How to Water Venus Flytraps

- After a decade of hearing this question in the flytrap hobby I decided to try my best to explain how to water this plant. It's very simple- They DON'T need to stand in water, as long as the substrate they are in stays evenly moist. You can sit them in shallow water during hot and sunny weather, and leave them free draining in wetter or colder seasons. It's really not very complicated, just think of their requirement as a houseplant that needs to be slightly more moist at all times.
Wow look at the size of that VFT in the black planter, amazing!!
At last, some good advice in a few simple words! Thank you!
Perfect timing for fall! Thank you and look forward to the next VFT Video
Loved this video , thank you so much being so clear.
Great channel
Liked and subscribed! Thanks for the info! I’m from southeastern NC where the majority of carnivorous plants in the country are native; grew up with many in my environment but this is my first attempt at growing several different species in pots/planters. Thanks again, and “I’ll be back!” Get the pun there? 😉✌🏼
Thank you for your tips! I love these!
Useful information, thanks
Thanks for the information
Very helpful, thanks 🙂
Alright, I’m a new subscriber, just stumbled across your channel, I’m going to give it a shot. Great to see a younger person talking plants. You seem very knowledgeable, I hope to use some of your advice here in zone 8 in Florida. Just ordered two Venus Traps, I currently have bell peppers, jalapeños, Japanese maples(blood good), mandevillas, pansies and poinsettias on my back porch and they are thriving now, before the summer heat and humidity. Will be looking for the next video. Morning sun, afternoon shade.
Thank you. My daughter wants a Venus fly trap. I needed to know. Question > Would it be better since we live in California to have a green house?
Excellent video as always thanks Liguus! I'm in an apartment in a big city so I have mine under grow lights and they've always got about half an inch or less of water in their trays. I haven't had any root rot issues ..... yet.
KENTOSI if your lights are super good the transpiration from a high photosynthesis rate will balance out the amount of water. Problems arise because people keep them flooded on a dim windowsill or in very cold weather.
@@TheBonsaiJungle Ah! Yep that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!
My apartment has central heating so I don't really get "winters" indoors. This is why I put my VFTs/etc in the fridge over winter :-)
I did this last year and they grew just fine afterwards.
Always keep mine in water around an inch from the bottom and always with tap water. Never had any problems.
certain states have mineral free tap water
My plants are like your own in the black pot and i live in WALES and i use tap water and they are spreading beautifully
U must have very mineral deficient water. This is why New York and NJ has the best pizza! Better water! J/K who knows to be fair....
Brand new to VFT. Recieving my first soon. In South Jersey. One of my questions is what if there are days of heavy rain in summer? Should I move them under shelter or let them drain on their own?
Raven Hasenbein they will be fine in the rain, just dump the water tray (if you have one underneath) if it gets flooded.
@@TheBonsaiJungle Wow, thank you for the incredibly fast response!
Ahoj Water for sundews 1.)Can I water my sundews with tap water? 2.)Can I water that boiled and then cooled sundews with water? 3.)ed. Wysłano What water do you use for Drosera callistos ,Drosera anglica?
sir ligs can u do a video on proper division of vft also leaf pulling without growlight only sun light or bright light TIA
ICE BEAR the success rate of a leaf pulling without growlights is very small. The best way is in a bag with water or sphagnum but that will get extremely hot inside if exposed to sunlight.
@@TheBonsaiJungle i gotta disagree with you, I have my plants outside all year round and do leaf pullings from the leaves that are turning black. I bury the rhysome part in the same exact pot as mother plant, about 1.5cm deep. After a month or so, tiny traps start emerging from the ground. I use no growlights, only natural light (direct, full sun 10+ h a day during summer). I had about 70% if not higher success rate that way
Thanks
Glad I found you channel. Yesterday I found a Carnivorous Plant Terrarium at Lowe's that came with a single plastic pot that had both a dormant Venus Fly trap and a Dormant Pitcher plant. I was wondering if it was actually ok to plant both of them in the same pot as the instructions suggest or would it be better to plant them in separate pots? Also, is now a good time of year to even try and grow these plants, or should I wait til it warms up?
I prefer separate pots, however they can grow fine together. Unless its a sarracenia purpurea, I would keep those standing in deeper water unlike other sarracenia species, and they higher water level would just rot the VFT. It's best to keep them outdoors so it's preferable to start growing them once the temp is no longer falling below 45*F.
I get it, but what if i need to water venus in wintertime, i cant just leave him hydrating
If you want to increase your chances of rot the sitting water will do the trick, otherwise its best to water like a normal plant and keep the sphagnum evenly moist.
it really helped me ☺
I had a globe in my Venus flytrap, Wakefield watering Globes you stick into the soil and pour water in it
I took out the globe because I didn't really use it much and there was too much risk of accidentally bumping into it and breaking it since it's made of glass
Roots drink the water so i prefer the tray method instead of top watering
Jess J top watering is fine too, it all sinks down and gets distributed.
