How to Paint TRANSLUCENT OCEAN WAVES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 січ 2020
- One thing I often get asked about with my seascape paintings is how do you paint the translucency of a breaking ocean wave? Well it is not as difficult as you might think.
In this video I give you some tips on painting ocean waves and how to achieve that magical translucency in the water as the sunlight shines through it. I also give you some general tips for painting seascapes.

I love painting the ocean ! Great job on that painting..... Al
Thanks Al 😊
Wonderful work thanks a lot !,
Thanks Carmen 🙂
Beautiful seascape & you make it look so easy! I've noticed several of your paintings are done on smaller, square surfaces. I mostly use 16 x 20 and after having to take a break for a few yrs, I'm finding it a bit daunting to begin or complete a painting. After seeing how much you can do with these smaller sizes, I think that may be the key for me to get back into the flow. I used to paint almost every day. I truly love oil painting & have missed it terribly so I'm excited to try this. Thank you for all you share. It's so very inspiring!
Hey Dee, thats awesome you are going to start painting. Yes I like painting on smaller surface as well as large ones. I personally don't like spending weeks or months on a painting which is the advantage of small paintings as they don't take as long to paint. Thank for subscribing 😀
Love how you explain everything in such an easy way to understand!! Great video!!

Wonderful scenery & painting! I will try in water miscible oils. Jeanne

I also like to paint on toned canvas. painting is much simpler because it is easier to determine the color value. great tutorial. Well done!
I agree with that and I paint on a toned canvas for the same reason. Thanks 😊

@@SamuelEarpArtist your work is wonderful Samuel. I've been watching all of your videos since you've started.
Thank you so much for posting these videos and sharing .
I have been teaching myself for a few years now and it's a never ending learning process.
I have all the books by E. John Robinson on painting the ocean, he studied the sea for 40 yrs.
Being a visual learner you always bring many topics to light.
I thank you for that.
If you have time Samuel could you please give a lesson on a nocturne ocean waves....please with moonlit. Thank. You so much .
New Sub, I have just found this channel and it is very interesting, as you seem to give more than other channels. I am talking about the written notes and advice on drawing before painting. (I have never tried this method) I look forward to more videos.
Thanks Douglas, welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy the videos 😊
samuel du malst super!!!
Danke 🙂
Samuel thank you for posting all of your videos and sharing so much . Your really masterful painting the sea...so beautiful ...
Can I ask you what series is your dagger at 9:02? Is it the ivory or a synthetic...
I too use the rosemary brushes, I don't have a dagger and not sure which type of bristle is good to render tree leaves and such. If the ivory or synthetic?
Thank you Samuel your very kind.
We are watching one of the greats seascapes artists of our time...
Please if you have time could you paint a sunset....and moonlit nocturne....I would appreciate it so...there's no artists lessons on UA-cam with waves...oceans.
Beautiful piece...love the clouds as well....
Very Helpful. Do you always use those colour mixes?
Thank you for listing your Patreon site. Kathy
Thanks Kathy, I’m just about to begin editing the next full-length Patreon video which I will upload next month. You get instant access to all my videos, bonus content and a new video every month all for just $5 per month 😊
10:57 nice rendering of the back sea action...the foreground is really wonderfully done...the foam looks so realistic....
Many artists don't capture the "weight of the water " ...which is important...also so many artists neglect painting trickles of water over the rocks...
Ah 11:32 bristle dagger...is it the Ivory bristle? Thank you Samuel for your time. Really appreciate it.
Thanks. The 'weight of the water' is a good way to describe it. I was using ivory daggers in this painting, they are so versatile 🙂
Wow this is so amazing, l like it very much, you have new follower my friend...👌🖼😊🙂👍👏🖌

