In another video you showed how to fix plastic. Today I fixed my side covers the way you showed it, using melted zip-ties. It worked perfectly, thank you!
So good to see someone who knows what they have and the work that went into it.
That Spark Plug socket is Great , i need one of those old Sockets , they're the best .
All the best mate .
Cheers
Learned a lot on the dyno testing ... thanks for walking through the results. And yes I thought right away ditch that blue filter ,,, it takes the eyes off the fabulous flame and skull work!
Thanks buddy, you're right, I bought it for it's performance due to the twin cone design, which gives more filtration area on a smaller filter and it's the perfect size for a Sreamin' Eagle rain sock, which is black and will do the job perfectly !
Usable and safe power that will work well on the road, can't get better than that. I have enjoyed watching this latest project. Thankyou Del, Penny and Mackie.
Thanks buddy, it's been a fun project, and we've learned lots of things along the way... and ain't that what it's all about - thank you for your support !
nice ride with plenty of useable torque all in the grin factor range.good to have the history with it, saves a lot of head scratchin.enjoy, stay safe. all the best.
You're dead right there buddy, that history saved me a lot of expensive research when the results of the graph matched the set up, I knew it was deliberate !
I wouldn't be disappointed with that result, good usable power and safe!previous owner knew what he wanted and set it up accordingly......now go and have some fun!!great video D & P.
Thanks Peter, it is indeed properly set up to just be a fabulous grunty road bike, and it sounds awseome too
This was my bike 20 +years ago, I paid a professional company to fit that turbo, it was on six pounds of boost and 182 hp on the crank and 168 at the wheel. I did take it on a drag strip as a standard bike and best recorded time was 11.76 @115mph nearly a second off standard times. With the turbo I can only estimate it at about 10.5 seconds, as it pulled right up through the reave range so quickly.
Lovely looking bike Del and it sounded awesome on the rolling road,,,,,,,,, fast enough for me mate.
Hey Brother, just wanted to stop by and say hello !!! Great job on the paint, you know I like that. And as always great job on this bike. Glad to see your still doing "OUTSTANDING" work. I have been getting along slowly, might try getting back on the bike more but its been a tough several years. Still fighting through this though and hope to get some riding in. The time may have come to end my riding career, will see. Keep up the great work brother, you do things RIGHT. Not many take the time to do this, tell everyone on the forum hello and I wish you the best. Ride safe brother...... Again, GEAT JOB !!!
Hey Brother, so good to hear from you again, we were only thinking of you a week or so ago, and that we've not heard from you for a long time... so sorry to hear that life still presents it's challenges, but I guess that's the way things go... Shelby's passing must have hit you so hard, and do we ever recover from such bereavement...??
And yes, I agree, sometimes we look at our lives and we think whether riding the bikes has a part in our lives any more, I've thought it many times, but then on a spare day, with nowhere to go, I'll spark up the Harley, stick me boots in the breeze and just ride with my thoughts... we're lucky to live on the coast here in England, and the open road with the sea by your side is a great way to contemplate life and put things in order... I never fail to come back refreshed and renewed and ready to get on.... even though these days we don't rid with groups any more, we just don't get the time, and genuine friends you can trust can be thin on the ground sometimes... so, perhaps the biker lifestyle that we follow and live our lives by, has to change and evolve to suit the rest of our lives around it, but for me, the ability to swing a leg over my Harley and ride off for a few hours will always be one of the greatest healers... just like watching a sunset, or having a beer, and we would never give that up either, would we?
Thank you for your kind words on the videos, it's come a long way in the last year, ro so, and we are doing some crazy things now we never thought possible... but still trying to keep it grounded, and remember where it started, which is just a guy in his garage, kickin' out a little help and guidance to his fellow riders all round the world..
Stay strong buddy, know you're both thinking about you, and go with your heart as it's more sensible than your head on the riding... keep in touch, always good to hear from you, your friends, Del & Pennyx
again!! well done!very interesting!road and race aplications specs drawn by a very wise man!! une tres bonne recherche!bravo!!
Thanks Eric, I think so too... cheers !
