I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

These types of videos helped me a ton when I was getting into fishing last year. Definitely a lot of good points. One word of caution with thinner braid would be that it can cut through skin pretty easy. Use caution when pulling knots tight or landing fish. Another great viDebo bud!!

I use braid on every reel I own as a main line. The distance you get is not even close to using all Mono/Fluoro. Now it hurt me today at the pier, I lost a very big Snook, at least 35-40 inches, because my leader wasn't long enough and it cut my braid on the pier piling! Thanks Debo!

By the way when I first began watching two years ago I commented to you after seeing my first Debo video on Backlashes, that I couldn't believe you were not a 100K subscriber UA-camr. At the time you were high 30's. Guess what I've watched every video you've ever uploaded and you are by FAR the most informative, funny, knowledgeable, kind guy doing this, period....... Well here were are at 118 K and guess what your even better now. I have learned most of what I know about fishing and being a decent guy while I do that from you. • @cjscarborough83
    @cjscarborough83 3 роки тому

It’s been a learning experience with some trial and error. Trying different brands/combinations etc for different applications/setups. I don’t think it will end as my fishing experience goes along and my preferences change.
For instance, I kayak fish and the smallmouth kept shaking me off when in the yak. I was running all FC and a 6:3 or 7:0 ratio reel. So what I did was buy a 8:3 ratio reel to take the slack up quickly, mainlined a braid to a FC leader and it decreased the lost fish. Less stretch + faster reel = more fish in the yak.
I dig this kind of content. There’s always something new you can learn or adjust.

I am getting back into fishing after a 30 year layoff. I have had very good luck with monofilament through my earlier fishing. Now everyone says use 7 foot rods with braided line. My rods are usually 5 and a half to 6 feet long with what was at the time high speed reels (5 to 5.5 : 1 gearing). I am glad to hear your ideas on fishing the newer equipment. Thanks.

I have used both braid and monofilament. For my cheaper spin-cast reels (Zebco 33, 404, Roam, etc.) I use mono. My spinning reels and my bait caster have braid. One thing to consider for newer fishermen (fisher-persons, to be PC) is check the discount bins for fishing line. A years ago, I found several spools of Spyder-wire in different test strengths (6, 10, 14, 20, 65) in the clearance area of Walmart for about $4 each. I still check for deals like this when I go to Walmart. While this may not be the "best" braid ever made, for the price, I couldn't pass it up. Both braid and mono have their places in fishing, and I think it comes down to both personal preference and to the conditions of the area you are fishing. Great video, DEBO!

I know this is an older video. But I just watched it and will throw my $.02 out there. Basically, I do just like you. All my spinning combos have braid to leader. For my baitcasters, my topwater I just switched to try a newer line. The P-Line copolymer called Topwater. Designed just for it. So far I love it. Everything else I use Seaguar InvizX. With one exception. I fish my plastic mostly on my spinning medium combo since I fish mostly weightless. When I add weight and want to use my baitcasters I use braid to leader. For the sensitivity. Works well. Thanks for the great videos.

This is great content. I personally use braid most of the time, as the sensitivity is unsurpassed and it does not have issues with memory. I typically run a 4 foot fluorocarbon leader tied on with a uni/jam knot. I’m sure that there are disadvantages to my system, but it gets me fish in the boat. Keep up the great work Debo!

You had me at the title!. Glad you covered this subject. I've told you in the past, it's been a few of your videos that push me to go outside the box. Not being a fan of braided line I refused to conform. Spinning reels are where my versatility shines. The best adjustment I ever made was using braided line. I too believe that fish can see colors like they do. I'm now over 60 & I rely on a leader as well. I do use 8# most days and fluorocarbon is my line of choice. This past year I decided to use braided line in my baitcasters as well. I decided to go with 30# braided due to also using it for Ned rig at the same time.😳 Yes sir, you read that right! It actually works really well. My leader is 10# fluorocarbon. I also throw a 90series Choppo on the same setup. So Debo, yes, thanks to you, I now have expanded my arsenal and techniques. With braid, many options are now possible.