How about a sunset? Thank you!
Yes, good idea, I will do this 😊
Another great tutorial Sam - it would help if you stated if you were using oils or acrylics.
Thank Eric, good point, I realised I forgot to say I was using oil paints but I'll make sure to ay what paints I am using in the next videos. You can use acrylics for all my paintings featured in each video, the principles of colour and tone are the same 🙂
Amazing painting, can I just ask, how long do you leave between layers when painting this piece?
Thanks Mark. I am using Liquin Original as a medium which speeds up the drying time so I can leave it a day or two between layers. I had other paintings I was working on when I painted this so I ended up leaving it longer. Just make sure your painting is touch dry before you apply the next layer 😊
Oh!.
Hi Sam! Just discovered your channel, love the way you explain everything!! I’m assuming you are using oils, not acrylics? I love oils, but have switched to acrylics because I’m Using a spare bedroom in our house as my “art studio.”
The biggest problem, and best advantage, with acrylics is that they dry too fast!
Hi Sheila, glad you are enjoying the videos. Acrylics definitely dry fast and it can be a problem, however if it was a choice between using acrylics or not painting at all I’d use acrylics 😊
Супер!!!
Спасибо 🙂

Thank you so much 😊
Can you show us how to paint the first timelapse of you painting a similar sea scape of Piha.
It would be greatly appeared :)
Hey Nathan, unfortunately I no longer have the original video footage. I think I must have accidentally deleted it. I originally painted that seascape in 2015 and I’ve bought a new computer since then so I think that’s when I lost the video footage. Sorry about that!
whats the size the bristle dagger brush you was using, please
Hi Lara, it's a 1/4" dagger brush 😊
Samuel tu dessines toujours ton paysage avant de peindre? Merci tes vidéos sont magnifiques le problème c'est que mon anglais est assez approximatif ! Isabelle
Bonjour Isabelle. j'utilise Google Traduction. Oui pour toutes mes peintures d'atelier, je crée toujours une composition dans mon carnet de croquis d'abord.
Please help can I use the French Ultramarine for the waves or should it just be Ultramarine Blue?
Hey Denise, French Ultramarine will be just as good. In response to your question I did a little research as I always thought these two colours were the same but it appears there are some subtle differences between the two. Regardless you can use either blue for seascapes, skies, rocks and shadows in general 🙂
LOOOOOVVVVE Your work!!! Is there any way I can buy a print on canvas of this painting? Thank you so much!
Thanks Victoria. I don’t have any prints available of this painting but I do have a few seascape prints left over from when I was selling them. I am away at the moment but I can show you what I have available when I get back home next week. Do you have an email address I can contact you on, or alternatively you can email me at: art@samuelearp.com
Thanks 😊
Hey, Samuel!
How much has plei air painting/exercise helped you when it comes to creating a studio painting based only on photoreference?
Have you ever created a painting using more than 2 layers of glazing? Renato Muccillo uses glazingtechnique alot, especially when painting clouds, to get that deep glowing effect.
I really like most of your work, and some of your compositions are really great. I have never seen your work in real life, and I am aware that many of the effects, like colour nuances, value and "glow", will not be adequately represented on a computerscreen.
Still, with all due respect, when I compare your paintings to for example your friend Andrew or Mr Muccillo, your paintings seems to "pop" less ..... they seem to have a more "chalky" or "subdued" quality. Am I right about this? And if I am, what can you do to change that?
I hope you appreciate constuctive criticism :)
Love your videos, man.
Eleo (Norway)
Hi Eleo
Some very interesting questions you have asked there and I will address them.
Plein air painting in my opinion has massively improved my painting skills and has helped me to better mix colour and understand the tonality of the landscape. I am now to the point that I won't begin a studio painting unless I have painted it en plein air first. The other advantage to plein air painting is you start to get to see common colours and values landscape within it that you can apply to most landscape paintings. This is especially helpful for studio painting. It also helps to loosen up your painting style and complete studio work more quickly. Personally I don't like spending weeks or months on one painting.
With regards to glazing, I hardly ever do it. I used to do I lot of glazing years ago but then I realised that I was compensating for the fact that my tones, values and colours weren't working properly.
