    Always a pleasure to see good, old fashioned engineering and proper use of tools. With age comes patience. 20 years ago you might of ridden that bike without attending to all those little, yet essential jobs.

      You know me so well mate, I remember breaking a chain at 17 due to nothing more than absolute neglect, tanking down a dual carriageway on my RD250 and I thought I'd slipped it between two gears as a I changed, all the chain did, thankfully, was disappear up the carriageway behind me, could have been so much worse

    Morning all, I used one of your detailed videos to help me change my chain and sprockets yesterday, really glad to have it to follow, I purchased a cheap £12 chain splitter set from eBay and just took my time following your video. The quality of the breaker set is adequate but like you said, don't go forcing anything and it worked just fine. It took me about an hour and a half but I have a single sided swing arm so no need to remove the wheel. Thanks for your helpful videos, I seem to be able to find something that you have covered when I need to do something to my bike.

      Hi Andy, we sol love to hear when people have got involved with their own stuff - good find with the chain splitter, the only reason that those spreader pins get broken is cos people lean on them too hard, you only need to spread that chain pin link by 0.1mm, which isn't even visible... you may find that the end of that pin flares out, so in effect, spreads itself, just like the chain link, but they are soft, so it's fine to take a small file and just take the burr off the end the next time you want to use it !

    Hi Del and Pen, this is by no means a reflection or judgment of the music you've used in the past, but I definitely prefer watching these types of videos without music. There's something very calming watching you at work with only the sounds of the tools against the motorcycle.

      Thank you Dai, hands up, this was a little experiment, just to gauge feedback on a 'tech' video with no music... we felt that background music wasn't really needed, so gave it a spin, and judging by the hug amount of positive feedback, it seems this is the right way to go!

    Not commented before but felt that I should. I have also seen the detractors videos and I cannot work out why they are getting soo angry. It would be knocking me back but I hope that it is not affecting you two too much. I have been watching your channel for ages and love your stuff. You have inspired me so much that I have started repairing my bike and actually bought another one as a project. Yours are the videos I will refer to when I am not sure what I am doing. Your detractors channels have also got merit but I just wish they would just chill and let people do what they do. Thanks for all your hard work

      Hi Jonny, thank you for making a comment, that's very kind of you, it takes a lot to put together a kind, and generous, message like that... and no, my friend, not knocking us back one little bit, it's important to remember that YT is not social media, it's a private company, and you post your videos under their terms and their rules, it's a place for people to create content others can enjoy, and yes, it would appear, that for some individuals the only 'content' they are able to produce is the defamation of other peoples content, kinda pitiful really when you think about it... but YT are watching, and they are already beginning to make moves to smarten up the overall appearance of YT, there are harsher punishments for those who break the rules, and bigger hills to climb now for those who want to benefit, financially, from YT... in the end the only way to succeed at doing this is to mind your own business and continue to work hard, creating interesting content for people to enjoy, content that hurts no-one, but is just there on it's own merit. We are continuing with 'business as usual' and there will always be parasites who feed off the back of the genuine creators, so we just have to weather them and keep going, whilst keeping an eye on the western front ...     My favourite chain and sprocket change so far was on my SV ~2 years ago - turns out the last twit to fit the front sprocket decided it needed lots of red loctite! Found a receipt and it was actually a well established bike garage that had done it!!

      Sadly, this is a by-product of two things, the claim n' blame culture we live in, and customers immediately trying to extract money from any situation where they feel that the dealer is wrong... I know it sounds like I'm sticking up for them, but I have worked in that environment, and one small mistake, such as maybe leaving a bolt loose, whilst yes, it's terribly serious and could cost a life, if it's tabbed over properly, it's unlikely to come off, and some customers finding this kind of thing, don't go back to the dealer and complain, they go straight to social media and that can destroy a shop's reputation... and ruin their business, I've seen this so many times, people would rather brag on social media about something, than actually talk to the shop, understand what went wrong and get it dealt with, so as a protective measure, shops take steps to cover themselves, and that's exactly the kind of thing they do, a common one is masively over-torque-ing wheel axle nuts, so they don't come undone, but either way, if you do these things yourself, you know it's done right aye?!!

