  • In TNG Schisms, the crew encountered these strange clicking aliens that abducted members of the crew for strange experimentation. They were never seen again in canon, but in several books, comics and games, these mysterious creatures return. But just what are they? And what did they want?

The episode itself was pretty much an alien abduction story set in a setting where humans are highly advance, can travel between the stars, and have contacted hundreds of other intelligent species. Everything about the episode portrays the accounts of people whom claim they have been abducted by aliens: being taken in the middle of the night, having their memories erased, yet when something happens that is somewhat similar to what they experienced during the abduction it can trigger a flash back, medical experiments being done without a person's consent, and for unknown reasons. Heck, even the rooms are somewhat similar to the rooms that people whom claim to have been abducted by aliens are like.

There's bits of information you can dig up in the Solanae Ground Battlezone regarding their past. You get an Accolade for finding them all:
At some point, thousands of years ago, an accident (probably involving Omega particles) occurred that rendered them unable to survive in realspace, so they had to abandon the Dyson spheres and retreat into subspace until they could figure out a cure for their condition.

This was one of my favorite Next Gen episodes. The only weak point was when you actually see the aliens. I wish they had the budget to do something more Lovecraftian and otherworldly-looking rather than another humanoid-shaped critter. But other than that, this episode still fits in my Top 10 list. There are few Trek episodes in the franchise that do some really good suspense and horror like this.

The Iconian-related origin ties them into the IP better as it makes them inter-connected with other established elements and, if there is one big flaw of Star Trek world building, it is that all the various aliens that exist in the galaxy seem to exist within their own bubbles and only ever have meaningful interactions with Starfleet and never one-another. And yet, given that we are talking about an alien species that exists outside of normal space and thus, as it is typically defined, the galaxy-- maybe the Iconian origin makes the whole universe seem smaller than it really should.
I guess, fundamentally, the real issue with them was that they were carrying out these kidnappings and experimentations, but only to a crew of a single Federation Starship and only for about a week or so. The idea that no one else in the galaxy has apparently ever been a victim or theirs, or-- if they have-- they just never realized it, just seems so very odd.

    • @TheHobgoblyn
      @TheHobgoblyn 2 роки тому +4

@@travissmith2848 Well, if there were reports of crewmen disappearing for hours at a time and reappearing with limbs having been detached and reattached incorrectly or having their entire blood supply replaced, even among the rival powers, then the episode would have indicated that there was precedent for such things happening. Instead it came across as that it never happened before and though little was done to permanently resolve it, it was never mentioned again either.
I suppose we have seen some interaction between Klingnons and Romulans in TNG and DS9 pretty well covered how those two relate to the Cardassians as well. The Ferangi are a bit of an odd one though as we are told they are successful, but it is difficult to imagine them doing well in interactions with any of those other three.
But then we got cases such as-- why did the Alpha/Beta quadrant races not work together to repel the Borg? Seems like they were a bigger threat than the Dominion.

I personally enjoy both non-canonical scenarios, but I do lean towards the more sinister one a little as well.
That said however, while keeping their mysterious presence is fine, it's kind of hard to do that for some adults without purposely keeping characters, governments etc from studying them, because most beings and their intentions can be boiled down to simple desires and needs. It's something I realized when thinking on eldritch gods and the allure of beings who's goals were beyond mortal minds, but I realized that's incredibly silly when you think on it, because there's nearly always a goal, unless the being or beings are of true chaotic mentality/existence.
I do agree that they should come back though, as they were a great, creepy species that disturbed many, including myself.

Schisms was one of the episodes where the writers truly explored the concept of "Meeting New Life and New Civilisations" where most of TNG's episodes was meeting one humanoid or human like species after another. This was an episode where they tackled a species totally alien in motivations and it was one of TNG's best and more memorable. One of the few Nitpicks I had with TNG was that they reused too many basic plot outlines for too many episodes, they weren't bad episodes, but they felt more formulaic. Understandably writers aren't given very much time to write each season, before production starts, so they have to find ways to speed things up and cut some corners to get things done.

I actually like the idea of them being related to the Iconians. and think that this could be adapted into the tv series canon, but with sto variation being a timeline where the Iconians had survived. While in the main timeline the Iconians had died out, and now you have three many servitor races still existing yet maybe in a civil war between each other batting for control of the remaining Iconian tech they can find. Also I could see them doing both info gathering an creating things for a group, as well as trying to learn about real space an the anatomy of the beings there, since if they were altered by the Iconians their anatomy would have changed quite drasticly to survive in sub-space. So their attempt at learning about real space an the anatomy of those in it, could be them trying to relearn what they had forgotten, and regain an ability to exist in real space as they had in eons prior to their change by the Iconians.

I think they are all explorers, and have a thirst for knowledge, but have no concept of morals and are brutal in the application and acquisition of that knowledge.

These Solonae sound a lot like the Mi-Go from Lovecraft's "The Whisperer in Darkness", not so much from their physical description, but their origins and way of life. In fact, they fit each other rather well in this as being the same species of creature.

STO really does the Solanae justice. A lot of species got fleshed out by STO, such as the Spherebuilder, Nakuhl etc. that’s why I love STO so much.

Think a Star Trek writer got abducted and the Tng episode got made after. Either that or the abduction phenomenon was spiking enough to reach other sections of our culture.
Just my own opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

If you go only by that episode it's the best way to leave them. Once you assign motivations to their actions it misses the point. Being while on a surface level anyone can argue their actions are evil. Fans who like going deeper can find a lot of grey there. Can you say they see anyone in Star Fleet universe as intelligent? Do we know for sure they aren't causing them just as much harm by being there? As well this all starting the same time as other actions we can never be completely sure that correlation and causation are linked .

Remember that time Jeordi got turned into an alien. I like that episode but something never sat right with me till I realized that they wipe out that species at the end of the episode by leaving a warning beacon. If nobody ever goes there again then that alien race will eventually die off.

"the Schisms" were the creation of T N.G. writer Tracy Tormé ( he would go on to create the TV shows "Sliders" "Odyssey 5" and "Carnivàle") . what most people don't know is he's a "Ufologist" (a person that researchers U.F.O.) he baced them on accounts of ufo Aubductons ( he also wrote the scripts for "Fire In The Sky" "Intruders" and produced some of the best ufo documentary ever made, his most recent "The Phenomenon" was a big hit this year). also he is the son of the legendary Mel Tormé . en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Torm%C3%A9

this episode and the dyson sphere are some of the issues and plot points that Star trek seems to ignore or forgot about. Like, supposedly in Picard, we have Romulan refugees....from 1 system...of a faction that spanned hundreds of planets...are we to believe EVERY planet they owned was destroyed (al la STO?) Even if that was the case...why is no one saying ...."hey, we got all these displaced peoples....you know where we can put them...the dyson sphere that has enough land mass for 250MILLION M class planets!!!!" but nah, lets create some needlessly convoluted system of events that make no sense. lol
