That rustle of her skirts in the beginning is something I haven't heard in a long time. I remember when it was common and part of the mysterious world of women.
Beautiful, elegant and classy. So dreamlike. Edit: revisited this again. I think this scene will forever live in my head rent free 😂 and I’ll allow it.
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded along with the two dancers who truly showed us how a lovely song can be performed with Magical and Grace. Combining Exquisite Beauty and love together!
My LA, Hollywood, Ca grandparents' during this era lived around the corner from 'RKO Gower Pictures' on N Bronson Ave which in Late '57 became 'Desilu Gower Studios' where some of these cinema classics might have been filmed in part ??
As well as they were known, they were probably underrated. Fred with all his beautiful partners dominated couples dancing, and Gene to a lesser degree. Marge was great but I never fully appreciated how smooth Gower was. It did it so effortlessly. He had unbelievable timing and was probably a lot stronger than he looked. Watched this many times and I still tear up.
Just saw this in the movie by chance on TV fir the first time. What a gem. I feel nostalgia for a time before my own. Only timeless things can do that.
Among the greatest dance teams in show biz. Problem? More great dancers than there were great roles. He did some award winning choreography on Broadway. The good old days...........
in 1977, I worked in the box Office of the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. At the time, Gower Champion was rehearsing Annie Get Your Gun with Debbie Reynolds and Harve Presnell. During my lunch break, I would sneak up to the second balcony and watch this brilliant dancer/choreographer rehearse. I was an aspiring actress at the time and eagerly took every opportunity to soak up as much as I could of the profession I sought to enter by observing masters like Gower Champion. Nobody knew then that he wouldn't be with us for very much longer when he died on the opening night of 42nd Street (which he directed) in the early 80s from a rare blood disorder. Happily, Marge is still with us.
Michele Hurtado: Thanks for sharing this with us, I could literally imagine you sneaking up to that second balcony, watching this awesome dancer. I would love to hear more such stories. What has become of your acting career, if I may ask? Hope you accomplished it well.
I come back to watch this magnificent clip of Marge and Gower Champion periodically just to see remind me what real dancing is like. I so loved them since I was in high school and thanks to UA-cam and the person who is sharing this clip, I can keep the faith, as it were. Marge and Gower Champion are and always will be the BEST of the Best. I wish I knew where to send a card to Marge. She is just so very special and her legacy is priceless.
Wow! I always thought that the only really good dance team was Rogers & Astaire but now I know different! Marge & Gower Champion are flawless and a passionate couple to watch. My new favorite. I wish there was more footage of them.
Marge and Gower Champion made almost as many movies as Fred and Ginger. Marge and Gower Champion also danced on television shows and on many many stage productions. Marge Champion was a technically trained ballet dancer (it shows) and Ginger Rogers admittedly and somewhat proudly declared that she had no formal dance training whatsoever (it shows). Ginger says that she was just very lucky.
Gower Champion must be regarded as the greatest dancer in motion picture history. He could literally sweep the lady off her feet and to do it with poise, grace, balance and charm. Bravo!
Always highly regarded but never given full credit for their contribution. Love how Gower floated with her with only one arm around her. What were those "thumbs down" looking at? Thanks for posting.
In loving memory of Marjorie Celeste Belcher Champion: 1919-2020. Let's see, that now leaves Leslie Caron and Mitzi Gaynor; both are approaching--are you ready--90
This was the great surprise of the film: as opposed to the Astaire-Rogers treatment of "Smoke" as an on-stage performance, this emerges rather organically as a love scene. They dance in the empty café, and when the camera zooms in on their kiss at 00:55, a little magic occurs when the shot pulls out to reveal the interior disappeared and replaced with a starry night dance floor. The scene is gorgeous- especially the final minute when the Champions (married in real life) swing each other around with complete abandon, and then actually kiss at the end. Stunning.
mca1218 If you watch this version then switch to the Fred and Ginger version, they (Fred & Ginger) are absolutely flat. No enthusiasm, they look tired, no energy. Marge & Gower really ace this dance, and those kisses would Never happen with Fred or Ginger. Glad that you enjoyed them.
I never was enthusiastic over Fred and Ginger either. You've seen one Fred and Ginger number you've seen them all. Ginger and Fred were not about dancing but about romance. Marge Champion was a trained ballerina whereas Ginger admittedly and for some reason proudly declared that she had no formal dance training.
Susan Glaser and Jack Anthony, after reading your comments about Fred and Ginger and Marge and Gower, I was thinking about Fred and Ginger performing almost twenty years prior to Marge and Gower. I always look upon film for the time it was made. Fred and Ginger were trying to bring dance onto film like Marge and Gower did. I look at Fred and Ginger as forerunners and pioneers in the genre. By the time Marge and Gower came on the scene, the public was more accustomed to the genre, and a more "sophisticatedly trained" couple was right for the times. I will never take anything away from Fred and Ginger because much of what they did was ahead of its time. Fred was already a great dancer. Ginger became a great dancer because Fred made her look great, and the chemistry was right. Ginger as an all around good performer is many times overlooked.
I always like them, but "Show Boat" was the only film that they were in that has been readily available. Thank you very much for adding this sumptuous and very elegant clip - wonderful!
Some of their other films were available in video stores when we had video stores. Back in the 90's I bought or rented the following Marge and Gower Champion films from the video store....."Lovely to Look At" "Give a Girl A Break," "Jupiter's Darling," and "Three For the Show"...all available on tape, DVD or Laser Disc at the time. I don't know what the video stores did with all of those copies of Marge and Gower Champion films when they closed their doors to make way for the Internet.
The fact that only 194 'normal-with-good-musical-taste'l' people gave this incredible footage a thumbs up, [out of our Earth's entire UA-cam population of billions lol ], shows me/you/us, what sort of world we now live in [for example, every EDM track released in 2016 gets 194 thumbs up, even if everyone hates it lollllll] - thanks vegas1a - a fantastic post :)
I have all their movies in my collection. They were my favourite dancing couple in the movies when I was young and they were part of my inspiration to fulfill my dream of becoming a dancer - along with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Hollywood certainly knew how to create the set and lighting to match the mood of the songs, this one in particular. Great camera work and angles with long-running shots to keep the continuity.
This is the most beautiful dance sequence I have ever seen. Her dress & the set with the stars...so lovely.
What a lovely couple that made their dancing style look so easy. Always appreciated their beautiful dance routines.
What an elegant couple they danced so well I totally love them the champions
Gran coordinación de esta Hermosa pareja con Una composición orquestal de esta bella melodía !!!!!!😊😊😊😊
Rest in Peace Marge Champion 1919 - 2020 😭
Marge & Gower were the best dancers ever. They were such a pleasure to watch. May they both R.I.P.
that dress is gorgeous.
This is sheer magic, elegance and perfection. There has been nothing like them before, during, nor since. A wonderful, adorable couple.
That rustle of her skirts in the beginning is something I haven't heard in a long time. I remember when it was common and part of the mysterious world of women.
That dress is breathtaking
Wonderfull interpetation of the music
I know they divorced several years later, but for that moment in time what dancing, what chemistry!
Marge just died and a friend sent me this video. I have been watching and crying ever since. So beautiful.
Beautiful, elegant and classy. So dreamlike.
Edit: revisited this again. I think this scene will forever live in my head rent free 😂 and I’ll allow it.

