The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing - Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen

- From White Christmas (1954). Here is my most beloved performance from my favorite movie musical Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen performing an Irving Berlin classic. Their talent really shines in this performance. Having left the Army following W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, as the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General. Also starring Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.
Just FYI. Danny Kaye, in addition to being an extremely talented actor, comedian, singer, and dancer, was also a true master chef, jet engine pilot, orchestra conductor, and first celebrity spokesman for UNICEF. He was a true Renaissance man. Also, he so stole this movie!!
+ccrowe256 Yes, so talented, I loved him singing. I had quite a crush on him as a teenager and saw all his films that were shown in Finland. Red hair! I remember watching the "Court Jester" and in one section laughed so hard that I could hardly breath.
ccrowe256 also; he couldn’t read music. At all. Zip. He was sooooo freaking awesome !
Disagree! It was all 25/25/25/25 this movie!
Of course! That's why his wife wrote "All My Husbands" as a rhyme about her one love, Danny.
Danny Kaye was so wonderful. Such a huge talent.
I have always adored that dress.
I do too. I'd love to dance well enough to have danced with my partner. And assuming I've ever had enough money to have done so, I'd have bought that dress for her even if it meant I had to work for the next couple years eating beans and rice (Chili Colorado anyone) to be able top pay for it.I do wonder what it would cost to have one made these days. any ideas anyone? donrjr 509 624-6858 PST
her shoes are perfect too!
Love 💕 the pink dress and silver shoes. These two can dance 💃. Amazing movie 🎥!

same!!
My gosh! Look at Vera's heavenly dress with the swirling layers of chiffon and her petite Barbie doll figure!
Chiara leah always loved the dresses in this. Edith Head at it again.
A little bit too petite. She suffered from anorexia.
Or she was dancer and required to perform this way for long periods of time. One of the two...
Was she the inspiration for Barbie? I can certainly see it if that were true.
Mon Mothma seriously skinny, it’s scary
If I ever get married, I want this to be one of the songs I dance to at the wedding!
i was just thinking the same thing!!
Same I want me and my wife to dance this on our lesbian wedding

That's beautiful😁
Kurt Elling does a beautiful rendition of this song.
I want to live in that world.
Lagunacool As much as I am proud to have been born in the 90's, I totally agree to live in a time of less crazy troubles
I agree totally!!
The great thing is, you do :)
Oh so do I!!
@Mike Grayson hmmm, not sure I agree, after all, look at Vera Ellen and
🌹mary Clooney; they had wonderful opportunities.
"I guess I got carried away."
"She took me with her, I don't weigh that much."
How, after seeing this movie about 15 times, have I never noticed this line?!
I watch this movie every year at Christmas. I always notice something different with each twirl, whirl and song.
I watched it the second time and only then did I understand the humor of that conversation lol.
He's not lying, Vera Ellen was the male Astaire and carted her partners around just like Astaire carried his.
@@xxwhispersxx2856 I think you mean female Astaire ...
@@m.layfette6249 Credit goes to Irving Berlin!
I kinda feel like “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” from the Sound of Music film got inspiration from this scene.
You're absolutely right!
Yeah ! Even just the dress remind me of it !
Top Hat - Fred and Ginger - Thunder Storm
Ah I was just thinking of that dress! Yes this dress, Sixteen Going on Seventeen dress, and the Dirty Dancing "Time of My Life" dress made me believe that twirling and moving around in light fabric are the best ways to make a woman feel elegant and pretty. It's the only way I see myself dressed when I own my 1st home, gliding down stairwells and cascading over sofas & chairs.
smithbros1000 Oh yeah! I’ve watched Top Hat twice and I never connected that. Sounds like they paid homage to that too.