      Moonfleet41 Yeah, completely understand it was them covering their own arse, but they could have at least used the blue stuff! ;) I think people now complain on social media because they're fed up of crappy companies that don't deal with your issue UNTIL their reputation is at stake... Which isn't fair on the majority that have decent customer service, but like most things, it's the few bad ones that ruin it for the rest

    I ride a BMW with shaft drive and yet I have watched both the long version and this version of the chain and sprockets video! Almost makes me want to buy another bike just so I can do the job! (Not sure that my wife would agree). Good work as always, keep it up.

    With you all the way, mate. Don't know much about what's been going down, but I have noticed that there are some detractors out there. I choose to ignore it all and just enjoy the channel as much as ever. Just crack on and do what you do. I suppose with the success of the channel (let's face it, you're hardly invisible) the nature of the beast is the backlash brigade. Fuck 'em. Today's video, yes you've done this before. The DID chain and sprockets on the Scrambler for Penny was great, I watched it again the other day. But I still enjoyed today's iteration, because it showed you just getting on with it. I also liked it without the music, but II enjoy the clatter of tools!!
    Really looking forward to seeing Marie's visit!

    I generally sit or stand on the bike and use an extension bar on the front sprocket. Always worked for me so far. Another great video Del!

      Now why didn't I think of that... that way you could even use the front brake as well... now that's why I like YT the most - shared knowledge is always more powerful !

    Great job, plenty to learn from, the one thing I do not like about these underslung brakes is, when you stop the bike if it has been raining, or the road was dirty, all that shit runs down the disc and into your pads, there is always the chance of picking up small stones.

    Another quality vid Del with good advice for both beginner and intermediate biker mechanic enthusiasts. I recently changed mine as you will recall, using a previous vid of yours on the topic.       Hey buddy, everybody's worst nightmare aye... I do believe, tbh, that chain manufacturers could develop something a little more specific that today's rivet links, they are perfectly safe, if done correctly, but the problem is "correctly" is a very narrower margin, if you wind the tool in too hard you'll break it, not enough and, well you found that out. Back in the day the very first rivet links were often called a 'soft link' because you literally hammered the pins over in to a mushroom, which felt much more secure, but they weren't strong and it was easy to end up hammering the plates too tight... either way, glad you're ok, and thanks for your kind support !

    Great video as always! This is a conversion im doing to my bike although i only have a rs4 125 my local garage has recommended a 520 chain instead of the 428 thats on it now. Big thank you to yourself and penny.

      Hi Geoff, OK, to understand chains a little, and bear with me, it's a bit nerdy ! The chain they are recommending has got longer links, so less prone to stretch, but they are a little bit thinner, and so are the sprockets, meaning not so much friction, so the bike will be a little smoother, and possibly even a little better changing gear, so basically the way it works, is the 3-figure number (428) is split in to two measurements, the '4' is the lenght of the links and the '28' is the width (or thickness) of the rollers from side to side, so with the 520, the '5' means a slightly longer link than the 4, but the '20' means slimmer, or skinnier, chain - it's good advice, and should make your bike nicer to ride, and don't worry, a 520 is more than strong enough, even for a 250 or bigger.. in fact, you could even run a 400 on that and it would be ok... all the best, Del

      Moonfleet41 great advice del and matches what i have been told by my mecanic as he says the standard chains are really prone to "stretch" and means more adjustments in the rear wheel alignment plus the standard chains tend to snap as i know from personal experience haha thanks again del and cant wait for the speedfighter build to finish and finally get to see the finished achievement.     I see you do the rear axel to 140nm but in the Haynes it states 150nm did you get the setting from a Yamaha manual or another source as when doing my chain and sprocket did mine to the 150nm and a bit concerned now that it may be a mis print. Thanks (Also a 1200 Sarron but no turbo 😞)

    Hi Del & Penny, that was a cracking vid! Very informative and I did find the lack of music different dare I say even better? I find background music in the workshop ok when doing things I have done before, but when learning a new skill music can be a bit off putting. Was going to an open day at a friends shop and could not decide to take the car or bike.......XJR it is then!
    Looking forward to seeing this Beast on the road! You have my support all the way!