Thanks for the reply del keep up the good work 👍
Ive been looking forward to this video..bike looks amazing and from the results you recieved i reckon it will ride like a dream
Cheers buddy, sure thing, the results actually explain 'why' it rides the way it does... peak torque is 6500rpm, and peak power is at 8500rpm, so when you set it up in 4th gear at about 50mph, just under the torque peak and nail it, it fires past cars like it's going backwards, it's been designed for road hooliganism lol
Moonfleet41 you cant beat a bit of road hooligism..and what a fantastic looking bike to do it on...awsome job mate....im so jelouse
Hi Del, I would consider that to be a good result. Hope you had a good trip to Sealey, looking forward to the video. It's still an amazing bike!!!
Had a fabulous day at Sealey, all the footage is in the can, just gotta edit in time for the weekend!
Love the video now the bike is back to gether it looks great and the sound of it now this is why I watch your videos.
Thank you Glenn, much appreciated...
Great video yet again very interesting. Look forward to the weekend video have a good week d&p. Mike
And you Mike, hope all is well with you, we're both thinking of you, let us know how you get on, PPx
I'm very pleased with that result (for you) I was wondering had the lump been beefed in any way to accept the horses..i assumed it was with the original figures...well the six year on retune makes perfect sense because assure as eggs is omelettes that would have let go at 180bhp...
That curve is a beautiful blend of torque and bhp ...after all that's exactly what an xjr is and most likely why it was chosen for the turbo job...
Bloody great news Del
Love and Peace ♥️
Exactly that brother Springy, big flat torque curve, peaking at 140ft lbs at 6000rpm, so much grunt it pulls tree stumps out..! Can't wait to go play silly beggers.... love and peace back atcha, D&Px
Enjoyed the video...great tunes as well.
Thanks buddy, much appreciated!
Loved every minute of this build. 131 rampant ponies is enough for anyone on the road. I have an xjr1300 with stubby scorpion cans on it sounds awesome and pulls like a train, so I bet yours feels amazing on the road. P.s I’ve learned a ton of stuff watching your vids and in the process saved a shit load of money keep it up 🏍👍
Hi Alistair, The biggest happy turnout is the torque...its making 100ft lb now, and the factory figure claimed was only 67.... so as much as its only making about 35BHP over the claimed factory power... its making 50% more torque.. and as we all know, Grunt it what makes for a fun bike, and its the XJR's party piece aye...lol
Exactly Del, I looked up the specs, one publication had 94 at the wheel and you have 131. All the talk is about the torque, this bike is gonna have one hell of a launch, like a Triumph Rocket 3 I guess !
The graph reminded me of a modern turbo di diesel, less of a curve, more a slab.
Love XJRs, sweet turbo. Very nice.
Well done Del. Good to see you using our local dyno at MSR, great chaps. I agree it's not how many horses you have but their size!!!!! Rather have 131 Clydesdales than 183 New Forest Ponies!!
Too right buddy, I knew Mark and Colin before they opeend MSR some 20-odd years ago, and they've made an amazing success of it , friendly, helpful advice, and they know what they're talking about... and you're dead right, them little cute Japanese ponies are nothing like a fat Clydesdale, maybe they're sea horses lol !
Amazed at how well it started, my eyebrows went up because it was barely a one turn and fired up, ace.
Sure thing mate, it always starts like that, full choke, tiny bit of throttle and it's away, could be because it runs a pressurised fuel pump rather than just gravity... the last time when it was coughing when first got it home, was due to the crappy old pink HT leads, one of the plugs was too wide and the paintwork was the wrong colour lol !
Very good point man!!! This is why i got a S1000R vs the S1000RR. Its all about useable fun on the road!!! Your humor was absolutely priceless in the video. LMAO "fisher price"
I hear that so much about the Beemer, a buddy of mine did it years ago, sold his ZX10R for a Z1000 and had 4x more fun on the road!
I'd be happy to throw a leg over that 😜
Thumbs up from over the pond where it is till Tuesday!
Cheers, Bob
Thanks Bob, it's only a halfway mark, still got loads of cosmetics to deal with, but that's gonna be a second little project over the winter... thank you for your support mate...
All things taken and in the real world it's a great result Del...enjoy
yeah exactly that Tony, 100bhp down at 4500rpm, and 100ftlb torque at 6500rpm... thats grunt in a box..
I think this project has been my most enjoyable so far mate. Just something about bringing back an older bike and making it clean and tidy. Probably just my OCD style! lol Nice work mate. Can't wait for the wheel paint vid.
Hi Tor, am gonna call it down for a little while, as wanna enjoy riding it in the last few weeks of the summer, and will return to it in the winter for the wheel paint!
