Scott - I know this is over a year old and you'll never see this comment, but the "Only For" on the Gameboy Advance games was because parents were getting confused between Gameboy/Gameboy Color and Gameboy advance games, thinking that the GBA game would work on GBC, when of course it wouldn't. Ending in an open game that couldn't be returned. It's sorta like the Wii U syndrome - when I worked retail parents thought the Wii U was just a Tablet add on for the original Wii.
@@somebody_a_guy the Wii was one of the best selling consoles in all history, so they wanted to keep trying to ride that hype train and install base, however by keeping the name they did the opposite. People had already moved past the Wii and it just seemed like a 300 dollar attachment for the same system. I'd say it was a similar mistake made through different intentions. Shame since the Wii U had potential. Glad the Switch was a home run however.
@@somebody_a_guy It's even funnier than that. This also came up with the NES and SNES back in the day, and they successfully dealt with it then. Hence the Only For Super Nintendo stickers. They literally did the "ride the hype train and keep the name" and made it work. 20 years before they screwed it up.
Two things: My European Gameboy Player came with the disc in a normal DVD sized case. Not the Japanese one. The European DS Boxes are thicker because our manuals include multiple languages and are potentially thicker.
Yup, would just confirm that. Will point out it was essentially a day 1 Gameboy Player, so it's possible a change was made later in the production run, but yeah. Player disc came in a normal sized Gamecube DVD case, complete with a proper, full colour sleeve insert like a game would.
Counterpoint to the DS argument - a lot of other pal Nintendo systems have the same thing with their manuals, and the boxes were the same size. The best example I have is DK64, the manual for my copy is incredibly thick, and has multiple languages, but the box is the same size as all the others. Not saying you’re wrong by any means, but moreso pointing out how utterly ridiculous our chunky DS cases are. Also, fun fact, I have a couple of American import DS games, and all of our manuals fit in their cases perfectly… but no, we must chunk, thanks Nintendo!!
Not gonna lie, as a European, whenever I see those thin ps1 cases from North America, it always confuses me a bit. I always think they look like someone lost the original box and just stuck them into a random CD case.
@@MaximNightFury Nah, the Audio quality of the voice-over segments is clearly better than when he’s speaking to the camera, plus he’d be checking the script quite a bit, so he likely recorded the voice over and recorded the box displaying separate.

The Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast games' jewel cases' "spine hats" are called _obi_ and are also very common on books, CDs, and DVDs as well; indeed, "Does it come with the spine hat?" matters to collectors of Japanese media.

Sadly, that is the future. Physical games will get rarer and rarer. Pure corporate greed will always win. They're already hinting at standard AAA game price being $70 across the board, and the digital trend was obvious before that even happened. Digital sales increase their profits on a level of magnitude. No manufacturing costs and it eliminates the possibility of people buying second hand. That's gotta mean like triple the profit at least.
I think some of the disc based games came with needlessly long cases so they'd be the same size as VHS tapes, and therefore nicely on the same shelves.
Let’s be real, we will never have another Scott the woz someone who can make 1 really great video a week for almost 4 years, I’m glad he took a break he deserves it
20:32 For everyone wondering the math here, you have to first split the cover into two equal halves. Then, split the top half into another two equal halves. The top quarter of the cover is what would technically be considered the “top.” Therefore, the Dreamcast logo is “taking up 90% of the top.”

@@KnuckleHunkybuck Microsoft still releases software on the Mac like Office but yeah it's weird hearing Bill Gates say "In 1990, Microsoft expects to make half of our revenue from Macintosh software sales"
As a European, I always preferred the standardised text on the spine. Makes my game shelf so much easier to read, and in a shop the front artwork is usually showing if it’s a big game, so not much of a problem. DS games however, they’re so bulky I can only pick my favourites to go on the shelf and the rest have to go in the bucket of game cards.
I quite like the PS2 spines here for the same reason, imo they do look quite good on the shelf, and the smattering of Platinum Hits, dwarfed by the white spines, don't really ruin it for me, they end up kind of like the coloured spines for Wii games, a fun event (though that might just be because my ones are Crazy Taxi, Final Fantasy X, X-2, Simpsons Hit & Run, and Timesplitters, like, it feels good that they pop out for me). And yeah, the spines are actually really easy to browse through at game shops for second hand games, makes it easy to pick up new ones.
yep!! i’m from the uk and i’m probably biased because i grew up with the ps2, but i really like the style of game case. it’s mostly consistent (unless you get the platinum hits) so it looks really nice on a shelf. though i grew up with the ds as well but i’ve always hated the cases. i don’t even know where my cases for them are (if i still have them), i just keep my games in a jar and take them in my ds case if i want to play them on a road trip or something. i don’t get why they’re so bulky.
Personally I like the DS cases. I had a bunch of GBA games and I always found that they tended to fall out of the NA cases more often than the PAL ones
I imagine some consoles were bulkier in Europe to account for extra languages in the manual. Sometimes, the extra text effect what could be put into the cartridge/disc

Which is part of why the WiiU failed. Interesting how they made a mistake they avoided in the past.
@@Natendo You hit the nail on the head!
Added bonus: On the front of Wii packaging, the bubble that the “Wii” logo is in was inspired by the side profile of the Wii remote.

Wii manuals in America had two or three languages sometimes, so I'm impressed they never had to make the packaging bigger

Sadly, that is the future. Physical games will get rarer and rarer. Pure corporate greed will always win. Digital sales increase their profits on a level of magnitude. No manufacturing costs and it eliminates the possibility of people buying second hand. That's gotta mean like triple the profit at least.

For everyone wondering the math here, you have to first split the cover into two equal halves. Then, split the top half into another two equal halves. The top quarter of the cover is what would technically be considered the “top.” Therefore, the Dreamcast logo is “taking up 90% of the top.”

Still sucks how early PAL PS2 games (and some later games) were black however
Much prefer the blue
Personally I like the DS cases. I had a bunch of GBA games and I always found that they tended to fall out of the NA cases more often than the PAL ones
I imagine some consoles were bulkier in Europe to account for extra languages in the manual. Sometimes, the extra text effect what could be put into the cartridge/disc