Just what I would have done... and thanks for the great feedback on the music, we actually did it deliberately and have done it a couple of times now for that reason, just to gauge reaction, you always kinda think that the video needs some nice moody background music during the non-talking bits, so viewers don't get bored, but it seems, not so ! The general feedback across the board has been positive, so whilst we may use a little music now and again, and always an intro, and outro, we'll keep it to a minimum, if at all... !

    Have you talked about the difference between o-ring chains and non o-ring chains? What are the advantage/disadvantages? Is one better over the other for a 96 bandit 600? Thanks!

      Hi buddy, I think the link you're referring to we used to call a clip link, or spring link, but no, you don't have that option with this one... this is a dedicated rivet link, and can only be riveted in the way I did it, you can buy the spring links for much smaller bike chains, but not bigger machines like this! Glad you enjoy the videos - much appreciated !

      No plans at the moment buddy, as not leaking, and wanna get everything up and running first, it's September already, and had no fun on the bike yet (other than spending money on it lol !) but during the winter, there will be a few jobs and one I wanna show is how to replace the fork oil without taking the forks out, or even removing a single part! I just need to play on the bike a bit before the salt goes down lol !

    I change the sprockets and chains myself, I've never taken the job to a mechanic to do it because of one reason and that is that I fear if he rushes it and and the pins are not spread right (too tight or too loose) that the chain may come off and rip my leg off in the process. Being a motorbike courier I use chain wax and not chain lube as I find it handles the weather better and the chains and sprockets last much longer, but thankfully we dont have to contend with salt on the roads as it doesnt snow in Sydney Australia.

      Hi mate, good call on the wax, it's always the right solution for the winter, rust is always there, with or without, the salt - and as a courier ride, you have my respect Sir, that's a hard job that most bikers couldn't handle especially through a wet week int he winter aye?? (specially a British winter lol!)

      Ive seen the British Winter first hand, been there 8 times... lol, twice through winter, the snow well thats where I draw the line... but yes here in Australia it just gets wet, rarely does the temperature reach freezing point. I rate my wet weather gear to how many hours riding in the rain, nothing is water proof (unless it doesnt breathe but then you still get wet with sweat) So Ive almost doubled up on all my gear. My Chain gets checked, lubed and sometimes even cleaned as well every Friday night, I also check my sintered pads and discs, Ive uploaded a video showing me doing a job during peak traffic (its the latest video on my channel)

    Hi Del, thanks for the advice, problem solved. Took hose off at caliper, all good. So took nipple out and it was blocked at the small hole at the bottom. Cleaned and re-fitted. Bled brakes. Now all good............Many many thanks. Could you do a video about common xjr upgrades. XJR forums go on about air box mod (triming snorkel) air intake 36y's and 4 degree ingnition advancer. Are anyworth it? ................thanks again Paul

    Do you need to take those rear brake caliper out every time you take the wheels out? I have the same set up as your bike with the link bar. What will happen if you don't?

      Hi buddy, no you don't have to drop the caliper off, but it's a bit more of a faff to lift the back wheel out when the disc is clamped between the pads and it's even more fun getting back in, but to be truthful, provided the caliper is not on the back of the disc, no, you can indeed leave it in place, no problem.... in fact, for what it's worth, on the late model Harley Sportsters, you have no choice, you actually have to take the wheel out itself to get the caliper off... the only issue with the XJR though is that wrestling and yanking the wheel out can often chip the paint on the wheel cos the caliper body sits just inside the width of the rim, so if anything else, it's just safer for the paint !     Please Del, I'm stuck with brake issue on my XJR 1300. Right side disc gets real hot while left is cool. So took pistons out cleaned and put back. Left side bled easily. Right side won't bleed. No air, no fluid. Put vacum bleeder on still nothing, no drop in pressure. So something is blocked or mis- aligned but what? look forward to hearing your thoughts. Paul.