If you are comparing my work to Andrew or Mr Mucillo you have to understand I am a different painter. There is no doubt that I am inspired by Andrew's art work, he is one of my favourite contemporary landscape artists, he also mentored me and he is my best friend. I like Renato's art work too but for my style of painting it wouldn't work and would be too much detail and too polished. I don't think Renato paints outdoors as I can see it in his work, I could be wrong of course and it's not a criticism. He does produce some stunning painting.
I'll be honest there are not many contemporary studio painters that really grab me. Andrew is an exception but he also paint en plein air and it shows in his works.
Aside from Andrew most of my favourite contemporary painters are are plein air artists. I am especially inspired by the art works of Frank Serrano (check out his Instagram), Scott Christensen, Joe Paquet and John Crump. They are all plein air painters and it shows in their studio work too. They all have a brilliant skill and command of mixing vibrant natural looking colours and they understand the tonality of the landscape. Their compositions are good and their brush work is more loose bringing an aliveness to their paintings. You can spoil a composition by having too much detail.
With regards to my own paintings I consider mine to be more honest and less stylised. I am trying to find a balance between loose 'painterly' brush work and a bit of fine detail. I want to retain an aliveness to my work. I'm still learning, experimenting, trying new things and loving the process.
I hope this makes sense, thank you for your feedback and questions, it's always appreciated.
Cheers
Sam
Hey, Sam!
Everything you wrote makes sense, and I appreciate your feedback.
I have only painted for a very short time (about 4 years), and I am trying to find a way of doing things that is more efficient, because like you, I don`t really like spending weeks on one painting. But since Im not as experienced as you, there is alot of back and forth adjusting things like values and colours. In other words, there are to many hours wasted on things I could have avoided by for example making a colour/value sketch beforehand.
These days I try to stick out a plan of how to engage a paintingproject, where the goal is to be more loose, playful and make the whole prosess a fun experience.
I do like the way you paint, and the fact that you have found your own artistic expression. Even though you have had Andrew as your mentor, you still have your own style and uniqueness. I would not have watched your videos if that wasn`t the case, so cheers to you, mate! :)
I have probably asked this question before, but how many paintings have you painted without reference material?
I believe its a great way to build up a strong sense of artistic "intuition", especially when it comes to landscape painting. It makes you continuously test your abillity to connect emotionally with subtle changes. The evidence that it works, is when you can feel you are "there". Its all about synchronizing the impressions that we already have stored in our brain, and I find that very exciting.
But, of course, it takes more time than to have reference material, and it is in someways much more challenging.
Anyway, keep up the great work, Sam, and know there are people like me who really appreciate what you are doing.
Cheers
Eleo (Norway)
Thanks I will definitely check out this artist for sure. I’m always keen for artist recommendations 😊
Hey Eleo
Thanks for your reply. With regards to paintings and reference material I have used reference material for all my paintings. Obviously if I’m painting en plein air the reference material is right in front of me. I use my plein air paintings a reference material for studio paintings as well as photos.
I’m pretty sure I could paints some landscapes or seascapes off the top of my head as I have painted so many 😊
Cheers
Sam
I bet you can, Sam, and it would have been interesting to see you do that. :D
Have a good one
Eleo
What are the techniques of plein air painting as I always do sketching before start a project. Is it bad to do a sketch first ?
Hey Salvat, it's always good to do a pencil sketch before you begin a painting so that is a good habit to get into. Plein air painting is painting outdoors from life. The aim is to capture the mood, atmosphere, colours, tones and values when you paint outdoors. You can then use your plein air paintings as studies for studio paintings 🙂
Helou
Do you do this in watercolor?
Not in watercolour. It’s been years since I’ve used water colour as I used to paint botanical art works. I intend to paint these again in the future. I have also just bought som gouache paints so going to try these out too 😊
Samuel Earp Artist
I am really interested to see you painting in watercolor I really like your style
I was hoping you'd say oil or acrylics. Will we ever know? 😁
Hi again... I was wrong!... because I left you a message in other or your videos asking you permission to copy the risk at the left of your painting... those close to the seaguls... hahaha... the other painting doesn't have risks!!!
Love it.
Thanks Dianne 🙂
