Jay, I agree with you...I first saw this movie at the age of 8 (1975), going through a rough time...and it was the first time I saw Rosemary and heard her sing, she was beautiful (and as she got older she was still beautiful to me) her voice was calming and full of warmth, and her singing was just the same...I became a huge fan & fell in love with her...really wanted her as a 'big' sister...I finally got to see her live in concert in 1994...and with this dance scene I fell in love with Danny, and wished he would twirl me around the floor that way! :)

jwmcmac I also love very much this dance even more elegant and I can say dreamy is her dance with fantastic Donald O'Connor. Where she has beautiful white dress. She looked like a princess!😊 Have you watched that scene?
The underrated voice and dancing talents of Danny Kaye. Like Donald O'Connor, he was one of the best, both vocally and with his feet. One of my favorite dance sequences in ANY movie. Not to mention the wonderful Vera Ellen.
My daughter was watching this in a class during holiday time breaks and she was singing along to this and a teacher was amazed she knew the lyrics Saying we own the movie and we watch it every Christmas holiday.

I love watching these two dance together. Danny Kaye might not have had the athleticism of Gene Kelly or the grace and fluidity of Fred Astaire, but he was still a great dancer in his own right and Vera Ellen was AWESOME. And together, they made a kind of magic that's hard to explain, but still a wondrous thing to watch, especially when Vera Ellen was wearing a pretty dress!
JoMarieM And remarkably, Danny Kaye had no formal dance training. He just jumped in and did what the choreographer wanted. That he could keep up with Vera Ellen is pretty amazing.
+Mark Schildberg Donald O'Connor was supposed to play the role Danny Kaye did, but I think he either had an accident or was not available for the filming at the last minute. Wikipedia will have the whole story for sure!
+Mark Schildberg Yes, further to my other message, this is what Wikepedia says: White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn(1942) - where the song 'White Christmas' first appeared - and Blue Skies (1946). Astaire declined the project after reading the script[3] and asked to be released from his contract with Paramount.[4] Crosby also left the project shortly thereafter, to spend more time with his sons after the death of his wife, Dixie Lee.[4] Near the end of January 1953, Crosby returned to the project, and Donald O'Connor was signed to replace Astaire.[4] Just before shooting was to begin, O'Connor had to drop out due to illness and was replaced by Danny Kaye, who asked for and received a salary of $200,000 and 10% of the gross.
My dad introduced me to his love of all Classics. He loved dancing and this was a favorite of his. When he was on his last days I put this on my phone so we could have one more time watching together. Even though he couldn’t talk his hand went up and moved with the music. I now watch and have tears of happiness.
Watch closely starting at 3:30 when Vera-Ellen twirls around behind Danny Kaye and kicks his foot- she recovers nicely though. She was so graceful about it, though, that no one at the time of filming even caught it!
This was the first movie I ever saw, I was about 5 years old and I went with my grandmother and brother, I think Mum and Dad wanted some time to themselves. I still remember what a fabulous experience it was and wondering how the cinema worked!
One of my favorite dance scenes of any film, ever. I will always love Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen. This has been one of my favorite movies since I was a toddler. 😍
My absolute favorite scene from this movie! I love the way Danny Kaye's gray shoes are the exact shade of his suit, and Vera Ellen's dress is dark pink underneath when she twirls. Sigh ...
Danny Kaye was brilliant in this film. I watch this film anytime I like and I don’t care if it’s Christmas or not. This film is simply timeless and is still as fresh as the day it was released. Unfortunately most films these days will never be true classics like this one. Look at this directors and learn what a classic movie is.
There was something very special about that era that we will never see again. My parents met at a dance in the 50s and it was very romantic. Dad said life was more simple then. Wish we could turn the clock back...

