Yeah, the middle section is what breaks up the song. This version, I can understand why someone would find it monotonous without the middle section. Also, the audio quality on the video was complete garbage. This song should be heard in good audio fidelity. They should try listening to the full version of the song (non-video version) in their free time on a good stereo to see if it changes their mind. Millions of fans aren't wrong about this song.
Yeah, this ruined it for a short listen. If they'd got that middle section to break it up for them, it probably wouldn't have come off as so monotonous to them
Yeah the full version isn't too long eh? Classic. I find it's better than most of B.O.C. work. But they have some bangers. The Red & The Black, Godzilla, Burnin For You, Transmaniacon MC, Then Came The Last Days Of May 🤘🎸
I agree this version is a single edit in order to fit on vinyl 45RPM record. however, I'll admit as much I hate single edits. this one of the rare cases of a decent single edit.
Guitarist Donald Roeser said, “I was thinking about my own mortality. I wrote the guitar riff, the first two lines of lyric sprung into my head, then the rest of it came as I formed a story about a love affair that transcends death. I was thinking about my wife, and that maybe we’d get together after I was gone.” And I agree with Fenom 🤙🏼
Ditto! I love the stand. The book is great, and it's one of the best TV adaptations of kings books. I think the only other TV miniseries that rival it are IT & Storm of the century.
Godzilla and Burning For You are their other radio hits. That means they are also big but they are also often played on the radio like this one is. But Astronomy and Veterans of the Psychic Wars are also good especially the remastered live versions from the eighties. The Blue Oyster Bar bit from The Police Academy movie is a joke based on this group’s name and song that it has called “The Golden Age of Leather “ a song about a gang fight between two motorcycle gangs in the desert during a sandstorm. One of my favorite songs by this group is called “Joan Crawford “.
The summer of 1976 I went to a Blue Oyster Cult show at Varsity Stadium in Toronto - and Kiss was the opening act! To this day, I’ve NEVER seen so many people stoned on acid in one place! Peace

The studio version has an excellent guitar solo and layered musical part. This video completely cut that out. But this song is such a vibe and I have always felt that way since the first time I heard it. Great choice. But burning for you is also one of their biggest hits
I'm glad you pointed that out. How stupid was it to cut out the heart and soul of this great tune? That whole bridge and guitar interlude sets up the climax, and without it makes the song repetitive.
Blue Oyster Cult was formed in NY and debuted in 1972... "Don't fear the Reaper" became their biggest hit and has been used in countless movies, TV shows and commercials. B.O.C. had a 3-guitar line-up, originally w/ Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser (guitar/ vocals), Eric Bloom (guitar/ vocals), Allen Lanier (guitar/ keyboards), Joe Bouchard (bass) and Albert Bouchard (drums)... Their lyrical premise was inspired by fantasy, science fiction, and monster movies... Musically, they were very accomplished and rose to prominence in the 70's w/ a mix of rock and psychedelic music. Their first gold album (half million copies sold) in the US was their 3rd record 'Secret treaties' in 1974... (Kiss opened for them on tour... 1 year later, B.O.C. opened for Kiss) and their 1975 live album 'On your feet or on your knees' ... 4th B.O.C. album 'Agents of Fortune' sold platinum in the US (1 million copies) in 1976... 5th album 'Spectres' also sold gold and scored the hit single - 'Godzilla'... Their 2nd live album 'Some enchanted evening' in 1978 sold platinum. Subsequent albums ('Mirrors' in 1979 and 'Cultosaurus Erectus' in 1980) were not as successful... They did have one more gold album in 1981 - 'Fire of unknown origin'... w/ a hit single - "Burnin' for you" ... However, 3 more albums in the 80's failed commercially and Blue Oyster Cult never regained their mainstream popularity. Blue Oyster Cult have been cited as huge influences by 80's rock bands... Metallica even covered their song 'Astronomy'. Still, Blue Oyster Cult kept recording and touring small venues into 2001... founding member Allen Lanier passed away in 2013... (Both Joe Bouchard and Albert Bouchard had left B.O.C. by then) ... Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma have kept B.O.C actively touring and released 'The symbol remains' in 2020... In 2024, B.O.C. released the album 'Ghost stories'... feat. re-recorded songs from their past that never made it on their records.