Love this type of video Debo. Thanks for a great breakdown man!
I only have 3 rods right now and use straight braid on my non-cranking rod. I mainly use moving lures and don't worry so much about fish being line shy on a swim jig. I also only have the 3 reels so I want to be versatile and switch to frog fishing on that rod when the mood suits me. My spinning setup is actually also straight 10lb braid. I'm not a big believer (yet) in fish caring about seeing the line. I should try a leader, though, and see how that goes.

These type videos are much needed. Since in most of my fishing, I'm pulling fish through thick grass and thick pads, I use straight braid. I'm not concerned then about line visibility, I don't think fish can distinguish between a strand of grass and low vis green braid, at least I hope so, haha. I do use mono when fishing for stocked trout. During cold months, before the pads and grass are an issue, I sometimes use Copolymer. As the grass and pads go dormant, I've been considering a braid to floro or copolymer leader to see how I like it.

I use braid on both spinning and casting reels.
On my saltwater surf spinning reels where I have to cast out very far, braid is tremendous in helping me achieve that. I can put on 15-lbs braid on my 4000-size spinning reel and cast a 2-oz bait 100+ yards out. The exception is my 10-ft Xtra-Heavy surf spinning rod with a 5000-size reel spooled with 50-lbs braid, that lets me send a 4-oz sinker with a chunk of cut bait out 60 yards.
On my saltwater ultralight spinning gear, where my reels are no bigger than 2000-size, I use 12-lbs braid max to finesse-fish Snapper Bluefish, and other smaller species.
On my saltwater low-profile baitcasters, I usually have 50- or 60-lbs braid on it, because they're used on a party boat where I only need to drop straight down, or cast out slightly.
On my freshwater spinning reels that are no bigger than 1000-size, I use 8-lbs braid max on my ultralight setups. I can cast 40+ yards with a 1/4 oz bait.
On my freshwater baitcasters for BFS fishing, I use no more than 6-lbs braid, which allows me to cast those 1/8- to 3/16- oz baits out 20- or 30-yards.
On my regular freshwater baitcasters, I use no more than 10-lbs braid, or 12-lbs mono.
I have not used straight fluorocarbon on any of my reels, as I feel it is unnecessary. Most of the time, I don't even use fluorocarbon for leaders, because mono suffices.
This topic isn't as cut-and-dry as you've presented here, DEBO. It depends on what you're fishing for, where you're fishing for it, how you're fishing for it, and the equipment you're using.

Very helpful. I'm still very new at fishing I use braid a lot. But I still do a lot of things wrong, so these videos are helpful.

Thanks for your thoughts. Usually run braid to leader on spinning outfits except micro guided rods. Yep 10 to 15 lb test to a 6-8lb leader! Thanks again!

Thanks for validating what I've been doing :) (25-lb braid to a mono or floro leader) and a rod with a bit of flex in it.

Great viDebo. I’m currently using braid to a leader on all my setups simply because I don’t get out that often (2-3 times a month) right now and I want to avoid line memory. If I ever get to the point where I’m out 1-2 a week I’ll consider going straight fluoro on a baitcaster setup. Definitely helped me to start with the Trilene XL when I started using a baitcaster… never had to cut out a backlash.

Yes, these are a great, helpful type of video. Please continue! Just starting to use braid (mainly finesse spinning setups) and so far believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages! Thanks for all the great videos!

Great info Debo! I think some B roll footage would really help with this type of video, but the format is good as is!

Great info DEBO. I would recommend not going lower than 30LB braid on a baitcasting reel. That’s just my experience. I use 30Lb for all topwater except frogs which I use 50-65Lbs. I also use a short mono leader for my treble hook topwater baits. I use light braid 10-12 lb on all my spinning reels with a 8-10lb mono or flouro leader that is pretty long but doesn’t go into the spool. I like the leader between the reel and first eyelet on the rod.

I just found out the amazing Bill Dance uses Braid to leader for his Topwater Frog. That’s cool

I've only had one good backlash that I had to cut out, it was spiderwire braid... Changed brand and have had no issues since, love it, makes spinning reels awesome and casts a mile.