If only I could get any of the water that you mentioned...
There is the rain water that I can get but sadly there are no clouds outside.
I just learned we can use water collected from our tumbler dryers. Its distilled water. Is this true. Im sick of buying water. I ordered a tds meter to test it anyway. Just wanted to share this awesome news for people who are sick of paying for water
I have a question, i watered a venus flytrap with boiled tap water 2 days because i didn't have distilled water and the soil was very dry, i did that after a repotting. Is there a problem if i did that but i continuead watering it with normal distilled water or is the plant in danger?
Thank you, very informative, i live in a flat and have a small plant, how do i store it during the winter months ? is a fridge really ok
Will you ever sell any heliamphora divisions?
Hyun Lee yes I list them on eBay every year
My plantlings do not stand up like yours! They lay flat atop the wet soil and end up turning black. The plant store repotted it so it cannot sit in water in a tray. Also, can it be watered with filtered tap water? The plant store was not very helpful and didn’t instruct me on the water type.
(Outside placement) If it rains, should I move it to shelter or is it fine to just leave it there?
David it’s fine to leave them in the rain, that’s what they get in nature. Just dump the tray afterwards I you have a very deep one underneath it.
How do you get it so big and stand up?? My kinda wants to hang down idk why
Mine is wilting, I bought it a day ago and kept in water tray. Should I put it in sunlight to revive?
Hello sir please reply, can i give this plant water of bottel that we buy from Walmart to drink, please let me know
That's what I use and I've had my Venus Flytrap since the beginning of June and they are fine new ones grow weekly.... I'm not an expert but somehow mine are doing just fine with bottled water
About the watering, should the top layers stays moisture all the time as the best for the plant
What temperature should it be in during winter, I have them out in 42 degrees to 73 degrees,73 degrees was the maximum so far, but what temperature should they come inside during winter?
I let mine get down to 30*F but you shouldn’t bring them inside at that point, since average room temp will wake them up from dormancy. Unless you put them in your fridge once it starts dropping below 30 outside. I have a few videos on here about my winter set ups. You can wrap some reptile heating cables around a plastic box and keep in in the garage (a thermostat is extremely helpful in this case so that the heat only turns on at 29*F and turns of at 35*F). Or essentially make a greenhouse in the garage like I did and throw in a space heater that’s regulated to keep it above freezing.
Just got a VFT today. So I should water it every day if it's dry, but if I go somewhere for just the weekend, should I make it sit in water? Just because I'm nervous it'll dry up, but I also don't want root rot.
Thank you!!! I have a tiny VFT. Hopefully I will do everything right and she won't die!
Do I need to "feed" it tho?
She's outside during the day, in the greenhouse, inside at night because we are having some really cold weather for May!
it should naturally catch flies if you have any in your greenhouse, but if not live mealworms or other live creatures will work
Using the tray method, I don’t need to water it from the top ? And also I put my Venus fly trap in somewhat big pot with some other pictur plants, that’s fine right ?
I bought one from a garden centre yesterday but as I repotted it the soil was soaked how long do u reckon I can leave it without water ??
So went I went to put water in my new VT, I noticed it soaked up the water within the hour. Would I add more? Should there be 1/2” of water in the sauce at all times?
how about using an aircon water?
Is it normal for them to close when you water them?
If it splashes them yes, however they will open back up sooner than they would if the caught something
My Venus Flytrap is in the Texan sun for 6 hours each day but then I put it inside. I'm having a hard time knowing how much to water it. Does anyone know what I should do? (I accidentally over watered it recently by using the constant water tray method, and it's a small pot)
If it’s outside in texas it can sit in shallow water (1/3 inch at minimum) for spring-fall.
Do dormancy for zone 6/5?
xXZom GamesXx I am in Chicago so everything I’ve recorded about dormancy on my channel is applicable lol.
Hi i don.t have any direct sunlight in or out of my apartment, will the plant die? Thanks
most likely yes, I encourage you to buy a Yescom 225 white panel
@@TheBonsaiJungle hi ,will have to research that, thanks
Is there a risk of over-watering them if I leave them sitting in a tray of water in the winter/autumn?
Depends on where you live The answer is yes, with colder temperatures, as the risk of rot increases. Here in chicago I would never dream of leaving mine in water during the autumn or winter. I barely let them stand in water during the summer since they don't really need it.
@@TheBonsaiJungle I see. I was worried about forgetting to water them. Guess I'll have to make it a habit then. Thanks for the advice.
Is demineralized water safe for carnivorous plants? I've been to 10 grocery stores and they don't have distilled water.
Hello were you able to find a solution? Going thru the same trouble. Don’t want to make distilled water
How do you keep your plants alive with flowers?
