These take about 25 cents to make but say hey we can jack up the prices to $69.99 and blame it on the supply chain even though most people play digitally.
Not only that, but initially when they switched over they used an all silver spine. They updated it fairly quickly to add a green bar at the top so the spine would line up better with the older design games. But it's gonna annoy the hell out of future me lol

@@ot9523 I mean I can kinda understand that but it’s such a small discrepancy and something I’ve literally never thought of till now lol. You’re only there as long as it takes to either pick an app or a game so maybe five seconds, and from a developer stand point it just makes sense rather than go by a case by case basis to do, whether the game is being played on a x or s when they’re essentially the same thing just more or less powerful tho that’s just my take on the matter, I play on both ps5 and x I like both pretty much equally
I recall an FAQ on the Xbox site around the time of the One’s release, where they said the disc was on the left side to make it easier for right handers to remove the disc while holding the case in your left hand. Somebody else had a theory that putting the disc on the left evenly distributes the weight and protects it from potentially moving off of its spindle during shipping or being dropped. To be fair, if that is the reason they went with, I’ll give them credit as I’ve genuinely had only two or three of my PS4/PS5 games that arrived in the mail with the disc actually on the spindle; every other one I’ve received has had them loose. I can honestly say I’ve never had that with Xbox One games in nearly 10 years of buying them.
As someone who worked at a GameStop for 3 years, trying to organize the Xbox One and Series X games was such a headache, not to mention explaining to customers which ones will work on either/or. But props to you for being much more kind to the Xbox cases than I am XD

This best part about this video is imagining Scott laying on his stomach on the floor kicking his feet back and forth in the air while talking about Xbox game cases.
I never actually owned an Xbox 360, so I've been enjoying the backwards compatibility offered. When I try to get the games physically I try and get these Xbox One branded cases just so they look nice next to my standard One games.
People heat on me for not buying digital games but I truly enjoy going to a local store and picking up a physical copy of the game. It has been a euphoric vibe for me every since I was a kid. Plus l, it looks cool as hell in my collection when they are all together 😎
There’s another version of the Series X cases where the green top of the spine is missing. It just a completely grey spine with the Xbox logo and text right at the top…. I think they were made before they started using the green part. It’s so annoying that they changed it to the green tab because now they look stupid on a shelf. 😅
I think they put the discs on the left because of how people store their games. Although most people store their games vertically like books, there are also plenty of people who stack them horizontally like a stack of papers. Normally, when people from the latter group store their games, the sensitive side of the disc is resting on the case due to gravity, which has a slight risk of scratching the disc. With the Xbox cases, however, since the disc is on the left side, the disc is suspended in the middle of the case when stored, and wont get scratched by the inside of the case. Idk if I explained that well, but the tl;dr; is that it makes it slightly less likely for the disc to get scratched
While that does make some sense, they also decided to do this when they finally transitioned to Blu-rays, which are already able to endure more punishment than dvd's, so this sort of protection (if that's really the reason for the change) was kinda moot.
I think with the PS5 and Xbox Series X it's hard for developers both third and first party to not develop for the previous gen. There isn't really a reason not to develop just for the new gen if they can work perfectly fine on previous gen hardware and this video actually is a good example how the cases don't know what they even are anymore labeling them as all under one brand instead of one console. Just interesting seeing the future of gaming heading into this direction
Have you seen last gen games being released recently? The one that comes to mind is the PS4 version of RE4 a game that was designed for current gen first
I saw it a ton for PlayStation and still do. Of course at launch, no one had a ps5 anyway so I always saw things being released for the ps4 and 5 and basically always thought that was the reason why. This also left ps5 owners asking themselves if there was any point in having a 5 in the first place but I was a little different since I never had a 4 and came from the original xbox one. Its fun at this point since the ps4 library seems so massive I've been collecting for it and the 5 and just playing them all on the 5. Delving into the 4 library and collecting for it has been amazing since I never had one.

To me the most stupid thing in the current state of physical media games is the lack of physical manual. People buy a physical game to have something that is tangible and that includes the manual. "But nobody reads manuals!" That's true, but everybody loves the artwork 😁
To get a Manual today seems to be like a premium price thing because the only physicals I've bought that come with manuals recently are those that are sold by Limited Run or a special edition of a Playasia listing that has a manual included
I really like the new Series X cases. I always wanted them to have a "sleeker" design like the JP Dreamcast games, and I'm so glad they're more similar to them now.