Now that you've heard the song, you should check out the SNL skit with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. The "band" is in the studio, and Will is playing the cowbell. 😂 Another great reaction, gentlemen! Loving this new intro! Much love from Oregon! ❤
That Riff is one of the most recognizable ones in Rock. Love it!!! Great song and band! This shortened video did miss the great guitar solo unfortunately! Maybe would have spiced up the chicken a bit!! 😂 Recommend "Godzilla" next!!! ❤❤❤❤
As many have noted, part of the song (middle section) was cut out of this video, for some reason. This is also from the studio version, which has been synced to some live video.
This video left out the center breakdown with phenomenal guitar work. Maybe if you hear the full song it would be more enjoyable. Listen to their song 'I Love the Night', really nice song.
Wish you would do the album version instead of these videos put together and matched with the shortened radio versions. Especially for the earlier music. They didn't do videos back then.
The solo section is cut out on the radio version, which this is. The whole gist and feeling of the song can be found in the solo. Without it, the song is incomplete.
I saw BOC in 1988 for the only time in my life. They played in a small club to about 1000 people or so. It was a great show, the guy standing in front of me passed out from all the weed he smoked and fell down and his friends helped him back up. Kings X was the opening act, I had never heard of them but they rocked ! I bought some of their CDs in the years thereafter !
In my late teens to early 20's I started listening to the jazz and rock stations (part of the switch to FM radio. I had listened to more r&b\soul and top 40 before). This would have been part of the new music I was hearing.
BOC is the worlds biggest underground group. They have a huge catalog of music ranging from mellow and melodic to psychedelic , rock to progressive to heavy metal . The softer side being the 1979 "Mirrors" album and the song "In Thee", "Mirrors", "The Vigil" and "You're Not The One (I Was Looking For)" Another great song is "I Love The Night" on the 1977 "Spectres" album One of BOC's older songs "Astronomy" was covered on the Metallica Garage Inc Album. Perhaps you might like the live version of "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" from the 1981 concert in Hollywood Florida which contains a melt your face guitar solo. This song was on the soundtrack to the animated film Heavy Metal. Some other songs you might want to try:.... "Hot Rails To Hell", "7 Screaming Diz-Busters", or "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt" from the 1973 album "Tyranny And Mutation" "Black Blade", or "Deadline" from the 1980 album "Cultosaurus Erectus" "Bucks Boogie" (anything really) from the 1975 "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" album. "Cities On Flame", "Before The Kiss, A Redcap", and "Workshop Of The Telescopes" from the 1972 Debut album. "Astronomy", "Flaming Telepaths", "Dominance And Submission", "ME 262", or "Harvester Of Eyes" from the 1974 "Secret Treaties" album. "Godzilla", "E.T.I (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)" from the 1982 "Extraterrestrial Live" album "Dancin' In The Ruins", "Perfect Water", or "Shadow Warrior" from the 1985 "Club Ninja" album. "I Am The One You Warned Me Of", "Del Rio's Song", "The Seige And Investiture Of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle At Weisseria", "Magna Of Illusion" from the 1988 "Imaginos" album. "Damaged", "Harvest Moon", "Power Underneath Despair", and "See You In Black" from the 1998 "Heaven Forbid album. "That Was Me", "Box In My Head", "Tainted Blood", or "The Alchemist" from the 2020 "The Symbol Remains" album. Yes, and I left a metric crap ton off the list. This is just to get you started.
In my 1st apartment when I was 19, my downstairs neighbors (who were very into psychedelics) wore this album out. And I can tell you that BOC can get real old, real quick even for us unseasoned chicken types. We finally told them no BOC before midnight. It's too much to be forced into that zone, too early in the evening.
I've had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. My favorite BOC song and always will be. The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this as the opening track. Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song. "The love of two is one". Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas. Fun fact: Before they were Blue Oyster Cult, they were The Great White Underbelly.
This song must have been speaking to a high school bro who was found in his car upside down dead, his battery still powering his tape deck, playing over and over "Don't fear the Reaper..."
