- "Rise" is a song written by Andy Armer and Randy Badazz Alpert, and first recorded by trumpeter Herb Alpert. The instrumental track was included on Alpert's solo album Rise and released as a single in 1979. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in October of that year and remained in the top position for two weeks. Herb Alpert thus became the first (and only) artist to reach the top of the Hot 100 with a vocal performance ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) as well as an instrumental performance. "Rise" also spent one week atop the adult contemporary chart. "Rise" was successful on the other charts: It peaked at number four on the soul chart, and number seventeen on the disco chart. The recording also received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
The most favorite memory of my mother was when my mother, my sisters, and myself were dancing to this song back in the summer of 79. For the first five years of my life my mother was a drug addict, and she had a bad overdose that year. The county almost took us away from her, and the only way she could get us back was if she got clean. She came home, and we turned on the radio...She heard this song, grabbed us, and started dancing. That was the happiest I ever saw her, and there were few times she was happy, but she was so glad to be with us. My mother stayed clean for us, and she never used again. But this song will always be special
God bless you all. Great story!
Mike Chambers thank you!
PAISLEY PRINCESS it’s fab! Xxx
Thank you for being vulnerable enough to share!
PAISLEY PRINCESS That is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your memories. We all need to hear that love does conquer all.
Back in 1980 I put on this song for my 85-year old grandmother, who was raised on a farm in Czechoslovakia. Didn't speak much English, and never listened to music. When the intro started, she perked up and proclaimed, "It makes me want to dance." So, we did!
Thanks, Mr. Alpert.
That is a great memory!

Yes Ken, quite true. It has that 80s beat, very progressive at the time but with the horn. With that element, it then appealed to such a wide variety of people from different generations I think.
Yes! It's 2021. This man is such an outstanding talent. Notorious B.I.G sampled Mr. Alperts music from "RISE" and created one of his biggest hits in the rap genre.
Also heard it in one if the "Blue" songs
Yes he did. And kinda brought it back to life. At least it did for me.

Years ago, I met an electrician who had done work for Herb at his home in Los Angeles. He said that you'd never meet a nicer guy in the world: just a humble, regular guy who treated everyone the same. Without knowing Herb, I'm just not surprised.
I knew a guy who worked at an AM radio station, WLKK AM 1400, here in Erie, Pennsylvania. I worked as a producer during the same time as a weekend producer. This wonderful tune was selected to be his intro music when he came on the air at 6 am every morning. At 6 bells, I would hear NBC chimes, NBC radio news, then the air would be filled with this song and it was epic. It left a lasting memory from a time when I was involved with a great radio station and the people who worked within it.

Your comment made me laugh :)
I listen to this song once a week , I've been doing this for over 36 years !!
I don't think you could pick a better one
I'm sure your heart rate is impacable
the 70 ies is the decade with the greatest music ever made in music business. all genres.
and this is one of the best songs of the decade.
dark side of the moon no one can dispute that. The seventy was Great.
Absolutely! I thought I was the Only One who thought that! Much like previous generations saying the same thing! But Alas Maybe Not? 🤞🏻😌😌
Oh, And it seems like the Summers in the 70’s it was in the air! Just Everywhere! On the Summer Breeze! And Definitely on FM 📻 Radio!!! Awesome 👏 Memories of that!!!
@@lisasaims3007 I would say the 1970s has to be the best decade in terms of music as well...next I would tie the 1980s and the 1960s together.
I strongly disagree! For me it's clearly the sixties. Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Dylan etc.
Seventies were OK IMHO and afterwards it went all downhill from decade to decade...
I remember being 9 years old when this came out. My whole family thought I was strange for listening to jazz. Thankfully everyone just let me be me. 43 years later I still love jazz and especially this song. Classics will always stand the test of time.
Absolutely
I was 10. It changed my life
This tune takes me back to my early childhood in the early 1980s. I remember hearing this on the radio growing up. The tune has such strong emotional vibes to it. It tears me up every time I hear it. Such an outstanding piece of 🎵 there!!!!
You cannot say enough about this man! Genius! Pure genius!! And not to mention all the people he made famous!$ and helped!! I remember listening to this genius when i was a little boy! My parents loved his music! Thanks mr. Albert for the music! And my memories!!
An article about Herb Alpert who is now 83 years young brought me here to reminisce about some of his great songs.
Wowww😍
Alleycat1921 Is he really 83! I’m stunned! It seems like only yesterday...
This is music that makes you feel each beat and note played. Blessed to have been part of it.
Back to when recording meant you were a true musician.
No Auto tune, just real instruments
... and multiple takes 😁😁
Likewise
12/3/2020
... and you HAD to be a true musician!
This also made him the only performer to have a number 1 as an instrumental and a vocal performance.
The man who discovered one of the best female singers of all time!...Karen Carpenter
Mark Sayer wow I did not know that
Mark Sayer absolutely true, that's why they produced with the A&M records, (A) for Alpert BTW
Also coached Chris "Let's Dance" Montez towards the MOR music he later became famous for like "Call Me" and "The More I See You".
Mark Sayer
Yes. He heard Karen on the radio and called her
It took me over 15 years to find this song. I finally found out who made it by using Shazam lol. Theres no lyrics and Googling "Famous trumpet song from the 70s" wasnt working. I am glad that I found it. As a kid they played the heck out of this song on "Black" music stations so I automatically assumed that a brother made this song. It goes to prove that music has no color or boundaries. Thanks Herb A.
*Welcome to the club. Glad you found this tune. Not easy finding jazz music.*
Exactly!
I wasn't looking for it but was surfing for music on my new Audiophile setup. BOOM took me back to riding in the back of Dads old T-Bird in the 70s as a kid.
Lesso of love
Hey bro, i'm a latin guy born and raised in t So Cal, first hears this song on KHJ, in the 70s, I bought the album, still have it, etc. it's beautiful, real music, it makes you feel like dancing and enjoying life, right? Thats a touch of GOD.
Ahhhh, 1979. I was 18 and graduated high school. I can’t say I would like to go back to this wonderful year or any year but I’m thankful for the memories of my youth. God is good
The notes he hits are beautiful
There’s a level of perfection with the notes he chooses
1980 - a US Marine stationed in El Toro, Ca. Use to play this in my WALKMAN while walking my sixteen hour guard duty shifts. Anybody remember the WALKMAN?
Dog, I had a Walkman and played it to death. It even had radio function too.
So that was you, fucking up his firewatch.
Big Dog...... ah yes the Walkman. Good times my friend. Good times!
Big Dog classic
Good memories!!
That moment you realize your parents music was cooler than yours 😢
My father worked for (The real) Sears. The record department was adjacent to the TV and Stereo department. Every time a. New album came out he’d bring it home. This music is the soundtrack of my childhood.
I love your post!
I remember buying 45's at the Sears at the mall.
Thanks for the lovely reminder ❤
Before the mall, growing up in downtown Atlanta, I remember going to the largest department store in the area. It was the Sears. It was, idk 3 or 4 stories. It was huge !

My dad owned a restaurant in Tulsa Oklahoma in the sixties and seventies and had this on his jukebox. This song has been in my head ever since. Love it!
What’s the restaurant? I might know it...
This man is in a class all by HIMSELF... gifted... love this song... forever...
Laura Pabon l
He's a genius
Agreed. But we need to give credit where credit is due. It was composed by Andy Armer and Randy Alpert. Props to the rest of the band too. The bassline kills.