So a small addition to this that you didn't mention; that green banner on the side of the current Xbox cases isn't standardized. My copies of Skywalker Saga and Marvel Midnight Suns don't have it. I don't really like that green banner so this is a welcome change imo, but it means that those games stick out a lot when stuck up next to other Xbox One/Series X games.
I was surprised it wasn't mentioned. Looking through my collection, Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and TMNT Cowabunga collection do not have the green bit, while COD Modern Warfare 2, Destroy All Humans 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and Sonic Frontiers do have it. AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative is the newer style case but only says "Xbox One" on the cover and on the spine.
@otakumusprime7745 Because Somnium isn't a Series X game but still gets released with the newer cases. The whole system is a complete mess and Series X games should have been deperated from XB1 games. Smart delivery sucks for physical collecting and case consistency haha
Scott has taken the time to put my subconscious thoughts, that have been lingering for years, into words. Well said, sir. The realm of Xbox is a strange, fascinating place.
The Fallout 3 GOTY version I have comes in a 360 sized case, with a 360 style "Platinum Hits" spine label and header, no other case insignia, but DOES have a black text box on the front cover that says "Plays on Xbox One"
Personally I ADORE when cases are inconsistent. I’m not personally a fan of neat, perfect rows so the whole collection being impossible to cram together perfectly vibes with me. I love awkward chunky boxes, weird sizes, off colors. I LIVE for the plastic homer simpson DVD case.
In fact, there is one more variant of Series X's case, in which the whole spine is covered in grey, while the front is the same as the newest one shown in 12:06
I love this video. It's such a tiny insignificant thing for most people but it's just always been interesting to me even though no one would ever talk about it outside of some random forum post with 5 replies. I hope Scott does one on PlayStation branding. About how the PS3 cases switched to the new logo but they also brought that logo over to the PSP at the end of its life instead of leaving it the same. It's crazy how artistically contrasted the OG Xbox and 360 were from Dark Industrial/Nuclear themed to Bright Futuristic themed. It was practically ingenious even if it was probably unintentional. Since then, Microsoft really does not give a damn since the Xbone released almost 10 years ago.
I kinda like the previous Xbox one cases with the white ink printed on the plastic, I think the words were raised too? Made it feel a little more premium compared to other consoles cases.
Xbox backwards compatibility is awesome. They updated a bunch of old games to 60fps and 4k for free. Like read dead redemption for instance where as PlayStation charged $60 for a 60fps update of Last of us
The most recent revision has different variations too, my copy of Soul Hackers 2 doesn't have the green tab on the spine. My Xbox shelf looks so cursed.
Most people are right hand dominant. So when you open the box your left and can hold the case while your right (dominant) hand goes to the left. Makes opening a game while standing up much more secure.
I think I'm starting to like these videos a little more than the normal long scott the woz episodes NOT SAYING THE REGULAR VIDEOS ARE BAD IN ANY WAY but these are less bit focused and are just quick videos of scott ranting about a specific topic while retaining that patented Scott humor. They are so easy to listen to I kinda don't even need the visuals to understand what he's talking about I have been throwing these videos on in the background at work and it's been helping me through the days
I kind of agree. I prefer his humor in the main channel, but I feel that his main channel videos tend to dwell on a specific topic for far longer than they used to. I'm fine with that from time to time but I feel that the quick flow of his older videos added to the humor.
The regular videos, despite being longer, seem to cater to people with extremely short attention span who needs to laugh at dumb jokes every 3 seconds otherwise they'll skip to the next video. I also prefer this kind of episodes.
The Xbox cases are absolutely awful. Besides the whole “disc on the left” thing, they do an awful job actually communicating what they’re for currently. I used to work at a game store, and I can’t tell you how often I got someone coming up with a game, assuming it was for their Xbox console, and learning it’s not. Every time I had someone come up with an Xbox game, I had to make sure that “Hey, you know this is the Xbox Series X version, right?” or “This is for the Xbox One.” and seeing so many confused and disappointed faces. Organizing them was awful, too, since they are all jumbled up with the only identifying factor being the little text in the top left. And it felt like they changed the design of the cases every 6 months. The names of the consoles are confusing enough for people, it just makes owning an Xbox a nightmare.
I made it a challenge to have a form of every version of Rayman Legends. I am only missing the PS3 version. I have the phsycials of the Wii U and PS Vita versions, and the digitals of the X360, XOne, PS4, and Switch versions.