"Well, we'd like to take care of that too." 😂

Wish more men helped women in need....instead of being like the movie...DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS....😥
I’m 21 years old and I know more about actors and movies from the golden age of Hollywood than the junk of today’s movies. I love the style, the manners, the class. Nothing crude, vulgar, or suggestive. Women were women, men were men. Both gracious
I'm 26 and my grandparents' tradition was that we watch White Christmas every year on Christmas Eve (we still do). I cherish this movie and this song so much and the movies of today will never ever live up to this.
Exactly@@ShianneCoast
I'm flat out 16 and I enjoy the old movies 100 times better than the new stuff. I flat out like older things in general. it's just better, everything is more natural and flows better.
Agreed! @@uniqubearbear3120
Everything is matching on Danny even his shoes, he was a terrific actor, I really miss all the great actors of that era !
This is wonderful, as Rosemary Clooney said. I agree with her it's just a perfect dance scene. During her commentary on White Christmas she mentions how much Danny loved doing this, and how hard he worked on it. Well, it sure shows. My favorite dance scene ever, love this.
Carole
Vera Ellen & Donald O'Conner did a Dance Scene VERY, VERY similar to this in the movie "Call me Madam". A great dancing, singing movie...but the water dance is strikingly so similar, even up to the end where they speed up the music!!! (lol)
Here's the clip
ua-cam.com/video/sJ6-IAcU1cU/v-deo.html
@@borninthewrongtime6449 It's similar to a degree, the starting in a ballroom and going outside by the water is the same, but I don't think that dance is as fluid and one of a kind as this one, they even had a much better dance number in the same movie, 'something to dance about'.
@@CarSVernon "Something to Dance About" is a delightful piece but it's much more acrobatic, with the stairs and the barrels and his tap and her ballet moves.
It really matters not, I love Vera Ellen in anything. Adore & think Donald O'Conner was underrated in Hollywood. Have the upmost respect for Bing Crosby, but Danny Kaye (being the 3rd choice as his partner) was perfect in this role. I love Danny Kaye's body of work. Of course, speaking of dancing, one cannot leave out Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Both utterly amazing, each different in their own way. I think you now understand why my name is what it is, bc I love old movies, especially musicals. Give me a run of Judy Garland & Gene/ Fred & Ginger/ Donald & Debbie Reynolds, and my day off is set !!
Happy Watching in 2022 !

My youngest sister broke my VHS tape of the movie. I was so mad.
LOL.I just watched it yesterday. Ive seen it so many times that now while enjoying it ....I find out little continuity problems. There are quite a few. For instance watch their feet as the dance concludes. She almost trips on Danny's foot.

The trouble with Hollywood movies these days,is that there is zero talent involved! I know things move on etc but look at the innocence that these movies were all about. The beauty of this is astonishing.
I cant remember any star i would see every movie with
The first time I watched this as a little girl, I fell in love with Danny Kaye!
Vera Ellen for me :p
Danny is an excellent actor and dancer. One of my favorites.
And I fell in love with Vera-Ellen.
Me too. Although for me it was in Hans Christian Anderson. He’s marvelous.
A man of enormous charm. I've loved him for so long. And now I'm 76, and he's still seductivly attractive to me. Lucky Eve Arden has a long, intense affair with him a jillion years ago and I can sure see why!!!
Oh, so did I. And when he did those arial spins around the posts... I thought he was truly magical.
I will always be eternally grateful that Fred Astaire and Donald O'Connor could not do this movie. I've been watching this since I was a little girl and Danny has always been my favorite. It wouldn't have been the same or had the same charm if Fred or Donald were in it. Bravo Danny! RIP.
Agreed. It just wouldnt have been as good nor certainly as zany.
I love all three but it definitely was meant to be Danny Kaye in this movie
Fred Astaire played with Crosby in Holiday Inn and I couldn't stand him cause he came off as such a weasel.
Danny did a good job, but Donald O'Connor would've been a nice addition; he even said later on that some of the numbers clearly looked like they were meant for him.
@@hotwax9376 I like the way the movie turned out I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
I remember everything about the day I first saw this movie when it was in the theaters just before Christmas in 1954. When we went in, it was totally dry outside, but when we left, there was 4 inches of snow! To me this movie has always been magical, and with the two sisters, is it any wonder I fell in love with blondes? Ironically many years later, in Tacoma, WA, I helped a fellow save the remainder of Bing Crosby's items (pipes, toupees, memorabilia, etc.) that were stored in an old warehouse, in the very same city where Bing was born. Those items ended up at Gonzaga University, and were saved from being thrown on an auction block to help create a rocker's tribute in Seattle. Sure glad we got there in time!
I saw them when I attended Gonzaga in 1982. God bless you!
As a child growing up in Puyallup--I would always watch this movie- I think I have seen every year for the past 50
Glad you saved them in time, too. Classics like this don't deserve to be slated for some rick fest. Just saying.
Now gone forever, this glorious period in Hollywood!
I remember going through a craze of it in my mid teens to early 20’s
I mean how much talent did this one guy have?
+Phil Audino Well probably not that much really, but he could do that Vaudeville thing where he leaned all the way forward without face-planting on the floor, which was pretty cool. Bob Hope could do that, too.
Danny Kaye was definitely a renaissance man where his talents were seemingly endless! He could sing, he could dance, act, he was comedy gold, and he was the tongue twister master. I wish I could have met him.
Strange - with you name, you're Italian and I'm not but was there a guy in that clip? Just kidding of course, I just wish I could have, hell, still wish I could dance that well, with a partner like her. My problem o trouble - yo soy muy viejo!"
And he had a commercial pilot’s license.
ALL of it!
"Forty five minutes, all to myself" LOL.
"You sure will be enough?"
they make it look easy don't they!!!
windstorm1000 An that's the result of years of hard work and practice...
We’re practically strangers... yeah well we would like to take care of that too😭😂‼️❤️
This choreography has everything...Vera was amazing!
I love Danny's shoes which match his suit. Someone mentioned that for someone not known as a dancer, he really held his own in this number. I love when he swings around the poles.
Gray suede, what a great choice to go with his suit.
They also match the floor. He did well in this number, but he wasn't known for his footwork. Still, one of my favorite dance numbers!
I hope some of people watching this are young so they will know how wonderful some old Hollywood films were so incredible!
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
Danny's voice cracking on "weigh" was so adorable!
So beautiful and elegant. Nobody's half-naked; nobody's bumping & grinding.
You're right! And may I say that there's something beautifully sexy when it's done this way.