Absolutely mate. Enjoy the beast! Think she needs a naming comp though ;-)
Nicely done! Still very much in love with the bike. Would love to see a vid of it on the strip when you decide to run it. Even if it only gets 11.5 in the quarter.
Thanks buddy, but the drag strips so irrelevant for the way this has been tuned, it's make 100ft of torque, not 67 as claimed from the factory, so it's all about grunt and it hits at about 5000revs, which makes it so much fun !
Cant wait to see 360 of whole bike :)
Like you said Del, disappointing with only 131bhp, but very usable and it sounds mega. Glad to see the street fighter back in and looking forward to seeing the tool kit. Roll on the weekend.
Exactly mate, I really should have said maybe 'initial' disappointment, I'm actually really chuffed, especially with the 100ftlbs of torque at 6000 rpm, which explains why it lofts the front wheel in 1st and 2nd off the throttle !
Wish I had that type of HP ..lol..
Great point Del.My 1250 bandit is about 98 ponies, and absolutely pisses on highly tuned 600s , and some 1000s o-60, Real world is, well, real world.Back in the the early 90s, most manufacturers realised that 100bhp was more than what the "average" human could handle on some vehicle about the same weight as a washing machine! Said manufacturers ego took over.Love you`re work bud!Any bike over 100bhp, is imho, a waste of time on british roads. In the early 90s, my RGV250 was king in all the bike mags with a little over 50bhp!
You're so right mate, and I think that is the point with the whole muscle bike de-tune... all the big nakeds do it, and they get judged because they're 100bhp, or less, but in the real world they are usually puching more torque at 4000rpm than a 1litre sportsbike, it's where the word muscle comes from aye... and an RGV250?? Ooooh yeah....!
How did you achieve tuning (fuel) for turbo? Duna ignition , it works well smoothly уважением sincerely
Result !!!! Stay safe !!!!
My na XJR 1200 has 110 main jets. Engine has been converted to Fj 1200 specs + Akrapovitch 4 in 2 in 1. Goes to 8000 like a stock XJR 1300 but pulls and revs quite hapyly between 8 and 10. Also great fun. It is running 220 km/ h - how fast is Yours ?
That's still al lot of power, usable power to plant on the tarmac.
I understand the dissapointment, but also understand you're glad that the bike is so cleverly tuned.
A pluspoint for you del as you always want things to be correct and right not a half job! and right so!
Love that sound, brutal! people will hear you coming ;-)
looking forward to the next fighter update and sealey stuff.
Tc
Dieter
Thank you Dieter, exactly right, usable power... it's all about the driving grunt and not about the big numbers... it rides so smoothly and predictably with more rush than you'd ever need on the street, so I am more than happy with it !
That's such a cool bike. Once it's all running how you like it would cool to see a video of you riding it. Most people have no experience with turbo bikes so I'd love to see what they're like to ride and what the power is like.
I think that's certainly in order my friend, first sunny day off, I'll be camera'd up and out to play , but with work pressures right now, that may not be right away !
Hi have you looked into upgrading brakes to r1 blue spots noticed a big change on stopping power on mine
Yes indeed, I would love to, but they are quite expensive and not quite so available nowadays second hand, but they are on the list though !
I'd be delighted with that result too. 183 from an XJR would make you wince alright.
You're not wrong mate, I knew it was gonna be a low figure, as Sam rolled it up the revs, as it didn't make that final burst of acceleration at the end, it just cruised up to the rev limiter, which explains the flat power curve... tbh, with normal ignition and compression, I actually think 185+ would be a bit dangerous... these bikes made 97 from the factory and that was 'claimed' in the brochure, so in real world, about 87... to add another 100 to that, with no preo to the engine, wouldn't last very long aye? Am happy where it is !
HI Del, hate to say it but that smoke looks a heck of a lot like oil rather than over fueling. ID put a bet on turbo seals or valve guide seals. Iv had a couple of turbo charged bikes and my feeling would be turbine seals. Cracking nice bike all said and done. If you decide to sell message me id be interested.
Very cool vid brother.... thanks
Thanks Ron, happy with it now!
P. At least you can twist the right hand knowing that it is going to step in one piece, the owner must have loved his machine , all the best buddy 👍😎
He did indeed my friend, it's a long story and I have it all documented , he bought it new and spent a fortune on it, I've got bills totally more than the bike itself cost... makes me proud to own it, shame it had an owner between him and me who kinda let is go a bit, but will soon whip it back in to shape!