I love how not all Series X games include that green band on the spine which just adds to the hilarious inconsistency on the shelf. It's like Microsoft actively hates physical game collectors
PlayStation disc cases are a million times better. Especially PS4 cases. They are all relatively the same and they have all been the same size since the PS3. I have PS3 disc cases and PS4 disc cases and the only difference other than the art is the colors. PS3 cases are clear unless they are GOTY edition/PlayStation Hits then they are an opaque red, and all PS4/PS5 cases are a clear blue. They are exactly the same layout wise and the discs have always been on the back cover. Its a lot better to collect PS games because they can all be sorted easily. Xbox games make your shelf look like a random collection of movies.
problem with the xbone discs being on the wrong side is that taking the disc out puts pressure on the artwork paper. most of my games have noticeable indents on the front cover art and are not very nice to look at.
Making games backward compatible that have current versions is NOT a waste of time. Some older versions are better, some newer versions are different (Assassin’s Creed III remastered or Halo 3 on MCC not having original user interface as well as not being a sole improvement), or the simple fact that the player owns the old version and should be able to play it on the newer console. Plus, the player can buy the newer and/or older version which could potentially lead to the sale of two games.
And it seems like some game boxes with the new design don’t have the green printed section at the top… they are just grey all the way (at least that’s how my copy of Lego Skywalker Saga is). Strange!!
Gonna tell you Santa isn’t real here, but these are filmed on a table covered in carpet to make it easier and keep up the appearance of looking like they’re filmed on the floor.
5:18 Yoooooo it's so cool to see that the homie Scott owns a Japanese copy of NieR Gestalt (the original NieR game) on Xbox 360! I also got that game in my collection!
I would also like to point out that for Call of Duty Black Ops Cold, Activision took a somewhat sly approach to the Xbox packaging. For starters the cases for the Xbox One and Series X versions are only slightly different as the Xbox One banner reads "Xbox One/Xbox Series X" while the Series X reads "Xbox Series X/Xbox One" at the top. While you can hypothetically buy either copies and it will work regardless of which Xbox system you have, Activision decided not give free upgrades for those who own the Xbox One disc version and instead what happens if you put the Xbox One disc inside the Series X is that the system will just run the Xbox One version instead. Whereas if you have the Series X copy you get both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X license on the disc. It's a subtle yet confusing way of going about it but it seems to have been done just to avoid giving a free upgrade which doesn't make sense since the Series X version comes with both versions anyways.
*Gamers [probably]:* Well, the Xbox's naming conventions are really all over the place, but at least nothing else about the brand can get so weird *Microsoft:* Oh man, check _this_ out!
Discs are on the left side, because of this: Majority of the People are righthanded. When you open the case it is easier to take the Disc out when it is on the left side. You are already stabilizing the left part where the disc is, because your hand is already there when you open the Case.
Main thing I hate about the Xbox cases are that after a while, the disk imprints on the front of the cover making it ugly. Least the traditional way the back gets ugly.
Xbox has been making things confusing since Xbox One in general. I feel bad for Grandmas everywhere. Between the Xbox 360, Xbox one, Xbox one S, Xbox series x.... There is no way to tell what order they go in. This is a cool video. I have noticed some of these variations and didn't get it either.
The Genesis era absolutely destroys this. Nearly every year they changed the size and location of the Genesis logo on the spine. To boot, one year they decided to squeeze the UPC on the spine too! Sega developed games are in a black grid style while third party developers where whatever colour they wanted to do. In about '94 they changed to a red spine for every game, then changed from clamshell cases to cardboard. It's the most nonsensical and confusing thing to see.
Had an experience with these the other day. My sister bought FIFA pre-owned for the Xbox ONE downstairs and it was sold as an Xbox One version as shown on the box and the receipt (not the smart delivery version) but the disk in the case was the version exclusive to the Series X... Obviously it created confusion and they had to go back out and return it for the correct version.
The main draw for having both XBOX360 versions and XBOX ONE versions of the same game is how you can replay a game twice over and earn achievements across both platforms to boost your achievement score. I did just that with pretty much all of my XBOX360 and XBOX ONE games and with this mindset it is extremely fun for me since I am a achievement hunter junkie and I would gladly do it all over again.
Don't forget that the disc version and the download version of Portal 1 have different achievements. There was a game called game room that was a collection of arcade games but you had to pay for them individually and that had different achievements versus the Xbox live arcade versions of the same game. There was a collection of mortal Kombat games that had one two and three on there and it had different achievements from ultimate mortal Kombat 3. There's probably more but I don't know.

OG Xbox and Xbox 360 packaging looked great.
i love these videos they're very chill you should keep making more videos in this style!!!
Gen z “you know what’s bullshit”
I kinda like the previous Xbox one cases with the white ink printed on the plastic, I think the words were raised too? Made it feel a little more premium compared to other consoles cases.
