An extremely well-lettered therapist told me about Mr. Conte. Years now I've stayed clued-in. This man really knows his stuff, and it helps indescribably that he has a great yet gentle heart.

Dr. Conte, Thank you for sharing this powerful anecdote. For many years, I have struggled with mental stress due to the toxic environment I have been around. I agree that we cannot control what others think about us nor can control people's actions. My concern is that if we let toxic people continuously get their way with our silence or shrug it off, they will continue to get their way. What if I stay silent or think to myself "is that so?" how will things change? It is okay if these toxic people continue to wreak havoc on others psychologically? I want to put a stop to this permanently so as a manager, what strategies do you suggest that let the person/people know that their behavior is not acceptable while maintaining a positive atmosphere?

The book Open by Andre Agassi was an eye opener in the same sense. The way he was judged by the majority, while he was fighting his own fights was so unfair. I never liked hearing people having opinions about people they think they know from TV, but have actually never changed two words with them... So ugly...

Hi Dr, love your videos ty, I always believe that rumors are not facts and I always consider the source, I know what kind of person it takes to start such gossip and I let it be, when you know it’s false information and your innocent this will not affect you regardless of the content, when you believe in yourself and your confident, this is not your problem and let it be, I like the reply you explained it shows your innocent and confident, ty, Bob,

My anger toward something is complex. Has anyone ever gotten so _tired_ of someone they see constantly? I feel we see my mom's sister more than my two other aunts (marital), and I think I'm annoyed because...they're my favorites over the maternal aunt. I get to see the aunt I'm most annoyed with (secretly) than the aunts I enjoy, and I guess I feel that's not fair. It's her, her, her, her, her. Sisters can be SO annoying, especially as moms (with their sisterly comparisons). Besides, I think I resent their relationship a bit because I'm a brother with only sisters, and I feel brothers are less important than sisters? You know, brothers are for brothers and sisters are for sisters? This is a partial reference to our not seeing my mom's brothers as much, so it's sisters before misters. Like I said, it's complex. Is it possible I'm feeling is actually normal, so I'm not being an irrational bigot toward my one and only blood aunt (without her knowledge)?

But how did the story end? Did the Zen Master give the baby back? I mean he spent a year raising it. Should of said "Is that so" and shut the door lol.

Often there is truth in rumors. If you accept your own darkness and begin diving in, you may change for the better and when that happens the rumors will stop or will shift into wow have you seen their transformation?! Rumors are insight. The rude things others say to us when angry are insight. We can accept them as gifts and work through our issues or continue to ignore what others can plainly see and blame them for our problems. Sometimes it takes time for others to notice or accept our change. We have to be patient.

I'm sorry but I don't think your take on this is very helpful.
When you have people who judge you based on false assumptions and go out of their way to bully you with not just words but regularly taking actions to actively hurt you and make your life more difficult and miserable... saying "is that so" doesn't help. I don't want to eat whatever shit they throw at me and act like it's all good. I want to fight back to protect myself against injustice and terrible toxic people. I want to let them know that if they tread on me, they're going to get bit.
I think many people who bully or hurt others based on false assumptions keep doing it because the people they hurt either run away or lay over and let themselves take the beating. If more people fought back and hurt those whoever hurt them, they would think twice before hurting others.
A cactus grows thorns to protect itself. Snakes only bite when threatened and hurt.

On a more serious note, I feel there is some truth to your comment. But I also feel there is truth to Dr. Christian's lesson. I hope Dr. Christian will offer some insight into this dilemma.

    • @DrChristianConte

Thank you for watching this and taking time to comment. One of the challenges of making videos is that people can literally focus on what a video doesn’t say (which is infinite), but when that happens, there can be no end to what is insufficient about content in any given video. This video contains a light-hearted Zen tale about not getting wrapped up in other people’s “cartoon world” certainties, it does not say to never stand up for yourself or to never share your side of the box. It does not advocate for allowing others to walk all over you; it is simply one teaching story that many of us can use in particular circumstances to help us avoid taking other people’s faulty assumptions personally. Of course there can always be infinite assumptions about what this (or any) video doesn’t say, and each person will approach all videos they watch with his or her own projections, and that’s perfectly okay. What a gift that we all get to see the world from different angles. Which is why, again, I send you complete gratitude for taking time to watch something I created and put effort into a thoughtful response. And always - I am most definitely sending you much peace! 🙏🏼
PS. In my book Walking Through Anger, I show how you can confront any conflict head on, so I would love for you to check that out, especially if you’re in a space where you’re looking for ways to be assertive toward those who speak untruths about you.

@@DrChristianConte I see your point regarding focusing into what people don't say. However, I disagree that the Zen tale you shared is purely a light-hearted story.
The Zen master accepted the responsibility of caring for an infant even though he was not the one responsible for bringing it into the world. He allowed others to burden him with extra responsibility, which resulted in loss of time, financial loss, and probably loss of sleep too.
Now if he didn't mind childcare at all then I could see how this wouldn't have mattered, but if he did, then in this case he is most definitely letting others impose their wills on him without defending himself. The only reason he stopped having to care for the infant was because the girl had a change of heart... that doesn't always happen.
I know part of this is still focusing on what a story is not saying. I'm assuming what the process of raising the infant was like for the Zen master. But we also know what raising an infant is like because anyone with a family knows. It's a very reasonable assumption.
Oh and btw, I'm not writing these form a place trying to demonize or attack you. I like most of your content and found it helpful. I just disagree with you regarding this point and wanted to raise a concern
