I was the video manager at Ki'm's on St. Mark's Place. I was opening one morning when a slew of Feds came in. They aske me, "Are you Mr. Kim?" Me: "NO! I just work here." Then, they took out all the bootlegs. What a ride working there was.
So..the rumour has it, and I got it from other coworkers who worked there, that you blasted out the back when the feds drew their guns while retrieving the bootlegs .
I worked there from 1998-2001. 2nd floor. I supplied all of the fansub anime. Ordered the toys and helped with some of the videos that were not legitimate. When I ask people now if they knew about Kim's video, and they have no idea what I'm talking about, it's not as fun to explain to them exactly what we were up to there. Really curious to see this film. Spent a lot of time with Mr Kim at that store. Will be interesting to see what footage and who they talk to in this film.
I shopped at the many Kim’s Video stores for 15 years. My favorite being Mondo Kim’s on St Marks with its various floors for music and video. I remained faithful when they closed down and moved to 2nd Ave in a smaller retail shop. The story of what became of Kim’s massive trove of films is now legendary. Last I read was the films were sold and shipped to somewhere in Italy. Looks like this documentary picks up the story. Really looking forward to checking this out.
My go-to when buying dvd's. They didn't care about street date and would have copies for sale about a week before. Copies would be on shelves as soon as they receive shipment even though there's a bit of an upcharge.
@@plipella Fantastic. Yes, it was a feast for the senses. I always paid close attention to the Staff Picks. I;'d read the synopsis and sometimes just buy it blind. Kim's Video helped introduce me to the world of Something Weird Video. I can remember buying nearly 100 titles from Kim's for only $5.00 each...sometimes they were discounted cheaper. Many of those DVDs are now out of print, selling for hundreds.
I went to film school in NYC from 2003-2007 (School of VISUAL ARTS), and whereas I never patronized Kim's Video, I definitely heard of it and felt the love for it.
As a former Kim's employee, it had its up and downs..really enjoyed working with Kim's brother..Nick zedd was one the more crazier employees we had working the video floor .yeah, it was wild ride..lol
I know right? It's cut like a music video, it's trying to establish tension through the flimsiest of on-screen conflicts (a dog barking?), the music drowns out the dialogue and we learn nothing of Mr. Kim or what happens in the doc. They have to find his videos and steal them back, because?... it looks like a good feature despite the trailer, not because of it.
I used to goto Kim's Video on St Marks place in NYC. I loved that place. Back then there was no internet and if you wanted exploitation films or hard to find movies. You went to Kims.
I remember going to the one in Bleeker in the late 90s and picking up records by minutemen, sonic youth, sebadoh, royal trux, pavement and loads more. Wonderful memories of those downtown shops, rocks in your head was great too. Hopefully someone will make a nice book of them all one day and I can hold it and cry 😢
Just watched it and yes that ruined it completely. That and the director trying to show off how many obscure movies he watched. He made it too much about him and the "heist" fake ending almost ruined the complete doc for me

@@miketb1010 wasn't me who skampered. It was the buyer. I just stayed, continued opening and watched them take the whole stash.
@@chippenyc working there had its moments...kim became sooo paranoid after awhile that some days i just didnt enjoy him being around....lol

Saw this at VIFF and it was absolutely incredible, can't wait to be able to watch it again

The trailer is cut terribly. I'm just going to say that, I'm interested in the movie based of Jay Bauman's recommendation.

@@gs8204it's a very good film, but this trailer is appalling.

Honestly if you watch the documentary. It’s cut exactly the same. It filmed and edited like chaos but still tells an incredible story.
Looks pretty cool, can’t wait to watch it

Oh, man, I used to LOOOOVE Kim's Video. They stocked shit you could never find anywhere else----even non-bootlegged stuff. Miss that place.

Looks pretty good
where can i watch the full doc?
Amazon
If you have a Library card, Kanopy.
I met Mr Kim back in 1998.
Nice - bought and sold many titles there over the years (back when).
Disgusting that all those videos ended up damaged in Italy. They should have went to people who gave a crap.
Pity it's not actually about Kim's Video and its founder, but instead, a film bro diary with deliberate 8-bit low-fi Brooklyn sloppiness.
Have you seen it?