They put the disk on that side because they accidently gave us the British cases, they put their CD's on the other side of the box over there.
Hmm not sure that's true!
Got em
@@DuckAlertBeatsit’s easy to see the joke if you see the roads there
Thats not true
what an excellent case study
Xbox backwards compatibility is awesome. They updated a bunch of old games to 60fps and 4k for free. Like read dead redemption for instance where as PlayStation charged $60 for a 60fps update of Last of us
too bad they canceled the program
@@Devin11246they did as many games as possible with the technology
The most recent revision has different variations too, my copy of Soul Hackers 2 doesn't have the green tab on the spine. My Xbox shelf looks so cursed.
the way he pulls out disks hurts me deeply
Most people are right hand dominant. So when you open the box your left and can hold the case while your right (dominant) hand goes to the left. Makes opening a game while standing up much more secure.
I can't keep up with all the Scott content and I love it!
The Dead Island 2 box is really clean I love that new look to the cases.
I like both equally
The regular videos, despite being longer, seem to cater to people with extremely short attention span who needs to laugh at dumb jokes every 3 seconds otherwise they'll skip to the next video. I also prefer this kind of episodes.
Adding this video to the list of videos that mentioned call of duty ghosts for the Xbox
My friend 'the one who writes with his left hand' loves it, the reverse disc placement
I made it a challenge to have a form of every version of Rayman Legends. I am only missing the PS3 version. I have the phsycials of the Wii U and PS Vita versions, and the digitals of the X360, XOne, PS4, and Switch versions.
Kinda lame that you got most of them digitally to be honest
Could've been titled " The Curious Case of Xbox"
2:35 For when you REALLY wanna make sure you didn't accidentally buy Gears 5 for the Dreamcast.
You never mentioned how they changed back as well because they removed the storage capacity information in the back.
So annoying isn't it
0:04 very subtle and intentional guilty gear reference
THIS TOWN INSIDE ME
The real question is, what do the series s boxes look like?
I think this is a joke, but not 100% sure
⠀
problem with the xbone discs being on the wrong side is that taking the disc out puts pressure on the artwork paper. most of my games have noticeable indents on the front cover art and are not very nice to look at.
2024: They changed the cover design yet again for cross-gen releases.😆
I stick my Pocket Bike Racer on my 360 shelf due to it having that console's box design
Strange!!
Imagine if Xbox released a disc drive attachment for the Series S now Xbox cases will require a logo that says works with Series S disc attachment
4:45 triggered my fight or flight instincts
PS2 and Gamecube are the best cases to date. PS3 is up there though.
I agree for NTSC ps2 games. The PAL version are so ugly and basic with basic white spines and cover art sometimes
4:20 i love scott's collecting impulses
scott is laying on his stomach and kicking his legs while filming this and dont let anyone tell you otherwise
Just hearing Scotts voice makes me smile
I have been waiting for this video for the last few years when I jumped back over to Xbox.
They made a xbox?!?!?
Her: Is he thinking of me?

I really loved seeing Scott swearing censored.
*Gamers [probably]:* Well, the Xbox's naming conventions are really all over the place, but at least nothing else about the brand can get so weird
*Microsoft:* Oh man, check _this_ out!
If they didn't require so much force to remove it wouldn't be a problem.
Xbox One should've been simply called Xbox 720 lol
@@Dash120z for real! I thought the same
The most infuriating case change was Dreamcast going from white to black
The Genesis era absolutely destroys this. Nearly every year they changed the size and location of the Genesis logo on the spine. To boot, one year they decided to squeeze the UPC on the spine too! Sega developed games are in a black grid style while third party developers where whatever colour they wanted to do. In about '94 they changed to a red spine for every game, then changed from clamshell cases to cardboard. It's the most nonsensical and confusing thing to see.
Scott, you are always a bright spot on any day. Legend.
Xbox cases are like the mirror verse of your usual video game cases out there .
Red Dead Redemption got that treatment as well and Fallout New Vegas I think.
Had an experience with these the other day. My sister bought FIFA pre-owned for the Xbox ONE downstairs and it was sold as an Xbox One version as shown on the box and the receipt (not the smart delivery version) but the disk in the case was the version exclusive to the Series X... Obviously it created confusion and they had to go back out and return it for the correct version.
that's what happens when the cases and discs are identical
FIFA and COD are the worst for this, especially since they are massive sellers.
I needed a video like this
As someone who works at a store that sells video games, I have been talking about this for *ages*. The xbox cases are so weird
Always shocking to see physical games i mean digital sales are 77% today. I got sick of physical in the 90s such a pain the ass
