mind
It would be cruel if the Talosians caused Pike’s accident so he would return to the planet.
The Talosian's power to create illusions could not reach that far of a distance as was stated in Star Trek's "The Menagerie".
Rocks
All of his horses and all of his men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again. 3:54
Pike really is the best captain.
@2:18 Aren't they all, technically..?
Uh, is the Kelvin-verse not responsible for the events in Picard and Discovery?
Sooooo....we are presuming that he would NOT be in the new Kelvin timeline then.
That Pike met his end in Into Darkness.
"What mouth" Lol
Show more of the old shows
Discovery and SNW are also in an alternate timeline
SNW/DISCO are in the Prime Timeline.
How in the world are you confused by the red bursts?
So, how many realities are there?

Wow! Did this algorithm treat help or what? 👍👍
The Show is doing too well to replace Captain Pike now and Paul Wesley is not playing Captain Kirk that well neither as he has the Jim Carrey look to him and he's missing the Captain Kirk Charm !
Dr.McCoy will have to come in soon.
But who knows
It's hard to watch this, knowing that he is going to get his face burned off at some point.
if you tell somebody from the past their future, it's bound to cause changes
@@danielmarinucci9342 of course he had the choice. don't take the crystal avoid the fate. but an unknown total number of lives lost. not his though. or take it and assure that his future happens
it seems pike's tragedy might be his life's conclusion in ANOTHER STAR TREK TIMELINE so it might never happen although it already did
That tragedy is not a fixed point in time, so he might be able to save himself.
It would help if one understands the fact that due to the Paramount & CBS lawsuits both the Prime universe and the Kelvin universe are NOT the same universe as The Original Series cannon as they are all Separate existences Because of the conditions of the lawsuits brought about as a result of the Viacom break up it has prevented these shows from being the same story/ timeline!! 🤠🖖
It's was Jeffrey Hunter's fault. If he didn't quit Star Trek he wouldn't have died from that prop explosion. Gene Roddenberry did had a go with him and his wife after the pilot episode. There was a documentary that said Jeffrey Hunter's wife said to Gene Roddenberry "My husband is a movie actor not a Tv actor." Then Gene Roddenberry had a go at her. He was right to do that. We all know that Gene Roddenberry got on very well with William Shatner.
Thanks for posting about that. Your comment drove me to research his bio on wiki. Very interesting, and curious. Injured in an explosion, exacerbated by flight (in a plane), and died by causes beyond the help of the medical tech of that time. Very sad.
😢
They changed the future and outcome of almost every Star Trek character. Why this guy?.
Howdy
Oh dumb choice to exclude kelvin pike.
Pike ends up in a chair is a universal constant regardless of reality, that’s worth mentioning.
"How did his story get from there to here?" 😂😂😂
Isn't Pike in the new Trek movies?
If you think about it, Bruce Greenwood established the "cool dad" personality of this character. Thanks to him.
So why can't he just not do what kills him he know when and how it happens
It's what is typically referred to in time-travel stories as a fixed point: it can't be changed, because time itself is pushing toward that event.
@@MarcelLWalker bull time has been changed more than once in the star trek universe
Because Pike's integrity & duty will compel him to save the cadets in the engine room of the training ship,, where the accident will occur. Not saving them will drastically change the timeline.
@@MarcelLWalker he changed it all ready by discovery going forward in time
@@nealroberts5844
Well in that instance, they saved the timeline.
Pike'makeup was far better in the 1966 episode.
Yeah,okay 👌
