    I've always dreamt of having a 79 series and Jan this year I bought one, worked very hard, saved hard and happily handed over the cash. I've never been happier with a truck/vehicle. Everytime I jump in and I hear that V8 I smile. Offroad, well, from the showroom, I wore in the engine a little bit and went straight to the vic high country, and you are right Ross, it felt like it was home again haha. They are iconic Aussie vehicles, absolute characters!! Great having a review on these from an actual user of these vehicles instead of misinformed reviews from other channels/people..

      You'd have to be stupid to daily a 70 series all year in the snow belt and pretty silly to daily one in America if you drive a typical number of miles. Having owned three other SUV's from the 1980's I can tell you they suck on the Interstate!

    Great review Jono, I sold many a troopy back in the early 2000's and the customers would always question the red dust behind the dash binnacle. We never disclosed the vehicles used to be ex mining owned, instead saying they lived in the outback so you won't have to worry about rust, they sold like hotcakes! I'm not entirely proud to say that!

    Dad had a 79 series for 20 years that he bought second hand, in those 20 years he dropped 2 fully grown gum trees on it and hit many roos. But it never once failed him and only sold it this year to an 18 year old to live on a new life.

    Sold in New Zealand too, dude.high country farm staple and in construction some govt departments here use them as well. Even though they are introducing another tax next year and EV subsidies again while we had power outages this winter and import more coal in history for power supply, backwards, you nailed it, it’s not type of cars the issue it’s the fact we have too many, esp SUVs and a culture of everyone driving individually we when used to do things together eg friends or family, now everyone travels separately.
    Another reason you don’t get it, is you hit it on the head comfort interior, most Americans don’t want utilitarian they want BMW Mercedes quality and comfort inside with 50 cup holders Apple car play AA, butt scratchers, iPad screens in ever orifice, rest of the world understands a vehicle use we don’t want every vehicle to be the same things and expect it to do different jobs, we use the right tool for the right job, We wouldn’t have the 70series today if this was supplied to America, you would have demanded it become a soft SUV with your American must have creature comforts.
    Over time that’s just what Americans do, make everything same same, you destroy what appeals to you by making it into what you didn’t have before.
    Love live the true Landcrusier, you guys keep you Lexus’s and GWagons.
    They are overpriced, it’s returned and ROI decades ago.
    Nice tasteful mods on this Troopy. Tune and exhaust nothing so sounds better than that VDJ V8. 🤘

    The V8 exists for two things: low down grunt and towing. That’s exactly what this vehicle needs. The new 2.8 four is now available it’s quicker and more efficient but lags in towing, but the auto makes it very comfortable to drive. Both are great choices. Just make sure you never buy a Ford 4WD.

  • @Seiskid
    @Seiskid 2 роки тому

    Quite a handful at speed, especially as they age, and hard to put up with in heavy traffic, off road like you say its totally in its element and I wouldn't have anything else. Other 4wds are more refined. But this one is DEPENDABLE. If you really have to get somewhere rugged and get back and you absolutely require the car to start and go no matter what this is the vehicle. There's a reason you see these up crooked mountain tracks or in the outback. They don't break easily. Not at all.

    Hey mate they haven’t changed a lot since the 80s however they have had a range of different straight 6 engines both diesel and petrol in the 75 series even the early 79s had the straight 6 these where the hdj79s or 78 76 and the vdj is the v8 they’re a pretty awesome looking and sounding car however not the most capable thing in the world being leaf sprung and well over 2 ton with out any extras not to mention the fact that the rear axel is 100 mm shorter than the front because when the shoved the v8 in they had to make the front axle 100 mm wider and were to lazy to do the same to the rear this causes it to jump in and out of wheel ruts also makes them pretty unstable not worth the money buy a hilux

Leaf spring keepers would virtually hit and knock on everything, the rear track was a pain in the arse in the sand not to mention looked like it was crab walking down the road... The 5 speed GB sucks at 110km's hour, needs a 6th gear which the new ones received.... but with all the short comings it was still a wicked 4wd. would have been the ultimate 4wd if it came standard with coils all round / 6 speed gearbox and more than 2 piss weak little speakers..... :)

      Part of the attraction is the fact that as they are so basic there are a million ways to customise them. I think you’d see some specialists shops getting the basic models and tarting them up. I fully agree though, they are basically a tractor when you get a new one - although mine has the ‘luxury’ walnut look plastic on the steering wheel and dash :) My aerial is manual! The basic model you can get hold of in the UAE comes with… An AM only radio - it doesn’t even have FM!