Never got enough of this great dance team. All the greats just suddenly disappear
Could watch those two day in, day out. Beautiful moved, so smooth, flawless.
Now there's a couple who really knew how to spin! Gorgeous.
Beautiful
Man! It's amazing the sound those three guys lay down with just a squeeze box, a bass and a fiddle.
They don't make them like this today anymore... beautiful...
Definitely true. The 'Good Old Days" really were just that.
And I miss them so much... the world of ladies and true gentlemen, beautiful music and amazing ballet, expressive art and romance...
Pure magic I was brought up on these movies what a beautiful couple he was so handsome rip
RIP Marge ...101yrs old .....dance in the clouds of heaven now sweet lady 😍
Pure magic and sheer beauty. Such elegance. A delight to watch ❤❤
Ah, back in the days when dancing was authentic, and a talented couple could project romance so sweet you wanted to cry.
Beautiful & timeless
Marge and Gower Champion were the last big dance couple of the Film Musicals in the 50iger Years. Gower was unbeatable, and he was a good Singer.
One of the most beautiful dances ever filmed.
Heaven has a new dancer today.
Great dance team elegant andsuperb
R.I.P. Marge Champion!
Sweet and graceful lady who loved Jesus Christ is living and dancing in Heaven. I so look forward to meeting her there.
RIP Marge, at the astounding age of 101. A good life, well lived.

She is like Cinderella! Beautiful.
More like Snow White
Incredible grace and timing
Rest in peace Marge. You're dancing among the stars for real now.
La la Land has a dancing scene with a similar starry backdrop. I just keep coming back to this one, though.
Niccolle Gutierrez finally someone notices!
I was just watching this movie on TCM and realized this must be where they got the La La Land scene from.
Except this is REAL dancing, and REAL music, with REAL Actors in a REAL film....
@@moirbasso7051
You're so right!
@@moirbasso7051 so is lala land ya dimwit
I saw them together on broadway, 1954 Me and Juliet!
Still gets me teary eyed! Am I alone?

What a beautiful and tender dance amongst the stars! So lovely to watch. Thank you for uploading this. ✨✨✨✨
Lovely. It made me cry.

Che bel ricordo...
Il film si intitola in italiano MODELLE DI LUSSO...
They are magic together!!!
Just magical.
probably their loveliest teaming in an MGM musical. they were in four of them. this is Marge and Gower at their best.

EXACTLY. And, very well said! 🌿❤️🌿

Beautiful, graceful and elegant! They certainly don't make many films like this one these days!
just a clever way to dine and dash

Simply gorgeous. I strive to dance with elegance and style and passion, the ay they did in this video.
So beautifully done......looking so effortless, yet a lot of demanding choreography displayed in this number. Bravo!

WOW! so romantic just love it
Just fabulous ❤
Grace, beauty, and rhythm. Lovely!
GORGEOUS...... wonderful song, and two super stars. Thank you for taking us down Memory Lane with this lovely number.
Goodnight, Marge.
Godspeed, Marge! Thank you for your lovely contribution to film and dance. Definitely Lovely to look at. Rest in peace, angel.

This was the best part of that movie, along with Kathryn Grayson singing the song. I just love these two dancers. Thank you for uploading it.
I've seen this video more than 20 times in the last month. Help! *-*
It will stick to you like coins in a parking meter, and to me, that's delightful.
You don't need help. it's delightful.. don't change..

Great couple so perfect on their style
They were good, very good, but this had to be their best
There should be a law not allowing any couple who can dance like that together, getting divorced!
Wow, great dancing, feeling, and kissing, all in one. :)
