Rockhounding For Lapidary Grade Jasper

- Rockhounding can be a bit overwhelming if you go out trying to pick up every cool rock you find. I used this trip to find some lapidary grade material to work with. Plainly speaking, lapidary grade material is relatively free of cracks or major defects. This can mean ready for cutting into slabs or ready for grinding or carving without substantial prep.
I also take the time to differentiate between low grade jasper and silica rich gem grade material. Learning the difference is relatively easy with enough exposure to various examples. Whether you're just getting out there or have been a rock hound for years, learning to quickly grade stones in the field should save disappointment during cutting or polishing.

The speech you made about choosing what works for you is how we all got into rock hounding. We were walking around as a child, saw something shiny, or bright, or colorful and put it in our pocket. Years later we are still doing that, some of us with more knowledge about what they are, how they will cut or tumble, and some putting red rocks in their garden. It's all in the eye of the beholder. Since i have returned to my favorite childhood pass time I have been more happy than I've been most of my adult life.
When I was very, very young, I would collect all the shiny rocks from my nannies driveway. I had four or five large buckets of stones in the playroom.😂 One day when I went in with my next handful, she yelled and said, “you can’t bring any more rocks in here!!!” 😂😂❤❤ . I’m still at it 😊

Everything you say is true. I find your videos calming and relaxing. I choose rocks that float my boat. I don't go with societies blah, blah idea of exceptance of their ideas.

I wanted to do something a little different in this video. It might have something to do with my face being on my "other" channel. That's just boring work stuff though. I think I saw an earlier picture of you…beard was longer, you were at some machine and I think J was there. Amazing if you saw a seal! You must not be too far inland. This was a beautiful video…good info, too. What other channel are you on? Doing lapidary?
I have a small Pressure Washing channel for my "day job". It's some pretty bland stuff covering before and after inspections for insurance purposes. My hope is that it becomes a fun channel, but only time and work will tell. While I live on the coast, seals can be found as far inland as the Lost Creek Dam about 80 or so miles inland. I used to love "rock hounding". Still have my hammer and chisels. Still have a lot of rocks. I am 83 now and haven't gone out hunting rocks in a long time now, not by choice but due to circumstances. Sure do get the itch every once in a while though. 🙄

Cool video. I'm just getting into all of this, but have always been someone who likes cool stones and pick things up that I just like. Would like to get more into this as a hobby and perhaps making things. Going to check out your channel. Any recommendations on books for Northeast area (Hudson Valley). Seen a few videos about using dremels and that would be the only way I could go at this point.
Thanks for watching. Hope you subscribed as well ;) There are a few guides written for the Northeast. Hudson Valley brings to mind stones like quartz crystal, herkimer diamond, garnet, and amethyst. The dremel brand is great, but similar pro style hanging flex shaft tools can be found from 50 to 80 ish bucks. If you're handy, a small variable speed motor can be easily adapted to use lapidary polishing wheels A decent lapidary setup can comfortably fit in a small rolling shop cart.

I have a huge jasper the same as the first one!
I've got a few of the big ones in a rock pile. The Chetco River video shows some of the really big jaspers and jaspagates. We were going to show those this season, but J's injury was a lot worse than just a broken arm. Might have something to do with the luggage set under my eyes. We're hoping to film those next year.

I've been rockhounding for about 5 yrs now, this isn't just a hobby, it is an addiction, BUT a good one! I just want to give a few tips to those just starting out.
TIP 📢 The sound that jasper and other gemie minerals make are very distinct. You can definitely tell the difference between something good in your hand vs. not so good, like gravel/river rock. If you listen carefully, you can hear that sound when the two pieces of jasper he picks up hit each other in his hand.
☠️ Caution! Be careful if you are collecting RED minerals. Not all RED m8nerals are created equally. Cinnabar is a bright RED mineral that comes from mercury deposits. If you handle this mineral too long, breathe it in while cutting or lick it you can become very sick.
☆☆☆ PLEASE NEVER LICK ANY MINERAL! THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL but some are TOXIC. Instead takeca spray bottle. Or do what i like to do and go rockhounding in the r🌨in!
You can lick all the rocks you want with no harm. You spent too much time listening to paranoid helicopter mommies and live in a universe of fear. Life is a banquet and most poor suckered are starving to death.

Opening jasper and it's a 4+ color looks like it's good if you find one compact in size like that one it's perfect ring size. I'm new to your channel but not rocks. 40 years hunting, lapidary and Goldsmith and silversmith. Not meaning to be an art critic. I simply imply practicality. Unless you're making clock faces out of your finds it's best to find something under 4 square inches for ornamentation. "The pattern or color combo" I mean. It must fit the frame of your painting. Getting all of it to fit is half the battle.
It's expected larger pieces would be cut down to maximize the number of projects that can be made from one trips worth of findings. It's a recurring theme on my channel. Seems like something painfully obvious to someone who claims to have 40 years of lapidary experience. Perhaps your "experience" isn't as extensive as you would love the world to believe.

This stone is very similar to what I found when I was a child in my grandparents' area in Romania, at the foot of the Carpathians. Many such red-brown rocks contained inside fossils of snails with flat and conical shells, and even extraordinarily beautiful coral polyps that covered the entire surface of the rock, which had an orange color.
I found a red garnet in Mexico..🤠💕🤠