(P) Atleast you know it’s safe and more useable power 🏍 nice to see the toolbox in the background 👍🏻
Exactly that mate, safe and useable... more impressed with the torque figure, which I didn't mention, factory claims 67lbs ft, which you know means about 57 in real life, and this is making 100 at 6000rpm... so the word of the day is 'grunt' lol
Are they Hagon shocks you have on the xjr? As I'm thinking of fitting Hagon shocks on my 2002 non sp xjr1300 Yamaha. I have just seen I think they are yss?
Yes mate, they're YSS G-Series !
Like u said, it's fast and powerful enough to do a good drive jejeje! And it's still 131 hp on a 17 year old bike!!!! Fokking awsome!
It's like mine 2006 s4r monster and it's got 137 with the 996cc engine Im happy with that all day long!
Great vid really njoyd that!
Im waiting For the Next one Guy's
Are you sure the smoke was over fuelling, it looked a little bit like it had a blue tinge to it which would indicate oil especially on the over run , which is when a turbo tends to emit smoke when burning oil. As the bike hasn't seen very much use over the years the seal in the turbo can fail and allow this, excellent video though.
steven verhaegan - exactly that buddy, it's just a big chunky road bike with more power than you'd ever need on the road!
Gary McGhee - it would be buddy, a lot of it is soot, cos it's been pototled around town so much, and running 11.5:1 fueling you can even smell it sat in traffic, it's like it's on choke, but there is a blue tinge to it, am keeping an eye on it, it's under load, it's only on overrun, it's not expensive to have the blower re-built and if it needs it, it's well worth it, as it's a Garrett T25 hybrid turbo, and a lot of money these days to buy...
holy crap,i have the bike but I never knew this can handle a turbo, amazig stuff
Very much so, the venerable XJR1200 is a very popular bike for turbo charging, the motor is massively under-developed and has a great capacity to absorb extra power delivery without becoming fragile, basically it's one of the strongest engines on the road today in the air-cooled bracket.
@@Moonfleet41 just that mine is a xjr1300 from 2002 but I guess its mostly the same engine, anyways, who in UK would be able to perform the modification and installation of a turbo?
@@fs5866 There are still a few hard core engine tuning shops that could help... try TTS www.tts-performance.co.uk/ Take yer biggest wallet though.!!
Good vid again , how do you get on with them little mirrors ? I’m looking to change me standard ones .
Hi buddy, they are an Oberon product, and are actually pretty good cos they are quite convexed and once you set them up in exactly the right position and lock them with the allen key, you get a full clear view behind you, in fact, a view that overlaps, so I like them a lot !
Moonfleet41 cheers pal👍🏻
Huckleberry, haha, that's a famous movie line in America. You probably know the movie. Glad you found an acceptable answer to your initial disappointment.
(I'm ya Huckleberry... Doc Holiday, Gunfight at the OK Corall and Brad Pitt lol!)... thanks buddy, it was more enlightenment that dissapointment, happy now !
Only 131 bhp i wouldn't worry about it del still one quick mother and usable. Its like when you turbo a busa just to ride it on the road there's no point to it
hello how much would you cost such a turbo kit for xjr 1200?
Great amount of useable power there. IME that's a lot more fun than hitting the peak power band at 80 in first gear, legally speaking anyway. It also sounds terrific
Thanks Andy, it was a journey of discovery... I am so much happier with the bike than I was, now I know it was deliberately de-tuned to give it big bags of hefty grunt for meaningful street use... the numbers are so enlightening, it hits the peak torque of 100ftlbs at 6000revs, so when you need to overtake, even in 4th gear, once it hits 5k rev, just pin the throttle and it leaps forward...
Great video
The XJR was a nice watch doing the paint and stuff, now back to the streetfighter! :)
10/4!
It may not make the power you was hoping for but Oh my God does it sound nice
ha ha thanks buddy, it's all in the voice aye, and how could I be disappointed, 100ft lbs of torque at 6000k revs... ain't too shabby !
Hi Dell, just wondering do you not clean up & copper grease the spark plugs before you drop them back in?
Hey buddy... no real need, they weren't corroded, just a little sooty, and only been in there a few hundred miles.. more important to re-gap them and make sure they're all the same.. good to hear from you again, hope lifes good.. del.