Blue Öyster Cult is my third favorite band and the first band to deploy the umlaut. (/ˈʊmlaʊt/) is a name for the two dots diacritical mark (◌̈) as used to indicate in writing (as part of the letters ⟨ä⟩, ⟨ö⟩, and ⟨ü⟩) the result of the historical sound shift due to which former back vowels are now pronounced as front vowels (for example [a], [ɔ], and [ʊ] as [ɛ], [œ], and [ʏ]). (The term Germanic umlaut is also used for the underlying historical sound shift process.)
Pay attention when watching Halloween the movie. The part where they r driving to go babysit smoking a joint together this song comes on & michael myers pulls up behind them before ruining their lives. God damn classic john carpenter scene
Great song, great groove, lyrics and message. Always cranked it up when it came on. Lyrically a profound message. You'd hear it if you'd shut your blathering pie holes for a minute.
This so is so good. I think you have to be older like us to appreciate it. Lol. If you were around when it came out you would love it like us old people do.
It's a far more interesting song if you actually listen to the entire studio version and pay attention to the lyrics. A woman is depressed over a lost love and contemplating suicide. In the end she joins the reaper, heading "into the light", and takes the plunge out an open window. Very spooky! The missing instrumental section with a fiery guitar solo in the middle of the song not only breaks up the repetitive tempo but also suggests the emotional turmoil of the character as she chooses death over life.
Now we're talkin'. Oh damn. This is the short version. You.need to.listen to the album version. Incredible breakdown in the middle. Oh well. Still good.
the shortened version that whole middle section was cut out, that's a shame, such an integral part of the song.
If they'd got that middle section to break it up for them, it probably wouldn't have come off as so monotonous to them
I think this was in mono for TV. This never aired on MTV because they only played stereo videos.
This is terrifible
Yeah the full version isn't too long eh? Classic. I find it's better than most of B.O.C. work. But they have some bangers. The Red & The Black, Godzilla, Burnin For You, Transmaniacon MC, Then Came The Last Days Of May 🤘🎸
Men, listen to the record full version. That’s the real gem. You only got half of the experience. The second bit is quite amazing.
The studio version has an interlude guitar solo, that's iconic.
I was like WTF?? The solo is the best part!!!
That was studio track. It was just edited and synced to live footage.
'Burnin' For You' is a great hit by them and it rocks, much more upbeat
Agree! They should definitely try that one out!
Agree 💯
There's a HUGE instrumental section missing from the middle of the song! You guys need to give it another go with the full version.
I agree this version is a single edit in order to fit on vinyl 45RPM record. however, I'll admit as much I hate single edits. this one of the rare cases of a decent single edit.
This is the edited version of the song; you guys listened to the version that cut out the guitar solo and breakdown section.
the cowbell is also missing. what the heck?
This is playing in Annie’s car in Halloween 1978 while Micheal Myers is driving behind them
It is but where I remember it best is in the opening credits of Stephen King's mini-series The Stand from the 90s.
The guitar solo was missing, "Veteran of pshyic wars" is another hit of theirs that they wrote for the animation "Heavey metal"
A movie well worth seeing, too!
TY for mentioning Heavy Metal. ❤️
Great song but unfortunately this video didn't feature the whole guitar break down which is a must
You didn’t listen to the version with the iconic guitar solo. Then you would have truly appreciated this song...
This is used in the opening sequence of one of my favorite Stephen King movies, "The Stand". Great book too!
Ditto! I love the stand.
The book is great, and it's one of the best TV adaptations of kings books.
I think the only other TV miniseries that rival it are IT & Storm of the century.
This song took on a whole new meaning for me when my 17 year old son passed away 🇨🇦🖖🏻
One of the best guitar riffs and "transitions" in classic rock history.
...missing from this version.
@@sebastianblack6506 I know! I wrote it before the song was finished. I hadn't heard the single version in almost 50 years and forgot it even existed.
Godzilla and Burning For You are their other radio hits. That means they are also big but they are also often played on the radio like this one is. But Astronomy and Veterans of the Psychic Wars are also good especially the remastered live versions from the eighties. And Take Me Away is another good song
The summer of 1976 I went to a Blue Oyster Cult show at Varsity Stadium in Toronto - and Kiss was the opening act! To this day, I’ve NEVER seen so many people stoned on acid in one place!
Peace

This was the short radio version, didnt have the epic guitar solo ending. Bummer. Definitely should do the SNL skit Needs More Cowbell
I knew a funeral director that had this as his ringtone! LOL!