@@StereoSpace . From what I read of her, she was a really nice lady, a real classy person, she appears to have my recollection is that she basically spent the latter couple of decades of her life pretty much alone or something like that.
Danny Kaye was such a big part of my childhood. To this day, wherever I work, I end up having people trying to say "the pellet with the poison's in the vestle with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true." :)
Watching this movie, hans Christian anderson and the five pennies it becomes obvious to anyone with eyes and ears that danny kaye was the most gifted entertainer that ever lived. His singing and dancing are so effortless it's like he's swinging to the floor on a cloud. Add to this his impressions and comic ability and you have a talent like no other. There will never be another like danny kaye!
Spectacular number- and I love how they're already in choreography mode even as they sail outside, before the song begins. Considering that this was intended to be a Fred Astaire vehicle, Danny Kaye does just fine with Vera-Ellen, thank you very much. And there is commentary on the DVD by Rosemary Clooney herself on his smart Edith Head threads: Head purposely bedecked Kaye in a singular shade of grey from top to bottom (including the socks and those awesome suede shoes)- so the line of color wouldn't break up. Smart stuff. And what a dance! It goes from a standard quick-step to a pole dance, to a flamenco, and finally sails across a gantry/hangar before Ms. Clooney breaks the whole thing up. It's always fun to pull this out and watch- even if it's out of season. 'Cause we can all dance like pros in front of the TV.
Such a beautiful number - beautiful people dancing beautifully in beautiful clothes to beautiful music - what could be better! Our "artists" today can't duplicate any aspect of this scene - NOT ONE. So beautiful and elegant. Nothing like today’s dancing.
Great point
Today's dancing is mostly glorified walking! 😂
Now gone forever, this glorious period in Hollywood!
I remember going through a craze of it in my mid teens to early 20’s
I love Danny's shoes which match his suit. Someone mentioned that for someone not known as a dancer, he really held his own in this number. I love when he swings around the poles.
Gray suede, what a great choice to go with his suit.
They also match the floor. He did well in this number, but he wasn't known for his footwork. Still, one of my favorite dance numbers!
they make it look easy don't they!!!
windstorm1000 An that's the result of years of hard work and practice...
Rosemary Clooney is so pretty in this movie, her hairstyle and dress is so nice. I love her voice too, so calming and full of warmth. :)
Agreed. My eyes were always admiring her, not that Vera wasn't pretty.
After she made this movie with Bing Crosby.they went on tour together.did shows
Jay, I agree with you...I first saw this movie at the age of 8 (1975), going through a rough time...and it was the first time I saw Rosemary and heard her sing, she was beautiful (and as she got older she was still beautiful to me) her voice was calming and full of warmth, and her singing was just the same...I became a huge fan & fell in love with her...really wanted her as a 'big' sister...I finally got to see her live in concert in 1994...and with this dance scene I fell in love with Danny, and wished he would twirl me around the floor that way! :)
I'm back again. Just watch Danny's hands. Seductive gentleness and grace. Who could resist? What artistry, talent, production values in this whole scene!!! Thanks, again!
I'd've melted in his arms if I'd been her. LOL
@@imme4789 (sigh) (-:
Danny's voice cracking on "weigh" was so adorable!
I hope some of people watching this are young so they will know how wonderful some old Hollywood films were so incredible!
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
Am I the only one who also loves the set? Wish I could go there myself.
"What is this? The best two out of three?" I love that line!
Betty is the best! 😂
That dress has a life of its own
Hello Maria, How are you doing?
I am always amazed that they built this very large, very elaborate set (with a pond!) just for this one song. Sparing no expense sometimes makes a great cinematic moment even better.
God bless Danny and Vera. We need this movie and these actors now more than ever. Corney, ya. We need corney.
This is such a great scene so it was worth it! It's my favorite scene, though there are close seconds in this wonderful movie!
Lots of code violations though. Missing railings.
@@Youngstown529 That's a joke right?
@@JoanneJaworski No, I used to work with home inspectors. If this was a real place, it would be closed down due to code violations. Also, how does a restaurant in Florida survive without a roof? It rains practically daily.
We’re practically strangers... yeah well we would like to take care of that too😭😂‼️❤️
This is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing dance scenes EVER! Brilliant performances by Danny and Vera!❤️
There's a part where one of them almost stumbled
One of the sweetest, romantic dance sequence ever put on film.
Great performance. Not being known for his dancing, he sure does darn well.....and, of course, Vera is spectacular as always. You can see how he "shows off the girl", and "she shows off the dance"....a good rule dancing couples follow doing a routine. Thanks for the terrific upload.
Not being known for his dancing?? Look up some others of his movies, or from his variety show, and you will see why he was known for his dancing, singing, comedy, drama, and anything I have not mentioned.
+Grace Engler Thanks for the heads up....actually I never saw him dance before....I only remember his comedy. I will look up his other You Tube uploads.
+John M Vera Ellen was chosen for her part because she was a professional dancer by trade. Danny Kaye may have been chosen because he also had a background in dancing and singing.
@@mytahoma I know what you mean but, in truth, he was not known specifically as a dancer in the vein of a Fred Astaire or a Gene Kelly or a Donald O'Connor. He had danced on the Borscht Belt and in Vaudeville and learned on the job. As far as I'm aware, he never took dance training as would a professional dancer. But this only makes his abilities all the more remarkable. I don't think John M was in any way taking anything away from Danny Kaye's mesmerizing talent
Vera Ellen doesn’t sing period. Her singing is dubbed. But that’s okay. She dances beautifully.
Vera-Ellen, best dancer to have walked the earth :)
You said it. She has to do everything her partner did....while wearing heels and moving backwards. Yes I know this was said about Ginger Rogers....but Vera-Ellen.... nobody could dance like her
“He thought the best all-around dancer was Vera-Ellen and the best tapper was Eleanor Powell while Donald O’Connor was the most unsung,” said Patricia Ward Kelly (Gene Kelly’s wife).
blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/07/24/gene-kellys-widow-doesnt-dance-away-from-his-secrets/
“I think she was the best dancer outside of Peggy Ryan I ever danced with…I know for a fact that Astaire and Kelly truly respected her as a dancer; you can tell from the way they danced with her that they felt she was someone truly special.” -Donald O’Connor’s kind words about Vera-Ellen.
“She was a real accomplished dancer, that girl…ballet, tap dancing, anything you wanted to do.” -Fred Astaire
“I would look at [Vera-Ellen’s] extensions and laugh[ed] because I could never do that.” -Debbie Reynolds -William Morrow & Co.