130 plus hp to the wheel is a monster. I’d be happy with that
This was a while ago now Mike. i subsequently found the dump valve to be stuck open, venting boost..replaced it with a new one and it pulls way harder now. Once the weather clears up and the snow is gone im going back to Moorespeed for another dyno run.. the valve was stuck wide open, so i could hit 150+ this time.. its a heavy bike, i wouldn't call it a monster, but its so much fun to ride mate.
I just found your UA-cam channel and have been checking out your videos. Cool and informative by the way. I ride a 1995 Harley springer softail. Keep up the great videos. I really like the how to’s and the vid’s with guest
It had me thinking, how accurate is a Dyno ? As it's a rolling road and not pulling any weight or any wind resistance
(P) Late to the vids (have been away) but loved the results here:...
The fact that it's NOT about the biggest numbers possible on the sheet... It's about the best numbers for the bike's engine & for the way it's going to be used. The best of both worlds here... no risk of engine damage and the best power curve for actual real world riding!
Jealous just aint the word!
Thank you my friend, I can see you know your stuff, and you're dead right... it is very much safely under-tuned for it's potential and as I'm more than happy with the way it rides, I think I'll be leaving it that way for now...! It's making enough grunt to pull tree stumps out and that'll do for me.... cheers my friend...
It was really hard to tell you were happy, not. It looks a really smart looking bike, amazing condiition for its age. I like the bikes of that era and am so jealous of how easily you chopped the plugs.
Just a wee question, how can I tell if my bike is running lean without chopping the plugs? It's not running hot or lumpy, feels okay. There's a story behind it and I know you've a lot of friends to talk to but if you'd like the full picture then please say. I always appreciate your help.
Thanks for the F A B series, fair enjoyed it.
Great stuff as per...If you stuck stuck for a project however.. I just got hold of a 1995 st1100 pan..shaft drive obvs but make a great project =)
Thanks buddy, there's a whole list of bikes in my head, but there's always some reason they're not do-able, but the Pan has always been one of them, I've always felt they would make a really cool cruiser with that longitudinal V4 in it... especially if it was a rat style!
exactly how i saw it as well..well if you feel the urge mr_styx@hotmail.com
Get a dust cover from harley for the air filter, it will also stop it getting water logged in your lovely weather.
Good thinking that man, what a great idea !
i'd really consider finding that 180hp again, running 11.1 AFR isnt good for the engine. Upgrade the ignition system and run 8psi, you wont loose your down low power you'll only make more as you rev. Dont leave power on the table...Drag racer blood in me :P
Hello, okay, I saw in this video you changing the candles of this beauty of motorcycle! I wanted to ask you for advice or help, I recently changed the candles of Bandit 1200 97, they were simple NGK and I ended up putting it on Iridium, only that consequently they burned 2 out of nowhere, does it have any candle specifications for it ?!
Hi Eduardo, by 'candles' I presume you mean spark plugs?? There is absolutely no reason to fit iridium spark plugs in a Bandit, it's a pointless waste of time , that engine will never exploit them to any benefit, just stick with the regular NGK plugs at the recommended rating for the bike and they'll be fine !
Iridium plugs were originally formulated for much higher performance engines, so many people think there will be an obvious benefit, but think of it like this, you can put Nike trainers on your Grandma, but it won't make her run any faster!
Look, I do not know what to say !!! Thank you very much, because as I am still lay in this part, the staff here ends up saying that it is better option for this type of Plugs. Well, at least I know that if I burn another plug, I'll put the NGK.
I just have to thank you! Thank you so much!
Nice finishing touches. 👍 Bike looks Great Del. P.s i think you can get air filter covers, not sure how restrictive they are though.. 🍻
Hey Friz Bee, sure thing mate, little details, and a few more jobs to come over the winter, and someone else mentioned the covers, yes you can get them, Harley make them, or Screamin' Eagale, they call them a 'rain screen' and not only do they do what the name suggests, but also black in colour, so I think that may well be the solution !
I know the results for you were a little disappointing but you'll still have loads of fun on a fast, comfy bike, 180 bhp would of been lethal, enjoy it buddy, you deserve it, regards Stu.
Hey Stu, not disappointed, that was the initial feeling when I read the figure, but then I understood it had been de-tuned... it simply has 2lbs of boost dropped of it, and some bigger main jets to make it richer... this has tapped it down by 52bhp, but made it a really smooth, torquey bike to ride, and what's incredible is, that the torque figure hasn't dropped when it was de-tuned, it was making 100ftlbs of torque and 183bhp... now it's making 100ftlbs of torque and 131bhp, so the reduction in boost has just knocked off the top end rush, which makes it safe!