      Hi Paul, just to be clear .... you've sorted the stuck piston that was causing the heat?? And the issue is it won't bleed up right?? Sometimes, twin systems can be a real pain, if it's a two pipes from a t-piece job, like normal, then that's always gonna be hard to bleed...
      There's a couple of options mate, the cheap option is to reverse bleed it - you need about 2" of tight fitting plastic hose that will go over the bleed nipple, shove a hypodermic you get from the chemist in to that piece of hose filled with brake fluid and force it in from the bottom... if you hold the brake lever in, it opens the valve and let the air bubble up through...
      The other option, and the way I would go, is to re-plumb the system. Two ways you can do this... run two equal hoses on a double banjo from the master cylinder to each caliper, or better still, run a piggy back system... that's one hose from master to right caliper, piggy back off the right caliper and loop over the mudguard to the left caliper... some Triumphs have this as standard, it's the easiest ever to bleed, you bleed the right one first, once it's bled up, shut the valve, open the left nipple and keep pumping, and it will push past the right caliper and push the air on to the left caliper, so you get a solid bleed every time...... couple of options there for you mate, let us know how you get on !

    Can always learn alot from watching. Even when you don't have the same bike. e.g. when i change sprockets I always left it in gear or loosened it while the bike was on the ground, but clamping the brake is a great idea. less unnecessary strain through the gearbox I suppose.
    shame to hear about this "other stuff" 😔

    Nice job del. Only thing I have ever seen you do that made me flinch was putting the wheel down on the disc. Please pop it on two wooden pieces of wood with the tyre. Takes a lot to warp a disc but you can if you are not careful. JT rear on my bandit but had to get a Suzuki front with the cush drive rubber. Keep up the good work. Rob

      Yes Del, i noticed their logo. They no longer make a "Rubber" one for my K4 Bandit. It does make a difference in the transmission both noise and smoothness. The skills our generation learned need to be passed on and you have found a perfect way to do it. Next time you are going to Squires will have to get down to have a chat.

    (P) Excellent timing again Del, I just bought a new chain and sprockets for my Blackbird and the video is an excellent reminder of best practice, reminders and general useful knowledge, love it. Must go and get a guage though as I did the last one by eye. Just wish I had the space and money for a lift like that, instead of grubbing around on the driveway :)
    I don't normally read the comments as I watch most of the videos on the PS4 (which doesn't have them) so not really sure what all the 'trouble' was but I hope you can both just ignore the usual trolls and imbeciles of the world and carry on producing your excellent chanel. Even if someone doesn't agree with you I never understand how they think that entitles them to be obnoxious and mean (bravery through anonymity).
    I (and it seems 99.9% of people) always enjoy your videos and I really, really appreciate how much time and effort you both put into it.

      If I'm honest buddy, that's the best way to do it, I just wanted to demonstrate how the riveter works in case someone wants to use it that way ... actually, you can even the chain with a hacksaw, which is what I only ever used to do back in the day !

