Just found you... I have lost 130 pounds (66 year old woman) via Keto and fasting and have kept it off for 4 years now. I started my Keto/fasting journey in 2017.) Keto has been amazing in controlling my RA pain, for 2 years now my doctor even says that due to my blood tests (CR5 levels) I can consider myself to be in remission. Anyway, I have decided to lose the last 10 pounds (those last pounds seem very stubborn) and am currently on hour 40 of a water only fast. My longest fast is 5 days. I have heard elsewhere that eating a small amount of butter during a long fast will not stop autophagy. I noticed that you don't mention butter on your "good fat" list in this video. Does butter completely stop autophagy and why is butter not on your "good" list? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and information!
Butter still has milk solids in it. It "could" push you out of a fasted state. Ghee (made from butter) has had the solids cooked into little crispy peices and strained out. Plenty of ghee videos here on YT
Hi Dr Petz, I admire your mission of getting the world into a fasting lifestyle. I love you passion and energy too. I am 63 hours into my 4th 72-hour fast and feeling great. I regularly re-watch your videos for info, focus and encouragement during my prolonged fasting.
I found the best benefits from including all fatty cuts of meat and fish, eggs/egg yolks, beef trimmings and tallow, ghee, butter, bacon, duck and chicken fat. So-called seed oils proved to be an expensive waste. Doing far better after eliminating all those and using GOOD animal fats to heal from RA, diabetes, hypertension, severe periodontitis and other diseases.

I often break a fast with some wonderful good old fashioned grass-fed butter! I cook w/it all the time as well, dont remember when I last bought olive oil. But yeah still guilty on the peanut oil front bc I wont give up my natural peanut butter, sigh. Thx Dr M!

Hi Dr. Mindy! I finished reading your book. I appreciate all the amazing information. I think I just need some clarification on one thing: you mention that if any beverage increases your blood sugar, that means that your fast has been broken. I wanted to test a favorite beverage of mine to see how my body reacts to it, and sure enough, my blood sugars increased from 77 to 83, 30 minutes in. HOWEVER, my ketones went from 0.4 to 0.7 (which, you've said anything over 0.5 indicates you're now in fat-burning mode). The beverage was non-sweetened almond milk, a small amount of dark plain cocoa powder, and some MCT oil. For weight loss, wouldn't it be considered a positive benefit that it increased my ketones? I don't want to be consistently breaking my fast, but the rise in ketones seems like a good thing.
I lost 30# 2022 with your plan! I gained 20# back and I need to start over!! How do I do this?? Would it be ok to fast 24* and do OMAD? What will get me back on track?? The fat does really help and I used MCT oil and avocados when I fasted before!
I'm not a doctor. My suggestion is learn to eat two meals a day, till you can do just one. Keep your eating window within 6-8 hours with atleast 17 hours fasting. No snacking. Then learn to increase those hours to 24 - 30+. Avocados, Brussel Sprouts, Salmon, Ginger, Sardines, Virgin Olive Oil from Morocco, SauerKraut, lemons, Broccoli, Pecans, Walnuts, Pistachios, goat cheese plus vitamins are some of my primary foods. As this video states count carbs, I think staying under 50. Count protein. The fat is new to me. Pay attention to what will make you gain weight. You need to do a lot of studying. YT has many videos.
I'm interested to know why you are using oils as fats rather than food as fats. It also answers my question about why I am not hungry for 8 hours after my blends. Which are soaked flaxseed, Chia seed, black sesame seeds, and Brazil nuts. Sometimes as extra I add germinated buckwheat. This all gets blended in a vacuum blender so it doesn't oxidize. The Chia seeds I add afterward as they don't need blending and it means I eat my blends rather than drinking it, I also eat walnuts with it. 3 Brazil nuts more than give you enough selenium for the day. Black sesame seeds have 15 times as much calcium as white ones and provide the calcium. Chia seeds and flax seeds produced tons of Omega 3 oils. Anyway there's my main menu for anybody who is interested.

As soon as you are soaking them they start to come to life and the whole chemistry changes and you are eating a live food full of nutrients and life. I also think some seeds have some kind of chemicals to protect themselves when they are seeds and as soon as they start germinating these chemicals change and the whole thing becomes very digestible.

I've used Kachava in the past -- I think it tastes really good (especially if you blend with a banana + almond milk), but honestly, I can't do those fake sweeteners. They use monk fruit extract. I also find that there's SO much stuff in the powder, that if you start feeling ill with it or have gut upset (as I did), you can't even begin to pinpoint what exactly is causing it. It's not Keto, either, if that's something you're looking for.

Wonder if you have any advice. Every time I break a fast after 14 hours or longer I always get diarrhea. I used to be fine and love fasting but not any more. I had my gallbalder removed 11 years ago so I'm not sure if this effects things.