The bike is a bit on the heavy side for nearly 200 up. Speed produces a gyroscope effect doesnt it and it's a big ol beast so perhaps that would be one of the reasons for the detune maybe. Wot do I know Its probably nothing to do with it and it's my rambling brain lol. Nice to see you happy with it bruv. Ride safe
Cheers Bruv, it is a lardy old tug, proper old school bike weight, the de-tune was directly due to lowering the boost pressure in the blower, and increasing the fuel mixture to make it richer... but the weight of the vehicle bears noting on the power it produces...my coach makes 500hp, and it weight 16tonnes! lol !
hey delboy been loving ur work. and i was wondering if a very special bike came across, you would do a series of bringing it back to its glory ?
Hi Nic, that's an interesting comment... what kind of thing do you mean by a very special bike?? Do you mean something classic, or rare, or something unique?? ... and when you say, came across, do you mean, came available?? I love doing bikes up, so what exactly do you mean?? I have the fighter build on the bench at the moment, but there's always the next project ... tell us more about it??!
well classic and from what i understand rare as well. they look like 1960 250cc 2 stroke ariel arrows.(gold and white) and my friend has them stuck in a garage not being able to get them running, and i think it would be fantastic to get them running, getting a great series as well? and could become available.
Nice looking bike now it has turned out really well. My car only has 100 horse power and I pull caravan with that so it should go like shit off a shovel.
I'm very curious about the Torque figure , you didn't mentioned that ,
I have 2 XJR's 1 from 2000 fairly stock exept for the fairing and exhaust
And one from 2005 with 4' ignistion advancer , dynojet stage 1 , full scorpion exhaust , airbox modified , 36y inlets , K&N airfilter.
Making 118,5 NM and 120 BHP to the back wheel .
Hi Dennis, I thought I mentioned it in the chat at the end... it's making a peak torque of 100ft lbs at 6000revs, and looking at the graph it's an extremely flat torque curve, so it's actually making 85ft lbs at just 4000revs... so masses of mid-range grunt and that's running massive 130 main jets, fuel ratio is 11.5:1, so way rich for safety... it's only running 4psi of boost, now all that is all pretty low and lame, it has huge potential with some 120 main jets and 2 more psi of boost, it'll make about 150bhp t 8.5k and about 110-120ft lbs max. torque... and of course, upwards from there, 115 mains 0.5bar boost and I should be up around 180bhp, etc etc... you know how it is with turbos, the potential is endless ... if you balance the fuel correctly, once you get to 200bhp, start retarding the ignition maybe 3degrees, then once you get to 10psi then 225-250 is easy enough... but on an un-prepared engine running full compression, you'll break something in then end... I just love the fact that turbos are like a volume button, you can have whatever power you want, as long you you prepare everything correctly for it ... but where it is right now is where I want it, never mind the top bhp of 131, it's making 120bhp at th same time as it makes peak torque at 6k revs, which makes it a perfect street muscle bike... pulls ya arms out once it hits 5k and it's totally addicted... !
That's 131bhp at the wheel? Pretty good as most bikes in the claimed 125-130bhp range will give less at the wheel. How many owners put their bikes on a dyno anyway? Sounds pretty sweet as well. 131 bhp with corresponding high torque is more than enough on the roads. What is the mpg?
Hi Alex, I totally agree mate... yes, that is rear wheel power, or as it's usually described 'whp' (wheel horse power), and the torque is 100, so hard core and dead usable, I would rather have power I can use than silly numbers that I can't... and mpg across the board is about 20-25 so far, depends how you ride it! It is over fueling, which is probably making it worse...
It's humbling to think someone has spent a lot of money to make the bike feel safe on the road. It looks fantastic
Not really safe on the road buddy, safe in terms of not destroying itself... turbo power is infinite, you can keep winding up the boost until you melt the engine, or even if then you get the fueling bang on, and it doesn't melt... and you fit an intercooler, you're still gonna get to a point where you overcome the design strength of the internal components and you end up braking a con rod, or the crank... the statement on the invoice says that the fuel was set at 11.5:1 for safety due to standard ignition and compression, so I think they were trying to look after the engine more than anything else, and lowering the boost is the best way to do that.