Solitary Monarchist Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers
I agree she is superb, but no Eleanor Powell
Solitary Monarchist gene Kelly is the best dancer
This scene is so magical and fun. Honestly you could say that about any of the scenes in this movie. The talented singers, the talented dancers…I wish people did movies like that still. With really good music that has really good dancers to go with it. That’s very rare nowadays.
They do! You just need to look better. Have you watched West Side Story?

Danny Kaye, Vera Ellen, and a great tune by Irving Berlin. It doesn't get any better than this.
Yes Irving was a spectacular song writer.....we were blessed to have him....he was magical in the way he created music...R.i.p. Dear man..😇❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Danny Kate was the best all around entertainer ever. His comedy, his wit, his intellect and his love for kids can only be matched by Jerry lewis. 2 of the greatest humanitarian entertainers ever.
+James Mongan Danny Kaye*
did you know he was the third choice for the role? can't imagine the movie without his antic energy!!
Notice how Danny rarely take his eyes off of Vera......He was such an incredible dancer, singer, actor, comedian.......and yes.....he stole the show !
And he was a very sexy man too....
Vera did it all in VERY high heels, tho. I say she is phenomenal.
If only Florida was this classy and clean .

Used to be until foreign came in. Why don't they just leave ya know?
This is my favorite dance routine in the whole movie. I love Danny Kaye in anything he does. He was a wonderful actor, comedian and singer!
Vera Ellen, What a charming dancing angel. I`m envious of Danny Kaye because he could dance with such lovely Vera.
She really is a dream, isn't she?
She really WAS an angel.
One of the most enjoyable dance routines ever in the movies ... just pleasant ... beautiful ... elegant ... wonderful. GOD Bless all of those who put this routine together for the rest of us to enjoy.
jwmcmac I also love very much this dance even more elegant and I can say dreamy is her dance with fantastic Donald O'Connor.