Be careful with MCT oil. It has unpleasant side effects which I have personally experienced. If you choose to use it I suggest starting slow and see how your body reacts.

After going round and round we came to the conclusion that the reason we were arguing about it is because there were other things that they thought were animal fats lol. They had never heard of ghee or tallow. I buy lots of Tallow (beef suet) from my butcher. My whole life I've been buying it to melt down and make suet for my wild birds. It's a gruesome prospect following a 72 hour slog to only have these oils to throw down as good as they may be ? I can't find bone broth in the UK that's affordable and as a meat eschewer (ok with sea-food though) i'm struggling to find anything sensible to break the fasts so my next autophagy session hasn't got as much work to do and that process of itself could still be working on decades of accumulated junk,still to process.? Is it being said that glugging down olive or mct is the way or am i missing something ?

An alternative to beef stock is chicken. You can make great stock from chicken necks (thyroid) and wings. Lots of great fat in the wings. Pressure cooker, cover with water, half teaspoon of good salt, 25 minutes. When cooled in fridge, should be jelly-like. It's really tasty.

I’m struggling with feeling terrible since i added 24 hour fasts. I’m post menopause 53 yes old - need to lose 30 lbs. I have low the thyroid and stopped taking my meds 6 months ago. I’ve been doing 5:2 fast for a month. 18 hours 5 days a week with no issues. 1 day 24 and one day hormone feasting. On the day after my 24 fast I literally feel like I have the flu, barely can get out of bed. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
I do really believe fasting heals. If you have thyroid, you can fast, but when you eat, EAT with no calorie restriction, focus on nutrient-dense foods and do not fast for more than 24 hours, and vary your fasting lengths. And also, if you take any medications for thyroid, better to work closely with your medical doctor. 🙂
Why did you stop your thyroid meds? Really dangerous. I only have 1/2 thyroid, and take T3 only - after years of Thyroxine, this turned my life around. Find a good endocrinologist, and read Stop The Thyroid Madness.

Not a good choice. Avocado, olives, Nut butter, Raw Walnuts, Coconut yogurt is great for breaking a fasting.
What about eating an avocado to break the fast?

I've just found you and your work. I used to do the 16 hours some time ago, and did my first 24 hours fast. But I noticed that my "gastric" like symptoms seem to be coming up. How do I handle that, not sure what my body is trying to tell and how should I break my fast?

There is very little research on this topic.
I do not recommend dry fasting longer than 12-24 hours

Be careful with MCT oil. It has unpleasant side effects which I have personally experienced. If you choose to use it I suggest starting slow and see how your body reacts.

@@DrMindyPelz Someone asked ask me this same question recently. After going round and round we came to the conclusion that the reason we were arguing about it is because there were other things that they thought were animal fats lol. They had never heard of ghee or tallow. I buy lots of Tallow (beef suet) from my butcher. My whole life I've been buying it to melt down and make suet for my wild birds. But now that I'm keto I find myself having to replenish it because my husband keeps cooking with it LOL. I render it in the crock-pot. Works out nicely.

It's a gruesome prospect following a 72 hour slog to only have these oils to throw down as good as they may be ? I can't find bone broth in the UK that's affordable and as a meat eschewer (ok with sea-food though) i'm struggling to find anything sensible to break the fasts so my next autophagy session hasn't got as much work to do and that process of itself could still be working on decades of accumulated junk,still to process.? Is it being said that glugging down olive or mct is the way or am i missing something ?

An alternative to beef stock is chicken. You can make great stock from chicken necks (thyroid) and wings. Lots of great fat in the wings. Pressure cooker, cover with water, half teaspoon of good salt, 25 minutes. When cooled in fridge, should be jelly-like. It's really tasty.

I’m struggling with feeling terrible since i added 24 hour fasts. I’m post menopause 53 yes old - need to lose 30 lbs. I have low the thyroid and stopped taking my meds 6 months ago.
I’ve been doing 5:2 fast for a month. 18 hours 5 days a week with no issues. 1 day 24 and one day hormone feasting. On the day after my 24 fast I literally feel like I have the flu, barely can get out of bed. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Have some sugar free ginger tea when you're not feeling well.
I do really believe fasting heals. If you have thyroid, you can fast, but when you eat, EAT with no calorie restriction, focus on nutrient-dense foods and do not fast for more than 24 hours, and vary your fasting lengths. And also, if you take any medications for thyroid, better to work closely with your medical doctor. 🙂

Really dangerous.
I only have 1/2 thyroid, and take T3 only - after years of Thyroxine, this turned my life around.
Find a good endocrinologist, and read Stop The Thyroid Madness.

Calories do count if you eat more than your body uses energy. Energy ratio. That's why some people pigging out on keto products gain weight.
