I had no idea Marge Champion was alive until Late Oct 2020... Whenever I hear Gower Champion's name, I think of My LA, Hollywood Grandparents' who lived on N Bronson Ave around the corner from Melrose & N Gower where RKO Studio Pictures was 'which later became Desilu Gower Studios in Late '57
Terrific! Merci! What a delight. They remind me of one of my favorite musical numbers from this era where a man and woman sing and dance across the floor, down the elevator and into the street and I'm talking about Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman singing and dancing to the Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer song, "Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," from the film, HERE COMES THE GROOM. CHEERS!
They were just fantastic. He, did the most amazing tap in Tea for Two, Doris Day film, he jumps up and down stairs tapping, using the bannisters. Around 1953..... Together in Show Boat. RIP Marge
Dorothy Fields, who rewrote the lyrics to the song for "Roberta" with Fred and Ginger, rewrote some of the lyrics again for this version. The intro is completely different (and very clever), and the line about doing "the Continental" is replaced with a rhyme with "accidental".
This is brilliant and should have been included in one of the “That’s Entertainment” series , along with ‘Life Upon The Wicked Stage’. I would love to have seen Gower dance with Vera Ellen ; those two really did it for me.Thank you for this underrated gem.
Terry Asheim It wasn't the remake it was the opening of the broadway musical, which was based on an earlier film yes but you wouldn't call a stage adaptation a remake.
Funny thing is: this song isn't about holding off an unwanted dance partner, it's about liking someone so much that when you hold them in your arms you're going to make love to them, not dance with them... That isn't present in any staging of this number.
I Will Sing And Dance With Charli While She Sings To Me And When My Grandpa Will Watch Us And I Cant Run Around She Will Say That's Not Dancing This Is Dancing
The only mention of this that I am aware of his Shirley’s implication in her autobiography that Gower was flirtatious for whatever reason. This was a detail in her life we did not need. He was not married at the time. I think she had a childhood infatuation that never subsided. Pure rubbish.
Disappointing. Especially that dress. After 10 years away from MGM, Adrian returned to design the gowns for this movie. He did much better in the past.
James Ryan, compare this dress which Marge is wearing with some of the dresses Adrian designed for the 1939 picture The Women. This was the "Adrian look". The dress fits the scene perfectly. Marge is playing a couturiere/fashion designer in Lovely To Look At 1952. You would not expect her to be wearing an evening gown while on the job.
Ah, back when music was music and real talent like the Champions could perform. I sure miss the good old days.
RIP Marge Champion
Thank you very much for the terrific performances, Snow White. At 101 years of age you have finally earned your peace
Rest well
So beautiful and joyful I adored these musicals as a child . Now at84 yrs this is even more enchanting. Gorgeous.
Rest in Peace Marge Champion:
September 2, 1919- October 21, 2020
What a treasure. She was the last living member of the main cast of the film version of Showboat. She will be dearly missed.

BLISS!!!
RIP Marge Champion, well-named and charmed of life.
Sublime in a chaotic mad world.
Beautiful dancer. You can tell she had ballet training...her lines r so clean.

Sheer beautiful perfection. I love them.
Great dancing and choreography!
Just terrific. RIP Marge Champion. Recommend Robert D McFadden's obituary of her today at the NYT. Thanks.

They were just fantastic. He, did the most amazing tap in Tea for Two, Doris Day film, he jumps up and down stairs tapping, using the bannisters. Around 1953.....
Together in Show Boat. RIP Marge
he wasn't in tea for two that was gene nelson
To borrow from MGM's "Now That's Entertainment".......
Dorothy Fields, who rewrote the lyrics to the song for "Roberta" with Fred and Ginger, rewrote some of the lyrics again for this version. The intro is completely different (and very clever), and the line about doing "the Continental" is replaced with a rhyme with "accidental".
'Dorothy Fields was one great lyricist..... She also worked with composer Cy Coleman & other great composers from The Great American Songbook
Love it!

"I've been looking everywhere for "Life Upon the Wicked Stage". It's the best!
@@starababa1985 Pretty sure it's in the Kathryn Grayson version of "Show Boat".
My parents told me and my siblings that we were related to Marge and Gower Champion. Always wished it was true and that I had a way of finding out.
RIP, Marge Champion.
Beautiful 😍
Imagine how many takes they must have had to do to get this right. Its all one shot.
I came here from America's Got Talent then Michael Buble. Love this. Gower is hot. Thanks for posting this rarity.
I LOVED THEM WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER.
R. I. P. Marge Champion
Still, you have to ask what it was that Fred Astaire brought to the screen (with Ginger Rogers) that could never be duplicated,
Marge Champion is obviously a more technically trained dancer than Ginger.
The clearly weren't trying to duplicate them
Какое приятное было белое искусство Запада!
Где оно всё?
Выродилось...
Великолепно, и по прошествии более полувека.
really nice
lol that's awesome
❤️
And She Will Sing I Will Tap Dance Like Fred Astaire And Gene Kelly And Danny Kaye
Great video. Really enjoyed it.
She reminds me of Alice Kramden in that dress.
Gower became a very successful director on Broadway later in life. Died on opening night of the re-make of "42nd Street."
Remake?
That's right, and Marge is still alive as of 2016. She is 96 now.
Terry Asheim It wasn't the remake it was the opening of the broadway musical, which was based on an earlier film yes but you wouldn't call a stage adaptation a remake.
Technically when it's re-staged like 42nd Street was, it's called a Revival.
Exceptionally difficult to dance around props.
...and in high heels. RIP Marge.
Beautiful.
Why is the tempo so fast, though?
RIP. Real talent vs the hoax talent of today.
Understatement for sure.....
Ken, so true.
What type of dancing? I genuinely curious, its amazing.
Tap dance I don't even know as well
Broadway Dance, a cousin of Jazz Dance
Charli And I Will Be Fred Astaire And Ginger Rogers And The 2 Of Us Will Be Dancing Together As Friends And Buddies
That Why We Were Both Walking Together Last Year
was that their singing as well?
yes
And last night was fun

then go off somewhere and pout about it - the rest of us will enjoy this charming performance
I Will Sing And Dance With Charli While She Sings To Me And When My Grandpa Will Watch Us And I Cant Run Around She Will Say That's Not Dancing This Is Dancing
what's the name of this sorta dance?

@@vegas1a still alive?
@@fabriciofranco16 Can't find anything that says otherwise.
She is barely hanging in there.
Sadly she passed away on October 21, 2020 at 102.
And she told me to go that's why I get so frustrated when she does this to me
wonderful, though she should have been wearing one of the dresses on the mannequins instead...
I Wish Mickey Mouse Should Go To That And Kermit The Frog And Fozzie Bear
Naw ... I'm going over to watch this number with Fred and Ginger Im outta here !!!!
Bye bye, Snow White..
Just about the time when Gower had an affair with.... Shirley Temple!
I wonder what an "affair" with the good ship lollipop would be like?
The only mention of this that I am aware of his Shirley’s implication in her autobiography that Gower was flirtatious for whatever reason. This was a detail in her life we did not need. He was not married at the time. I think she had a childhood infatuation that never subsided. Pure rubbish.
