    A very helpful thing that you could have added to the video was to show the Settings in WSJT-X, specifically for the Radio Tab in Settings and the Audio Tab in Settings. Also if there are certain settings on the computer that need to be adjusted, such as in the audio settings.
    Thanks for a nice video otherwise.

    HI Paul, my Elmer's explained to me when I came to that point with my BITX 40 that I need to make an "Isolated Audio" interface. It's necessary to isolate the computer from the radio so as not to create a ground loop that can pick up and or radiate noise. And there is the difference in voltage potential between the two things that could lead to zapping the sound card circuitry when being connected. When I made mine I borrowed from the Easy Digi schematic on every sellers site and used a USB sound card for further protection that I can also use with a Raspberry PI which is lacking a useful sound card for this purpose. Anyway the most useful purpose of those expensive interfaces is that they are isolated circuits for better performance and equipment safety. Easy Digi could be a good electronics video too for many non-hams who work with audio and want to avoid ground loops there too. Thanks for listening to my 2 cents.

      John, no problem and thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it. Now I am new to ham radio. Got my tech and general in February of 2018 and my Extra in Sept. 2018 so I certainly do not know all about radios. In fact I am a noob in that arena. I can see the point of what your Elmer told you and it makes makes perfect sense.
      From my point of view an an E.E. the PC is grounded at my household earth ground. The radio power supply is grounded there also, and my antenna is grounded to an 8ft copper clad steel rod in the yard that is bonded to my house ground. i would say, in my opinion, they are all at the same potential. But I may well be wrong and Im going to do some research on this issue. Thanks again for pointing it out.

      @@learnelectronics I may have overlooked a detail, I thought you we're using a Laptop, which isn't always connected to ground because of portable battery power use sometimes. Your star topology of grounding is great, but you should also try to avoid ground loops through equipment. Also, I'm interested in hearing about the FT-450D as I have heard it provides the best bang for the buck in a beginner radio. It's on my wish list. But the IC-7300 does seem way more popular, but how much better is it really?

You have said in your video that the 6-pin DIN to the two 2.5mm jack connecters is all you need and there is nothing fishy going on and that you are showing us everything. Actually, you haven't shown us that you need a CAT connection for PTT transmit which isn't included through the DIN connection. Also, what is the software you are using?

I am trying to make it work with the Digi-vox feature on the radio. My digital-vox PTT does turn on and off with sounds from the computer soundcard, which I discovered by accident. In the WSJT-X software itself however, when you click the tune button, it causes the radio to transmit but when you click the button again, it will not stop transmitting at all. I cannot figure out why. I've tried everything and on the verge of giving up. Wondering if you can help? Thanks in advance

      @@avaughan585 Late to the game on this, but you want to adjust DVOX, not VOX. DVOX applies to the rear data port; VOX applies to the front mic port. Found this out when I bought a device from overseas that is essentially a USB sound interface with integrated cable (it even came in a 3D-printed dongle head). Simple interconnect, no need for CAT switching.

    Just a point to note. This method is for FT-8 ONLY. If you want OTHER digital modes, my best suggestion is the Tigertronics USB Signalink. Also, it is very frustrating to see a video with a title such as this one, suggesting you can do digital modes without an interface. People, saying "Digital Modes", dos NOT exclusivly mean FT-8. Quite frankly, FT-8 is not the end all in digital modes. I have been there and done that, and it has no EMCOMM use. Quite frankly this videos title was "CLICK BATE", for FT-8!

      VOX is a great idea, and it's what I'm going to try when my cable arrives :). Just a note about the FT-450D, if you haven't seen it elsewhere: I *think* you may need to adjust the menu item called DIG VOX (default is OFF), rather than VOXGAIN, depending on the mode you use on the rig. In this vid, you can see WW8PR has the rig set for "plain voice" LSB on 40m (not DATA LSB), so presumably VOXGAIN is the way to go.

    I like your channel a lot and on this one I can not but agree with you, the Icom 7300 is a 1000$ radio (brand new) and it is a SDR radio with immensely more capability then the yaesu 450D. Both directly on the radio controls as well as when connected to a computer.
    It's likely the Icom 7300 does not get the 500$ price range on the used market but the radio sets a new standard on HF and Multiband radio's with totally integrated SDR capability.
    The Yaesu is in deed a great great radio but the "new kid on the block" is indeed the Icom 7300.