Watch closely starting at 3:30 when Vera-Ellen twirls around behind Danny Kaye and kicks his foot- she recovers nicely though. She was so graceful about it, though, that no one at the time of filming even caught it!

I am always amazed that they built this very large, very elaborate set (with a pond!) just for this one song. Sparing no expense sometimes makes a great cinematic moment even better.
God bless Danny and Vera. We need this movie and these actors now more than ever. Corney, ya. We need corney.

Rosemary Clooney is so pretty in this movie, her hairstyle and dress is so nice. I love her voice too, so calming and full of warmth. :)

After she made this movie with Bing Crosby.they went on tour together.did shows
Jay, I agree with you...I first saw this movie at the age of 8 (1975), going through a rough time...and it was the first time I saw Rosemary and heard her sing, she was beautiful (and as she got older she was still beautiful to me) her voice was calming and full of warmth, and her singing was just the same...I became a huge fan & fell in love with her...really wanted her as a 'big' sister...I finally got to see her live in concert in 1994...and with this dance scene I fell in love with Danny, and wished he would twirl me around the floor that way! :)
They stole the show in this movie, they play off each other so perfectly
Notice how Danny rarely take his eyes off of Vera......He was such an incredible dancer, singer, actor, comedian.......and yes.....he stole the show !

There was something very special about that era that we will never see again. My parents met at a dance in the 50s and it was very romantic. Dad said life was more simple then. Wish we could turn the clock back...
Proof that Danny Kaye could sing and dance without the comedy any time he wanted to. He just rarely wanted to. Lucky for us.

Not being known for his dancing?? Look up some others of his movies, or from his variety show, and you will see why he was known for his dancing, singing, comedy, drama, and anything I have not mentioned.
+Grace Engler Thanks for the heads up....actually I never saw him dance before....I only remember his comedy. I will look up his other You Tube uploads.
+John M Vera Ellen was chosen for her part because she was a professional dancer by trade. Danny Kaye may have been chosen because he also had a background in dancing and singing.
@@mytahoma I know what you mean but, in truth, he was not known specifically as a dancer in the vein of a Fred Astaire or a Gene Kelly or a Donald O'Connor. He had danced on the Borscht Belt and in Vaudeville and learned on the job. As far as I'm aware, he never took dance training as would a professional dancer. But this only makes his abilities all the more remarkable. I don't think John M was in any way taking anything away from Danny Kaye's mesmerizing talent
Vera Ellen doesn’t sing period. Her singing is dubbed. But that’s okay. She dances beautifully.
Pure .joy watching them dance in this movie!
They just don't make 'em like this any more. People who can sing and dance and act, all at the same time... that's what makes a superstar.

