  • If you're a math nerd, you might be constantly confused by the use of the word tangent among artists. In this video, I explain the word as it relates to art, and also give examples of how to improve your art by avoiding tangent disasters.

    This was something I'd noticed on my own before but I never was able to pick out why it was making my compositions look worse. I just knew "this'll look better if I put that further over." It's so nice to have a technical explanation for it thank you!

      It's something I noticed on my own while drawing that makes the real world uglier to me. Look around you and I bet you can easily find 5 or 6 "stolen tangents" from where you're sitting, all making things look misshapen if you close one eye to flatten your depth perception. Eclipses are cool though.

    Just wanted to provide some opinions on the other side of graphic design; Tangents, especially Kissing, Stolen and Parallel are very popular and common in Typography layouts or in Graphic design styles. Example: “The Global Style,” where typography lines up neatly with each other, creating parallel tangents and even stolen tangents.
    Tangents are not inherently bad, it’s just that sometimes they create unwanted “tension.” Imagine two circles kissing each other: the tension would be in the part where they kiss. But that’s not a bad thing-the tension can become a conscious choice. ^^ The choice can be that you wanted the attention to be the kiss between the two circles. It’s all about design hierarchy!

    this sheds some light at some of my art instincts, good video. Never realised that the rule is so relatively simple.
    Though, I was expecting to also hear about cases when tangents actually complement the art. I can see it in Picasso's art, ancient egypt style, some modern cartoon's design, etc.

    Now I can see why some people say that analytical - organized people tends to be unartistic and artistic people tends to be more messy, their definition of tangent is different in their mind. Organised people see tangents are good, it lines up perfectly, makes more compact thing, artistic people see tangent bad, it makes your art look flat. Just my random 2 cent.

    Wow! I have always been extremely bothered and meticulous about lines and shapes aligning too much, but I have never known it was an actual thing with a name... The more ya know! Like not even just art. My OCD intensifies the amount that I notice it in everyday things, like aligning a rug on a floor, the placement of the mouse pointer on a computer screen, etc. And at the end when you were purposely creating tangents, my brain was physically cringing haha

  • @DaveConrey
    @DaveConrey 3 роки тому +3

    Although tangents tend to make drawing and paintings flat, in graphic design, a grid based system relies on certain tangents for optimizing visual interest and flow of content across the page. When you were placing the VSB on the illustration, their placement became the essential element on the page, making the illustration take a secondary position in the hierarchy. The way you were moving the letters around the illustration, you were making bad design decisions based on what you saw as the importance of the illustration, but it should have been the other way around.

    One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The thumbnail may not be appealing to an illustrator, but it does contain graphic design elements that resonate with “good tangent” ideas. Think David Carson styled design, and it’s not that far off.

  • @waazup2

    This seems to contradict with the graphic design principle of alignment, does it not? When used properly, tangents used for alignment can convey clarity and order.

    • @sinixdesign
      @sinixdesign  7 років тому +102

      I wouldn't say contradict. Tangents and alignment are uniting forces. Uniting things can be very important, but this video is all about avoiding the accidental uniting of separate objects.

    • @WadWizard
      @WadWizard 7 років тому +1

      I think its mostly just freehand, but some of the lines appear to be done by holding shift, im not sure if painter has line smoothing.
      Oh, it might be because of how painter handles brushe strokes, its more of a simulation of traditional mediums, so if you have ever used photoshop and had say a square brush that follows your direction, it gets those jaged edges cause its just stamping the same shape down rapidly, but in painter im not sure exactly what it does, but to put it simply it fills in the gaps. What i imagine is going on is that its somewhat similar to how vector programs work, where its aplying your brush to the path you move along. In that case i dont think its a setting, most brushes work that way unless you import a stamp or so ething like that.

    • @heavytransit
      @heavytransit 7 років тому +6

      When doing graphics contrast is more important than the way shapes are placed because graphics are usually flat and it can be a technique or an effect that you purposefully use for composition. When painting or drawing its different because you are trying to imply depth in the image so having tangents is undesirable. The only thing that could be detrimental is that your image may imply a meaning that maybe you are not aware of.

    • @sert87
