      And considering they're manual only and the US is so auto-only that we see repeat videos of carjackers trying to steal manual cars, getting stumped when they realize they can't drive it and running off.
      Anyway, the 200 series only sold, what, 3k units last year? It's financially not worth engineering an auto only 70 series that meets all the safety and emissions criteria just for you. Just like it's not worth Ford/Dodge/Chevrolet's time to engineer factory RHD versions of their trucks just for Australia.

      Big LC the reason that only 3k units sold has more to do with the fact that new models cost nearly 90k.... you don’t have many people who can go drop that kind of coin. That’s also why the secondary market for 100 AND 200 Series is so crazy hot right now. People really want LC’s but they can’t afford new ones

    They're an absolute beast mate. I bought a brand new 79 series dual cab GXL December '18. Literally nothing stops it. And if it does, engage either rear or both diff locks and just walk out. Beautiful to drive and i totally agree it's a real driver's car. You feel the road. Thanks for a great video on the cruiser.

    It's sad that old school vehicles like this are being banished from production. I mean there are still people that don't want the smoothed over plastic fantastic look, the constant bonging chime to tell you your door is open or key is in the ignition, self parking function, lane departure guidance, collision avoidance technology, traction control, etc, etc.
    All some people want is a no frills truck with a half descent engine and transmission with two solid axles that does not shit a brick the first time you load it up.

    • @xnova5
      @xnova5 5 років тому +4

      I think the problem is that not enough people want them, at least here in the U.S.
      not a jeep fan myself but im glad that we still have at least one truck with solid axles front and rear that is still being sold new.

      @GdaySport 5 років тому +4

      @@paulsouth4794 I can understand how it feels like they should be given they are "basic" , but plastic is cheap, and these "safety" gismos are also cheap, but strong engine and bullet proof drive trains are made of more expensive materials and in fairly significant quantity and need to be properly engineered. Its not something you can pop out of a plastic mould every 10 seconds like what makes up most modern cars nowadays.

    • @philg2468
      @philg2468 5 років тому +4

      Yeah, won't be killed off which is why Toyota Australia invested heavily to get the 79series up to 5star ANCAP (for mining and Govt), and added the DPF etc to make it Euro5 on emissions. Disappointing that the Troopie and Dual cab and 76 are not the same 5star Ancap, but historically they are a safe vehicle through sheer mass and front airbags.

    • @longdongjohn6588
      @longdongjohn6588 5 років тому +10

      I can see this lasting until 2025-2030. Look at all the changes they've made essentially just for the Australian market:
      - The facelift and front axle widening in 2008 to fit the Euro-4 compliant V8 (and the fact they still haven't fitted a matching wider rear axle
      - The 2010 dash upgrade to fit dual airbags
      - The 2013 installation of ABS with a unique program for the 70 series
      - 2016's Euro 5 updates and redesign of the 5 speed transmission.
      - 2016's Safety upgrades, fitting traction control and ESP with a unique program for the 70 series
      - The addition of curtain airbags and additional chassis reinforcement in the single cab ute to score a 5 star ANCAP rating.
      - The restyling of the bonnet for the dual benefits of increased airflow to the intercooler and better pedestrian impact protection.
      It's clearly worth their while to keep it selling here as long as possible. I can't see a full replacement coming until they're forced to electrify it. It's Toyota we're talking about here. They're the epitome of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

    I enjoyed your review, but the steering is like that because it is recirculating ball (old school) not rack and pinion. So you don't get steering rack failures.
    Secondly, best not to tell people to engage 4wd on bitumen because this vehicle has a fully locking centre diff which locks as soon as you pull the transfer lever into H4.

      Lachlan Tresham if you can refer me to another vehicle of similar capability and practicality that's not a Land Rover I will consider. For what I'm looking at, the 78 is the only rig I can consider. I need a large vehicle that I will use overland for driving around Australia then take to South Asia, up to Russia, across to the UK, round Europe and into the Middle East before heading back to Asia and then Australia. I will live out of the rig with a roof top conversion and do plenty of tracks the standard road travellers van can cannot. The troopy is the best option and nothing from my research comes close apart from a Land Rover which I'm not willing to learn to work with the engine as Toyota is more common and if any major issues come up, most mechanics around the world can work with a Toyota engine over a Land Rover engine.
      If you have any ideas of a rig that can compete with the practicality then please let me know. But until then, troopy is the way to go, and I want brand new as I will clock over 150k+ kms on my first tour before I go to North America then South America after I return adding another 150k+ kms to the clock. Toyota engine is good for longevity and reliability with good power and the size is what I need to live out of for all weather I will face..
      Also to add, I have no major limitations of costs for modifications to the extent of 50ish grand.
      Diff correction, portals, clutch, engine/turbo work, suspension, wheels/tyres, electrics, roof conversion etc
      Plus a trailer to carry my quad and extra equipment.
      And still I think 80k is fair price for what you get. Not many other brands offer luxuries like lockers and a v8.... In Australia, other than Land Rover.
      Thanks👍🏻

