  • "And it's melting!" according to NASA. The deep ocean beneath Greenland is fueled by currents from the subtropics. This warm and salty water is melting the ice from the bottom up and much faster than the surface water. A new NASA project named Ocean Melting Glaciers (OMG) will be gathering more data on the ice melt over the next 5 years.

If Antarctica or Greenland melts, what SLR will there be? For Antarctica, if it melts, SLR is estimated at 206 ft (62789 mm). So
over 5000 yrs, this is 12.6 mm per yr. If Greenland melts, SLR is estimated to be approx 24 ft (7300 mm), over 5000 yrs this is 1.46 mm/yr. So, for both to melt, 12.55 mm plus 1.46 mm equals 14.01 mm SLR for 5000 yrs. You must have a corresponding decrease in Earth's rotation also. So, at the present rate of approx 3 mm SLR, it will take 23,333 yrs if the melt is linear.

The alarmists have been yelling that the sky is falling for ever.

10,000 years ago a gigantic melting glacier sat on the very spot I now call home.
Did cavemen driving SUV's melt the glacier or did extraterrestrials steal it from the Earth?
Why didn't this massive glacier drown the entire North American continent if it melted?

My geography teacher says that in 12yrs so much of Greenland will be in the water that most countries will disappear under water

If the sky falls the pieces which fall into the ocean will cause the sea level to rise. Chicken Little ran around crying 'the sky is falling' but people laughed. Just wait. That sky could fall any day.

So, again why not recut all the inland waterways to accommodate for some water displacement? Excavated earth would help raise lower lying areas.

+ChrisTobi They will join some ancient cities and settlements which are now under water, some 100 feet under water. Btw, 1000 years ago the Vikings had farming settlements on Greenland which means back then it was warmer than it is today.

+Philip Br Say that to London. There's dams on the Tames and it was a huge undertaking to make it work.
You can't just build a dam around and not have traffic. "The spice must flow".

I've been hearing about rising sea levels for 40 years. High tide looks about the same. What should I deduce from these two apparently contradictory observations?

      That you're very shortsighted.
      It takes TIME. Mountains don't
      rise in a few cenuries.
Ice ages develop and fade over
      hundreds of thousands of
      years.
      You have to take the
      loooong view.
      However...
It does seem to be accelerating
and the heat wave in Greenland
and Siberia burning to a crisp
      (all that permafrost!)
may be signs that it indeed
      is accelerating exponentially.
      Which means rapid sea level
      rise and totally ridiculous
      changes in weather patterns
      that outrun any paltry steps
      we take.
And since our Idiot in Chief
      has eviscerated environmental
      protections and put former
oil and gas lobbyists in charge
of the EPA and others, the
      wolves are guarding the henhouse.
      We're f***ed.

Climate change is a myth. There is always going to be higher temps and lower temps and extreme weather. That is just the way the Earth works. We are in no more danger of climate change than at any other time in history.

Don't forget to build a cryogenic lab, that contains the samples of all viruses and bacteria. Of course Noah had that, including a power generator, to keep the lab working.