    Thank you again for a such an informative video. I have questions. First, those blue footpegs. I like the style. How do you find them as compared to rubber padded ones? I find the one on my ZX highly annoying as my boot soles keep catching on the rubber every time I move my feet, which I do a lot.
    Also, after watching a few of your sprocket and chain videos, finally bit the bullet and changed the sprockets, chain, cush drive, sprocket carrier bearing, wheel bearings and brake pads (refurbishing rear caliper tomorrow because I noticed the rubber seal around the piston is coming out in bits (!!). The first lesson I learned, I will invest in an inner bearing puller for the next time I need to change bearings. I could not drift those wheel bearings out for love nor money and had to bring the wheel to my local mechanic (15 minute job for him...meh).
    For riveting the chain, I got sent Afam's own chain riveter. It was a bit fiddly but we got there in the end (fingers crossed).
    Next question. I went one tooth down in the front, 1 tooth up in the rear sprocket. I've noticed two things, it accelerates like the clappers but I don't know if I can trust the speedometer over speeds of 75 mph. Judging purely by the daily commute and other traffic, it feels like speedometer is showing a higher speed than I am actually going at. Thoughts? I downloaded a (free) GPS speed app and it is saying my top speed on my route was 90 mph when my speedo was showing 110 over a certain stretch. (Don't judge me). So, when you have a spare moment, I'd love some input. Really nice job on the metal scoring on the Foxdawg. :) I hope you have a great weekend! Best wishes to the both of you. Hugs from Essex! :)

      Hi Patricia, hope you're well... with the blue pegs, they simply came with the bike and weren't my choice, they are convenient if you wanna small peg, and initially we used them on Penny's bike because the large fat rubber pegs were catching her jeans when moving the bike around, and they also stuck out too far, they're fine, I've never given them a thought, never slipped off one!
      And with your gear reduction, you've gone quite a long way there, one down on the front =3 up on the rear (obviously it's a 3 to 1 ratio, with 45 x 15 sprocket sets), so you're a total of 4 up on the rear, the general accepted change is to go 1 down on the front only, and that will freshen up the acceleration a little but leave you a modicom of cruising speed, if you want an even more subtle change than that, then 1 down front and 1 DOWN rear, actually just puts you 1 up on the rear... if you're still with me lol... but whatever way you achieve it you've gone for practically an off road set up... 4 up on the rear is pretty huge and your speedo will definitely be out... there's nothing you can do about it as it drives off the sprocket, but over reading is fine cos it'll always keep you under the speed limits... maybe if you want to be exact, check out your GPS at 30, 50 and 70 and mark a tippex dot on your speedo glass at that point, just for speed cameras if nothing else!

      Thank you for that. I was looking at a gearing table before I changed everything (sprocket and chain was actually knackered anyway) but the ramifications for the speedo didn't actually sink in. Jösses sometimes I'm thick. Well, can't afford another new sprocket at this point so I'll just run with it. Ahwell, experience is a good a teacher as any. And yes, what you said makes total sense.       @@patsonabike You can buy a front sprocket for little more than a tenner Patricia and that'll put you back almost to standard with only the 1 up on the rear remaining and should be still a little fresher than standard but your speedo will be almost bang on!

      matt pigott sorry to but in but I have back problems as well and I tried a soft tail (fatboy ) not the way to go. Not enough suspension movement. If your buying used look at the dyna range much better suspension in my opinion. If new the 2018 models are all using a brand new frame with mono shock suspension. Either way go book some test rides.

      Hi Matt, what Edward said is exactly right - the Softail is a little bit deceptive with it's name - it's actually not that 'soft' at all! The two fat shocks that live under the frame give no more than 1.1/2" of travel at best, and they slam over potholes... one of the reasons I changed to my Switchback (amongst other things!) was the Dyna shocks - when a spring is upright and almost 1ft long, it is always gonna give a more comfortable ride than a 4" long shock that's laying down flat.
      Also, you mentioned the RoadKing - well, the weary ones of those have air shocks that you can pump up and let down, as needed, so you can even fine tune them to how you want them... and many customises use RoadKing shocks for the cool look and their adjustability, so try the RoadKing, or in fact like Edward said, test ride lots of Harleys, and I think you'll find just the one for you... Enjoy shopping !

Proper billet blocks and really accurate, why can't they put this kinda stuff on Harleys aye lol - PS, did 670 miles on the Switchback this weekend (Stormin' the Castle rally) and the last 200miles in pouring rain, so I know how you felt going home from the interview... :-(

      Good question, did post it up buddy, maybe you didn't catch it - the recommended ssetting is actually 150Nm, which I've always believed is far too much - the possibility is always there to crush the bearing cups, so I always torque to about 140Nm, or a little less, remember it's a lock nut anyway, and you can always marker paint it if you're worried and keep an eye on it !