Some of the greatest lyrics in rock history
The song featured in SNL's legendary "More Cowbell" sketch
Legendary is right!
Thought the two older would have gotten that right away
I actually prefer that to the actual song.
So funny that SNL skit!!!!
Also the opening scenes of Stephen King’s “The Stand”

The best song to be playing during the opening scene of a miniseries about a pandemic.
It was in the book as well. I can never hear this song and not think of The Stand.
More cowbell!
I have a fever… and the only cure…
Check out Ozark mountain daredevils brand new song "more cowbell"
If you want to get to heaven you gotta raise a little hell.... More cowbell
Have always loved this
Now that you've heard the song, you should check out the SNL skit with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. The "band" is in the studio, and Will is playing the cowbell. 😂 Another great reaction, gentlemen! Loving this new intro! Much love from Oregon! ❤
Just got to the end of the video and see that you've already seen it. Sooo...anyhoo. ☺️🤪
That Riff is one of the most recognizable ones in Rock. Love it!!! Great song and band! This shortened video did miss the great guitar solo unfortunately! Maybe would have spiced up the chicken a bit!! 😂 Recommend "Godzilla" next!!! ❤❤❤❤
This is a perfect fall evening walk with leaves falling by the graveyard. Eeerie Holloween season song. Hello it is Dont fear the Reaper.
As many have noted, part of the song (middle section) was cut out of this video, for some reason. This is also from the studio version, which has been synced to some live video.
Don't fear the Reefer !!!!
This video left out the center breakdown with phenomenal guitar work. Maybe if you hear the full song it would be more enjoyable. Listen to their song 'I Love the Night', really nice song.
I got a fever and the only prescription is more COWBELL.
"You're gonna want that cowbell."
Grrrr, the whole instrumental part was cut out!
This is the SHORT version, middle section where it changes for a while is cut out. Listen to FULL version.
Studio version has the most epic guitar solo at the end played by the great Buck Dharma.
At least 1/3 of songs is missing... as others have pointed out... That missing part is really what made it special.. Top 50 hit to top 10- 20 hit..
The best part is the guitar solo that wasn't on this video. you got robbed of that, it is amazing.
The longer album cut is better than this radio cut.
🎼You will flip out and have a different reaction if and whenever you listen to the entire uncut studio version of this song. I can guarantee it.🎼☮️
Much rock'n'roll in the 70's was written for exactly that: Listen and smoke a joint!
Ok, gentlemen, this was not their biggest song. Godzilla was their biggest hit. You will love that song!!!
“Reaper”was their highest charting single peaking at #12 on billboard top 100 charts in late July’76 “Godzilla” didn’t make the top 100!
Godzilla? 😂
I like this song better
Burnin for you was their only other Top 40 hit.
You reacted to the version without the guitar solo in the middle of the song😢
That solo is like a whole other song
SONG WAS IN THE GREAT SCARY MOVIE OF ALL TIME " HALLOWEEN " A REALLY GOOD AMERICAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND 🔉🎼🎵🎶🎤🎧🎸🎹🥁
Got to see them Live right when this came out, there Laser show was awesome. made me a instant fan.
This was a huge hit back in the day! I saw them open for Black Sabbath. The Black and Blue tour. ✌️❤️🤘
The album version has layers to it and is longer than this version.
Yeah this doesn't even feel like the same song without that interlude.
In my late teens to early 20's I started listening to the jazz and rock stations (part of the switch to FM radio. I had listened to more r&b\soul and top 40 before). This would have been part of the new music I was hearing.
So important to understand the lyrics to this song. Truly haunting.
BOC is the worlds biggest underground group. They have a huge catalog of music ranging from mellow and melodic to psychedelic , rock to progressive to heavy metal .
The softer side being the 1979 "Mirrors" album and the song "In Thee", "Mirrors", "The Vigil" and "You're Not The One (I Was Looking For)"
Another great song is "I Love The Night" on the 1977 "Spectres" album
One of BOC's older songs "Astronomy" was covered on the Metallica Garage Inc Album.
Perhaps you might like the live version of "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" from the 1981 concert in Hollywood Florida which contains a melt your face guitar solo. This song was on the soundtrack to the animated film Heavy Metal.
Some other songs you might want to try:....