Oh ok that makes sense. Thank you for that
Very very nice
finally... great!!
Tell you what tho Dell you still got one he'll of a bike , 130 pony's should still pull it along quite nicely.
should move it along
Oh too right Dave, there's so much hype around the top figure, which isn't actually that important compared to the mid-range and low down grunt, 100ft lbs of torque at 6000 rpm means a lot more to me - cheers !
That's looking minted mate, and what a cracking sound the ghost rider has lol, u still got them crash bobbins for the zxr mate. How are u and pitstop getting on anyway buddy ;)
Hi Tony, yes, I have the bobbins for you, and am not likely to get round to buying the new engine mount bolts any time soon, so as soon as I am back on the bike next week, it's the first job, am gonna pop something adequate in from me old bolt box, just temporary, and will whip them off for you... drop us an email with your address and will stick them in the post next week fellah, along with the mount bolts and spacers...how's that?!
take it to Bonniville have some fun
Texas mile..!
that to and if you and Miss Penny get stateside we gotta throw some miles down... i make a killer BBQ
Trust me, I'm pushing 125bhp on my KTM...and that's scary as it is. 131bhp? Yeah, that'll do!
Sure thing brother, and 100ft lbs of torque at 6000 revs, will pull tree stumps out...but I have weight as a disadvantage, your KTM weighs less they Kylie in her socks! See you in Cambridge in a couple of weeks buddy....
Is there a special reason for holding in the clutch when starting or is it just a habit?
Ivo Kanin I do it all the time, it's a habit I learned with starting a car, by disengaging the clutch you reduce drag for the starter motor, helps prolong your starter motor and draw on your battery.
It's a habit picked up from before bikes and cars for that matter did not have an inhibitor fitted to the clutch lever meaning the engine could be started when in gear. That's when your arse takes a bite out of the seat. "Chahoor".
(P) this remaining jobs looks like new interesting chapter of your channel. i wish you many nice miles with it
Thanks Morgan, looking forward to riding it before the winter closes in... cheers!
Enjoying the music what’s the 1st song/ music called
Thanks Nabaz, it's from a band called The Crandells, here's a link for you: www.reverbnation.com/chrisgregory
You need a tank protector with that belt you've got totally agree with your comments on the dyno results that standard engine wouldn't last long with the tune it had it a lot better to have power and torque low down for street use I always laugh at the car park queens with there hyper bikes their only good for the track and not many do that because of the fear of crashing it because your insurance wouldn't pay out
Del can you feel the turbo kick in then?
P.S loved your little gripe right at the end of the vid 130 lol.
Oh yes mate, you certainly can... at 2500-3000 revs, it's like a standard bike, it hits 3500 and then reaches cross over point at 4k, where the torque and the bhp are matched, then it just builds in a huge surge that just doesn't stop pulling... it's not a bang in the back , like a 2-stroke, just a constant urgent surge, like it's on steroids - awesome !
Just wondering when you change the colour does it cost anything to declare it to DVLA?
the v5 has to be changed, doesn’t it?
Yes it does, and nope it doesn't cost anything!
Moonfleet41 oh great am toying with trying to paint the fx650y
Moonfleet41 same way you did the black street fighter
Agreed, I will take torque on a road going motorbike over HP any day..
How cares,,,,,its a stunning bike, so sod the power :)
(P) That sound alone makes me want to buy it!!! And torque wins over HP any day of the week :-)
Cheer up del it’s still 131bhp frighteningly quick and a great looking bike but if it’s not to your liking anymore I’ll have it .... lol
Cheers buddy, I seem to be developing a bit of a queue of guys very happy to have it... maybe I should raffle it?! Fiver a ticket??
Definitely!!!
No don’t sale her del, she is miles of smiles every time you out!!!😜
What are the Torque figures that would be interesting to know (before and after) and for many they are more important than bhp. A lot of us prefer the acceleration over top speed, as most of our roads are no good for top speed runs. That's partly why I want to look for something like a GSR 600 over a sports bike, a bit less power but more torque across the rev range, beat the sports bikes all day in city and track riding.
Exactly right in every way my friend... it's always about the torque... if you look at the graph, it's making 100 ft lbs of torque at 600rpm... the factory claimed 67ft lbs in the brochure, and as with all brochure claims, that would have always been less in real life... so you could have practically almost doubled the pulling thrust, which is what's made it such a fun bike to ride on the road... in fact, interesting point, the XJR1200 engine was a de-tuned FJ12 engine, designed with softer cams, and a degree less timing advance to make it better to ride on the street...
