The only reason I picked a baitcaster back up, is because of your three video lesson back in the day..... I currently have five baitcasters. Hands down the best instructional videos out there. 👍

    Hi Debo,
I'm 44 years old. I'm from Germany. I started fishing round about 6 months ago, started baitcasting 2 months ago. It isn't easy to find german YT content about baitcasting. The mass of our fishers use spinning wheels only. Most of baitcasting anglers are newbies too. There's simply noone out there, who's growing up with this kinda stuff.
It's sooooooooo helpful to see tutorials like yours right now!!!
I guess, many years of experience are very helpful for teaching noobs like me to use gear properly! :D
Thx a LOT, man! I appreciate your content more, than you could ever imagine!

Glad to see you showed the direction the line should come off the spool. I live by line should come off the top of the spool for baitcasters, bottom for spinning reels. Great tips, I use all of them.

Using using tape to prevent backlashing the entire spool is the best tip. I've had success with the 3M Blue masking tape. Also use tape to hold the tag end to the spool when it's not in use.

If your spool has holes in it like the one you have, you can run the braid through the holes before tying it to the reel and it will prevent it from slipping.

Berkley Big Game for beginners. Stuff comes on 1200 yard spools for ten bucks. Has a lot of memory, so every month or so you need to respool, but when you get the hang of casting and want to move to braid, you can use it as a backing to make your braid go further. I literally have had the same backing on one of my reels for four or five years now.

    • @richlucas9767

Thats honestly my exact plan. I just picked up 1st baitcastor, after 50yrs almost using spinning reels. So using the cheaper line to practice, then use whats needed for backing and braid !

In the dead of winter one year I ran across a Debo backlash- tip video. Seems like so long ago. But that one tip about there usually being only one lil loop section causing the problem, how to see it and pull it out... that little tip has saved me so many times. And I was certainly no Newbie when I watched the video.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

  • @stoneysdead689

I use to use a box like you have and then put tape around my pencil until the spool could turn but not freely- but then it would catch and start spinning the whole pencil and turn over the box- your spool goes rolling off down the hall- man it would make me so mad I used to get super frustrated trying to spool my reels. I think the little spooling station I bought- which is just a rod basically that keeps pressure on the spool so it doesn't turn freely- is one of the best accessories I've ever bought- really comes in handy. It also reduced the amount of tangles and issues I have with my reels, gained me a few feet on my casting- it's really helped me out. I honestly just bought it for convenience, the rest was just an unexpected benefit.

  • @dizzlesfeeshin8966
    @dizzlesfeeshin8966 3 роки тому +7

I think my biggest issue is cutting myself short, I always use the line spooling device I have. I forget to add enough on to run the line on the pole. It doesnt feel like a lot when you put 100 yards on a reel. That 7foot plus is more more than you think.

so i switch from braid to monofilament then spooled the bad boy in my baitcaster as how i spooled braid lines into my reel, the usual thing, then long story short, i was out for fishing session yesterday using monofilament, threw my first cast using monofilament, it was a disaster, i saw it birds nesting in my reel in a dramatic slow motion, i went home broken hearted, imma try this, you just shared centuries old knowledge in a matter of 15 minutes, good game well played, sir!

I have one of those cheap suction cup base reel spoolers you can get on Amazon.
I broke a rod, so I took off the base of the spooler, cut the rod down to about 2.5 feet, and attached the spooler to the rod.
    Works perfect.

Honestly if you’re at Cabela’s or Bass Pro buying braid, just ask for the employees to spool the reel using the machine. It’s free of charge and while I can’t speak for every fishing department, but at the Cabela’s I work at,all of the fishing outfitters use the machine for their personal gear, and we take a lot of pride in spooling customer’s reels to the same standards as our own. However, not every fishing department is going to put in as effort as we do. As a general rule though, the smaller locations tend to have fewer staff which means more individual experience on the machine. If you’re not sure just ask if they use the machine for their own stuff.

Well done instructions. The tape trick definitely works. I recommend using clear Scotch tape on the spool to hold back those disastrous backlashes. I put the tape at half spool when spooling the new line, then at about the 3/4 mark. Last I have the tape with me when I go out and cast the 1st time and cast as far safely as possible. Then I pull of a few yards past where I would ever cast out line and put a piece of tape on each side of the lure. This trick I've used for years and has helped immensely. 🎣

Just about any tape will leave a residue on your line. Take a tip from professional photographers and movie crews and get some gaffers tape. Similar to duct tape, very strong and durable but it will not leave any sticky residue.

Great tip! The shamano SLX is different they have holes just in the middle of the spool. Hard to get line through to the next hole to tie the line on the spool. I figure out just to stick the line in the hole and reel in. It will layer the line on top of one another then pray I don't get spooled by a big fish 😆

I bought a spool of really good stuff for each, threw them on my baitcasters, went outside and started practicing casts with them.
If I spend $25 on a spool of braid to practice with now, later, when I know what I’m doing, it won’t be an issue.
Get the basic mechanics down on land until you can cast well. Practice in the water until you know what you’re doing. Then try to actually hook onto some fish and practice that.

Good vid! I like your spooling setup. I have this little gadget that attaches to my rod, you screw the spool onto it and can manage the tension just by tightening the screw. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to clamp it to the rod, which always makes me a little nervous. Even though its just a little bit of plastic.

I think the biggest thing with learning a baitcaster is to stay within your self. People always want to bomb these big casts and it isn't really necessary. The biggest thing is accuracy with placement, if you can place a lure in a hula-hoop that is near a dock or piece of wood, you will be better off than bombing a cast 30 yards.

Using a terry cloth towel helps with tension when spooling braid. Also crank your drag down as tight as you can

I like to use a small piece of the white tape that usually comes on the spool of line , doesn't get gummy, and creates enough surface tension to keep braid from slipping

Do the new LFS have bigger handles than the old ones? I love the power handles on the SLX and if Lews had them I'd definitely get one
