    Very good explanation of the DSP on the Yaesu. I just ordered this rig as my backup and portable for remote work. Plan to use it with a solar setup.
    I have the FT-950 as my base and the DSP on it is the exact same layout and function. I generally run DNR at around 50%, Contour where is simply sounds best to me, Width about 60-70% and then Shift in the center. When I have a signal I am struggling with I narrow the Width and track it down with the Shift. Works great and you can do it in just a few seconds. I have found that pushing the DNR too much only makes it worse but a little does great job.
    Another great trick I learned is that if you invert the contour (make it a peak instead of a notch) you can really zoom in on a signal as opposed to notching out around it. That is done in the menu function for the contour and I moved mine from -10 to a +10. It even changes the readout to show a peak instead of a notch.

    This was very educational for the operation of the DSP feature.

    Great Video. Your explanation, tips and overall teaching style kept me engaged, I found myself taking notes and understood your points with enthusiasm instead of boredom. So many videos out there have these hand held jiggling images with zoom in's that always go out of focus, the person looses their train of thought; and what do we have? A waste of time. Instead: Your explanation made the DSP function on my new rig easier for me to understand and go explore on my own. I can't wait to see your other videos on the 450D. Cheers.

    I have owned the FT-450, FT-450D, and FT950. The D model is a nice improvement over the earlier FT-450. I will probably trade the FT-950 for an FT-1200, but will keep my FT-450D. It's a really nice radio for portable use as well as in shack. Nice and informative video. Thanks. WB4TJH

    Hi,
    This video help me understand the DSP more than the Manual ..Hi Hi . I have always done the same thing .. Just use the shift to fine tune, But I am going to start using and experimenting with all of the DSP.
    On a side note , I love the Ft-450D.. It’s a great entry-level HF rig.
    Thanks for sharing.

    My suggestion is to leave the Contour and Notch OFF... set the selectivity to wide, and leave the DSP off unless you need it.. then a setting of 3 or less will work except in really bad conditions. Try the noise blanker first, before the DSP. Set shift to center and adjust for best quality. In normal conditions you will not need contour peak or knotch.. DX combat maybe different I dont do that.

    I sold all of my cheap radios, the rangers, cobras, unidens and purchase a 450d. (Mars mod ) Man , i tell you one thing. It was worth it. The quality is superior to those chinese brands. Filters, DSP, a real working NB , 25watt AM carrier and 100 watt swing. The only radio i have now.

    I love the 450D, I just wish they would have also implemented an automatic notch filter button like on the Icom IC-718. Other than that, its a great rig for the money and if you have limited space or need portability.

    that control knob for DSP looks very fragile, so much loose looking movement as you use it.

    • @weshoward4301
      @weshoward4301 4 роки тому

      It is a helpful video but, yes, you're correct. There is a metric BOATLOAD of stuff that is behind that control and it is NOT something you want to be spinning the way you would a big VFO knob (as he does a few times). I know, believe me. I didn't cause it, but it had to be replaced on mine early. Under warranty and the service to/from Vertex was PHENOMENAL.
      Just a caution. Be nice to that DSP knob.

    When in the 60 meter mode, how does one go about adjusting the 4 DSP functions (contour, notch, DNR, and width)? The DSP button will allow me to page through the 4 functions, but in 60 meter mode, I can not use the DSP/SEL knob to make adjustments. Can this somehow be addressed through one of the MENU functions?

    • @TonyKD8RTT
      @TonyKD8RTT  7 років тому

      Hi Dirk, unfortunately I haven't used this radio on 60 meters. In fact, I haven't even upgraded the firmware to allow it, so I can't answer that question. Sorry! Perhaps trying Yaesu technical support- they've been helpful to me in the past.

      i would say the 450d every time for a rig that is good for the price,i have one for 1 year and i know it is good how ever if you don,t want the built in A.T.U get an Icom 7200, one warning the microphone you get with the Icom is not very good.so get the 450d it will be all the radio you ever need,as for the bigger rigs more menu items more fancy lights i call that a bubble gum mechine, don,t like the bubble gum part at all ...

    are those adjustmens something you set to where you like and then leave or do you find you need to adjust on a regular basis depending on the day?

    • @jamesbonanno3359
      @jamesbonanno3359 4 роки тому +1

      These adjustments are designed to pull in stations that might have interference and or just a weak carrier. If you have a strong signal none of these controls need to be enabled. If you have a weak signal you can usually start at the width control and adjust that to possibly receive better. The DNR or digital noise reduction control can be dialed clockwise and you will hear less static in the receiver. Take a look at your manual and read it thoroughly they do an excellent job at discussing this IF DSP features on the 450 rig. In summary they are adjusted to help receive weak signals. Hope that helps. 73....KD2PGJ

    Tony,
    I have just had my FT450D for 3 weeks, I don't know if the rig has a problem or just me, I can't get the cs button to work for tune up, all I keep getting is VCC13.4 which is my power supply voltage, it was working about 2 days ago, I have done a full reset but still the problem exists, I'm hoping you might have a suggestion, am I missing something simple,
    Dave

    • @TonyKD8RTT
      @TonyKD8RTT  7 років тому

      Hi Dave,
      Not sure what you mean by using the C.S. button for "tune up." To activate the radio's internal tuner itself, use the "Tune" button (press it once to turn on the feature, and hold it down for a second or two to actually start a new tune). The C.S. button is a button you can manually assign to a particular function by setting it up in a menu. It appears you can assign Tune to the C.S., but I'm not sure why you would need to. Page 16 in the manual should help with using the C.S. button. Hope this helps!

    • @davejones6313
      @davejones6313 7 років тому

      Hello Tony,.
      Thanks for the reply, my tune up method using the CS button is simply I'm using my inv vee for as many frequencies as possible, tuning thru my external manual tuner, I Iike the CS button as it will tx a 10 watt carrier for tuning, quick and less stress on the ft450D for tuning, but for some reason probably too much knob twiddling on my part I have lost that mode, I did get out of the Vcc mode, but now stuck some where else, I think the owner manual will be worn out long before the rig itself, I must admit being a very senior OP, menu systems are not appealing, my last ft817 was great, and also my old TS 130S, I'll even throw in my TS520, fire them up in seconds.
      Anyhow Tony thanks for your suggestions and the video which I'm sure is very helpful for lot of 450d owners.
      Dave

    I've recently bought one of these, but I find the RX audio terrible & muddy; the only way I've found to improve it is to turn the contour fully down to the left.
    Out of the numerous rigs I own, the FT-450D is hands down the worst for receive audio.
    Has anybody else noticed the same poor audio?