"Hot Rails To Hell", "7 Screaming Diz-Busters", or "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt" from the 1973 album "Tyranny And Mutation"
"Black Blade", or "Deadline" from the 1980 album "Cultosaurus Erectus"
"Bucks Boogie" (anything really) from the 1975 "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" album.
"Godzilla", "E.T.I (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)" from the 1982 "Extraterrestrial Live" album
"Dancin' In The Ruins", "Perfect Water", or "Shadow Warrior" from the 1985 "Club Ninja" album.
Ironically, the real version of the song has exactly what you guys are saying it's missing. A breakdown and interlude that's changes things up.
Oh yeah ! Great band Awesome song! A great reaction!
Definitely need to check out Veterans of the Psychic War, Black Blade & Godzilla
❤Yep,❤❤Corey 100% got that vibe. 🎉❤Corey and Fenom, you rocked this🔥🔥🔥🔥
In my 1st apartment when I was 19, my downstairs neighbors (who were very into psychedelics) wore this album out. And I can tell you that BOC can get real old, real quick even for us unseasoned chicken types. We finally told them no BOC before midnight. It's too much to be forced into that zone, too early in the evening.
Corey, HOW CAN U NOT HAVE HEARD THIS SONG????
I've had the pleasure of seeing them live twice.
My favorite BOC song and always will be.
The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this as the opening track.
Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song.
"The love of two is one".
Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas.
Fun fact: Before they were Blue Oyster Cult, they were The Great White Underbelly.
Absolutely 💯 🔥
Great song. You guys should check out the studio version. This version cut out the bridge and guitar solo.
Please stop reacting to this edited version! Without the instrumental in the middle of the song it just doesn’t work!
So true. That build and sudden burst of the guitar solo is amazing
Do the full version !!
Listen to the album version when you guys can. This video edited the guitar solo
Great one!
I love the night by Blue Oyster Cult is another one of my favorites.
One of their more laid back songs.
this was the radio edit need a redo with the long version
The spice was in the middle. Somebody said hold that. The longer version has s break from the lyrics.
What happened to the solo?
that was the short version
This came out in the 70s and we smoked a lot of pot in the 70s and we loved these monotonous grooves.
Fenom202 for the win! ✊🏻😎 It really is a good song especially when the solo isn't missing but I get what you guys are saying about the mellowness.
Ya, this is the "single" version. You guys missed out on the best part of the song. What a shame. 😮💨
Their first 3 records are their best. Agents of Fortune changed everything for them with their first breakout radio hit .
I thought I had seen you guys react to this already
This song is fire! I love the singing and the lyrics. It is missing the entire middle section, so I am not sure what happened with this video.
Pay attention when watching Halloween the movie. The part where they r driving to go babysit smoking a joint together this song comes on & michael myers pulls up behind them before ruining their lives. God damn classic john carpenter scene
Short version? I gone!
This was a radio edit unfortunately
They cut out a good 2 mins of this
The whole guitar Interlude
Great song, great groove, lyrics and message. Always cranked it up when it came on. Lyrically a profound message. You'd hear it if you'd shut your blathering pie holes for a minute.
Cities Aflame with Rock and Roll is excellent by them as well
Blue Oyster Cult: Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll, Godzilla, Burning for You, Astronomy, Last Days of May, ME262, Dominance and Submission.
This so is so good. I think you have to be older like us to appreciate it. Lol. If you were around when it came out you would love it like us old people do.
Wish you'd have done the long version with the guitar solo and MORE COWBELL. Burning For You should be your next one.
Funny story, the band was originally named Soft White Underbelly.
Oops! Missed the epic guitar solo in the full version.
" I got a FEVER for COWBELL!!!"
Now we're talkin'. Oh damn. This is the short version. You.need to.listen to the album version. Incredible breakdown in the middle. Oh well. Still good.
Featured in the pilot episode of Veronica Mars.
I saw these guys back in the later 1970s.
This song is great. I remember it from the 1996 movie The Frighteners starring Michael J Fox😊
This is one of their slow songs. You need to check out "Heavy Metal", "Black Blade" or "OD'd On Life Itself"
Please look up the full record version and as for another from them, I would suggest "Burnin' for you". Enjoy!
"Burning for you" was also a top 40 hit...reaching #40