That pretty amazing really, I think that's around 130 Nm witch is awesome. Can't wait to see you ride it.
Just goes to show numbers don't mean a lot other than bragging rights. 180BHP on a bike would be insane but probably not that great on the road. Even my zx6r has most of its power at the top end but 90% of my riding is commuting so I'll be lucky to hit 7-8000rpm most of the time. So ultimately a lot of the power goes to waste even with a 600 though it's nice to have for when you want to have a little play.
Looking forward to the Sealey video.
Exactly right buddy, it's more fun reading lower down the graph where the two readings are overlaid, the cross over point where torque and bhp is the same, is at 3500revs, and they both climb from there constantly, and it's making 100ftlbs of torque at 6000revs, and in 3rd gear it's just pulling your arms out... it's got so much grunt down low in the revs, it's more ride-able than even if it had 250bhp - you are right, big number don't mean a lot on the road!
Maybe it's because of the original Sarron paintscheme but, is it just me or does the bike play La Marseillaise at the very start of the video? :) Also, rather than recover the seat, see if you can pick up an early naughties 1300 one - much nicer.
Hi Mick, blimey great minds think alike, I had thought the exactly the same on the seat, the one with the panels moulded in to the cover... see that's why I love YT !
(P) A bit disappointing, but then immediately reassuring! The beast should be a great steed on the road, my friend...some good, proper power!
Exactly that buddy, real world power, and oddly, still making the same torque it did at 180bhp, so even though they lowered the boost, it didn't make any less grunt, which is why it's so much fun to ride I reckon !
nice... burn out power
Whatever became of this bike? Sold?
Sold !
I'm with you, I agree the bike is beautifully setup (and better as) a torquey muscle bike.
Too right buddy, it's actually very understandable that it ended up this way, cos the XJR was derived from the FJ12, which had 120bhp to the XJR's 97, they de-tuned the FJ motor for more mid-range torque, now it has 100ftlbs of grunt at 6000revs, so th dozy cams put in the XJR have helped to make that happen...
should add that as your intro sound :D
Exactly what I'm intending to do buddy, that and the start up cackle I've been using !
Would those pipes pass a MoT ?
Well it aint "defective" in such as it isn't leaking, and it doesn't have "Race Use Only" stamped on it.. so for MOT there is little more to satisfy.. it all depends on the tester on the day...it'll almost certainly raise an advisory for it being loud.. but then i get that on my Harley every year and it never fails.... so only time will tell mate, it's due in 10 months time..!
Thats why I got a 2 cylinder 1 litre bike and not a 4 cylinder 1 litre bike because I wanted that power low down on the road not for track.... Ive never been interested in speed I just want the acceleration
VlogBiker - good point buddy... twins always have more torque, and yours has got the best of both worlds, and awesome Italian chassis that is way better than the god awful contraption that the engine came from, the TL1000 was a fabulous engine in a homicidal frame and suspension, Cagiva really made that bike right... the XJR is now making 100ftlbs of torque at 6000revs, that's roughly almost double from the factory, and am dead happy with that...
Be more than enough power Del , a lot of people that mod the xjr go back to original after a while as it ruins the feel,
as a reference my 98 xjr1200sp still in Sarron colours runs at 100bhp 70ft-lbs torque.
Keep ur chin up
Blimey mate, that's running very sweet then.. they claim 67 torque and 97bhp, so you really have that right in the sweet spot, so few bikes deliver what they claim, let alone a few more on top... I know the Sarron SP was a pretty rare bike, and I did think twice about painting it, but when I phoned Mackie he convinved me lol !... and yeah, 100 torque and 130 brake, happy with that, it can outride the forks all day long !
Moonfleet41 Done a few small mods, dynajet stage 1, ignition advanced and so on but only having 3000 miles on the clock dose help lol
I thought it sounded flat!
and what's in the box on the left counter????
haha, it's the big Xmas prize draw, check the video at the weekend!
There's always some idiot who has to make some stupid comment about things they know nothing about. My self and my boys love watching and learning from Del ...if your really dislike what your seeing stop watching and troll someone else.
Just a beautiful bike man. Love it and the channel!
Thanks buddy, much appreciated !