Arya Asylum if they are healthy and in full sun outdoors the flowers are not an issue. Cutting off flowers is recommended because people are usually new, and their plant has been sitting in a store on the brink of death so it’s in no condition to flower. Other people keep them on the windowsill or have watering issues and need to learn the basics before their plant is healthy enough to flower.
Is it an over kill leaving in tray with water and have a tiny humidifier next to it. I have a Venus flytrap with tiny leaves. They are about 2 months old.
Yes
Watering during dormancy period?
Same idea, keep it moist, but it no longer needs to stand in water. The substrate should always feel like a sponge that was just wrung out.
Will deionized water work? 🤔
Yes
I have a question I can’t seem to find anywhere. Since you always have to keep the soil moist is there any risk of root rot since it always sits in water? I’m new to growing VFT’s
From what I understand, yes. There is. To my knowledge, keeping the moss moist but not soaked is key. I think mine are too wet. My traps are growing in… but the older ones are dying quick. Turning black ‘& all that. So I repotted it today after squeezing all the excess water out of the moss to see what happens. I also heard their roots like to grow straight down. And when you’re potting it, to make a little bundle blanket of the moss sort of tightly around the roots and stems down. Creates a snug little spot for them. That advice came directly from my grower.
@@Akx2515 Oh okay, Thank you so much for the advice. I just put enough water in the tray, like less than an inch so that it doesn't really soak the moss too much but just enough to keep it moist.
@@Akx2515 hey, is Primo water from Walmart okay to water my venus fly trap? Please answer 😅
Thank you
Evribodi loves MOISt
Is de ionised good?
yes
@@TheBonsaiJungle thx for the reply!
Do you have a Red Dragon FT?
west yes but I don’t really like them though, many better red cultivars out there that are easier to grow like maroon monster or pink Venus.
@@TheBonsaiJungle thinking of adding one for the collection, it's the only kind red FT in my country on sale. What is the difference between a RD and a regular VFT in terms of growing?
west in my experience the red dragon is more sensitive to being overwatered, and it’s more important that it gets full sun or growlights.
@@TheBonsaiJungle Thank you for this information.
@@TheBonsaiJungle Wow, that's exactly the experience I had with red dragon VFTs. All my other VFTs were doing fine with the tray method, but my red dragons (I had 5 of them) all almost died from rot. I repotted them and gave them less water so they could have drier conditions. They are slowly recovering.
Frankly I think red dragons are overrated. Mine aren't red, they are more the color of a dark red wine. The color isn't as vibrant as other VFTs. Other VFTs are just more colorful.
Can I use spring water?
No
@@TheBonsaiJungle okay thank you!
Mines is distilled purified water is that ok?
Not sure. Sometimes drinking water is distilled for purification and then they add minerals back for taste. Check the label to see if it says “distilled water” or “with minerals added for taste”
@@TheBonsaiJungle it just says distilled and has purified at the top it doesn’t have any added minerals tho
Isaiah Brown should be fine, but I can’t guarantee it without seeing the label myself, or at least knowing the brand to look it up.
@@TheBonsaiJungle is it anyway I could take a picture of it and show you
Can I leave my VFT outside during the winter? We usually have temperatures between 20-40F. Usually around 30F maybe.
I'm a new Venus flytrap owner live in a apartment with disabilities
good luck growing them
mORE vIDZ !!!
im using bottled water
then its gonna die you bozo
@@KillowPillow lol can u use water from a dehumidifier??
Feed me...I'm hungry
Dormancy care for zone 7
Jess J insulate well with mulch, heated greenhouse, or store in a garage that won’t get much below 30*F.
@@TheBonsaiJungle but will i need to install a grow light or can i use a 5000 luman shop light for photosynthesis or no will no light be ok
Jess J they don’t need any light during dormancy if kept between 35-50*F. If warmer than that then you need a good light. 5000 lumens should be enough. I mainly use LEDs these days and I know a 400w fixture is pretty good for them, or Yescom 225 but you have to keep that one like 6 inches away from the plant.
I live in Zone 7b! (NE Arkansas)
I leave all my plants outside for the majority of the time during the winter months.
Only bringing them inside if the nighttime temps are going to be close to freezing or below. My temp limit is 34F.
@@TheBonsaiJungle ok great thanks soooo much
Did he fart at 2:09?
What happened to that beautiful long hair 🧐
It's all contradiction you can't have it sitting in water or not sitting in water it's one or the other sick to death of the contradiction and confusion
Yes you can. In nature moisture levels fluctuate. Sitting it in shallow water until the pan dries out for a few days before refilling is almost exactly mimicking nature between rainstorms. I haven’t grown all my plants with magic and using contradictions.
@@TheBonsaiJungle hi there wasnt aimed at you personally ect , just making a point ive read online ect, thanks for reply, yes are are spot on about water nature ect, thanks
