My husband and I, both painters in BC, Canada, have followed you for a couple of years. You explain your technique so thoroughly right down to the brush size and colour mixes you are using. Love your channel with fabulous paintings, soft easy voice, and excellent video work. Thank you for all of this.
Absolutely beautiful seascape! You are the best teacher I have seen. I am a retired elementary school teacher and one of the most important lessons I was taught by my professors was,” Never assume your students already know something. Don’t skip steps.” You seem to have mastered this concept. You include information that many seem to skip. Thanks so very much for using your wonderful gift and sharing so generously. You also have a gift for teaching. God bless you, always.
Thanks Patricia, yeah I always make every video as if the viewer was watching it for the first time. I also don’t assume that people know what I know either. Thanks for watching, hoping to get the next video out soon. 😊
I have followed many seascape tutorials in youtube, and I am greatly inspired by your painting style especially your brush strokes in painting the details. I simply love the way you paint. I hope I can paint like you one day.
Watch less and paint more. Good art is the outcome of some talent + a huge amount of dedication. Which means you have to paint every day as long as you can. Watching 10,000 videos will just teach you a few basics. Art is spend time doing it, not watching others do it
Jackie Garroutte yes, I do. As far as I’m concerned, the problem when I started was to learn about value. I painted dozens of paintings in scales of greys. To use colours is the easiest part. It just takes time experimenting. Another thing that will help the inexperienced painter is to use a very limited palette. The more colours, the trickiest to not have muddy colours as the result of mixing.
I watched you on one of Andrews videos, so I was happy to see your video pop up in my feed, so I subbed. I just started painting again after 20 years, so folks like you and Andrew are Godsends for us noobs!! Thanks for your guys hard work and being mentors for folks like me!
Hi Samuel Thank you so much for making available your instructions and being able to copy the paintings that accamny them. "God Bless you for sharing your God given talent
Many many thanks to you for ur wonderful teaching lessons , i have watched many painting lessons before but nobody dared to describe the details of the colors mixed to get a particular tone , god bless u samuel , hats off to u sir!
Thanks Shahzad, really glad you like my videos. I'm in the process of making more videos at the moment and I'll explain more of the colour mixing and use of tone. Stay tuned :)
I am a regular viewer of yours and Andrew Tischlers videos... U both have some common methods in painting and really give explanations in detail.. Both of are great artists..good work..
Thanks. Actually Andrew and I are good friends and he mentored me a few years ago, so he taught me some of his painting methods. Andrew is also one of my favourite landscape painters. Thanks for subscribing 🙂
Wow! Three minutes in and I was already blown away. That's EXACTLY the kind of information I always wanted to know but no one has ever described before, let alone done so with such eloquent simplicity and clarity. I certainly didn't know enough to be able to ask. I feel like you've opened up a whole new world for me. Thank you so much. I'm going to enjoy trying out this painting, but first watching some more of your videos :)
I've been using watercolour for around 40 years and am now going into oil, as I should have too many years ago. Finally I've discovered somebody who not only speaks English but efficiently conveys everything you need to know or look further into. Also, your painting is in a style that I like and is not too far away from my approach and choice of subject. I forgot to buy lamp black in the shop yesterday so was pleased you don't use it. I tend toward ultramarine and b. umber, not much call for black in my world. So I will be watching everything you put up and, if it's no bother, may ask for snippets of advice from time to time. Many many thanks.
Thanks Bob, I'm glad you like my videos. With regards to black I never used pre made black as it deadens the colours. It's better I think to mix your own black using something like ultramarine blue and burnt umber, also as I use these colours throughout my paintings anyway, they colours are more harmonious and cohesive as the painting contains common colours. Feel free to email if you would like any advice with your paintings: art@samuelearp.com
This seascape is beautiful! It looks very challenging and a bit overwhelming. I may try it on a small canvas, and definitely take my time. I paint in acrylics and sometimes oils. I appreciate that you break each mixture of colours down. It's helping me a lot. Thank you!
Thanks Isabela, yeah try painting it on a smaller canvas, the advantage you have using acrylics is that they don't take long to dry, so if you make a mistake you can just paint over it.
Thanks Samuel. Beautiful painting and an excellent and helpful commentary. Thanks especially for taking the time to be specific and orderly. Best regards . Susan
Just came upon this in the nick of time. I'm doing a master study of Frederick Judd Waugh and this helped a great deal. Thanks very much for a great video. Take care.
that s really helpful, honest video from a true hearten person. thank you will be less than what you shared with us. wish you all the best for your future.
Que aula maravilhosa. Você é incrível. Mostra todas as misturas, que Deus te abençoe e que você continue nos ensinando e dando essas maravilhosas lições.
Thank you for giving very helpful explanations.I would agree there are only a few among you great artists who provide meaningful insights as you paint. You and Andrew are awesome teachers! I am inspired by your works.
Thanks Laura, yeah Andrew makes great videos, he actually helped me a lot with my own painting and we ran a couple of 'en plein air' art tours in New Zealand in 2016. I'm so thankful to Andrew and so I'd like to help people with their painting the way artists like Andrew have helped me.
Thanks for this tutorial, I have been looking for detailed work on rocks for seascapes and had just asked Andrew about one. This is a life-line for me right now, thanks again!
Just recently found your channel. Your work is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you so much for the fantastic details about brushes & colors . . . and bless you for adding written referral information.
