How To Find Beautiful Agates, and Jasper at Greenwater, Wash

  • Greenwater Washington is my "Go To" place for rockhounding agates. It never disappoints and the setting is beautiful. In this video I show you how I find agates and more. You will also see some of my favorite Greenwater finds from this year.
To find the area I collect rocks in take WA 410 east from Enumclaw. After you pass through the town of Greenwater (watch for Big Foot on the right), travel about 2 miles and you will pass the fire station on the left. FS 70 is about a mile on the left.
Once on FS 70 drive until you pass a large lava flow on the right. After a short distance you will notice that the land on the left is no longer posted with the yellow "No Trespassing" sign.
There are numerous areas to pull off on the left. Almost every one of these pull offs will give you easy access to the Green River. One of my favorite areas is where the road takes a sharp right. There is a pull off with a public restroom there. I like to go upstream from this stop.
Equipment: I take my collapsiible rake and my backpack. In the spring I like to wear waders so I can walk through some of the shallow tributaries to reach gravel beds that others might not get to - becasue they don't have waders! lol. They help keep your legs dry when the brush is wet to.
Greenwater is a good place to take kids in the summer when the stream is not running high. It is easy to find a place where kids can walk to the water and find cool rocks.
There are several primitive campsites in the area. It is part of the Baker=Snoqualmie National Forest so have the right permits.
If you have any questions, drop it in the comments and I will get back to you!
    Get out and have fun!

I wouldn't say no one has EVER been to that last spot, because I used to hunt there back in 1992, but that's so long ago, some of those agates may not have even formed by then! LOL!!!

When the snow melts I want to check out some of the creeks draining into the river or out of the river, there’s a lot of agate there! I was exploring there this summer and found a road cut near the parking area to greenwater lakes hiking area right off the main road and found some calcite there. Lots of good exploring there

Greenwater is a lil stream that flows into the white river and of which it is not very accessable unless you park at the general store walk across the road then walk up the river but not in city sandals(lol) i grew up in that area and then logged the lower cascades and during that time I knew the owner of the Greenwater for which it was a small town but not really, more like a motel, general store, and ski shop most people don't even notice it except to get gas on their way to skiing at crystal mtn.

Sorry for the delayed response - I was on a 4 week rockhounding trip. The stream is off of FS 70 on the left side. During my trip I was at a spot near the bridge about 2 miles before the road turns into gravel. I found a few nice ones upstream. This time of year its harder to see the agates as algae and calcite is covering a lot of the rocks and the area is getting picked over. The best time is late Spring after the high water subsides. I hope this helps - good luck!.