Danny Kaye doesn't have that bad of a voice but I cannot get enough of Vera Ellen's dancing in this number!
Danny Kaye's voice is so seductively soothing and the dancing with Vera Ellen is superb: I love this video!
Hello Martha, How are you doing?
Every vintage melody gives me a gentle feeling and full of love. 💕
Proof that Danny Kaye could sing and dance without the comedy any time he wanted to. He just rarely wanted to. Lucky for us.
My favorite Christmas movie ever. Four super stars is such a treat: Bing, Danny, Rosemary, and Vera.
Yes ROSEMARY WAS A BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS AS WELL...FUNNY LADY....MISS HER AS WELL....EVERYBODY WAS SUPER TALENTED IN THESE MOVIES..R.I.P DEAR LADY😇❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
vera ellen was amazing dancer.
I've also seen her in On the Town and Belle of New York where she danced with Fred Astaire
I always thought Danny was the most graceful of all. He floated. I saw a male ballet dancer once who floated--never anyone else.
Notice Danny's attire All in Gray! From top to shoes! That's how Edith Head designed it !!
I love how Danny's shoes match his suit perfectly.
The costume designer said she made the shoes and socks the same color as the suit to make Danny look even taller….
Why can't movies be like this again?
Hollywood expects too much these days and audience preferences change
My dad introduced me to his love of all Classics. He loved dancing and this was a favorite of his. When he was on his last days I put this on my phone so we could have one more time watching together. Even though he couldn’t talk his hand went up and moved with the music. I now watch and have tears of happiness.
That's just beautiful .....you made me cry .....seriously.....😥😇❤❤
Priceless going away gift.
I just love this clip and the whole movie. Just magical. Love Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen. Amazing !
Hello Linda, How are you doing?
I miss choreography like this. *sighs*
Watch closely starting at 3:30 when Vera-Ellen twirls around behind Danny Kaye and kicks his foot- she recovers nicely though. She was so graceful about it, though, that no one at the time of filming even caught it!
kerryincolumbus @ 3:32 - her toe catches his foot ...😮😯😕🙃🙂
Wow, sharp eyes! I've watched this movie dozens of times and never saw that.
Aahhhh.. GENIUSES never die.
Sigh ...
i'm a bloke Jill and I think the costumes are sensational ..the colours compliment each other perfectly...err...i'll get back to the football now :p
Colors and costuming by the late great Edith Head.
Notice the partner she also dances with wears green slacks with matching green shoes...another Edith Head touch!!

Now that is talent. Singing while dancing with amazing rhythm and grace. Favorite scene of the movie.

They just don't make 'em like this any more. People who can sing and dance and act, all at the same time... that's what makes a superstar.
Dam they look and dance great together-- This performance is flawless. Oh how i wish life could be so perfect
And Vera is dancing in three or four inch heels!
Singapom888 I can't walk very fast in very high heels & I can't walk down stairs very well in very high heels. I twisted my ankle while going down stairs in very high heels but little heels I can do OK.
Singapom888 ... more like 2" - 2& 1/2 " heels - strongly suggesting looking more closely 🤓🔎...four inch heels w/ that routine ?😱😨😄😆just my humble opinion.....very unlikely....👎 ......🙂✌

Danny Kaye was such a big part of my childhood. To this day, wherever I work, I end up having people trying to say "the pellet with the poison's in the vestle with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true." :)

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.
Yes! I always loved watching his movies.😃
I am so glad I have this movie on DVD.
They dance so effortlessly...

Excellent analysis. Thanks!
Such a beautiful number - beautiful people dancing beautifully in beautiful clothes to beautiful music - what could be better! Our "artists" today can't duplicate any aspect of this scene - NOT ONE.