      Love my 7300. It has changed the face of amateur radio for ever. It's like aircraft going from ic to turbine. The ability to see a signal, live, changes everything. Folks are dumping their ts-480s , ft-450s, and ic-7000s in droves.

    • @John_Smith__

      @@learnelectronics Yup, for the 1000$ price tag it's indeed a game changer. There were radios like the ic 7300 but for a huge price tag. The 7300 has great capabilities all integrated in the radio and for 1000$. It's actually forcing a lot of others radio to drop the price a lot in the used market. That's why we get a ton of those very very good Yaesu 450D for 500$ and less .. because everyone is saying ..hey ... for 1000$ I get a Band new with warranty Icom 7300 with SDR capabilities and excellent PC interface! So all other good radios out there must drop their prices on the used market. I expect all other name brands to reply to Icom with radios with the same of better capability and for the same or lower price tag of sales pick-up on that segment :) ...

  • @robertwest7633
    @robertwest7633 2 роки тому

    You're missing two key features of the signalink. Once is obviously the PTT feature so as to not rely on VOX for keying. The other is probably more important and that is that the signalink is electrically isolated from your radio. I do not recall (been a bit since i looked inside) if its using optoisolators or audio transformers to accomplish this but it is important.
    That said, just adding an audio transformer to your setup can be done. They're not expensive and can be picked off amazon or ebay or whatever.
    Last point, the signalink isn't cheap but its a pretty good little device. The isolation along with the jumper configuration to allow it to mate with pretty much any radio is very handy as well as the physical dials to control audio levels in and out of the device.

    This model's been around for more than 30+ years they just keep revamping it... funny thing is I really like how simple everything is on this radio I know it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but as a camping/rving radio it seems to fit the bill

    I see you have the IPO in the off position. This means the receive preamp is on. Your impression of this radio will be greatly improved if you turn the receive preamp off. You will see the noise floor go way down. I know it is looks wrong but when IPO is in the off posttion the receive preamp is on. That is why the DSP is not working as good as it should. You are amplifying the noise floor. The DSP makes a BIG DIFFERENCE on CW.

      If you turn the preamp off you aren't you reducing your wanted signal too? I'm just thinking from a DX perspective

    • @learnelectronics
      @learnelectronics  3 роки тому

      Contacts via antenna only, but logging requires internet

    • @joeb3300
      @joeb3300 3 роки тому

      You do not need an internet connection.
      And you can log using the WSJT-x logging software included with WSJT-x unless you want to use something like LoTW.
      However, to run FT-8 you need to be in good time-synch with all other users. Time synch is usually, and most easily, accomplished via a connection to the internet. Newer versions of Windows 10 have built-in tight time synchronization, but with older versions of Windows (I am guessing that you use Windows) you may need to download a free synching program like Dimension4 to achieve sufficient accuracy. You can go to the webpage time.is to see how well synch'd you are. Mine says "Accuracy of synchronization was ±0.011 seconds", (i.e., off by 11 milliseconds) which is good.

    I know this is an OLD video, but for newbies watching, you DO NOT have to buy a sound interface for digital modes, the PC itself has a sound card and they work just fine instead of going out and buying something you really do not need, BUT MAYBE YOU KNOW THIS BY NOW. Older rigs never had a sound card built in to demonstrate my point before these external cards came along, AND by the way you could have just used the "DATA" PLUG socket and wired it direct with 2 or 3 wires into your in/ out audio jacks on your PC. Maybe this will help someone on a very tight budget. Good video for beginners though. 73 de KD6SBR Tom in NV

    As engineers I'm sure we could make this cable right? Unless there is some special stuff baked into the mouldings??? I think the pinout for the Yaesu FT 450D is published somewhere? I have also came to the same conclusion as you - that you can pick up some very nice 2nd hand gear cheap if you avoid the latest sexy SDR rigs. I opted for a FT-950 a little older than yours but very capable around the same price. I'll have to do the same as you for connections of CAT and audio in/out. There is also converters on eBay for about $40 that do it all...
    Next stop: "Poor man's Pan adapter" using RTL-SDR connected to IF inside the radio, you might want to check that and do a video on it.

    • @learnelectronics
      @learnelectronics  5 років тому +1

      You sure could make it. The pinout is in the manual. These days I'd rather buy a cable though. I'm getting lazy as I get older.