Danny Kaye's voice is so seductively soothing and the dancing with Vera Ellen is superb: I love this video!
Hello Martha, How are you doing?
Kaye does a great job with this number which was supposedly choregraphed not by Alton but by Fosse. I imagine that Fosse probably added and cleaned up the material. You can see with the many cuts that there were likely a lot of takes and parts were pieced together, which works with prerecorded music because the tempo is always the same. Pretty much all old Hollywood numbers were done this way. Cuts to perfect each part of the dance, to adjust lighting, move the camera and also to change his suit because of sweating (hot lights, no AC) and also not to look like you are out of breath at the finish. In addition, when you are creating dances like this, you have to work very close with the musical director to deal with style, musical accents etc. that makes the dance exciting. It is a big job. People don't realize what it took to create these amazing numbers in the old movies. The fact that Kaye was a guy who moved well but was not a pro dancer...dancing with probably Hollywood's best technical female dancer was choreographed in a way that made them both look perfect together.
I love watching these two dance together. Danny Kaye might not have had the athleticism of Gene Kelly or the grace and fluidity of Fred Astaire, but he was still a great dancer in his own right and Vera Ellen was AWESOME. And together, they made a kind of magic that's hard to explain, but still a wondrous thing to watch, especially when Vera Ellen was wearing a pretty dress!
JoMarieM And remarkably, Danny Kaye had no formal dance training. He just jumped in and did what the choreographer wanted. That he could keep up with Vera Ellen is pretty amazing.
+Mark Schildberg Donald O'Connor was supposed to play the role Danny Kaye did, but I think he either had an accident or was not available for the filming at the last minute. Wikipedia will have the whole story for sure!
+Mark Schildberg Yes, further to my other message, this is what Wikepedia says: White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn(1942) - where the song 'White Christmas' first appeared - and Blue Skies (1946). Astaire declined the project after reading the script[3] and asked to be released from his contract with Paramount.[4] Crosby also left the project shortly thereafter, to spend more time with his sons after the death of his wife, Dixie Lee.[4] Near the end of January 1953, Crosby returned to the project, and Donald O'Connor was signed to replace Astaire.[4] Just before shooting was to begin, O'Connor had to drop out due to illness and was replaced by Danny Kaye, who asked for and received a salary of $200,000 and 10% of the gross.
I always thought Danny was the most graceful of all. He floated. I saw a male ballet dancer once who floated--never anyone else.

It's amazing how top heavy with talent Hollywood was back then. In addition to Danny Kaye, there was Gene Kelly, Gene Nelson and Fred Astaire, and others. Among females, there was Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron, Doris Day, Mitzi Gaynor, and others. Most of these people could sing and were good actors to boot. Must've been very tough, with all that competition.
Danny Kaye doesn't have that bad of a voice but I cannot get enough of Vera Ellen's dancing in this number!
They dance so effortlessly...
01:57 The way he gracefully pulls her close to him ❤️ this is possibly the most romantic dance scene ever put on screen, followed closely by the dance scene in ‘call me madam’ (also featuring the beautiful Vera Ellen).
Watching this movie, hans Christian anderson and the five pennies it becomes obvious to anyone with eyes and ears that danny kaye was the most gifted entertainer that ever lived. His singing and dancing are so effortless it's like he's swinging to the floor on a cloud. Add to this his impressions and comic ability and you have a talent like no other. Kaye is so smooth; while not being a Gene Kelly or Bing in dancing or singing. He is just right as his own unique and marvelous self...my favorite number in the film...
Danny Kaye was brilliant in this film. I watch this film anytime I like and I don’t care if it’s Christmas or not. This film is simply timeless and is still as fresh as the day it was released. Unfortunately most films these days will never be true classics like this one. Look at this directors and learn what a classic movie is.
