    The only problem with this design is that because you wrapped the chain around the wheel well, the gear ratio is much larger, so you gain less distance when you petal. You would spend alot more energy riding this bike than any other bike. Other than that, the design is really futuristic, it gives me a Tron vibe. Great work.

    The other issue is bearing noise. The metal on metal sound of the wheel on the bearings. Also didn't see him shift gears or go off road. I imagine mud if ridden off-road is a issue too. Dirt don't do well going between smooth surfaces . But you designed a great show bike and conversation piece.

    • @lewis72
      @lewis72 2 роки тому +1

      It's an off road bike but as soon as you go through any deep muddy puddles the bearings and drivetrain will be screwed.

      Front wheel is fine you can use bearings
      Back wheel also fine but very inefficient imo cuz the circle that the chain goes around is way bigger than the gear at the pedals powering it
      That’s what I thought when looking at the thumbnail

  • @Thrasher1334
    @Thrasher1334 3 роки тому +1094

    The fact that the chain has to go around the whole tire is a terrible idea because it takes more effort to complete a full circle, just look how fast he peddles and how slow he goes. you need smaller gears so it makes the tire spin more per pedal. With this design it takes multiple pedals to complete a cycle
    Looks cool though

    I was intrigued by this, because I was thinking of something similar for one of my projects.
    At first I was concerned about the lack of brakes, but then noticed the brake disc on the intermediate layshaft / gear set, because after some thought, it was exactly where I expected to see it.
    What I still can't work out is the attachment of the large rear sprocket wheel [ presumably another custom cut part ] to the rear wheel rim, and why that fat tyre doesn't rub against the chain, & push it off the sprocket.
    Any ideas, or working hypotheses greatly appreciated.

    This video has given me plenty of insight on hubless vehicles. There are plenty of flaws in the idea, that are not present in regular bikes, which makes this idea hard to justify in real life. Sure, the build is fantastic and manages to address most of the issues inherent in the hubless bike idea, but those are still workarounds specific to this build. The most jarring issue for me would be the fact that there is one less mechanism shielding the rider and the components, which are more numerous and more fragile, from shocks in the ground, which was mitigated by using a fat wheeled bike, whose tyres absorb much more impact than other bikes. Second off is the effective removal of an entire axle from the drivetrain, which messed up the force multipliers involved. The bike is painfully slow, and while I can bet it is a breeze to climb up hills with, you aren't likely to get much speed out of it. This bike wouldn't have functioned at all without that second gear he added at the end, and in his final demonstration you can notice he had to speed up the footage to appear to move at regular speed. Basically, it is a really cool vanity build, but not really practical.

    • @eekee6034
      @eekee6034 3 роки тому +8

      Good point about the shocks and fat tyres. As I'm just starting to think of such a build, I needed to know that. Thanks.
      Gears I already know; you're quite right, and thanks for pointing out the sped up footage. I'll have it a bit easier. I'm planning a reclining vehicle which will give me more room to sort out the ratios. Hublessness will still limit the space for gearing, but I'll have about a meter or so of length to play with.

    edit: this is mainly to point out the pros without hitting the con straight on the nose as respect to the amount work put in. The guy only had the gears, chain/pedal gear and cassette/cog from a normal bike to work with. Otherwise I would imagine he can make a bike with much better gear ratio and maybe even ability to change gear, depends on resources and design. (for those curious, hub is just the round pipe thing at center of the gear circle/wheel. In this version, the hub is moved and is no longer spin in a 1:1 ratio to the wheel (conventional bike). So it is hubless if you just focus on the wheel, but still has a hub over all, it just moved to elsewhere.

But I don't understand what is the problem that is being addressed by all this effort? How can we better use these creative minds , since they are clearly getting bored!. Improved drive train or gearing ratios???? Your thoughts welcomed

      @JyogiPL 3 роки тому +48

      @@XIskandarX I don't know mechanics well but I would ask myself. How durable and resistant to break it is - you have high forces in one point. If someone more sturdy uses it might just break on the first curb. Chains are very tense and power transmission - you would need to calculate how energy efficient it is. Also, there is a loud music as background so you can hear how ball bearings act. Next, for me it's just to many parts - consider something breaks. I think there lots of other things that people who know mechanical engineering would point out. ( @always eatinpotatos is mentioning more in the comments in other thread)

    And WHY. are these not on the market, despite many incarnations over the past 20 years?
    Answer:
    1. Minimal capability of variable gearing.
    2. Wheel strength entirely dependent upon the rim strength = heavy wheels, poor acceleration and climbing
    3. Ride qualities will be very poor due to minimal bump compliance. Very rough ride. Fat tyres to compensate only make for greater weight and poor acceleration.
    4. No capability to mount racks and panniers to carry any luggage.
    5. Braking and stopping? 🤔

      Not necessarily. You do not use a full ring of bearings. You can but it would weigh more, cost wildly more and the seals would e harder to maintain. But a 3-5 sealed bearings. 3-5 sealed bearings may weigh more but it is dismissible compared to those giant moon bike tires. Any hubless/spokeless system would NOT be any louder (noisier) than with an axle and spokes. You may be thinking non-pneumatic tires on that one. Also, a few sealed bearings can be repaired or replaced pretty easily. The Bearings would be sealed against the elements just as they are now. So that is not a big concern either.
      (Edit: Sorry I was thinking of a fully engineered and produced hubless/spokeless wheel system. Not a DIY set-up. My bad. Should have watched it all the way through first.)

      It's meant to be a proof of concept and a cool little art project. The engineering challenges he overcame are nothing to scoff at either.
      It's much more of a concern if he were to claim unrealistic benefits or try to sell the design with false claims.

      Also would foul up the chain very fast, even in relatively dry weather, as it sits way closer to the ground. And it's probably a lot more sensitive to dings compared to a regular spoked wheel. At the same time, it would take a lot more force to ding that thick steel ring.

    So what fascinated me the most by this build is that huge sprocket on the rear wheel. Could that be modified to fit the rim of a regular tire? Like in addition to its regular gears. Because with the right gear ratio and an ac generator, that would make an excellent restorative charging system for e-bikes, to utilize some of the momentum of the bike or energy spent peddling, to help recharge some of the battery reserves. Obviously its not free energy, as the generator will be taking energy from the over all system of the movement. But if your were able to engage and disengage it as needed, you could utilize coasting down hills as a way to get a quick recharge as needed. Or opt to peddle a bit harder to charge the battery, while you still aren't tired, so you could take a break later. But with the right gear ratio, like this one, I don't think it would take a significant amount of effort to gain back some charge.