      @@riamriam6758 See the thing is if you put a rooftop tent on top of your trooper it won't help fuel economy and it makes it more top heavy. I don't hate the troopy I just think you could find something better to do it in Like a Dodge Ram 1500 for 80k.

      Lachlan Tresham it's a ute tho. If I needed a ute I would go for a 79, ranger, or navara. People only go for troopy for the body style. And a Dodge Ram is worse for fuel economy than a troopy. Fuel and fuel prices is not an issue. Plus you can live inside a troopy and not a ram. Only choices I have really are defender with no back seats, 4x4 hiace. I'm not going for a ute because the weight and practicality of a canopy is no where near the benefits of the troopy with a roof top tent. I see where your coming from with the ram being a good vehicle and slowly taking over Aus but in this case the troopy still holds is value in the market of being "one of a kind" in the 4wheeling market, especially for the extreme Overlanding scene. Most Aussie overlanders who to offshore option for troop carriers because nothing can compete unless your wel up to date with modern Land Rover engines, which is slim to none. Toyota is far easier to deal with and work on compared to anything else in this class of vehicle and like I say, only a 4x4 hiace would be viable for consideration, just the off-road capabilities you cannot compare to the troopy...
      Appreciate the input though!! Anything helps.. Iv got 2 years before I leave so plenty of time to decide before I need a good year for modifications to be done.

    Being sensitized is truly real phenomenon in modern cars. It feels like you get into a mini vacuum chamber which isolate you so much that you numb to reality and do not interact with outside event as much as when wind is blowing stronger, so that you can predict what to do when you get to the destination or how engaging the environment is and so forth of reality nature. Another side to modern cars is that, because of safety, the belt line is required to be up in some threshold of sight but when you sit in vehicle which is already so tall and your windows are in your-waistline, it is enjoyable to have niceties actually - from old days of sun shade without active shading materials, due to windows overall down-low.

    • @antonhofmann1796
      @antonhofmann1796 5 років тому +2

      It doesn't matter if you call it a snorkel or a raised air intake, Nissan for instance markets their snorkels as a "snorkel", but with adding "Essential for Dry and Dusty conditions" and a wading depth of 70cm, the same depth for the GU Patrol with and without snorkel. The LC7x wading depth is 70cm, even with a fully sealed snorkel it's 70cm because it's also limited by the axle and gearbox ventilation and exposure of electric parts and i would not recommend to go over the limits set by toyota without alteration of such parts. Just throwing a safari snorkel on it and calling it a day is not how it's done. Even on the safari snorkel website you will not find a single word about water crossings and higher wading dephts.

    Great review, fantastic and reliable 4wd. Just wish there were more tyre options for the 225/95 R16 size. And a 6 speed transmission would be nice.

    Should come with a rear reverse camera and that rattling rear door on such a new vehicle is such a let down. Needs plenty of sound deadening an an auto transmission. If the Toyota Megacruiser can have a factory auto transmission, Toyota can surely do the same for the Troop Carrier.

      @@gxxxbxxx2858 Aerodynamics play a huge role too the top part of the car is very high and the car isnt wide enough but these factors contribute to the cars instability driving very fast while thers a lot of air blowing towards you and you wanna be wreckles while overtaking in very tight space would lead to a dangerous accident

    I was looking at 2019 Toyota 4Runners here in the US and they seemed way too old fashioned when compared to other modern vehicles. It’s as if they were built 10 years ago and shipped over here as 2019 models or built recently with 10 year old parts. Seeing this makes me wonder if I’m right. Kinda like those cheap Android tablets for sale on Amazon. You wonder how they can make a profit selling tablets for under $30 but when they are opened up, they have manufactured dates indicating that they were assembled over 8 years ago.
