This dance routine works ridiculously well, and technically there are very few places where they can cut and move the camera,,, but it plays just as if its an extended one-shot, beautifully worked out. Mitzi Gaynor siding down 30 degree inclines, climbing ladders, and dancing on a thin rail... in heels. Had to be a lot of tough days, but they had plenty of makeup to cover the bruises.
I love how the deck chairs have CGT on them, from the famous shipping line Compagnie Generale Transatlantique which pioneered art deco design and streamlined modernism to the high seas in pure elegance, having liners such as the Normandie, Ile de France, De Grasse, L'atlantique and Liberte.

And dancing in heels! I feel like the guys always do more impressive stuff on the surface til you remember that the girls are wearing such uncomfortable shoes. Then you have a whole new respect for them.
swtsngr85 the dress has been corseted from the strapless bustier to a slightly drop waist and structured on the inside to draw the waist even further in, reducing the actress's waist more than what is her "natural" waistline. It's all part of the illusion. No one has a waist this small. Christian Dior's New Look which happened in 1947 had begun that wasp-waist trend and the trend lasted all the way through the 1950s, with waistlines being engineers to make women look like flowers: bosomy on top and opening up to a full petal effect below the waist. The slightly drop waist in this stunning pink cocktail "ballet-length" dress elongates the effect of the torso and the full pleated chiffon skirt enhances the overall floaty effect. Strapless dresses in the 1950s had an incredible amount of Corestry built into them, unlike the dresses of today where women are always yanking on the top of their dress as it falls down. It's very ugly how strapless dresses these days have very little internal support. Not only did Mitzi's dress remain glued to her bust during these strenuous dance sequences, you will also notice you don't see her underwear or panties when her dress float up! They thought of everything in order to retain an illusion of seamless, uninterrupted modesty onscreen. Mitzi has a beautiful sense of "line" as a dancer (notice her balletic leg positions throughout) and this sustains the illusion of sleek extension and airiness that the pink dress produces for the character. Costume design in those days was an integral part of the storytelling, and so just like a Plot of a screenplay has a narrative arc, so did the costumes have their own structure and support too. In productions of this nature the composition as a whole works in Unison to produce a work of art. It's truly de-lovely!
She was right about herself. Hard worker, charming and eager to please but never able to grab a film by the scruff of the neck and make it hers alone- like June Haver or June Powell, and unlike Charisse or Grable. 'South Pacific' was her best chance, and she is at least OK, but her Lt Forbush could and should have been a Streisand/Funny Girl moment. By all accounts Mitzi, like Fanny Brice, Mary Martin and Ethel Merman, went over much bigger with live audiences. Some performers need that continuous feedback to encourage them. Being directed by Joshua Logan, who never knew how to make movies out of shows, was no substitute.
My favorite part of the musical dance scene has always been , " Bill who??!?!?" 😅🎉

Vera Ellen in White Christmas is that tiny, too!
I had one once!
I don't get how Mitzi thought she was just okay in the movies. I think she has much more charisma than a lot of actresses those days
110% in agreement. Oh yes, and she was beautiful and talented too.
All of 'em !!!
Donald O'Connor was great. Mitzi Gaynor was great too!
oh they are just lovely.
Beautiful Cole Porter song.
Rest in peace Mitzi
