I remember Gen Kalra from 1956 when he was TSS with my Dad at Jammu(121 wksp). I too joined NDA IN 1963 and met Gen Kalra as GSO2( OPS) 3 DIV. I was also posted there only. A most respectful and a very dedicated soldier. Our highest regards to him.
Dear Col Gill, I vividly remember my tenure in 121 Wksp under your respected father, then Maj Kartar Singh Gill. I owe such a great deal to him for the way he brought me up during my formative years. He set very high standards in all fields of work and I have often quoted him as a wonderful OC, who has left an indelible mark in my mind. Great to hear from you and will be happy to be in contact to relive those days all over again. God bless you.

In what ways have the alummi of NDA changed over the years?
It appears that a significant section within the current generation has very high ambition but lacks self awareness, intellectual humility, empathy & moral courage. Consequently, the gap between the stated ethos and the prevailing values is huge.
Having interacted with an old timer from 9th Course JSW who retired in 94 as a Lt Gen, I am inclined to believe that their generation of officers was more officer like than those that came later.
Armed forces are a microcosm of the parent society. As societal values change, the value system within it's military changes as well. To assert that the Armed Services can maintain a value system that is at a variance from that of the parent society is illogical.
There will always be different thoughts and there cannot be a set pattern too. Just do our job to the best of the capability and Service Before Self has been a great motto to follow and live with. I