      Hi buddy, well this was an odd one - was told by the last owner that it had an 18 tooth front sprocket, which would have up-geared the final drive, but when I took it off, as you saw, it was knackered, it was a 17 tooth! Not only that, but it was the factory original sprocket, proving that it's a genuine 15k miles bike, but I simply do not know why sellers of bikes tell these stories! I mean it's not like you're not gonna find out is it lol ... so in the end, it turns out it was original factory spec final drive, and it still is, ie., 17/38... all I've done though, is up-grade the width to 530, so it's a bit stronger, and should last longer too!

      Yeah, a few years ago I had a Turbo Busa, but because of so much power I ended up changing the gearing myself.. So when I saw the sprocket I thought it was a little shallow.. I'm finding out now that anything that's geared for top end isn't worth it in the UK..
      But like you, I've had some sellers in the past totally fabricate a story about what they've done to a bike.. Sad

    Penny's old bike, Triumph Bonnie, did it start to wobble a little at 160 miles per hour? Is this normal for this type of bike or does that indicate my bile has a problem?

      Blimey Walt.. i think the only thing that would wobble at 160 in a Bonneville would be my bottle..... i dont even think they do that speed unless you push them out of a Hercules..!

      Ok, i thought you might mean Kph.. so 100mph then... ? Ok, well thats certainly right up on the very ragged edge, they aint built for any more than that buddy, and yes, at that lofty speed all the small imperfections will manifest themselves in a scary ride.. poor suspension, average tyres, bad riding position for that fast.. etc etc... but you can improve things a lot with some better shocks, better tyres, top quality chain and sprockets, etc etc.. but TBH, ist a Bonneville, and any more then about 85mph, its just way out of its comfort zone...
      Yo may have a specific problem of course, so why not go through the obvious things, tyre pressures, what are they like (good condition), suspension setting, how much weight is the bike hauling (are you a big guy ahem)..chain tension, headstock bearings (maybe worn on a high mile bike etc)..... lots to look at, and also, is this 'wobble' in a slight curve or slow long turn in the road.. or on a straight road..?

      It was at 160 kph. My friend my bike was not meant for that speed. I thought I would check with you since you have a lot of knowledge when it comes to bikes. Thanks for the information. AT 140 kph Sabrina seems okay, but she is content and at her best at 4 rpms at 110-120 kph.

    Hi Del , I watch your channel out of interest and on the whole think its quite good , but dont understand why sometimes you say some of the things you say . e.g in this video you told us obviously that the back brake is on the opp. side to the chain and sprockets . well I have triumph and so do you ( well Penny does ) and its not her first and the back brack is on the same side as the chain and sprockets . so why tell us they are obviously on the opp. side ? all bikes are different .

      Hi Peter, yep, didn't explain that properly did I?? Some chains are on the right, of course, and what I was talking about was that the brake disc is one side the bike and the chain is the other, and every time I seem to do a chain it's on the left, but hands up mate, yep, did not explain that right !

      Jayden Valentine I'm a feminist :) and I love Delboy's videos. Shame about detractors, I tried to watch a bit of their videos but it was too... Just petty really. Criticism and critical thought are valuable, but there was way too much personal attack too from what I saw, and the comments on those videos from jealous blokes who wish they were Delboy but aren't because they don't have any charisma or personality! Ah well. Can't please them all.

      Devin - yeah, shame aye... but I guess it comes with the territory, at least now You Tube themselves are taking steps against things like this, they've already started cracking down on trollers and putting in place new rules to protect creators, which I guess is their meal ticket because they've finally realised that the advertisers out there want to use YT creators and they're not gonna pay for it if it's full of vitriol and hate, either way, we're business as usual, and taking caring car of business, thank you for your support....D&Px
